Msmsgs Is Eating Up 98% Of My CPU Cycles - Spyware
Apr 15, 2006
As of late, upon realizing that my system is unbearably slow, I've noticed via the task manager that msmsgs is sometimes eating up 98-99% of my CPU cycles. One time it was Norton AntiVirus, but every other time msmsgs. What I've done:I've run Ad-aware SE full scan and found only tracking cookies (deleted them).I've run Spybot S&D and only found tracking cookies (deleted them).I've run Windows Defender on full scan, pretty much the same.I've run NAV full system scan and found no viruses.

Recently, have been getting upwrsd of 10+ sessions of msmsgs.exe running in the background. So many that i get a message saying my virtual memory is running low. I can can them through task manager but all that happens is that they re start, one at a time and gradually build up again. I've run ad-aware,spybot & Norton antivirus but continues to happen. NAV states no viruses. adaware & spybot result in the usual but say that they've deleted
them.

I have a toshiba laptop. It was working fine. I think my daughter shut it down wrong. Now it opens to the menu to select Normal, Safe Mode, etc. No matter what I pick it begins to start, gets past the Windows logo screen and then a blue screen flashes up and it restarts before you can ever read the letters on the blue screen. It just keeps cycling. Will not start. I am on XP sp2. Can't tell much else since I cannot even figure out how to get it started. I have removed the battery for 5 minutes and pulled the power cord.

On an MSI P7N SLI Platinum motherboard, dual booting Windows XP and Vista - I mainly use XP - here also, this happened on XP. Ever since I updated Java Runtime Environment to 6 Update 10, jqsnotify - the Java Quickstart process, automatically starts up after some interval and consumes 25% of my CPu's cycles, - thats one core basically. Soon, there are 4 instances of this process - using up all my CPU power. I can close them down from the task manager - but when I'm playing a game- it suddenly slows down and I know what's happening but its frankly very irritating.

When I try to log on the dialog box cycles through "retrieving user settings"... "logging off"... "saving user settings"... and then returns me to a log in screen. The log in screen is more like an NT screen with fields for user ID and password rather than the XP screen with a button for my users. I have tried my ID, "XP" and "Administrator" with similar results. I installed xp service pack 2 about a week ago. Just before this occured the computer reported "lost or damaged clusters on startup and I allowed it to go through the repair process. The only file listed as damaged had nothing to do with start up [thumbs.db in my pictures]

I have recently had a major system failure, specifically my Windows XP will no longer fully boot. When I power on my computer, it gets to the "windows had
a problem starting up" page, where it gives options for starting in safe mode, normal mode, etc. However, no matter which option I choose, the computer cycles through startup and comes back to this same page. I have tried hitting F8 and getting to the advanced options, but I get the same result. Nothing I try works. I suspect there are corrupted sectors in the core system somewhere.

My computer will not start up. It boots and and gets to a screen where it asks if I want to start windows normally. I do that and then the window xp logo appears and then it reboots and starts all over again. Right after the window xp logo appears something runs across the screen and disappears to fast to see what it is.I have norton internet and antivirus and the sp2 pack of windows xp installed. However, I have not installed anything recently. Just prior to the problem my comcast high speed internet went down and when it came on that is when I had the problem. I can boot from the CD-rom and have done a check with a cdrom norton and I have no viruses, but it is not the latest viruses on the disk and I dont know how to down load them onto the cdrom from norton site.

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook (about 18 months to two years old) running XP Pro, and frequently I encounter a situation where, with no programs running, explorer.exe "cycles" in activity and CPU usage - for example, from 30,000 K Memory Usage to 50,000 K to 70,000 K to 90,000 K (over the course of 10 seconds or so), then drops back down to 30 or 40,000K and starts over.

There are two excellent spyware removal apps available and they are both FREE so there is no reason to not use them regularly. The two best apps there are for removing spyware are SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU USE BOTH OF THESE APPS SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES AND VICE VERSA, YOU ARE NOT SAFE USING JUST ONE OF THEM. There is one other app that I HIGHLY recommend is for spyware prevention, SpywareBlaster. This app sets certain registry entries that prevent spyware from ever installing, it DOES NOT run in the background using any resources, you just set it and forget it. Once you have installed these three MUST HAVE apps you then need to update them and keep them up to date. I would recommend checking for updates weekly, it’s just like your antivirus app, you need to stay protected from the latest spyware out there. To update SpyBot just open the app from your start menu (use the advanced mode option) and select “search for updates” it will then show you what updates are available for download, always install all the updates. Another feature that SpyBot has is called “Immunize”, you will see an icon for it. Select the icon and under “Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity” select “Immunize” this works in the same way as SpywareBlaster in blocking new spyware. It also gives you the option of locking your hosts file against hijackers, I highly recommend using this option as well. To update Ad Aware just open it and select “Check for updates now”. For SpywareBlaster it is mostly the same, open it up and select “Check for updates” once you update this you then must select “select all” and then “Protect against checked items” so that the updates you just did take effect. Anything these apps find is spyware and should be removed, if you choose not to remove what is found then you have no one to blame if your pc crashes due to spyware or your privacy is invaded (including these companies stealing your credit card number and identity

