Swap Hard Drive On Identical PCs And Retain All Programs, And Settings
Jun 26, 2012
I currently have an HP Pavillion G70 that has some broken hardware (hinges for screen) but other wise works fine. It's running Windows 7, Ultimate - 32 bit.
I'd like to buy a used version of the same PC model and simply swap the hard drive from mine into the purchased PC.
Will this retain all the programs, settings and files? Or are there some things that are tied to the motherboard or other hardware devices.

I currently have Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit edition installed on my machine. (listed in my sig)
I am considering getting an x58/Core i7 920
Will i be able to just swap my hard drive from one motherboard to another or do you thing a fresh install is at hand?
In the past i have been able to swap hard drives from one gigabyte motherboard to another (both LGA 775) but i'm not sure if i will be able to do this from LGA 775 to LGA 1366.

I have Win 7 ver 6.1 (build 7600) on Desktop and I have a Linux server. I don't use a password to logon to windows.
I successfully mapped Linux drives using my Linux user (which happens to be the same as the windows user) but on Linux I have a password. All the mappings were OK (4 directories) asking me on each one username + password + ticking the box called "retain credentials".
All went OK until I rebooted, then a message pop-up that "could not reconnect all network drives"...appeared: => the old stupid message from win XP.
Ok I opened My computer and surprise: My user and my password from the sharing pop-up window were gone! I've inserted them again and all went OK.
I thought they solved the old windows XP problem which clears the user + password from the Network drive mapping IF you do not have the SAME password as the mapped drives.
What can I do to retain that User+Password combination for good in Win 7 Mapping?

I've messed up the security settings on one of my drives such that I can't encrypt any file or folder on that drive.
I get a message saying "you will need to provide administrator permission". This is even though I am the administrator and I have ownership and control of the drive and the folders and files on it. Weird, right?
Is there any way to reset the permission on a drive short of formatting it?

I have two laptops that are identical...HP Compaq nw9440. I have a 100gig drive in LAPTOP#1, and a 750gig drive in LAPTOP#2. Both drives are running an identical Windows 7 Enterprise typical install. Can I put the 750gig drive in to LAPTOP#1? Can I create and save an NTBTLOG.txt file from each laptop (I.E. ntbtlog-LP1.txt) and select either one during the boot-up? The reason is LAPTOP#2 is not running very well. It has been dropped and I fear the motherboard may have a crack in it causing random boot problems. Sometimes the laptop doesn't even recognize the hard drive.

When I turn it on windows starts fine but no programs show on the desktop or start menu. I originaly thought everything was gone but all of the virus protection loaded and seems to run fine, and I can run the programs that appear in the notifactation toolbar. When looking at C: it is empty, no folders, nothing! In the add/remove programs it shows everything is still installed. So i am making the assumption that all of the files and programs are still on the hard drive and intact. So at this point i am trying to figure out if this is a hard drive issue or most likely a windows problem.

So, I order a new custom computer and want to install my two old hardrives from my current computer. Both hardrives have lots of programs and info on them. The main on has windows 7 32 bit installed plus several programs. The new computer will have windows 7 64bit. Is it possible to install the old hard drive and access all the programs and files on it even though it has an operating system on it? Can I just transfer all those programs and files from the old one and reformat it to free space or is there a way to just remove the operation system and still access the the files and programs?

I'm about to get a 2 terabyte external hard drive and I would like to move all my user installed programs to it without uninstalling them and reinstalling to the new drive. My question is....1. Is it safe to drag and drop the program files from C: to the new drive, and 2. If it's not a good idea to perform a drag and drop is there another option?

I have been running happily with an All in One Medion desk top, which I have modified slightly. It is really a notebook chip based system, only two sata outputs, but it does have a touchscreen and digital tuner. It is a 2.3Ghz Pentium dual core. 4 GB mem and 1.5 TB over two drives.
I pulled the DVD drive out of sata 2 port and fitted it in an external housing on a USB port. Then I wired the sata 2 port out via an eSata socket to a sata HDD docking station.
I have been running six months with two versions of Win 7 Home premium 64bit in dual boot mode with no probs. Last week I decided to replace the 64 bit with a 32 bit version so as to run some older programs.
So I formatted the external 1TB drive and loaded win 7 32x from the original disks. Took while with all the updates and SP1.
While doing this, I had no problem with the DVD drive but, as soon as I was up and running, the DVD drive stopped reading disks. Swap boot back into Windows 7 64 bit and it is fine, boot from Windows 7 32 bit and it is a dodo. It recognises the drive ID but will not open a file or boot from a bootable disk. I have checked for out of date or missing drivers but nothing shows.
I suspect I have a protocol problem, Not sure. It appears to be using a new Windows 7 sp1 driver. Or maybe something wrong in Global settings.

What do with the the swap file on my SSD. It's a new OCZ Agility 3 with updated firmware. I also have an older Crucial SSD where I'd like to implement the same strategy.I'm debating putting my swap file on the HD to get it off the SSD but I'd like the hard drives to spin down when not in use. One box will be a media center PC that will be always on and having hard drives constantly spinning seems like overkill. If I put a swap file on the HD, will that drive ever go into sleep mode? I'm guessing no. Right now, I'm leaning towards small swap file on the SSDs say (512 to 2048). It'll also be easier to deal with if I ever decided to swap out or rearrange the HDS.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit system, over 250gig free on Hard drive and 8 gig RAM. For whatever reason, This Windows 7 does not go back on earlier RESTORE points that I know I had set months ago....Is this a general problem with windows 7, or is there something that is not configured correctly, for Windows 7 to retain prior months restore points. What can I do to ensure restore points are created and kept for an extended period of time, given that I have plenty of Hard Disk space?

Something I like and can't seem to get Win 7 to do for me. I open a window for my computer, size it and set it at the upper left of my screen. I open folders in new windows; i.e. open the D: Drive and position it next to the window I opened for my computer. Close both. When I open my computer again it is now in the position where I opened the D: Drive. How do I get specific windows to retain the size and position I set each time I open them rather then simply pick up the size and position of the last window I opened?

I have a hard drive I want to backup to a 64gb flash drive and then restore it to another different hard drive than where it came from. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.
