Then I store all my Data on other Harddrives.I want to upgrade my applications disk to a larger capacity, but I worry about maintaining the integrity of Disknames (IDs) so I won't have to re-install all my Applications again.My plan is to make an Image or Clone of the Apps disc on the New HD and then change the Name of the Apps disk ( D: ) to new name ( Z: ) . Then I would need to reboot, before naming the New Apps disc as the new D:the effect of rebooting without any Apps disc at all.. and would everything work after renaming the new Disc back to D: and making a final reboot?

I boutght an enclosure n plugged it using usb to another laptop so i can get my files, but when i click on the disk a window pops up saying disk is not formatted..i dont want to lose my files si i downloaded tesdisk. When i choose "Analyse" it seems that it finds four partitions, but above each one there's a warning "Incorrect number of heads/cylinders 255 (NFTS) ! =240 (HD) or Bad sector head and Bad Ending Head and Bad Starting head..I dont know what to do next.

I'm used to having total ownership in XP, so I started messing with the permissions and ownerships in my account all willy-nilly until - predictably - it's causing all kinds of weird behavior.I don't want to reinstall, instead I'd like to migrate to migrate to Windows 7's hidden super-administrator account and start using that as my default account. (This computer never hooks up to a network, so I'm not worried about using the super admin account on a daily basis.)What would be the best way to migrate my account's settings (programs, customizations, etc.) to the admin account, without also transferring the permissions and ownerships?

Feb 7, 2012I have a Dell inspiron 1545 with a pretty measly hard drive of 135gb. I have an old hard drive from another laptop which is 320gb and i'm wanting to upgrade. I have done this before but i just used all the installation disks to reinstall windows and everything onto the new hard drive. This time however, i want to be able to copy the whole contents of my current hard drive onto the new one so that when i swap them over and i boot up the computer it contains the operating system, software and files that are currently on the 135gb hard drive. I presume there is some sort of wires, software and housing that i might need to achieve this. So far i have been pointed in the direction of this software pack (Apricorn EZ Upgrade Universal Hard Drive Upgrade Kit (SATA and PATA 2.5" Notebook Drives) Deals, #EZ-UP-UNIVERSAL - Expansys.com UK) but i was wondering if there was a cheaper way to perform the required task.
I was also wondering if the new hard drive will affect battery life. The new one spins at 7200rpm compared to the old at 5400rpm.

Oct 18, 2011Recently my laptop crashed beyond repair, and has had to be rebuilt. It now operates on Windows 7.Luckily I had backed up some important files onto a portable external Lacie Hardrive. I now need to return some of the files back to the laptop so that I can use them..but I can't seem to find a way to do it!! I suppose I'm just being 'thick'..but can anyone tell me how to do it.

Hard Disk / Failed To Lock Drive
Dec 22, 2011I am running windows 7 64 bit, on an eMachines lap top, I have purchased an external HDD and now I am trying to create a perfect copy of my system. I used DriveImage XML but it failed. I have used this program in the past with great success on a different computer running WindowsXP.The failure I get is "failed to lock drive". I've tried skipping the lock drive option and going straight to shadow copy; same problem.I can only assume the failure to lock drive is based on permissions and files being in use. So I think I need to attempt this without loading windows. Is there anyway of running a "free" drive cloning program from a DVD or USB Flash drive without booting into Windows?I would just bit torrent a win7 OS, install it on my external, and run the program from their, but I don't want to have to resort to law breaking, and I have never run linux.
Also I tried using a "backup" feature on Paragon Partition Manager, it did "backup" the system, but it didn't clone the drive. All the backup files are written in directories such as "C:/archive/" and thus I assume there is no way of booting into a system written that way. I assume it's like windows system restore, and what I need is a bootable image of my primary drive.Oh and I should clarify, that it's not my external drive that fails to lock; the external HDD has been formatted, partitioned, and can read and write data just fine, and has way more than enough room to copy the HDD in my lap top.Also, the HDD on my lap top has 1 primary partition, with two logical partitions. I have no idea what the logical partitions are for and if that could be causing the problem.
External Hard Drive Image Failed
Nov 1, 2009I have two internal 500Gb SATA drives and one external 500Gb ESATA drive.
I wanted to have 2 backups images of my drive as a safety measure. One on the internal and one on the external ESATA drive.
The backup image on the internal drive took about 25 minutues and seems OK. The image size is about 75Gb.
I then tried a second backup on my external drive. ESATA is supposed to be faster than USB. After about three and a half hours the backup stopped and said that it had failed. Any ideas please?
Striped Hard Drives One Failed And Is Now A Cd Drive
Jul 3, 2012I had a striped hard drive set up because I thought it was cool to make 2 500's a 1 tb. it broke. but now one of em went off the reservation and now wants to be a cd drive after reformatted the drive that was working.can't see the errant drive in disk management but in computer (windows 7, custom build) it's my new cd drive witch claims to be my H: drive.

