Install Vista On One Hard Drive, Win 7 On Hard Drive 2
I have Vista installed on my Hard Drive, 250 GB.
But i recently purchased a 2nd Hard Drive, 500 GB, and i want to install Windows 7 on it.
Is that possible, to have both separately?

Swapping Data Between Vista Ultimate 64 Hard Drive To Win 7 64 Hard Drive
I'm looking for a way to retain my video collection that doesn't involve moving all the files to an external drive and back again. I currently am formatting a new WD Caviar Black drive and am looking to install Windows 7 to this drive because it is faster than my current WD Caviar Blue drive. My blue drive has vista ultimate 64 bit installed is there anyway to move my data between the drives so I can reformat my primary drive (blue) and turn it into a storage disk (then make it a secondary) and use my new drive as the boot drive for windows 7? I have the MSDN release for Windows 7 Professional from my college that I burned to a bootable DVD.

Install Win 7 RC But Problem With Vista Hard Drive Partition
I am having a pretty big problem in my mind, I am trying to install the Windows 7 RC. I first tried installing it on my external hard drive because I was nervous about putting it on my laptops hard drive, but it didn't work. So now I am being forced to partition my hard drive and put it on but the problem is. I have a 160GB hard drive, and had a 10GB partition there when I bought the laptop and it was there for recovery etc, so I deleted that and was going to extend it but I wasn't able to. So I clicked on my main partition (c) and clicked shrink but it would only go down 3GB. And tried again but it said shrink to 0, so I wasn't able to shrink it any more. I tried defragging, turning off recovery points etc etc, and I looked it up and tried a lot of things and I know its because of a file(s) that can't be moved or something, and want to know if I can get past this? Or at least try installing it on the 10 GB partition (will it work, do I really need 16GB?)

Installing On New Hard Drive Vista Vs Win 7
I have a quad core i720 intel processor and the asus p6t deluxe V2 motherboard and a basic 512 video card. I installed Vista 64 bit first - took about 50 minutes. Then installed Windows 7 RC1 on a second hard drive (dual boot) and it installed in 20 minutes. It couldnt find the divers for chipset but shortly after it said I didnt have them installed (they werent available on the mb setup disk nor on Asus website) and it asked if I wanted them installed and windows installed the drivers. Much more intuitive. Also I looked at the processes running on initial startup - I had perhaps 8 on windows 7 and perhaps 25-30 on vista. That alone made me a believer. Now it wont run all of the software i would like to run (some antivirus and antispyware - spydoctor - zonealarm etc) but that was the same thing initially for vista. Oh superatispyware ran from the get go on vista and does on windows 7. I cant figure out why other antispyware and antivirus companies hem themselves and make a product that is so OS version specific. Overall I am impressed with windows 7 - far less processes running in the background. The beta of win 7 crashed when I tried to join my domain. Had to reinstall then I left well enough alone. The RC1 joined domain without a hitch. Less trouble than either XP or Vista. Runs my business programs just fine. been testing those for a month. Also pleased with the try before you buy concept. I can use the win 7 setup thhrough may 31 2010. Would like to see the price of the OS come down a bit. Close to $300 is a little steep to convert more of my machines to win 7. I am running a laptop with vista, 2 desktops with vista. and three desktops with XP.

New Hard Drive With New Win 7 Install
I want to replace my C drive with a new WD 640. Can I disconnect my existing C drive - 3 years of XP and 1000s of files; install new WD drive; format and do new install of W7. Question: when I reconnect old C drive, will W7 have access to all those old files? Seems like a simple way to clean install W7 - start with a NEW drive.

Partitioning A Hard Drive For Dual Booting Vista And Win 7
I have read the many other posts, and can't apply them to my problem. I go to disk management and when I try to shrink my C: volume to for a Windows 7 Partition, it tells me I only have 886 MB of availible shrink space. I have a 250GB hard drive and have run disk cleanup several times. My Computer tells me i have 146GB free. Why can i not shrink the volume? Can someone give me steps to follow.. I am by no means a pro, but am well above the average pc user. I don't want to format my C: drive.. that is the entire point of me dual booting. I'd rather not modify the coding manually, I have the Gparted CD ready to boot off, but i would rather not use it unless necessary... To this point I have used the start>right click my computer>manage>disk manager I run a HP HDX16, customized for performance, I have vista home 64bit, and i own a copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Install Win 7 To A Partition On A Seperate Hard Drive
I have Vista 64 bit and would like to install Win7 to a partition on a separate drive, I have the Win7 dvd and can boot from that BUT I don't want to mess up my Vista at all (already had to reinstall after a mistake). What's the safest way to install Win7 without risking my Vista ? (And not using a virtualpc). I've just installed EasyBCD in case I need that.

