I am attempting to help my friend. Has old laptop, been making system image backups with Macrium Free on external usb WD Hardrive. Now wishes to get new laptop and transfer pertinent data and programs to the new computer. I haven't a clue. He had not installed the HD programming, using macrium instead.

View 3 Replies View Relatedinstalled a 60GB SSD a couple of years ago when they were quite expensive. I planned to use it solely for the operating system (Windows 7 Ultimate x 64). However over the years, it has become full to overflowing. I would like to clean it up and return it to the operating system only. Unfortunately I do not have the original disks or access to the installation programs for most of the information on the SSD. I have two other hard drives in the system - a 500GB Velociraptor that I originally wanted to hold all the programs and a 1000GB for the data. Can anyone tell me the best way to transfer the data off the SSD without screwing up my system?

The way I did this was to open my external hard drive and at the same time opened Windows Media Player on my computer and dragged the files from the external hard drive onto the new computer, everything seemed to be ok, all the music was organized in genre and albums titles etc, however when I tried to open a file to play a window came up telling me that the file was empty, I know that the music files can be playe3d on my external harde drive.
I have an external hard drive, I copied onto the computer but the files are confusing. There are 279 files and files within files. How do I get them back to their original format for example word, excel, etc.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.
I have tried:
- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.
As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.
Recently my laptop crashed beyond repair, and has had to be rebuilt. It now operates on Windows 7.Luckily I had backed up some important files onto a portable external Lacie Hardrive. I now need to return some of the files back to the laptop so that I can use them..but I can't seem to find a way to do it!! I suppose I'm just being 'thick'..but can anyone tell me how to do it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a message about errors when I plugged in my WD external hard drive. I let the Error Checking run and when it finished it said I needed to format the disk. I cancelled this and looked in my computer and although the drive appeared, no details (i.e. space usage) was present.
I re-ran Error Checking with "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. After running this the drive appeared properly in My Computer.
However there are many files missing, and the space usage of what is there doesn't match up with what my computer says.
Files I can physically see: ~ 120 Gb. Space usage according to Explorer: ~420 Gb. So it looks like tha data may still be there but Windows can't see it? Edit: BTW, forgot to say, all this is booted into Windows 7 not XP on my dual boot system.
My western digital usb 3.0 external hard drive is giving only 1 MB/Sec transfer rate. I know its really very slow. Can any one let me know what we could do increase the speed.

I figured it would be a piece of cake to mount the old HD via a USB connection and run Windows 7 Easy Transfer to migrate things from there to the new computer.I had to copy everything over manually, one profile at a time.
This seems like an obvious scenario that WET should handle but it doesn't. Was there any other automated process I could have used? Just curious at this point as the work has already been done and the new computer is up and running.

I have a newer computer (HP Pavilion Slimline) with Windows 7 and 64bit system. My old hard drive is out of a dead (won't power up) HP Pavilion Slimline Vista 32bit. I pulled the old drive and connected it through a harness and the USB on the new computer. When I open the devices and printers program the old drive is there but when I open the icon all I get is the properties etc. but no way to access any data on the old drive. Do I need a program or is the drive dead? It powers and runs and when it is connected and I open the properties I'm told the old drive is working properly.

First detected this problem while I was transferring some data through LAN. This problem occurs even when I am copying data from my C drive to D drive. I was able to copy a 700MB file onto the drive.

I'm having some trouble getting an external hard drive to be recognized by my computer. I have quite a few already, but I got another one because one of them won't read on my comp, although it will read on my netbook. The new drive I got has the same issue, no go on the comp, but works fine on the netbook.
I tried unplugging all of the other drives and even using the other cables to connect the new drive, but Windows 7 simply won't recognize it being plugged in. No "badump" sound and no icon in My Computer. Tried restarting, nothing. I tried it in all six of my computer's USB ports, but got no better result.
I got a problem, my external hard drive (westen digital 1.0TB) isn't popping up my computer. I can see it in devices (USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge) but i can't acces it.What i've done already:Computer Management-> Disk Management. Than ive to initialize the disk, i can choose between MBR and GPT. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have attached a Seagate 500 GG external hard drive to my computer but it is not showing up in My Computer.I have browsed similar threads and on their advice gone into Device Manager.The drive is there but with no letter assigned to it but when I right click to assign one, it refers me to Windows Help, which is unable to solve the problem. There are actually two extra ikons in Device Manager - one marked FAT Healthy (EISA Configuration) and the other just marked (GPT Protective Partition).The device is acknowledged as working properly in Device Manager.The files on this drive were created on a Mac, which may be the source of the problem? A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.
