I created a 20gb partition on my external hard drive and no longer require the partition. It is currently unallocated space so I want to format it into NFTS. Using computer management the partition was selected and and I went through the steps to format but i keep on getting an error message saying there is not enough space on the disk to complete this operation.

I have a dual boot system with WinXP and Windows 7 on the same drive, partitioned out. I also have a second drive which contains most of my data files.
For some reason, Windows 7 isn't seeing my XP partition, however it has no problems seeing my data drive. XP can also successfully see the new Windows 7 partition when I boot into XP.
Is there a reason why Windows 7 can't see my XP partition? Is there a way to fix this? Doing a search on this was quite hard. I kept getting all sorts of irrelevant results (most about full missing hds which isn't my problem).

I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

In my Sister's laptop, running Windows 7 Ultimate x86, all of a sudden, while she was working on the computer, the "E drive" went missing which was a partition on the hard disk (I don't remember if it was a logical or primary partition). She tried restarting the system but to no avail. So, I told her to open the "Disk management" tool in Windows 7 to see if the partition is visible in there. I did this because sometimes, in my computer, my expansion drive wouldn't show but it would be visible in the disk management tool and all I had to do was to re-assign it a drive letter. But, in this case, it wasn't visible over there.
So, now I told her to download "Mini-Tool Partition manager Home edition" and install it on her laptop. On running it, it wouldn't show the partition either. It would just show "C:", "D", "System Reserved" and unallocated space. However, when I added up the size displayed by C:, D:, System Reserved and Unallocated, it doesn't add up to the actual hard disk size. It means the partition is somewhere there but not visible. Is it possible that the partition would show up correctly if the laptop is booted into the bootable image of Mini-Tool Partition Manager?

Since the time I have purchased my laptop, I have a single C Drive of 288GB (the specs say 320 GB). Now I'm planning to install Windows 8 beta (in future) on my system without losing my data. Will creating a partition of my disk I want to have two drives. One just for the OS and the other for my files, so that whenever I want to install a new version of Windows, I just need to format one drive without the loss of any data.

I just installed Win 7 on an old Compaq pc that had been running XP. The computer has two 160GB hard drives on it. When going through the installation process I formatted both drives and deleted any partitions that I found. There were more partitions than I expected but I deleted them all. Win 7 installed perfectly and is working fine except that the 2nd drive isn't showing up. After searching a bit online it seems a 100MB partition is created during installation. By deleting the partitions I may have caused the setup to use the entire 2nd drive for whatever is in that 100MB partition and now I can't access the drive from Windows.
Does any of this make sense? From what I have read it sounds like I may have to reinstall but I'd like a second opinion before I go do something like that.

I run the system recovery with the build in recovery partition from Sony but the installation cannot be completed due to the hard disk failure. I want to replace with a new hard drive but also want to keep the original recovery partition because there is some useful software that is included. I have a external adapter to connect my hard drive through USB to my computer and have a software to recover the data in the recovery partition.

I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional edition to merge two partitions and now my daughter's computer won't start.I installed a new 750 gb hard drive to replace her 320 gb drive. Everything was fine, but when I cloned her 320 gb hard to the 750 gb drive, it partitioned the drive so that 320 was allocated to the active boot system and the other 400-some were unallocated. I needed to merge both partitions so that all the space would be usable. This is how the drive was partitioned.B: System 199 MB --> C: Bootable Active 285 GB --> D: System Recovery 12 GB --> Unallocated 400 GB..MiniTool Partition Wizard will only allow you to merge two partitions that are next to each other, so in order to merge partition C with the unallocated partition I had to delete partition D.Everything was fine, but then MiniTool said it couldn't finish the merge process because partition C was in use. It told me to restart my computer to finish the merge process.I restarted the computer and now it won't boot. I download a Windows 7 64 bit recovery ISO and burned it to disk then popped it in the drive and restarted the computer but it still won't boot. I even went into BIOS settings and made sure that the CD/DVD drive is first in line in the boot order. It still won't boot. Not sure what to do from here. I'm a Mac user, my daughter has the Windows 7 computer, so I'm not exactly very well-versed in that operating system. Upgrading the hard drive on my Mac was very easy, no merging of partitions needed. How do I get my daughter's computer running and get the partitions merged?

When i first installed windows 7, everything was going great. until i restarted without the windows 7 disc in my drive... then it all went wrong.
I have three hard drives.
1) Windows Vista 32bit Ultimate
2) Windows 7 Ultimate RC 32bit (partitioned in half, primary and logical)
3) Storage of my junk
The second hard drive is 160gb, partitioned in half to make to 80GB's. They are all sata, along with my dvd drives.
When i turn my computer on with hard drive 1 set to boot first, it boots vista perfectly fine. (no option comes up to pick an operating system)
When i turn my computer on with hard drive 2 set to boot first, and i DONT have my windows 7 dvd in, it comes up with BOOTMGR IS MISSING...
When i turn my computer on with hard drive 2 set to boot first, and i DO have my windows 7 disc in, it works perfect.
Is there a way to not have to put the disc in to boot all the time?
And its also strange that i dont have an option to select which operating system to boot from... its either one or the other
I have tried unplugging seperate hard drives and nothing changes, and i have tried start up repair from the windows 7 disc - still nothing.
The second problem i have, is hard drive 3. it is recognised in vista, but whenever im using windows 7, it does not detect the drive. Any ideas why it appears in vista and not 7?
i tried unplugging and re-plugging when the computer is both on and off, and its ALWAYS detected in the bios, just not windows 7.

I bought new hp laptop.. it came with 500 GB harddisk, windows 7 home basic, I didn't get any windows cd apart from recovery in hard disk. My windows is installed in c: and that is the only drive that it have... now the situation..
1) I want to partition my harddisk without losing windows means I don't want to format C: drive
2) I also want to install linux in dual mode with windows..
Second question is related to first one because I don't need any method that may lead to situation like I can't install any other operating system.
