Windows 7 Reads A Windows XP Drive Then XP Won't Boot

May 2, 2012

I've been using my laptop with Windows 7 with an USB to SATA adapter to read files from an XP hard drive. When I put the drive back in the XP tower, XP will not boot anymore and gives me a 7B error. Does Windows 7 alter the files on the XP drive when it reads it?

USB Flash Drive Is No Longer Seen As A Drive Or In Disc Management

Sep 26, 2012

I know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.

I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.

When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.

I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.

Hard Drive No Longer Bootable Or Detectable By Windows 7

Jan 19, 2012

I'm running into issues recently with a number of Windows 7 pc's where the hard disk will no longer be accessible. If I use startup repair, it will fail and not detect the disk or not even reach the recovery options screen. If I plug the drive into another windows pc, it will want to initialize and format.I can plug the disk into a mac or linux and am able to read / write to the disk as normal. The only way i've overcome this so far is to reformat the drive.

CD Reads But Won't Play - Disappears

Feb 12, 2013

Dell 755 dual core 1.8, 3 gig ram. I installed Window 7 on the machine, updated the drivers for sound ect. The problems is the CD drive, it can see it read whats on the disk, when you try to open it, it disappears completely off the machine, it goes out of devise manager, reboot it comes back. If i try to play a music CD it loads the WMP and tries to play you can see it playing, the track bar moves but no sound comes. If I play the in-build music or play the video it plays and I hear the music. I've changed the drive letter as someone suggested still the same. At one point I had my 3g modem in that show up as the CD drive. It must a conflict somewhere, where I dont know. Set it to both 32 & 64 bit configurations its the same on both

Now I can no longer access my C drive, Get a message that the administrator (me) has banned me!

At the same time, I started gettin a message that my antivirus key is not valid.

Antivirus no longer works. (Avast). Also at about the same time my email programme (Thunderbird) started telling me that it could not download any more messages as there was insufficient room. Even after deleting several messages, the same fault continues. It looks like scrap W7 and reinstall, unless anyone has a better idea.

CD / DVD Drive No Longer Reading DVDs

Jun 4, 2012

I'm not a newbie when it comes to PCs either, I build my own and repair/troubleshoot others.

For some reason, my computer stopped reading DVDs in the drive. CDs load fine and I can burn to them. I checked the hardware properties and somehow Windows has decided to install a CDROM driver to the device, which is why I believe DVDs are no longer being read. I've tried going through and uninstalling the driver and getting rid of the registry keys assosicated in order for the correct driver to be installed, but Windows keeps installing incorrect ones. This just happened a few days ago, tried restoring Windows to a week ago and same problem exists. Less than a month ago I used it to install Diablo 3 so I know it works fine.

Hard Drive No Longer Shows Up In Computer?

Dec 7, 2011

I have a Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive (External).I use it 99.9% of the time on my Windows 7 64bit computer to store pictures/videos and backup important files. It was working fine until I plugged it into a MACINTRASH to backup files from that computer. It was a simple copy and paste from the MACINTRASH to the External HDD.After copying the files from the MACINTRASH, I plugged it back into my PC.My PC no longer recognizes my external HDD. I unplugged the power, plugged it back in.Same with the USB cable. Rebooted. Then my computer wouldn't reboot and windows did its automatic self repair. Nothing.I unplugged EVERYTHING and left it that way for about 30 minutes. I plugged EVERYTHING back to my computer and turned it on.

Windows booted up fine. I plugged in the external HDD and windows had that little icon telling me it was installing drivers. I was excited to think that it finally would recognize my external HDD.Of course, it didn't work. The HDD does not show up in my computer. It does show up in Device Manager and Disk ManagementDevice MangerUnder Disk Drives it lists it only as "WD" My other drives it has a nice long name like "WD 7500AAK External USB Device" Under properties it tells me Volume information for the disk cannot be found. (The very first time I did that prior to the reboot it said there was 0MB of space on it). It claims the device is working properly Disk ManagementAt first this said that I must initialize my disk. Now it doesn't even show up anymore. I have no idea what to do anymore.

Unable To Delete System Folders From A Drive No Longer Being Used As A System Drive

Mar 21, 2012

I recently reorganized my computer and this included a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new disk. I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files. Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.

Optical Drive No Longer Showing Up And Drivers Crashing?

Jun 17, 2011

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Model VPCEC1M1E. The problems that I am having are: The ATI Display driver stops responding and the screen goes blank, Also the optical drive is no longer showing within windows, and it will no longer open. I have tried lots of different ATI display drivers for the laptop however none of these have worked I have also tried clean installs but this did not make any difference. I have had a look through Event viewer and one error that seems to be a cause for concern is:Event ID 13: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS.In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

Partition On Part Of Hard Drive No Longer Recognized?

I've had my partitions over several drives set for many months. Suddenly on boot this morning, one of the partitions isn't recognized by Windows (7 64-bit). My partition software (EaseUS Partition Manager Pro) does "see" it and shows the correct division of used and unused space. This is an NTFS partition with 11.86 GB capacity and 2.50 GB used. The status is None and the type is logical. The error message box title is "Location is not available". The message is:H: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.I've had no activity in this partition for several days. The partitions on either side are fine (fingers crossed they stay that way!). They same the same characteristics (although obviously different capacities) as the missing partition.
