I was helped by Flrman1 last weekend in getting rid of a trojan, and it worked great. Scans come up clean now. But since contracting it even up to today, my machine seems to be running sluggish. Even running a non-online game runs the CPU usage to 100%. Have I too many things running in the background, and how can I get rid of unnecessary stuff? I fear some things are running that I did not intentionally put on there.

Using a Toshiba Satellite 1800 Laptop 1GHz Intel P3 - BIOS Ver 1.90 04/18/2002.
The past week or two it seems that the computer locks up, the Task Manager shows the CPU running at 100%. It allows some activity all be it slow & shutting down all programs (which are not locked up) does not stop the activity - including disconnecting the internet. Have run Norton scan, Spybot S&D and Adaware with nothing of significance found. Ran HiJackThis and found some startup stuff and stopped them from running but I don't know enough about the programs that are running to remove them.
Last time I booted I had to force a shutdown after waiting for 15 minutes. Next reboot took 22 minutes for the CPU to back off of 100%. I started Task Mgr very early into the boot, just before the icons started to appear and it showed 33 processes running. I watched as 14 more started up all while the CPU was steady at 100% usage. Then at 5 minutes after booting the processor dropped to 50% bounced around for a minute then went back to 100%. There was some activity through the modem (cable) but not very much. I unplugged the modem power. I shut down Skype, MSN Messenger and MS Defender and about a minute later the CPU dropped to 27%. Nothing of what I shut down appeared to alter anything.

I'm running XP on a computer with 1.3 gig CPU, 768MB RAM and 60 gig HD. My CPU usage is typically about 25-40%, but if I want to link to a video clip online and run it, CPU usage goes to 100% and the video won't run.I had a bad browser hijacker in May which took 10 days to fix with Tech guy help and me learning along the way, and a small problem in August, again fixed through advice from TechGuy, which I really appreciated.However, I have another teen living with us now, who says that my CPU usage should only be about 5%.Could someone help me decide what I layers of protection I can do without or how to configure all the anti-everything software I have that was recommended in May? I did a system restore to a week ago when I did not have this problem, but this did not help. Did a spyware scan with Spybot and Ad Aware, again no help. Did a virus scan with TrendMicro, no help again.

If you open up any program, the CPU usage immeaditely goes from like 0 to 100% and occassionally it will shut down and restart. Such times are when I try to run ad-aware or AVG. It will shoot up to 100%, maybe run for a minute then restart the computer. I cant even delete some files because it just restarts before they delete. View 12 Replies View RelatedTwo files occasionally start running which tie up large amounts of CPU capacity. Checking thro Task Manager these appear to be
MSMSG.EXE which i assume is microsoft messages of some form but no message is actally on screen the other is VSMON.exe which is part of the Zone lab firewall, they only activate sporadically and when I am on the Net but they show cpu usage at 80%+ so everything freezes. When they are not active the cpu runs at around 15%.
our computer is running slowly. When trying to open programs the hour glass flashes and so do the icons. I ctrl alt del to check my usage and it keeps going up to the high 90's and then back down. I have updated and ran Adaware , spybot and AVG.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI would really appreciate some advice concerning a troublesome computer.A friend who was running Windows XP on a two-years old computer began to experience occasional freezes and blue screens without any apparent pattern in program or usage. It eventually got so bad that we removed most of his installed software other than the essential, but problems continued. We then made a repair installation of Windows XP from the Dell OS installation disk, after which the computer would fall over every time after initial boot up. With sinking heart (of course, he had no image, but had data backups) we then formatted the hard disk and executed a fresh installation of Windows XP.
Windows now boots but the Windows directories contain very few folders or files. The CD drive can only be read perhaps 50% of the time. Most program installation files refuse to run, but some do. One installation disk which will not run is his internet installation. The computer continues to display sporadic blue screens.Before it goes out the window can anyone suggest our next course of enquiry?
