My computer started running extremely slow. When I check the task manager it notes that the CPU usage is spiked at 100%. I checked to see what is using most of the CPU and its "explorer.exe" using about 99%.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI noticed my laptop lagging a lot. I checked the CPU usage, and it was constantly at 100%. After retstart and shutdown, the cpu usage would never go lower than 100%. I did a system restore to a week ago when I did not have this problem, but this did not help. Did a spyware scan with Spybot and Ad Aware, again no help. Did a virus scan with TrendMicro, no help again.

It seems the green line on bottom takes for ever to go across. I know I only have dial up service (I know my son says i need cable but i don't want to spend any more money on Internet) but it has never run this slow before.

Ran Hijackthis, spybot, and updated and ran antivirus - with no problems found. started in safe mode and CPU usage was at 1%. Working through msconfig i started turning services off untill i found culprit. The plug and play service is causing my problem with the CPU, but I don't know how to fix it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy IE7's been running really slow starting this past week. I don't know what the cause is exactly. I can't figure out if it's the IE software on the PC or if it has something to do with the internet connection. I've run the following to diagnose my problem: NAV 2007 - No Viruses Webroos SpySweeper - No Spyware Optonline speedcheck Utility (when I can get it to run) - the results are very good 13-15mbps down and ~1.5mbps up. I would've posted this last night, but I couldn't get the page to load and even the optonline homepage sometimes wouldn't load. Also, I've noticed that images aren't loading onto the web pages. Just getting a box with an "x" in it. Don't remember if that is an IE security setting that i just need to allow or a an invasion to my system. I reset the IE7 settings to clear anything within IE, but that just made me lose my settings and IE still ran slow and inconsistently. I've checkd the ADD/Remove list and the list of folders within the program files folder and I've found nothing bad has been installed on the sly. Not really sure if this is a problem with optonline's signal or if I've gotten something on my PC that just isn't getting found by NAV and spysweeper. I'm trying to hold off on restoring my system image file, but if I must. I'd like totry to diagnose this if I can.

If I use Windows Explorer to go deeper than the first level of any tree, CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there. I've disabled System Restore because it wouldn't let me go back in time anyway and this program is a known resource gobbler. Didn't help. I've attached a hijackthis logfile to see if anyone recognizes a Trojan, etc. I would appreciate any help at all.
I'm running XP on a computer with 1.3 gig CPU, 768MB RAM and 60 gig HD. My CPU usage is typically about 25-40%, but if I want to link to a video clip online and run it, CPU usage goes to 100% and the video won't run.I had a bad browser hijacker in May which took 10 days to fix with Tech guy help and me learning along the way, and a small problem in August, again fixed through advice from TechGuy, which I really appreciated.However, I have another teen living with us now, who says that my CPU usage should only be about 5%.Could someone help me decide what I layers of protection I can do without or how to configure all the anti-everything software I have that was recommended in May? If you open up any program, the CPU usage immeaditely goes from like 0 to 100% and occassionally it will shut down and restart. Such times are when I try to run ad-aware or AVG. It will shoot up to 100%, maybe run for a minute then restart the computer. I cant even delete some files because it just restarts before they delete. So, I tried to do a restore since the last time ive been home when it was working good, about a month ago and it did nothing.

But since contracting it even up to today, my machine seems to be running sluggish. Even running a non-online game runs the CPU usage to 100%. Have I too many things running in the background, and how can I get rid of unnecessary stuff? I fear some things are running that I did not intentionally put on there.

MSMSG.EXE which i assume is microsoft messages of some form but no message is actally on screen the other is VSMON.exe which is part of the Zone lab firewall, they only activate sporadically and when I am on the Net but they show cpu usage at 80%+ so everything freezes. When they are not active the cpu runs at around 15%.
