i tried to install media player but it said i needed the update rollup 2 so i tried to install that but it failed and no updates are working they all fail. Someone told me to uninstall some updates and reinstall them but i cant find them. any ideas?

Well, I got the latest version of the Real player and clipped its wings so it wouldn't take over every audio and video file i have. Then downloaded the latest QuickTime player (after uninstalling the old one.) Every time an attempt is made to install the QuickTime player after 11 or so seconds into the process it stops and gives me this little message: "1607: Unable to install Installshield Scripting Runtime."

I have a voicemail service that I access either by phone or online. I've been having trouble playing messages online and saving messages to my hard disk. Left-clicking on a message should open a WMP 10 window and play the message. The problem is that it works sporadically. One minute I can play a message fine, then I'll try playing another one and it might play fine, but it might not. If not, the bottom of the window says ''connecting...'' and nothing happens.
If I right-click on a message to get a menu that includes, ''save target as'' and choose this option, I get a ''file download'' window that says ''getting file information''. Then either a ''save as'' (?) window is displayed or the ''file download'' window gets stuck saying ''getting file information.''
When I insert a music CD, a window comes- up asking if I want real player or take no action.What I want is auto-play with windows media player and cannot figure this out.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would really appreciate some advice concerning a troublesome computer.A friend who was running Windows XP on a two-years old computer began to experience occasional freezes and blue screens without any apparent pattern in program or usage. It eventually got so bad that we removed most of his installed software other than the essential, but problems continued. We then made a repair installation of Windows XP from the Dell OS installation disk, after which the computer would fall over every time after initial boot up. With sinking heart (of course, he had no image, but had data backups) we then formatted the hard disk and executed a fresh installation of Windows XP.
Windows now boots but the Windows directories contain very few folders or files. The CD drive can only be read perhaps 50% of the time. Most program installation files refuse to run, but some do. One installation disk which will not run is his internet installation. The computer continues to display sporadic blue screens.Before it goes out the window can anyone suggest our next course of enquiry?
Having recently had someone else using my computer for a while, installing various software (like winamp and SubEdit player) it seems windows media player (that's what I use) no longer recognises the usual files as media files like .mp3 .wmv .m3u .avi etc etc so when I click open file and select "media files (all types)" in the file type box it shows nothing, so I have to change it to all files which is irritating. Media player still plays everything fine but this is pretty annoying.

I have WMP,iTunes,GoldWave,Realplayer and quick Time in my Entertainment folder.Task manager does not indicate as to which application or process is being used for audio.I would like to know which program/application is in use at the time the CD is playing. Besides I do not want to disable the autoplay of the CD.
