Resetting Security Settings On A Hard Drive?

Jun 24, 2012

I've messed up the security settings on one of my drives such that I can't encrypt any file or folder on that drive.

I get a message saying "you will need to provide administrator permission". This is even though I am the administrator and I have ownership and control of the drive and the folders and files on it. Weird, right?

Is there any way to reset the permission on a drive short of formatting it?

Security Settings On Drive Set To Deny All For Everyone

Jun 19, 2012

Somehow a drive on one of my work computers got the security permissions for "everyone" set to deny. I need some type of work around to reset the permissions or a way to recover the data from the drive so I can format it. The bottom line is I need the data, so whatever I can do to make that happen I will do.

Resetting Security Setting To Default Via Defltbase.inf

Dec 7, 2009

I'm a recovering victim of the "C: is not accessible" bug.

I recently found this which uses cmd to edit security settings:

Sample command to reset security settings:-

The steps below do not apply to Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium editions. To restore security setting for Home editions, either use the Microsoft Fix, System Restore or a backup.Note After security settings are applied, you cannot undo the changes without restoring from a backup.

If you are uncertain about how to restore your security settings to the default settings, you must make a complete backup that includes the System State (the registry files). Items that are reset include NTFS file system files and folders, the registry, policies, services, permissions , and group membership.

To restore your operating system to the original installation default security settings, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

In Windows XP, type the following command, and then press ENTER:secedit /configure /cfg %windir%
epairsecsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose.

In Windows Vista, type the following command, and then press ENTER:secedit /configure /cfg %windir%infdefltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose.

You receive a "Task is completed" message and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message. For more information about this message, see the %windir%SecurityLogsScesrv.log file.

Next steps After you run this Microsoft Fix it (or complete these manual steps), standard user accounts may no longer appear on the log on screen when you start your computer or try to switch users. This occurs because standard user accounts are removed from the Users group when you reset Windows security settings. To add the affected users accounts back to the Users group, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then All Programs. Or click Programs.

2. Click Accessories, and then click Command Prompt (Windows XP). Or right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run As Administrator (Windows Vista).

3. In the Command Prompt window, type net users and then press ENTER. A list of user accounts is displayed.

4. For each account name listed in the Command Prompt that is missing from the log on or switch user screen, type the following command and then press ENTER:

net local group users account name /add

5. Now go to the "Did this fix the problem?" section.

More information In Windows Vista, the Defltbase.inf file is a Security configuration template for the default security. You can view the settings for this file in the following location: %windir%infdefltbase.inf

'Folder View' Settings Keep Resetting To Default

Aug 6, 2012

I installed a program the other day that messed with my Windows Explorer. Now no folder will remember it's View options (Large Icons, List, Details), they all reset to their default.

As you can see it's nothing to do with Libraries. Neither the 'Shell Fix' nor editing the registry at

has fixed it.

Windows Resetting Startup Settings To Defaults?

Oct 10, 2012

OK I'm not sure what happened but I'll try and explain. So last night I shut down my computer like normal and this morning I started up the computer like normal and it looked like everything was fine. The swirling windows logo showed up like it should but right after that it said windows is preparing to start a new session or something along those linesAfter logging in it seemed everything was set to default, all my programs and files were there but everything was reset. When I clicked on the start button you usually get a list of recently used programs above the list all programs button but there was nothing there. Also the task bar was empty as well. I did a restore and it seemed to fix the problem but I'm just wondering why it would do that just right out of the blue.

Arrange External Hard Drive Security Options?

Mar 6, 2011

Some files in my external drive has a lock symbol near them, some don't. Why is this happening?

I am using Microsoft Sync and recently I had to use "Run as Administrator" for it because some files were "access denied". (I am using the drive in different operating systems in different partitions).

Should I run Sync in administrator mode, or regular? How should I arrange the security for the drive? Should I add users or everyone? (now it is creator owner, system, administrators and me -I am administrator and only user-).

I got confused because before I didn't need to use the administrator mode for syncing and I don't want it to cause problems when syncing, not to miss any files.

(When I try to give myself -username-pc/username- full control, after that it still returns to not full control, no permissions for the drive are inherited )

Swap Hard Drive On Identical PCs And Retain All Programs, And Settings

Jun 26, 2012

I currently have an HP Pavillion G70 that has some broken hardware (hinges for screen) but other wise works fine. It's running Windows 7, Ultimate - 32 bit.