I rarely experience this but for some reason when I'm just trying to look through my own PC folders, the CPU usage is suddenly at 100%. The task manager says that the windows explorer is taking up almost all of the CPU usage.

One of them "svchost.exe (SYSTEM)" is eating up anywhere from 8,000-18,000K of memory, which is a lot more than it did previously and the other"svchost.exe (NETWORK SERVICE)" can eat up to 99% of my CPU at times while running in the same range of memory usage as the aforementioned process.

I have a strange(or not) problem. Whenever i copy something to my hard drive, either a dvd or some large files from a cd, the computer becomes extremly slow beacause all the ram is used by something. The amount of available physical memory drops to 3 or 4 MB in about 30 sec (while the file is being copied) ,then rises when the copying is finished.

I have a pretty old and crappy computer with a 40gb HDD. Just a week ago I had like 13-14 GB free on it. Then I got a virus. I successfully cleared out all traces of the virus that I could find using ad-aware and trend micro house call. When I was scanning with adaware, it shows the filenames and paths being scanned. There were all of these files(and I mean thousands) with porn names, and I had never put them there. Adaware didn't catch them as any sort of bad file either. The weird thing is, when I went to the directory that it said they were located in, nothing was there. I even made hidden files visible and still nothing.

I am running XP on a dell D610 laptop (new) When I access the internet by send/recieve in outlook or through explorer. Its taking up to five minutes to access pages or email. I am already connected !! I noticed that as soon as I execute send/recieve the CPU shoots up to 100% and stays there. When the CPU drops it connects. After the initial tedium things work OK until I log off or restart the laptop. I am currently in a remote location and have to use dial up. However the office PC seems to connect without these symptons.

What would cause msiexec.exe to use all of the cpu on a computer? There are multiple copies of it running in the task manager. I checked google and found that it's supposed to be a necessary program. Why would is cause a computer to run so slow?

I usually leave my computer on for a day as it has music and files that other users around the house may need. If I start up the computer for the first time in a day and come back a coule hours later the system takes a very long time to get out of the screen saver and continues to act very slowyl. When I press Ctrl+ALT+Del I see that a program called 'mixer.exe' is using 111,000+k of my memory usage. So basically my question is: what is mixer.exe? I think it is some type of sound program but I never use it.

Ive read a million topics on this but almost all of them deal with OBVIOUS solutions to the problem. Well I've already updated my OS (newest security patches, service packs, etc...), Antivirus, adware removal...etc... and for about 30mins after a restart, the lsass.exe system process eats all my cpu power. Once its done my system runs like a charm, but those 30min restarts are a waste of time. It is really starting to annoy me. No this is not a virus (according to AVG, McAfee, etc...) problem, or an Adware (spybot, adaware) problem. It is the legitimate system process eating my resources.

I've glanced thru previous threads and am unable to find much luck with this We have a Sony Viao laptop running Windows XP Professional, service pack 2. The system appears to boot normally; until Windows is finished loading. That's when we notice the CPU fan begin to rev and very poor system performance.Opening the Task Manager, we quickly see that the CPU is running at 100%, and the processes tab is showing "svchost" to be the culprit.Knowing this, we've run the standard adware/anti-viral scans that only found tracking cookies and SpamBuster, which have been nuked from the system; yet the situation continues.

I have posted this problem before but none of the answers seemed to work. Windows XP Pro SP2 When I boot my computer up I have about 22 GB of space. After about 2 days it's all gone and I have to re-Boot the computer. I have looked at recent files etc but nothing is over a GB. I have also de-installed Bootvis as I thought that might be the problem.

To all those with the ability to step up to the plate and knock this one out of the park (steroids permitted):Shortly after starting windows xp home edition, a process named "svchost.exe" starts and ties up 50% of my cpu usage. The process will not end on its own so I open the task manager and end the process. I've been running Norton Anti-Virus 2004, Ad-aware SE Personal, and Spybot Search & Destroy. I update these programs daily, yet they show no unwanted guests on my computer. How do I get rid of this booger.

How do I find out what programs are running other than using Task Manager which shows no programs running?
