View 7 Replies View RelatedI had a bunch of zipped font folders on my computer the other day and was installing them without issue, but I clicked something, and they all instantly turned to PDFs. I deleted them all. But now, when I download fonts, my PC no longer recognizes the folders as zipped files containing fonts for me to extract. It gives me the option of opening it with Acrobat or Irfanview or it tells me to choose a default program. I lost my computer in a tornado storm and got a new one and need to have certain fonts installed for a book I'm working on.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOur Sony Vaio laptop has several user accounts on it. Today I got an older keyboard with a ps/2 connector at a garage sale and connected it to the vaio with a ps/2 to USB adaptor. It worked for a few minutes, then suddenly the (new) keyboard stopped being recognized. I unplugged the keyboard, and now the vaio laptop keyboard no longer works - it's not recognized. I tried the vaio keyboard troubleshooting software without success. The curious thing is that this problem only exists on this one user account. Other accounts on the vaio work fine and recognize the keyboard, so I've messed up only one account's settings somehow. Other than nuking that account (with lots of personal settings and customizing)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.
I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.
When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.
I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.
Why did my computer stop recognizing my printer. I cannot find my printer desk.

I have a toshiba satellite L750 running Windows 7 home premium, when trying to burn anything onto a blank disc I get as far as selecting my items and asking it to burn but it keeps telling me to insert a blank disc (which obviously I have). I have tried several different types of blank disc but it dosnt seem to recognise any of them.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I have an bit of an odd and I think unique problem (as many searches came up with no solutions). Simply put, my boot manager is missing, but only when my windows install disc is not in the disc drive. It started several months ago and I just left it be, let the disc it int he disc drive and it was not that big of a deal. But just did a clean install couple days ago I re-installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on my computer (using an upgrade disc if that makes a difference).I formatted the drive with what I guess is a quick format (the option the install disc gives you). I have tried doing a repair with the install disc but no problems are found every time I try.

At the same time, I started gettin a message that my antivirus key is not valid.
Antivirus no longer works. (Avast). Also at about the same time my email programme (Thunderbird) started telling me that it could not download any more messages as there was insufficient room. Even after deleting several messages, the same fault continues. It looks like scrap W7 and reinstall, unless anyone has a better idea.
I'm not a newbie when it comes to PCs either, I build my own and repair/troubleshoot others.
For some reason, my computer stopped reading DVDs in the drive. CDs load fine and I can burn to them. I checked the hardware properties and somehow Windows has decided to install a CDROM driver to the device, which is why I believe DVDs are no longer being read. I've tried going through and uninstalling the driver and getting rid of the registry keys assosicated in order for the correct driver to be installed, but Windows keeps installing incorrect ones. This just happened a few days ago, tried restoring Windows to a week ago and same problem exists. Less than a month ago I used it to install Diablo 3 so I know it works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive (External).I use it 99.9% of the time on my Windows 7 64bit computer to store pictures/videos and backup important files. It was working fine until I plugged it into a MACINTRASH to backup files from that computer. It was a simple copy and paste from the MACINTRASH to the External HDD.After copying the files from the MACINTRASH, I plugged it back into my PC.My PC no longer recognizes my external HDD. I unplugged the power, plugged it back in.Same with the USB cable. Rebooted. Then my computer wouldn't reboot and windows did its automatic self repair. Nothing.I unplugged EVERYTHING and left it that way for about 30 minutes. I plugged EVERYTHING back to my computer and turned it on.
Windows booted up fine. I plugged in the external HDD and windows had that little icon telling me it was installing drivers. I was excited to think that it finally would recognize my external HDD.Of course, it didn't work. The HDD does not show up in my computer. It does show up in Device Manager and Disk ManagementDevice MangerUnder Disk Drives it lists it only as "WD" My other drives it has a nice long name like "WD 7500AAK External USB Device" Under properties it tells me Volume information for the disk cannot be found. (The very first time I did that prior to the reboot it said there was 0MB of space on it). It claims the device is working properly Disk ManagementAt first this said that I must initialize my disk. Now it doesn't even show up anymore. I have no idea what to do anymore.

Both drives had Windows 7 installed and while staring up I had to select one to boot from. How do I remove my old hard drive so that it will automatically boot from the new one?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had a stock machine running windows 7. I built a computer for myself and I hardly use cds so when I needed to install windows 7 on the new computer I simply removed my cd drive from my old computer and put it in the new one. I assumed that since the os is installed to the hd that the computer would still run but it does not . I already installed windows 7 on the new computer but when I went to boot my old pc up it says no operating system. Do I just need to buy a new cd drive? Or do I need to buy another copy of windows?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently reorganized my computer and this included a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new disk. I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files. Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWell i did a slow format to install windows 7 again in the same Hard Disk, the surprise is when after do a new clean installation, when it finish and let you write your user name and the name of your computer it says: Now write your username (for example: Juan) Juan was the name of my old installation user, and i dont know why it can recognize it if its a clean installation.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Model VPCEC1M1E. The problems that I am having are: The ATI Display driver stops responding and the screen goes blank, Also the optical drive is no longer showing within windows, and it will no longer open. I have tried lots of different ATI display drivers for the laptop however none of these have worked I have also tried clean installs but this did not make any difference. I have had a look through Event viewer and one error that seems to be a cause for concern is:Event ID 13: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS.In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had my partitions over several drives set for many months. Suddenly on boot this morning, one of the partitions isn't recognized by Windows (7 64-bit). My partition software (EaseUS Partition Manager Pro) does "see" it and shows the correct division of used and unused space. This is an NTFS partition with 11.86 GB capacity and 2.50 GB used. The status is None and the type is logical. The error message box title is "Location is not available". The message is:H: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.I've had no activity in this partition for several days. The partitions on either side are fine (fingers crossed they stay that way!). They same the same characteristics (although obviously different capacities) as the missing partition.