Can I Install Win 7 Onto An External USB Hard Drive ?
i've seen other answers to the question and I did managed to use it successfully with Windows XP with an external USB HDD. I would not recommend it on a thumbdrive (flash memory) beccause the temp file usage will kill the drive in days or weeks. But the external HDD works great. I can't provide all the exact details on how to do it, so please don't ask, but here's an excellent reference as a starting point for you: http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=14181 The only thing you have to remember is that, in spite of dire warnings about how impossible it is, it actually can be done and works just great.

Install Xp To Second Hard Drive On Native Win 7 64 Bit
The main thrust to all this is:why can't win 7 tell me or let me install an os to a separate hard drive that's ready to go for an install. I have a hard drive that is recognized in win 7/recognized confirmed formatted, NTFS basic, primary partition active. I want to install xp pro on it. But i can't get the install disc in the cd drive to ask/search for this drive [f] to install on. Tried copying all disc files to install to the desired drive, but again, get message have newer ms os[assume win 7 which is only on "c" drive].I don;t know why no path is offered. Not able to find help answer to this. I did see related post about using an acronis home 10 drive image: no goof proof answers there- I have another xp- xp media center 2005 imaged on acronis from that computer. that's my first choice. Goal: to get functionality for blu-ray playback. needed software compatibility not in win 7 64bit [yet?] software needed to support> anydvd hd, elby virtual clone, powerdvd ulta 9 for iso image playback. 1st pick-aconis image, don't care about getting on line, registered or anything to disable my registered xp media center on the acronis image. I just want its full remote functionality. 2nd pick- xp pro; I should get back program funtions without the remote ability. 3rd pick- Vista home premium 64bit, which had full functionality; being in a holiday hurry, I skipped making backup copies of this os that originally came with the computer [gateway DX4200] which did run everything. I install upgrade win 7 64 via custom to be clean. I hate vista, and now will have to spend $ i don;t have just to order installation discs, but doable. I assumed all this would be easy.

Unable To Install Win 7 On External Usb Hard Drive
Connected the external 160GB SATA hard drive using USB cable to Lenovo R61 laptop. Bootup the laptop with Windows 7 RC setup DVD disc. The Windows 7 installation recognised the external hard drive but when installing a the point to select the external hard drive as destination hard drive in custom setup, an error message prompted saying Windows 7 could not install on hard drive connected by usb. Inserted the external hard drive into the laptop and install Windows 7 without problem. Then took out the imaged hard drive and put it back into the external hard drive enclosure, connected back to the laptop and boot up from external hard drive. Got prompted to repair. After repair successful, Windows 7 kept reboot and prompted for repair. My questions are (1) any way to install Windows 7 to external hard drive connecting by usb? and (2) any way to rescue the image that already in the external hard drive so that it can bootup normally?

Migrating From Vista To 7 With A New Hard Drive
I have just pre-ordered Windows 7 Home Premium and I wondered if this scenario is possible: I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium on a single 500GB SATA hard drive. I am planning to order a new 1TB drive to copy all of the 500GB data/files/programs onto, and then format and use the 500GB drive to install Windows 7 onto. I am also planning to use a clone program such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost to complete this operation, but what I wanted to know is: Will the newly copied programs on the 1TB drive still work and be recognised by Windows 7 after I have installed it on the 500GB drive? And also: When cloning, is it possible to exclude the Vista OS files from being copied to the new drive (as I would not need/want Vista once I am on 7).

Install From XP - Hard Drive Still Full
Completed an install from XP to 7 by copying the install disk to my lap top hard drive, then running "setup". Thought that this would delete the all of the old files. And, indeed, when I search for known file names, the search comes up empty. However, the properties of the disk show the same amount of disk space used as before the install. How can I remove these "ghost" files?

