My friend told me to fix his laptop and when he brought it to me i did a diagnostic test for the Hard Drive and Memory. The memory came out successful but the hard drive did not. I was wondering if I could replace the hard drive with my suggestion link below. My only concern is that will the HD will fit. He said, he would like a little speed boost if possible so I'll be giving him a 7200rpm HD.

I just partitioned my external 3.0Tb hard drive using the device manager in Win 7. At first I had one partition of around 2.8Tb, I shrunk the existing partition to around 1.9Tb and then Windows created 3 partitions instead of 2. I ended up with 1 partition of 1.9Tb, 1 partition unallocated of around 100Gb and a 3rd partition of 746Gb unallocated. I was then able to create a simple volume on the 100Gb partition which left me with the 746Gb partition unallocated. When I try to format the 746Gb partition all the options are greyed out - I cannot create a simple volume or delete the partition. I also cannot extend my other 2 partitions to use the unallocated space. When I delete the 100Gb partition I can then extend the 1.9Tb partition and end up with a 2Tb partition and the remaining 746Gb unallocated. Is there any way to recover the 746Gb of unallocated space? Seems a waste to have a 3Tb drive that only has 2Tb of useable space.

I just installed Win 7 on an old Compaq pc that had been running XP. The computer has two 160GB hard drives on it. When going through the installation process I formatted both drives and deleted any partitions that I found. There were more partitions than I expected but I deleted them all. Win 7 installed perfectly and is working fine except that the 2nd drive isn't showing up. After searching a bit online it seems a 100MB partition is created during installation. By deleting the partitions I may have caused the setup to use the entire 2nd drive for whatever is in that 100MB partition and now I can't access the drive from Windows.
Does any of this make sense? From what I have read it sounds like I may have to reinstall but I'd like a second opinion before I go do something like that.

my computer is telling me that my spare harddrive has less memory than there should be. the hdd is an old 160gb drive, which in reality has 149gb. after filling up the drive with 70gb of backup, it shows that i have 35 gb left. so where did the other 45 gb go? i highlighted all the files with CRTL+A, but it still only showed 70gb.

When i first installed windows 7, everything was going great. until i restarted without the windows 7 disc in my drive... then it all went wrong.
I have three hard drives.
1) Windows Vista 32bit Ultimate
2) Windows 7 Ultimate RC 32bit (partitioned in half, primary and logical)
3) Storage of my junk
The second hard drive is 160gb, partitioned in half to make to 80GB's. They are all sata, along with my dvd drives.
When i turn my computer on with hard drive 1 set to boot first, it boots vista perfectly fine. (no option comes up to pick an operating system)
When i turn my computer on with hard drive 2 set to boot first, and i DONT have my windows 7 dvd in, it comes up with BOOTMGR IS MISSING...
When i turn my computer on with hard drive 2 set to boot first, and i DO have my windows 7 disc in, it works perfect.
Is there a way to not have to put the disc in to boot all the time?
And its also strange that i dont have an option to select which operating system to boot from... its either one or the other
I have tried unplugging seperate hard drives and nothing changes, and i have tried start up repair from the windows 7 disc - still nothing.
The second problem i have, is hard drive 3. it is recognised in vista, but whenever im using windows 7, it does not detect the drive. Any ideas why it appears in vista and not 7?
i tried unplugging and re-plugging when the computer is both on and off, and its ALWAYS detected in the bios, just not windows 7.

I am using windows 7 ultimate.Today I booted the computer and it went to a message that said preparing desktop. After windows loaded the normal software was present, but my customized links were gone and the default background was present. My files that were in my normal user folders were not present, but were later located in the users/username folder. I moved some of these folders to the desktop as that is where they had previously done. In the users folder there were 3 folders (public, my username and whatever the new default user was called). When I restarted the computer everything came back to normal, except the folders of files I had placed on the new desktop. I went into the user folder, but it only had my current user and the public folders. How do I recover the files from the desktop from the random corrupted profile that windows created which I can not manually log into? I searched for the files and the last record of them is linked to my user and says the shortcut is not valid.

