I'm about to get a 2 terabyte external hard drive and I would like to move all my user installed programs to it without uninstalling them and reinstalling to the new drive. My question is....1. Is it safe to drag and drop the program files from C: to the new drive, and 2. If it's not a good idea to perform a drag and drop is there another option?

How can programs and folders/files be moved to a different location and have all the registry information changed so it's all correct within Windows?
View 9 Replies View RelatedFirst time poster here. I messed up big time trying to get my dell 1747 to dual boot in xp and win 7, i think. I installed xp on to an external hard drive via and esata connection. Now it won't boot without the external hard drive connected and of course will only boot in xp. The xp disc manager say that windows 7 is the primary os which confused me. I Tried the windows 7 recovery disc but it won't boot. I'm completely lost here, and I'm looking for the first step to take. AS it stands I have a C:RECOVERY, D:Fantom(my external to which i installed xp) and E: OS, why is E labeled OS? I could really use some help here.I can't uninstall xp in safe mode with administrator access. I'm wondering if i format the D drive containing Windows xp, if I will Automatically boot from my previous windows 7?

I just took the HD from my old comp, and added it 2 the new system, hoping that i could run some programs from it on the new comp, (because i've lost install cd's etc..) Everythings fine except, I cant run any of the programs. Like, Old drive has Microsoft Digital Media Edition. I tried to open it & run the install, but the new comp says.. cant access registry. The small USB connector broke off the board yesterday and I purchased a new enclosure and installed it. Now my computer does not recognize it as a storage device. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. However, I want to some how put my users folder and program files folder onto my 500GB HD. Ive tried multiple times to mess with the registry settings but it doesnt seem to work..? View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

So far, people have managed to be very helpful with the previous questions, hopefully someone can do so here too.Reinstalling all my games to external hard drive, need to know if they will / how to make them appear / function properly in my GEF, whether added automatically or manually.I am basically going to have EVERYTHING put onto my 1TB external, and by everything I mean "Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents, Games, and maybe Programs". So, I made a folder for each of those things on it,and only now that I am reinstalling my games into the Programs one have I realized something.I am a bit obsessive about having a fully functioning Game Explorer Folder (GEF) with all my games visible in it. It's my assumption that when I install into an external hard drive, none of those games will be automatically added into the GEF. However, if I add them in manually (using the regedit method in the tutorial), should everything function properly, so long as I have my external hard drive on whenever I use the computer?I just need this to be confirmed before I start reinstalling more. Also, if not, please let me know if there IS a way to get them to show up in my GEF properly, or possibly move the GEF to the external hard drive or get it to recognize things from a different directory.

Will I see any drop off in quality of playback or computer performance if I use a drive like this (external, USB) to store all of my recorded videos. The tuner and Media center would save everything directly to this drive and play everything directly from it. Would that cause any problems at all? I notice that it requires no power adapter since it's USB powered, and it has a Interface Transfer Rate of 480 Mbps -- not sure how either of these apply to my potential use of it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy HP Pavilion DV7 4267CL's hard drive went out last week. I bought a new one, the same brand name and specifications. I installed the drive, turned it on, inserted the first disc, restarted it and follow the prompts. I selected to reset factory default and continue to follow the on screen prompts. After installing all four discs, it restarted by itself and gave me an HP logo. It ask me to restart to complete installation. When it restarted again, it gave me a bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart. I pressed it and it gave me the same error again. I did all the reinstallation 3x but no luck. I was getting the same error. So, I went to the bio boot utility by restarting the pc and preesing F10 while booting. I rearrange the booting sequence, dvd/cd rom drive, internal computer hard drive restarted it, inserted the first disc, turned off pc and reinstalled it and all 3 other discs. But at the end, I'm still getting the same error.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just added a new hard drive to replace the old one that is apparently corrupted. And I'm not sure what I did wrong. I was told to unplug the power supply and the old hd. Add the new one, and power it back up with the Windows 7 installation dvd. Did that and in trying to change the order in witch it boots to cd-rom, it shows sata hd not present? I don't know why, I replaced the cords in the right place. Do I need to configure it, if so how?

Ive taught myself everything i do know and this is beyond my knowledge. Is there anything i could have done wrong? when i restart the pc it shows up as S.M.A.R.T Error. or something along those lines. Windows 7 64 bit, any other information needed will be provided.