Cannot Install To Unsupported Hard Drive
This is not Microsoft's problem. I have an unusual configuration and I thought I'd share the issue here. My hard drives are connected to a controller card. When I went to install Windows 7 RC, it could not find the hard drives. Naturally, it asked for a driver. My research showed that Promise, the card's manufacturer, did not have a driver for Windows 7. Maybe they never will. So, at least for now, I'll have to wait. Either Promise will come up with a driver, the final version of Windows 7 will have the driver, or I will replace my hardware (which is working fine for a "spare" computer).

Hard Drive Install Issue
Wanted to install Windows 7 Professional on a new 320GB hard drive. (Windows Vista was installed on an 80GB that was filled) #1. Installed new drive in system – had to format in Windows Vista (Assigned drive letter B: because c: was already in use by old drive) #2. Installed Windows 7 Pro on new 320GB B: drive #3. Booted to windows 7 on new drive (had to select between Windows 7 or Windows Vista because both drives were installed) #4. Copied user profiles from Windows Vista hard drive to Windows 7 hard drive. Problems #5. Windows search will not find anything in the users' documents folder, although everything is there. Document library will show when "arranged by folder" but if you change to "arrange by date modified" or anything else they all disappear. Also Windows file index will not index any files. #6. Unhooked old hard drive, new hard drive will not boot by itself, says invalid system disk

Second Hard Drive Disappears After Install
I built a dual core / pentium with 2 gb of ram. Installed vista, and couldn't figure out why it wasn't finding my secondary hard dive. After a few months, I finally found that the key to solving the problem was by going into the ADNINISTRATIVE TOOLS and doing something. Now, whenever I install windows 7; I have the same problem. When I install windows 7; it asks me if I want to install it on disk 0 or disk 1. So, windows 7 does find the second hard drive. But, after the install is complete, it only shows 1 hard drive. I'd like to do a fresh install of widows 7 rc 1, if anyone can help me out. I've found windows 7 to be faster and more stable than windows vista. I always backup my data files to my secondary hard drive, then do a clean installation of windows seven (even though it's only an RC 1 release). I don't dual boot or anything. any answers?

Install On An Unformatted Hard Drive
I have just finished building a new PC; i7-920, 6GB RAM, Asus P6Tse motherboard, Samsung DVD burner, WD Caviar Black 1TB hard drive and 4870 1GB video card.I am trying to install Windows 7 RC 64 bit version but am having constant 0xc00000e9 errors (kindly advising me that there is a problem with the USB, hard drive or CD drive without narrowing it down further). I have disabled the USB ports, swapped out the hard drive with an unused IDE drive I had lying around and swapped the DVD burner with a DVD reader I also had available with absolutely no luck.Initially, while I had the USB enabled, I had a USB keyboard and mouse connected but they hung hard when the error popped up (even the three finger salute did nothing) and so I tried a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, which at least give me the next screen after the error. That screen seems to allow me to retry the installation (with identical results) or to do a memory test, which it passed fine.I suspect from other comments that I need to reburn the DVD at a slower speed, so I'll try that. However, I do not have an installable version of any other OS and so have not been able to partition, format or test the new hard drive. I assume that the installation will do that, but thought I should check in case some imbecile decided that this was not necessary.

Hard Drive Failure After Fresh Install
I have just bought a brand new hard drive due to my last ones controller failed. Western Digital Caviar Black 500gb So the problem, Did a fresh install of win 7 (Build 7229) two nights ago, all installed perfectly, next day (yesterday) went to boot up pc and had the dos error message - Disk boot failure, please insert system disk and press enter. My first impression was it may have been an install failure, so i formatted the hard drive and reinstalled. shutdown the PC and rebooted up and i had the same error message, now after this, i got my failed hard drive out and after a lot of faffing around, BIOS found it and it gave me the same error message. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be. I have tried Windows startup repair, did not fix. BIOS settings are First boot device is Hard drive second boot device is CD-ROM (I have even swapped these around to boot from windows 7 and it just starts the setup procedure of installing windows drivers) I have even set boot order of HDDs so my main windows HDD is up top. Anyone got any clues.