SSD runs on a flash based chip ... it is very stable but mean time it has huge access point of data that why it is fast. The reason i am thinking that SSD is killing my other drives is because my setup is a Media center. Software such as windows media center and media browser keep accessing my 2 TB Hitachi drive for movies, TV show and so on .. SSD in my opinion is running other drive to max point of spin and read/write in same time. which could caused these drive either over heat or over used that is just a theroy of mine

May 7, 2009I have a quad core i720 intel processor and the asus p6t deluxe V2 motherboard and a basic 512 video card. I installed Vista 64 bit first - took about 50 minutes. Then installed Windows 7 RC1 on a second hard drive (dual boot) and it installed in 20 minutes.
It couldnt find the divers for chipset but shortly after it said I didnt have them installed (they werent available on the mb setup disk nor on Asus website) and it asked if I wanted them installed and windows installed the drivers. Much more intuitive.
Also I looked at the processes running on initial startup - I had perhaps 8 on windows 7 and perhaps 25-30 on vista. That alone made me a believer.
Now it wont run all of the software i would like to run (some antivirus and antispyware - spydoctor - zonealarm etc) but that was the same thing initially for vista. Oh superatispyware ran from the get go on vista and does on windows 7. I cant figure out why other antispyware and antivirus companies hem themselves and make a product that is so OS version specific.
Overall I am impressed with windows 7 - far less processes running in the background.
The beta of win 7 crashed when I tried to join my domain. Had to reinstall then I left well enough alone. The RC1 joined domain without a hitch. Less trouble than either XP or Vista.
Runs my business programs just fine. been testing those for a month.
Also pleased with the try before you buy concept. I can use the win 7 setup thhrough may 31 2010.
Would like to see the price of the OS come down a bit. Close to $300 is a little steep to convert more of my machines to win 7. I am running a laptop with vista, 2 desktops with vista. and three desktops with XP.
Migrating From Vista To 7 With A New Hard Drive
Aug 26, 2009I have just pre-ordered Windows 7 Home Premium and I wondered if this scenario is possible:
I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium on a single 500GB SATA hard drive.
I am planning to order a new 1TB drive to copy all of the 500GB data/files/programs onto, and then format and use the 500GB drive to install Windows 7 onto.
I am also planning to use a clone program such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost to complete this operation, but what I wanted to know is:
Will the newly copied programs on the 1TB drive still work and be recognised by Windows 7 after I have installed it on the 500GB drive?
And also: When cloning, is it possible to exclude the Vista OS files from being copied to the new drive (as I would not need/want Vista once I am on 7).
Hard Drive (with Vista In It) Is Not Working
Aug 13, 2012I posted a separate thread about my son's laptop (hard drive problem). The hard drive (with Vista in it) is not working, and is permanently damaged (we tried to extract the data by putting the hd into an external enclosure, but while other hd's work in this enclosure, this hd does not respond at all, so it's in the trash now). My question is, if I buy a brand new hard drive and buy a fresh Windows 7 disk, would the machine take Win7? If yes, which version (upgrade, full version, etc.) of Win7 should I get? Here are the specs of the laptop:
- Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916
- 4GB RAM (DDR2, I think)
- Vista
- No hard drive at this point, it came with a 320gig hd

In this Seagate HDD I have 2 partitions, C 40 GB and D 40 GB.Suppose I purchase a new drive and make a 200 GB C partition, is there a way to successfully transfer everything including the settings and Windows from the old 40 GB on Seagate to the new 200 GB partition?I'm thinking about Norton Ghost but have never had any experience of using it for this kind of scenario.

Feb 26, 2012I have 2x160gb intel SSD disks running as RAID0. Recently my motherboard had failed and I replaced it with new one (different model). Couldn't access OS because apparently some RAID data is kept on the motherboard and that was gone, so I decided to use a backup. Booted from windows 7 installation disk and selected backup,
I click on 'repair', get to the 'select a system image backup'. Select 'use the latest available system image (recommended). Click 'next' I get the message 'all disk to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image'. Click Yes. But then got an error saying:
"The system image restore failed. The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)"
Disk is completely empty with only 1 partition (deleted all partitions and reformatted and then created one). Before motherboard problem I had several partitions, but I imagine that restore would recreate them. Why do I get 'disk to small error' when I am restoring on the same disk? RAID configuration problem? Could stripe size be an issue here?

Jan 21, 2012I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (2.5 years old). All my data is backed up so I have no concerns about recoverying data.First, the laptop crashed and ran several chkdsk on start up. I froze several times during this. It said it had fixed some errors then started up again.This time it wanted to do start up repair. Same thing kept happening, froze at least twenty times during this. Eventually it gave me the blue screen of death.

This repeated several times. I ran the diagnostics and it told me the hard drive could not be found (error code 0146, 2000-0146). Essentially, it's a Dell laptop (I know) and I am not bothered about recovering the hard drive.I would, however, like to install Windows 7, or alternatively Linux, onto my external hard drive. But I just can't seem to get it to work.I have extracted a Linux iso to the external hard drive I want to install on, onto a cd, onto a FAT32 8gb usb stick, but it has given me the bootmgr is missing error every time. I have tried it with the interal HDD in and removed.I am no longer concerned about the internal HDD, i can use it for a door stop for all I am concerned, I just want to load ANY os onto my external hard drive so I can get the laptop working.
