I would like to begin using an SSD in my older Tower. I use Windows 7-Pro-64 with 4GB's of Ram. I would like to know if I were to install 7 on an SSD and assign the Systems Drive Letter to A:, if I would have any trouble with 7? Additionally, would Applications like Office, BoostSpeed, Picasa, etc. install on C: as they did before or would they install on A?
View 6 RepliesI have bought a new hard drive to use as my main one, and am planning to use my current, larger one as backup, as i found i was not filling it. So i need to completely duplicate my current drive, a 1tb one, with 180gb of stuff, to my new 320gb drive. i have made a full disc image with driveimage xml, which comes to 180gb, but when i try to restore it to the 320gb one, it says it it too big. How do i gp about setting this up? do i need to copy the system reserved partition to the new drive too for windows 7 to work, or can it not be copied? should i install windows 7 to the new drive from my install disc? if so, how to i get my settings, programs and data back without too mcuh hassle?

Lately whenever i try to start my computer it pass the Dell Bios and then directly goes to the screen which states
Repair your system or Start windows normally When i chose repair system , it start downloading windows files and then launch the windows , but hung up at the sky blue login window with only movable cusor . When i choose to start windows normally it gives me BSOD momentarly ( hard to see the message) and then restarts again . i tried with the advanced boot up options like
repair my computer , all safe modes , restore to last good configuration but it does the same and hangs at windows loging sky blue window .I Tried to run the Dell PSA+ Diagnostic and it returns with 2000-0146 error . As per the Dell online solutions for this type of error ,I tried to reinstall the Hard disk but the problem still exist.
I recently reorganized my computer and this included a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new disk. I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files.Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed."
Same result in Safe mode. Same result with AV disabled. (Kaspersky Internet Security 12)

At first I was gonna try to dual-boot, but the fly in the ointment was all I had was an image on my external HD, which has about 100G of other stuff on it. My disc drive would not for the life of me burn an ISO image on any of my three DVD types. And the process of trying to find how to fix the drive problem and/or create just a bootable PARTITION on a HD without effecting everything else just drove me insane...which is kind of where I am now. After a week now I just have to get back to my project. lol And if that means no fancy windows 7 internet experience..while attempting a dual-boot scenerio workaround, I shrunk partition C and created a new 5G partition at the end of it. In EaseUS, I assigned it letter B and I set it to active, figuring it was to be bootable (wrong, I know). Additionally near the same time in Folder Properties, I unhid system files, folders...etc.
NOW the System drive showed as F! Then, attempting to use EasyBCD, it told me it could not find the BCD files to begin. So, naturally it had to do with that.I thought maybe it should have been B, but why would Ease US give me that letter option?After showing Easy BCD the file it seems to be OK....there. Also in Startup & Recovery it is listed in System Startup as the default system. But is it OK?Also, should it also be active. Did I inadvertently switch it by making the new partition active? What should I do to get it to boot properly. I AM planning on booting XP from a flash drive anyway, but still.
I have recently installed windows ultimate x64 on my computer.i have an asus p6t deluxe v2 mobo, i7-960 cpu and a wd velociraptor hdd. The install went ok, I even managed to restart my computer a few times after but after windows updates installed it won't boot. I tried to boot into safe mode, restore from the installer, and repair, none worked. After startup repair it says: "a patch is preventing the system from starting" and I get a 0x1f error code.(Preventing windows from downloading any updates didn't work either)

