I created a 20gb partition on my external hard drive and no longer require the partition. It is currently unallocated space so I want to format it into NFTS. Using computer management the partition was selected and and I went through the steps to format but i keep on getting an error message saying there is not enough space on the disk to complete this operation.
View 1 RepliesI've had my partitions over several drives set for many months. Suddenly on boot this morning, one of the partitions isn't recognized by Windows (7 64-bit). My partition software (EaseUS Partition Manager Pro) does "see" it and shows the correct division of used and unused space. This is an NTFS partition with 11.86 GB capacity and 2.50 GB used. The status is None and the type is logical.The error message box title is "Location is not available". The message is:H: is not accessible.The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.I've had no activity in this partition for several days. The partitions on either side are fine (fingers crossed they stay that way!). They same the same characteristics (although obviously different capacities) as the missing partition.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI use a lot of different usb hard drives in my shop. I have two basic enclosures, a generic one that uses pata drives on a usb 2.0 cable and an Apricon USB SATA 2.0 adapter.Suddenly when I plug in a new drive device manager does see the drive and installs it in device manager. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it has no drive letter assigned, and therefore doesn't show up in Computer. I can easily just assign a letter in Disk Management and the drive immediately becomes usable. However, I would like to get Windows 7 to resume automatically assigning a drive letter.
I have tried a program called USB DriveCleanup. What it appears to have done is remove all installations of prior USB drives and when I plug in a drive that has been in the machine previously it then goes thru the install again. Yet still no drive letter. I think the program is doing what would manually be done by going into safe mode and cleaning out all the entries that build up there that don't appear in normal mode, then removes them. Basically it seems like a shortcut to manually doing it.
I also tried a registry fix that essentially asked me to delete the upper and lower filters. This seems similiar to fix for CD/DVD drives that no longer appear in Computer. This fix also didn't work.I tried removing and reinstalling the chipset drivers. Still no go.Running Windows 7 Pro SP1, H55 chipset.
I've taken a 1TB SATA HDD from a second computer which had Windows 7 OS on it. I have housed it in an external caddy to use as a backup drive for my primary computer. It comes up as two paritions G and H. I've formatted G to give me a 931Gb drive and I have a H drive with 99.9MB which is the System Reserved from the previous Windows 7 install.Can I format the System Reserved partition on the external drive and combine the two partitions to create one external backup HDD?? If I need software tools to do this are there any freeware tools that would do this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).
Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. I put a clean install of Win 7 onto my laptop and all was well. I went into disk management and shrunk my C: partition a bit to create a new partition.
Having done that, I now cannot boot up. It would seem that something I've done has caused the system reserved partition to become my C: drive and what was C: is now D:! Windows 7 attempts a repair when I boot up, but this fails due to a corrupt registry.
I've put the disk back in to see what that offers and it's here that I noticed that Windows is now on the D: drive. Opening a command prompt confirms how the drive letters have been reassigned.
I'm not 100% sure but assume that it's trying to boot from the system reserved partition and not liking it? I only just installed yesterday so don't mind doing a reinstall if that's the easiest fix, but just wonder if anyone knows what I can do to ensure this doesn't happen again? I presume my partitioning shenanigans are to blame somehow?
When originally installing Windows 7 Ultimate I noticed it created a 100mb system reserved partition. No probs.
Recently I turned on AHCI in my bios and attempted to do a clean install. This time WinPE did not create a reserved partition and despite creating an 80gb partition to install windows on it said “Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.”
Install refused to proceed any further, pointing me to some log files I could not find. I booted from my repair disk and tried to make the partition active, which was already marked as active and tried again. No luck.
I had deleted all partitions on the drive.
So I turned off AHCI and tried again. I missed the "press any key".. and system complained about a "Master boot record error".. I rebooted and tried to do install again. Same issue.
I was able to recover my system from an image I created earlier, but I sure would like to know why the reserved partition was not created, and why windows refused to install. Because I'm going to try again.
I have purchased a new HDD, one that is supposed to be much faster than my old one, which of course has not been formatted. I tried that drive with and without AHCI and had the sasme issues.
I created a new partition upon a brand new Win 7 install. I have a 750 gb HD. Out of the 750, I created a 100 gig partition for the OS (or so I thought). Windows installed just fine, however, My Computer only sees the 100 gig partition, where the windows was installed. I should roughly have 650 gigs left, on a different partition but it is nowhere to be found.
What are my options? This is my first Win 7 install. Do I need to reinstall from scratch? I remember with Win XP it was so easy to create partitions upon new installs.
I have a 500 GB Western Digital Hard Drive, I can't access one of its partitions, it says access denied, and I have the ownership and all security stuff is marked for my account and system. Still can't access it, while I can when I boot from my other hard drive which have windows XP.

I want to replace with a new hard drive but also want to keep the original recovery partition because there is some useful software that is included. Everything was fine, but when I cloned her 320 gb hard to the 750 gb drive, it partitioned the drive so that 320 was allocated to the active boot system and the other 400-some were unallocated.
