View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7. I was installing i-tunes and when it asked to restart my computer I restarted it. When it logged back in the desktop was like in the beginning - the desktop theme was some default picture not the one I had put on, no additional programs were not installed and the worst part - my user folder on the desktop was completely empty! All of the folders My Music, My Pictures etc. had only Sample Pictures and Sample Music in them. I tried searching for my files but they cannot be found. Even worse - in My Computer the Local Disk is shown to be almost empty, like all of my files hadn't been there. So is there any way I can find and restore my files?
View 5 Replies View Relatedrecently I had a virus that was apparently unfixable so I reformatted the hard drive by using the factory image restore option. This however made the computer unuseable as it would not even turn on. I got Dell to send me the Windows Disk and the Drivers & Utilities Disk. I reinstalled windows and the computer worked fine again....although looked a little odd in the desktop/internet. I installed my game and tried playing it but it wouldn't let me play. It says I don't have the graphical requirements...which is odd because I played the game before the computer had to be reformatted. Even when I click on solitaire I get an error message that says: "Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on."
When I go to device manager and look at display adapters, the only thing that comes up is Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. I've tried downloading every driver from Dell and from the disc they gave me (they are the same files) I unzipped them to the location it wanted but it made no difference. Finally I sat in chat with dell support, whom I hate by the way, and he did all the same stuff I did before saying I needed to try reinstalling windows 7, but this time delete all the partitions, then reinstall the drivers. I did that...twice afterwards and nothing made a difference.
We have a script that installs an application on a user's box. It can run on XP, Vista, Win 7.... So it uses the ver command and find to figure out what the os is. It used to run on my win 7 box. It no longer does. The find command now gets an error. I tried substituting findstr and it returns a good completion code regardless! The grep command works great but most machines don't have grep so that is not an option to use. I would just like to figure out why find doesn't work. The date for find.exe in the System32 folder says 7/13/2009. Is there something I can do to restore find? Listed below is the the command & output that helps determine the OS version using find/findstr/grep

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus 1215n netbook. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. The drive came with the following partitions:
100 GB Windows 7
15 GB Asus Expressgate (a quick-boot minimal OS)
118 GB Empty partition
15 MB (unknown)
I had been using TrueCrypt to encrypt the 100 GB system partition, which required that I enter a password before booting into windows.Other than that I never touched it until now. Today I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate, so after making sure everything I wanted to keep was on the 118 GB partition, I booted into the Windows 7 setup, formatted *only the 100 GB partition* from within the setup, and selected it as the volume to which to install.Upon restarting, the third partition wasn't shown in My Computer. I went to Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management, which shows the following partitions:
100 GB Healthy
15 GB Healthy
118 GB Free space
20 MB Healthy
I've done these exact steps in the past with similar configurations, and have never had this happen to me before. I can only surmise that this is due to having had a TrueCrypt boot manager, but beyond that I am uncertain. how I might be able to recover this partition?
After a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, I used windows update to install all the updates available, and then after restarting I install the AMD graphics drivers. Upon rebooting, the system just hangs on the Windows Loading Logo.
What I have done so far:
I have tried the 11.10 and 11.11 drivers, same effect.I tried just using the driver only and the full catalyst package, both produce the same results.I have tried installing the drivers supplied by windows, but this process fails with an error code that suggests that I already have drivers in place. I have used driver sweeper in safe made to get rid of any video drivers before trying to reinstall, but the effect is the same. After every driver install, I must reboot into safe mood and restore to a previous point to be able to boot back into the full version of windows.
Previous History:This system was working fine with the 11.10 Catalyst package before reinstalling windows.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.
I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.
When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.
I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.

I believe this has something to do with the windows update I installed previously. I am not 100% sure I did install it before the errors started happening, but I am pretty sure. I have full administrative permissions. I was able to install a ".NET" frame work, however, it did not fix my problem.
I have had a BSOD lately that I cannot seem to figure out. It mostly happens when I play MP3 files using iTunes. They are stored on my network drive, and my other computers do not have this problem. Here is my system information.

Verify the items location and try again"I've tried placing the file they originally came from on my desktop, moving them to the recycling bin, placing them in a new folder, rebooting and nothing works. I keep getting the message above.

Antivirus no longer works. (Avast). Also at about the same time my email programme (Thunderbird) started telling me that it could not download any more messages as there was insufficient room. Even after deleting several messages, the same fault continues. It looks like scrap W7 and reinstall, unless anyone has a better idea.
I'm not a newbie when it comes to PCs either, I build my own and repair/troubleshoot others.
For some reason, my computer stopped reading DVDs in the drive. CDs load fine and I can burn to them. I checked the hardware properties and somehow Windows has decided to install a CDROM driver to the device, which is why I believe DVDs are no longer being read. I've tried going through and uninstalling the driver and getting rid of the registry keys assosicated in order for the correct driver to be installed, but Windows keeps installing incorrect ones. This just happened a few days ago, tried restoring Windows to a week ago and same problem exists. Less than a month ago I used it to install Diablo 3 so I know it works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use iTunes on my Windows 7 computer to sync with my iPhone, and the last time I went to open iTunes it gave me the error message "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes."I had heard that if I uninstalled Quicktime (which is bundled with iTunes when that is downloaded), then reinstalled it separately, it would work again, but after trying that it didn't. So I decided to just uninstall iTunes, then reinstall it. However, every time I try to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, it just sits there saying it'll be about eight more seconds to go to finish deleting, but it just sits, and sits, and sits...... Nothing. I also tried to just install the newest iTunes on top of the existing one, but every time I try it tells me that it's already installed and to click "Ok." So I can't uninstall it, nor can I install it, nor will iTunes open on its own. I had done a system restore recently, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive (External).I use it 99.9% of the time on my Windows 7 64bit computer to store pictures/videos and backup important files. It was working fine until I plugged it into a MACINTRASH to backup files from that computer. It was a simple copy and paste from the MACINTRASH to the External HDD.After copying the files from the MACINTRASH, I plugged it back into my PC.My PC no longer recognizes my external HDD. I unplugged the power, plugged it back in.Same with the USB cable. Rebooted. Then my computer wouldn't reboot and windows did its automatic self repair. Nothing.I unplugged EVERYTHING and left it that way for about 30 minutes. I plugged EVERYTHING back to my computer and turned it on.
Windows booted up fine. I plugged in the external HDD and windows had that little icon telling me it was installing drivers. I was excited to think that it finally would recognize my external HDD.Of course, it didn't work. The HDD does not show up in my computer. It does show up in Device Manager and Disk ManagementDevice MangerUnder Disk Drives it lists it only as "WD" My other drives it has a nice long name like "WD 7500AAK External USB Device" Under properties it tells me Volume information for the disk cannot be found. (The very first time I did that prior to the reboot it said there was 0MB of space on it). It claims the device is working properly Disk ManagementAt first this said that I must initialize my disk. Now it doesn't even show up anymore. I have no idea what to do anymore.