I'd like to buy a used version of the same PC model and simply swap the hard drive from mine into the purchased PC.

Will this retain all the programs, settings and files? Or are there some things that are tied to the motherboard or other hardware devices.

Windows Security - Can't Change Settings

Nov 2, 2011

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5732Z, the specs are:
CPU - T4400
RAM - 3.00 GB
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, no SP1 yet
the hard drive is about 250gb, with most of that space free, and just 1 visible partition.

It has 2 problems
1) It takes a long time to boot up, it used to be excessively slow in windows but removing Norton 360 seems to have solved that part. I can time it if needed.
2) A lot of the programs on the system are blocked by windows security, causing the orange "These files can't be opened" error message to pop up.

These include gfxUI.exe (the UI for the onboard graphics), the installer for Crap Cleaner, the installer for Service Pack 1, the add new user window, and a load of other files I don't have a list of. There's only 1 account on the system, and it's an admin account. I've tried to use the run as admin option where possible.

Here's what I've done so far:
- Reinstalled intel graphics drivers, no effect
- Ran a startup repair, after an hour it hadn't loaded.
- Uninstalled norton 360, system speed improved by several hundred times, otherwise no effect, and bootup time still seems as long.
- Gone into windows firewall and reset all settings to default, no effect.
- Tried to change the settings in internet security, set everything low except for my computer, which is locked, no effect
- Gone into internet security and clicked set all zones to default, no effect

I tried to install SP1 (after failing several times before due to the system being too slow to install it), security blocked it, then apparently deleted the installer. I tried to make a new user account, to copy the registry settings for the security to overwrite the faulty settings on the main account, the new user account window was blocked by security.

In a cmd window run as admin, used command
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%infdefltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
gave a progress report, completed, no effect.

I backed up important data, tried to reinstall windows from scratch, the installer doesn't load, after clicking install now it just starts loading and doesn't stop. At this point, I thought it must be a hardware issue, so I tried to run some diagnostics from a bootable CD. It wouldn't read the CD.

Programs Freezing In Windows 7 - Security Settings Maybe?

Feb 2, 2012

I think it may be a security policy setting on the PC. The issue is that I had to change some settings because we access a UNIX server for our old ERP, a Windows Server2008 for our new ERP, and use Windows Server2003s for our VPN, File and Domain controllers. For workstations we have a mix of XP, and Win7 machines. The only computers having issues are the Win7 machines. We use Dell Vostro 460's, doubt the stats are really necessary. But they run Win7 Professional 64-bit.So I had to flip the following settings to communicate with the UNIX server:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level = Send NTLMv2 responses onlyNetwork security: Mininum session security for NTLM SSP Based (both on the client and server) = No minimum (from 128-bit default)Network security: Restrict NTLM: Add remote server exceptions for NTLM authentication = I input the domain IP addresses and server nameNetwork security: Restrict NTLM: Add server exceptions in this domain = I input the domain IP addresses and server name
The only other system changes I made were dropping the User Account Control Settings to the second to the lowest setting (Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer...) because the constant pop ups are annoying. I also set the network user login as an administrator on their local computers when I set up their accounts on their computers.A few different scenarios play out:

1. When one of my employees is trying to access a network file (excel), she is unable to. The program will launch, but the file cannot be opened from her workstation. IN the lower right hand corner of the Excel window I will see the progress bar move, then it does nothing. The program will hang and has to be force closed. This file is on a shared drive on a Win2003 server (completely open to all domain users.)

2. When trying to save an IE9 file, the user is not able to change their target location, and when they do, it freezes IE9.

3. When trying to attach a file to an e-mail, the users are not able to browse their computers to find the files they want to attach.

BIOS Disk Error - Resetting Boot Priority To Correct Drive?

Jan 27, 2012

When there is a Restart required after a software upgrade, the BIOS on my system (Win 7/64) will go to an external HDD (I have three for storage and backup). If I force it off and go into the BIOS on startup, it will show any of the other three HDD's in the boot priority. I reset the priority to the correct drive, save and start (repeat this process several times) and finally it will start from the correct HDD. I thought it might be the CMOS battery but with a new battery in place I still ran into this. This system (HP desktop) is less than a year old.

Upgrading Hard Drive On A Solid State/Hard Drive System?

Oct 25, 2011

So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?