Basically I put a new hard drive into my laptop and tried to install windows 7. It keeps saying bootmgr is missing, press ctrl + alt + del to restart. The OEM windows 7 disk is inside my cd-rom drive and I went to the bios and put the cd/dvd as first, and the hdd as second, pressed f10 (save and exit.) and still no luck.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right category for this thread, but it seems to be the one that closest fits my problem.
A bit of background detail to this story (which you may already know if you've seen my other threads):
I had my desktop PC running W7 fine despite some hitches with an old hard drive of mine. I was able to get hold of a slightly higher specced system recently (a pre-built Acer Aspire T650-8B7H, if that means anything to anyone which has a slightly faster processor, an apparently better motherboard, yada yada) and so transferred my 9800GTX+, RAM, PSU and hard drive in to the new PC.
However, obviously Windows 7 didn't like the significantly different hardware so I nuked the drive and went to reinstall Windows 7, only to find that the Windows 7 install disc refused to pick up my SATA drive (which I had Windows 7 installed on before) in the new PC. Conveniently at the same time my problematic hard drive completely died on me, so I shrugged it off as that being the problem. However...
I've just bought myself a 500GB Western Digital Caviar Black hard drive. It's very nice, and I had no problems partitioning it up and installing multiple linux distributions on multiple partitions. However, I stuck my Windows 7 install disc in to install it on the drive. I choose to make a custom installation and... nothing. The drive just doesn't show up. I'm told to load drivers, but since when do you need to install drivers for an internal hard drive?
I've had this problem before and thought it was a problem with the hard drive, but it shouldn't be happening to a brand new drive. The install disc picks up IDE drives just fine, but as of yet it hasn't found either of the SATA disks I've had in there.
Any ideas? I would put it down to a BIOS setting but I had no problems installing Linux on other partitions of the same drive.

In order to download the Diablo 3 Beta to my hard drive, I had to change its letter from B to E (D3 doesn't allow hard drives named A or B... sigh). When I finished downloading D3, I switched the name back to B, and now all of my desktop and start menu icons have been replaced with the white icon you get when the path is unknown (yet all of the shortcuts still work when clicked on). When I would go into the properties menu, I tried to "change" the icons back to their normal ones, but it wouldn't work (changing them to any of the standard Windows icons worked, but trying to change them back to their default ones wouldn't go). Any thoughts? It's really frustrating.

A folder has disappeared from an external hard drive, as confirmed by plugging it into another computer and checking, searching for several filenames it should contain on all possible drives (with hidden files shown), and searches with Recuva and testdisk of deleted files. There is no discrepancy between the size of the remaining folders and the reported size of the folder that contained it along with the remaining folders.
The drive in question is a 2TB WD Mybook external that may be showing its age- another folder had a cyclic redundancy check error, and the folder in question developed one several weeks later. I'm making plans to move my data off and have already duplicated the most important files on it.When the folder developed the CRC error mentioned in the previous paragraph, I ran scandisk. It was after running that utility that I found it had disappeared, so that is the most likely reason. However, the other folder remained (with error unfixed, eventually resolved by using testdisk to copy the folder to another drive.)

Had a dual-boot system (Win 7 on drive 1, XP on drive 2) installed. Got an NTLDR is missing error on the primary WD drive on which Win 7 was installed. XP wouldn't boot either because the MBR is on the primary drive. So, I had to reinstall XP and all the software on the 2nd drive and test in original and another computer. Worked fine. When plugged into the motherboard, the Win 7 eSATA drive is not recognized by either of the 2 computers in the BIOS. It won't boot and I can't even look at the drive to see the contents - it's a non-entity as far as Windows is concerned. I plugged it into a Mac with an external eSATA to USB adapter and the Mac saw the drive but said that it was unreadable and asked if I wanted to format the drive. Since I thought I might want to try to recover files, I didn't. Anyway to see the contents of this drive with Windows and recover them or does it seem to be dead from the description?

About 6 months ago I set up a new machine dual boot using GParted with the following configuration:
/dev/sda1 ntfs (Windows 7 system reserved) 100 MB
/dev/sda2 ntfs (Windows7 C: drive) 99 GB (includes 4 GB of preloaded page file space)
/dev/sda3 ntfs (Shared drive - Windows7 E: Drive / Ubuntu sda3) 801 GB
/dev/sda4 extended partition 32 GB
/dev/sda5 ext4 (Linux Root) 30 GB
/dev/sda6 linux-swap 2 GB
I set it up so that I could access my E: drive from either the windows or ubuntu operating system. It has worked perfectly so far (about 6 months). But, here is the problem:For some reason as the share drive (my E: drive / sda3) grows Windows thinks that the windows system drive (sda2/c:drive) is also growing. So that now I have a low storage warning stating that there is only 8.76 GB of free space left on my 99 GB C: drive. When, in reality, there should be about 77 GB of free space. I've made hidden files/folders viewable and downloaded treesizefree so I know what should be on the drive. The Treesizefree output shows the expected 22 GB of space but also shows only 9 GB of free space. So, the missing space is nearly exactly the size of my shared drive (sda3/E:drive). So somehow, I think the windows OS is double counting my shared E: drive against my C: drive.

I have a hard drive I want to backup to a 64gb flash drive and then restore it to another different hard drive than where it came from. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

I need a little help trying to diagnose my daughters computer problem while I'm deployed to Afghanistan. She just recently has windows 7 home premium 64 bit installed. It's been working great for over a month now, but yesterday she said she tried to install a game and she got an error saying she doesn't have enough memory.
I had her bring up the system box in control panel, and it showed her score of 5.2 but next to memory installed it was empty. now we know memory is installed because she's able to use the computer. I know for a fact there's 2 GB of memory. I'm sure it's just a windows thing, but I'm unfamiliar with windows 7.

So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?
