I have a WIN -7 system with 1 trig SADA hard drive. I also have a Vista system with a 750mb hard drive from my old computer.Can I install the Vista hard drive into the Win-7 system and boot from either system?
View 1 RepliesSo I've been collecting extra parts on the side for a while, and finally got around to throwing them all in a rig yesterday.[code] Now it boots fine and happy. I went to install windows from a dvd, the installer saw both hard drives but told me that "windows cannot be installed to this disk. this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk" for both. Something about both of them saying that told me it wasn't something wrong with the hdds, especially because the 120gb one was fresh out of a antistatic bag that was sealed from the factory :. I went into bios to figure out why, and after looking around I found a utility called "Super Recovery". It basically allows you to manually put in a reserved system partition on the hard drive that windows usually automatically puts on your hard drive of like 100mb. I did that to the 120, and boom, windows allowed me to install onto it. Windows finished installed completely, and went to restart. My boot priority has always been Hard Drive -> then CD-ROM. The system trys to boot from the hard drive, then gets nothing and boots from the cd again. If I take the cd out, it sits there for a bit, then tells you that you need to insert a system disk. The 120gb hdd is pinned to master mode, and the 80gb is pinned for slave. They are plugged into their respective master and slave plugs on the IDE cable.

Something happened and now the system just boots to Winodows 7 without giving me the choice to boot to either. When I use F6 I find that only Windows 7 is listed in the Operating Systems box.

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy desktop computer won't boot. When I turn it on it displays the welcome splash screen and then goes black. A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI already have windows 7 Ulitmate x86 but 1 day I came up with an idea of giving a try on x64 one by dual booting.. So I downloaded it legally from microsoft and I did every procedures required for the install. Shrunk my C drive and installed the OS on the unallocated free space on the drive and it went on perfectly. But the problem is the System Reserved partition showed up on the x86 OS. every time i open My Computer i can see the system reserved partition.
I could accidentally do something wrong with the partition if it remains unhidden so I want to hide it. I was thinking of changing the drive letter but I afraid that's going to give me boot problem. In disk management the System Reserved is labelled Z and marked as active. I tried to set my other partition as active that day but the pc cannot boot at all not even the boot manager showed up. However I managed to fix it using my recovery disc to access the cmd and reactivate the Z drive using diskpart.

I've been trying to figure out how to do it by following along to another thread in here but as BarefootKid mentioned, it is probably best that I start my own threadAfter I install Windows 7 and it completes and reboots it takes me to system recovery but it is the system recovery for Windows vista. I've been trying different things like formatting the partition right before the install and making the partition that Windows 7 is going to go on "active" in the .cmd prompt. I keep going in circlesinstalling Windows 7, getting system recovery and eventually choosing to reformat from Gateway's manufacturer settings...although once I do this I can't actually get back into Windows Vista as that now seems to be messed up. (I don't have the original Vista installation cd). Then I try rebooting and installing from the Windows 7 cd again to try more techniques to get it to work...I'm at the point of possibly deleting the recovery partition because the Vista remnants seem to be on this partition and taking over once I install Windows 7.

This system is so sluggish it either has multiple infections or is just overloaded given its puny 512 MB of RAM, so I can't really use the system specs utility at the moment.Since I'm working on a similar clean install for an ACER notebook which is Win7HP 32-bit, what are the chances that the .iso file I'm burning to DVD can also be used for this much older technology. I have no problem upgrading the RAM to its max, unless it's already at its max?
I am dual booting Vista and Windows7 RC 7100. They are both on the same Hard Drive on different partitions. I have made the decision to stick with the new OS (Windows7) and give Vista the boot. So I want to get rid of the extra partition and revert to a single OS (Windows7).
I don't want to reformat the whole hard drive and completely re-install the windows7 operating system. I want to remove Vista from the dual boot menu and keep windows7. Then I want to format the Vista Partition. How can I do this and keep my present installation of Windows7 without having to reinstall Windows7?
So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

The Win 7 boot loader gives me the choice of Windows 7, Vista and XP when I boot up. The question is: If I install Ubuntu onto the second HD in a currently unoccupied partion, will GRUB (which is sure to take over the booting process, from past experience) still leave me with the 3 choices I have now (assuming I do not select the Ubuntu prompt). I wwould hate to lose the ability to get into the 3 Win systems !

The old hard drive has an expensive program on it that I need for work, and the program either won't work at all or wont work without an upgrade according to the supplier when I asked why I can't run the program using Windows 7. i have laptop reinstalled with windows 7, it doesnt work properly, cos ram is 1GB only, i want to reinstall windows xp now, but it does not allow me to do that.

