View 1 RepliesI have a terabyte external, WD Element I think. I have never had an issues before but today I plug it in (to play Diablo III) and it is not being recognized. At all. It's not in Disk Management, I can't find it anywhere. Suggestions or reasons this might be happening out of no where??
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use a lot of different usb hard drives in my shop. I have two basic enclosures, a generic one that uses pata drives on a usb 2.0 cable and an Apricon USB SATA 2.0 adapter.Suddenly when I plug in a new drive device manager does see the drive and installs it in device manager. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it has no drive letter assigned, and therefore doesn't show up in Computer. I can easily just assign a letter in Disk Management and the drive immediately becomes usable. However, I would like to get Windows 7 to resume automatically assigning a drive letter.
I have tried a program called USB DriveCleanup. What it appears to have done is remove all installations of prior USB drives and when I plug in a drive that has been in the machine previously it then goes thru the install again. Yet still no drive letter. I think the program is doing what would manually be done by going into safe mode and cleaning out all the entries that build up there that don't appear in normal mode, then removes them. Basically it seems like a shortcut to manually doing it.
I also tried a registry fix that essentially asked me to delete the upper and lower filters. This seems similiar to fix for CD/DVD drives that no longer appear in Computer. This fix also didn't work.I tried removing and reinstalling the chipset drivers. Still no go.Running Windows 7 Pro SP1, H55 chipset.
I created a 20gb partition on my external hard drive and no longer require the partition. It is currently unallocated space so I want to format it into NFTS. Using computer management the partition was selected and and I went through the steps to format but i keep on getting an error message saying there is not enough space on the disk to complete this operation.

I have quite a few already, but I got another one because one of them won't read on my comp, although it will read on my netbook. The new drive I got has the same issue, no go on the comp, but works fine on the netbook.
I tried unplugging all of the other drives and even using the other cables to connect the new drive, but Windows 7 simply won't recognize it being plugged in. No "badump" sound and no icon in My Computer. Tried restarting, nothing. I tried it in all six of my computer's USB ports, but got no better result.
I got a problem, my external hard drive (westen digital 1.0TB) isn't popping up my computer. I can see it in devices (USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge) but i can't acces it.What i've done already:Computer Management-> Disk Management. Than ive to initialize the disk, i can choose between MBR and GPT. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have attached a Seagate 500 GG external hard drive to my computer but it is not showing up in My Computer.I have browsed similar threads and on their advice gone into Device Manager.The drive is there but with no letter assigned to it but when I right click to assign one, it refers me to Windows Help, which is unable to solve the problem. There are actually two extra ikons in Device Manager - one marked FAT Healthy (EISA Configuration) and the other just marked (GPT Protective Partition).The device is acknowledged as working properly in Device Manager.The files on this drive were created on a Mac, which may be the source of the problem? Most of them I will therefore not be able to read, but there is one which is a .mov file which I should be able to read and hopefully copy - if I can access it.Is there any way I can access the drive via my PC (Windows XP) or will the drive have been formatted for Mac only and therefore is inaccessible via PC?

A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

So far, people have managed to be very helpful with the previous questions, hopefully someone can do so here too.Reinstalling all my games to external hard drive, need to know if they will / how to make them appear / function properly in my GEF, whether added automatically or manually.I am basically going to have EVERYTHING put onto my 1TB external, and by everything I mean "Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents, Games, and maybe Programs". So, I made a folder for each of those things on it,and only now that I am reinstalling my games into the Programs one have I realized something.I am a bit obsessive about having a fully functioning Game Explorer Folder (GEF) with all my games visible in it. It's my assumption that when I install into an external hard drive, none of those games will be automatically added into the GEF. However, if I add them in manually (using the regedit method in the tutorial), should everything function properly, so long as I have my external hard drive on whenever I use the computer?I just need this to be confirmed before I start reinstalling more. Also, if not, please let me know if there IS a way to get them to show up in my GEF properly, or possibly move the GEF to the external hard drive or get it to recognize things from a different directory.

Will I see any drop off in quality of playback or computer performance if I use a drive like this (external, USB) to store all of my recorded videos. The tuner and Media center would save everything directly to this drive and play everything directly from it. Would that cause any problems at all? I notice that it requires no power adapter since it's USB powered, and it has a Interface Transfer Rate of 480 Mbps -- not sure how either of these apply to my potential use of it.

I plugged it one day into the PC and it couldn 't be detected in my computer. it shows up in devices and printers and also in disk management. I read on some forums to try and initialize it but it gives me an error saying cyclic redundancy check. I 've tried everything but still not working. this is a new hard drive which has never fell and no physical damage. and please don' t tell me to return it cos it was bought in another country. the only option right now is to fix it?

I use it as my main backup drive and when writing to it using either of the two backup apps I use the drive usually "disconnects" and I have to switch it off and on again to use it.I've tried using a different USB port and a different USB cable - same thing. I have run Windows 7 error-checking checking which reports no errors.When it disconnects, device manager shows that it is still connected and working but it definitely doesn't work. For instance, I can double click and open it but it shows no folders. Switching it off and then on fixes this but only temporarily.

I am very careful to be sure it is not in use but still get the message. This is a data storage disc. I am not aware of any programs on it that may be running in the background. Is there a way to examine a disc to see just what is being used on it at any given time?