System restore disc did not work. At this point I thought the hard drive was fried. Finally I stuck the the Windows 7 companion disk and got the system to boot I can tell all my files are there somewhere due to amount of memory taking up on the hard drive. Anyways my main problem it is now asking for the product key although I have 29 days which unfortunately I cannot find. Laptop in question is a Lenovo G550. Where do I go from here? Do I have to purchase a new key? I've been using the laptop since and it seems to be working properly as far as i can tell.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Preinstalled. On the back of the laptop is a coa product key. Recently the hard drive failed. I was told that I could easily get a new drive which I have done and I have run the system test and the new drive passes. However although I have a HP system recovery cd, i do not have any installation cd's for windows as HP don't give you any.
I've tried using the recovery cd but as the new hard drive has never had windows 7 on it, it refuses to work.
What do i do now? Why don't HP give away the software with their computers. It seems fairly logical that maybe one day in the future you might need to install a new hard drive. I'm not exactly enthused about paying for the software when I clearly have a legal key on the back of the laptop.
I am planning on building myself a new computer and I am using the same hard drive as I am currently and I wanted to reinstall win 7 and clear my hard drive to have a new start as my hard drive is currently full of junk .So I was wondering if I reinstall win 7 on the same hard drive will the copy still work or will I have to buy a new license/serial key.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm looking into a relative's PC running Windows 7 Home Premium and it's giving me quite a lot of errors.I can't say exactly what the problem is, but several messages/errors led me to believe that a system repair of corrupt/missing files was in order:- Example 1: Control Panel >> Programs >> Turn Windows features on or off: The system could not find the environment option that was entered. Same error comes up when I try to run CMD as Administrator. - Example 2: Opening pictures with Windows' default picture viewer produced an error. This led me to believe that maybe just the picture viewer was corrupt, but then I saw WMP wouldn't run either, and different system options wouldn't work (as in Ex. 1).
I looked around and found that the appropriate files actually did exists, but still wouldn't run for some reason (e.g. WMP, Picture Viewer, etc.)So I decided to run "sfc /scannow" which, at first, just popped up and then immediately closed. Then I tried running it from the Windows 7 installation DVD, via Safe Mode, and via other accounts. In most cases, it said it was starting and that "This will take some time", and a few seconds later "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".I also tried "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c: /offwindir=c:windows" and the same via the installation DVD, in which case I used "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d: /offwindir=d:windows" instead.I Googled a lot and nothing seems to work. I'd really like to restore this system back into working condition without losing any personal data. Yes, I've already backed it up.
I can't get system restore to work all the way.I keep getting error messages. The first error message said this:"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. Then I tried to do system restore again, this time from safe mode - but restore still didn't work. I keep getting the same error message. A few days later I was getting ready to create a regular Restore Point, like I do every few weeks. But that's when I noticed that "System Restore" now shows two drives "C:" and "K:", and "K:" was greyed-out. So, I clicked the "Configure" button to configure the "K:" drive.
So, I wasn't sure that if the act of configuring the "K:" drive might have caused this whole - not being able to Restore issue. For example, by adding a new hard drive and then "Configuring" the drive, so that System Restore can work/talk with the new drive - did that somehow give System Restore a split-personality disorder? View 1 Replies View Relatedall the icons on my screen have gone white and i cant click anything not even the start button. when i bring up the task manager all it is is a white box. i can login in fine but that is it. when i try torestore nothing happens, i dont have any restore points so i dont want to do a complete restore if i can avoid it. i have tried running chkdsk in safe mode but nothing has worked. i have also run avg rescue cd form a usb and it identified a trojan but i deleted it, still no effect. i have also tried using the recovery cd i got with my samsung laptop but can only use the startup check tool. this comes back with no issues but i cant use any of the other options.

After having it examined by a computer engineer the only thing he could do was to re install a trial version of Windows 7 in the hope that when I activate it (in the next 30 days) the motherboard will accept the new product key.
I am at a loss as to why my system crashed initially but after several technicians have looked at the system this is the best they could do. If its going to be an issue I wont activate and will start using a Linux OS if I have to.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am helping a friend with her Windows 7 laptop which crashed this evening. Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot fix the problem. System Restore fails as well despite trying numerous restore points.The log show that a root cause was found:
Boot critical file
C:CI.dll is corrupt
She has important personal data on this system so a fresh OS install is not an option yet.THis will be a good learning experience for me as I am looking into starting my own computer repair business. I'm not quite sure how to proceed with this. What should I do from here? Do I need to remove her HD and use a data recovery app on a separate system to recover her files, then reinstall Windows 7?
my laptop starts up as the "windows did not shut down properly" screen where I can start windows normal to do repair. When I start windows normally it sends me to the repair screen. And when I select system repair it just freezes at a light blue and geen screen and the only thing showing is my cursor. Ive tried to run the system in safe mode but it freezes at classpnp.sys, and eventually sends me back to the repair screen that is frozen. I don't believe I have my windows 7 installation disk for my laptop so that is out of the equation.
My brother was using my computer and said it was updating when this happened so Im not sure what caused all this.
I installed Windows 7 RC 64bit on my Ausus Striker II Formula Motherboard (Nforce 780sli) and everything was working sweet.
I attempted to do a System Transfer from my old Windows Vista 64bit (where you transfer your documents etc.), this appeared to go well however now my network connection will not work. DHCP or Static IP settings dont work. I am unable to change the 'unidentified' network's location from public.
Any ideas from anyone?
I am close to reinstalling.