I just turned on my laptop on and it wouldnt go past the "starting windows" logo. So I restarted my computer and it gave me an option to repair start up option and once the repair finished it said it has failed to solve the issue and it pop up a Windows System Recovery which is always good if I wanted to restore it to the factory state unfortunately I have about 30 GB more or less data on this laptop that is basically my life and wanted to retrieve the data.
It also gave me an option for command prompt so i went and run "chkdsk" it got to 49% and from there it kept on listing the entries on the disk and numbers that its got errors on, I didn't quiet finished the disk check and turned my laptop off. Reason being it was 4 AM in the morning. I have been using my laptop for over 2-3 years and by use I mean it has been online almost 80% of the time more or less.
Is it hard drive failure? If so is there a way I could retrieve any data from it? I know there are software that you can boot from CD or USB to salvage what ever data is left or readable, however the data is somewhat precious to me and dont want to do further damage. I would have gone to an professional and gave it to them but I can't afford it. I'm going to change the hard drive into a different laptop to check if its truely an hard drive problem related.
Recently i installed Windows 7 Ultimate and got that activated. Every thing was working fine.
When i connect my 2nd Hard Drive and boot the system then the System says that : "Your Windows 7 is not Activated, only 30 Days left to Activate"
I have a duplicate image of my windows 7 system. I want to move my windows 7 system off from my 2TB drive on to a smaller 500GB drive instead. I used an imaging program to duplicate the drive contents onto the 500GB drive. My question now is, is it safe to switch to my 500GB as my primary drive and boot up from it without affecting my Windows 7 activation status, or do I need to de-activate it first on the 2TB drive then re-activate on the 500GB drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSuddenly my Win 7 Home Premium x64 will not boot. The system starts, POSTs then loads the DVD driver, then the screen goes black (not blank but "lit up" black if that makes sense). Then nothing. If I use Hiren's boot cd I can boot up using the "boot from HDD" option fine and Windows operates normally. System restore to a previous configuration made no difference to the original problem. I cannot boot into Safe Mode. F8 just offers me boot order options.
- Running the Windows 7 DVD I find: "No operating system is listed on the Repair Windows option."
- Running Startup Repair finds the following error: "the partition table does not have a valid system partition" which it claims to have repaired, but the error remains and Windows will still not boot.
I followed this advice:
Boot 7 dvd to system recovery options command prompt. Type: Diskpart
list vol (find the vol letter e.g C or partition number e.g. 1 for the system partition )
Sel vol C ( or sel vol 1, obviously use the correct letter or number)
act exi
My system partition was easily identified and listed as healthy so I selected it and made it active. The problem still remains exactly the same. My system is self built just over a year ago, to my knowledge has been running fine, without any hardware issues. I'm prepared to do a clean install if that's what it takes but if there is a way to fix the partition problem without that I'd like to explore it first.
i have a (spinning) hard-drive with my windows 7system and data on it. it is up to date to this month. the hard-drive is a 320gb. there is jsut 69gb used on the 320gb.i just bought a 256 gb SSD (solid state HD). i would like to place everything on the 256 and put IT in my laptop. i have saved a system image of the 320gb on DVD. windows seems to want an exact size (320gb) to restore the system to.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo, i woke up the other day to see my Windows 7 computer is now completely screwed up that i am on right now..C drive is Mirror RAIDed to let you know.It is reporting 74.1MB free of 465GB total on the drive.No matter what i delete, it does NOT EVER free up space.As a matter of fact, some files delete, then come right back, files i've added myself.. weird #1Two, i run chkdsk in windows, it says C drive is a RAW drive and cant scan however it boots up fine to it every time. weird #2So i then use windows repair command prompt to chkdsk /F /R It sees it's NTFS JUST FINE..but reports ZERO errors.. weird #3I scan using Intel Matrix Storage Console in windows, NO ERRORS, weird #4But i am getting Disk I/O errors like crazy in windows logs and in programs, etc.. weird #5I selected all files on Disk C- total space in use under 300gb, but showing 465GB in use.. weird #6Scanned for infections with AVG, no errors, i tried malwarebytes, will not open- 0xc000005. weird #7So i have a drive that can't be read but is read but reporting wrong size but measures right size that has no errors but has errors.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am stack at certain process while trying to load a system image onto new hard drive using Windows 7 x64 image restore function from the windows 7 disk, I got my primary drive 500 gigs with windows 7 and all my files,I made a system image onto another clean internal hard drive size 160 gigs and I was successful, now I disconnected my 500 gigs primary hard drive, attached a new 250 gig hard drive and I proceeded to load the system image, I boot to windows 7 cd,I get the option to repair , click on restore from system image file , everything looks good computer finds the hard drive 160 gigs with the system image as source,I press next look for the target drive and I see it there 250 gigs drive thats freshly formatted ..., I select the target press next it all looks good and then I get the screen that there is no target hard drive... I made sure that this hard drive is not being excluded from format and new process... I am lost ... what am I doing wrong here, I reformatted those 2 drives twice I tried this operation about 8 times , I get the error message each time I am attempting to create this new system image..

View 9 Replies View RelatedHere's the deal: I've bought a new 1.5TB hard drive for my PC to replace the 320GB one in there at the moment (turning it into a HTPC). Problem is, it's one of those mini-tower PCs and it only has the one hard drive slot. This means it's re-installation time!
So the question is, what do you lot think would be the best way of setting up Windows 7 on this new drive, hopefully keeping as much as possible of my current setup? As far as I can work out, my options are as follows:Use the Windows Backup thing to do a complete PC backup, installing Windows on the new hard drive, then restoring the system from the backup. Use a Linux live CD and use Partimage to create an image of the system partition which I can then put on the new hard drive and hope it boots (obviously once the MBR is sorted, etc). Just install Windows on the new hard drive and set everything up again from scratch. The hard drive arrives in 2 days, so what do you reckon?
