I went to install the newest itunes last night, and during the instalation I got the message "error getting file security". I right clicked the installation file and ran as administrator, and have my UAC all the way down.

I believe this has something to do with the windows update I installed previously. I am not 100% sure I did install it before the errors started happening, but I am pretty sure. I have full administrative permissions. I was able to install a ".NET" frame work, however, it did not fix my problem.
As far as I know I have full administrative privileges and UAC is off. I am the sole user and this is the only account. I tried to install a new version of VMware Stand Alone Converter. I right clicked and ran as administrator. It asked about removing old version and I checked OK. It runs and pops up a box at end with this fault:

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. This is the first software I've ever had a problem with. Is this a Windows problem or a VMware problem? Does VMware Workstation need admin privileges even though it's a separate program?
When I try to download programs, they either stall at 1% or are extremely slow and estimate they will take days.

This is normally caused by a bad installation media or a corrupt installation file." What's wrong with this? I used internet download manager to download the file, although while I was downloading it, there was a blackout but when the electricity came back I quickly resumed downloading it.

Every time I download some software like Chrome, VLC, iTunes , it downloads fine, but when it has to install it gives strange errors. I have seen all kinds of errors.
E.g.: VLC gives NSIS error.
Microsoft Security Essentials gives "File Corrupt Error".
Got certificate invalid error for some other software. if I download zip files, they fail with CRC check.
Just to be sure it wasn't hardware issue, I installed vista as a second OS and that works fine. I am really uncertain what is causing the issue (seems network related though). I had an old router and just purchased a new linksys router. Other configurations are: Core 2 Quad, EVGA SLI ready motherboard, 4GB DDR2 ram, ASUS EN210 gphx card.
I have Windows 7. I was installing i-tunes and when it asked to restart my computer I restarted it. When it logged back in the desktop was like in the beginning - the desktop theme was some default picture not the one I had put on, no additional programs were not installed and the worst part - my user folder on the desktop was completely empty! All of the folders My Music, My Pictures etc. had only Sample Pictures and Sample Music in them. I tried searching for my files but they cannot be found. Even worse - in My Computer the Local Disk is shown to be almost empty, like all of my files hadn't been there. So is there any way I can find and restore my files?

Interestingly its occurence dimininished rapidly when I replaced MSE with Avast.Anyway - loaded up as normal and then got a pop up concerning Itunes. The pop up said "Itunes not installed correctly. Please Re-install. Error 7 (Win error 193).The screen then flashed up with lines down it (very quickly) then onto a blue screen with various data. Windows then reloaded and everything was fine.The latter part has happened once or twice before a while ago. I had Windows reinstalled less than a year ago. I have replaced my grpahics card in the summer.I'm just concerned that one day the pc won't work. I'm unemployed as use the PC daily to search and apply for jobs...so it would be sod's law if this went down.

After I removed an iPod from my laptop I never had installed before I got the BSOD after I restarted the computer. The message stated "Windows failed to start a recent hardware or software change may be the cause". I have tried startup repair from the OEM disc and have had no luck after 5 or more tries. I can boot into safe mode fine and connect to the internet. It will not start normally. The two options you get are start normally or launch startup repair and both of these fail when attempting. It always shows the error code 0x0000007e but some of the code in the parathensis change each time I boot the computer.
I am using windows 7. When load itunes 10.5 I receive message system has not been modified.

None had a satisfactory answer (besides the usual reinstall).Windows now fails to boot, after Win update automatically installed the update and insisting I restart. The update was Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.97.1113.0). Startup repair finds no problems. The BIOS recognizes the system drive and reports no errors.
I had done (before the update installed itself): repaired the "windows can't find the DVD drive" problem using the Microsoft "Fixit" for that problem it was successful). Also the external storage drive on a USB 3.0 controlled was dropped by the system at some point (hence my anxiety; all my backups, including a rather stale system drive image, are on that drive). I can access the Win 7 system drive with another OS on the machine (XP SP3).

I'm trying to figure out a few pieces of information about the status of my computer after a 2 week period of accidental read / write file sharing. Here's the list:
1. I want to figure out if there's a log function to show when Password Protected Sharing was enabled or disabled.
2. I need to know who on my network has accessed, modified, or viewed files on my pc (I wasn't running any log programs nor did I have auditing enabled on any folders).
3. I want to know if any files were created on my computer by other network users.
Backstory: A few months ago my old PC died and I bought a brand new one. I salvaged one of the hard drives from the old PC and put it into the new one, for the purpose of backing up the info and having a second hard drive. Some of the original folders were from a My Documents folder on a Win XP install, so transferring onto a Windows 7 Professional install was kind of a pain. After some messing around with the sharing settings and "admin access" type of settings in the permissions tab, I was able to back up my files. I guess during the above described process, I somehow ended up setting a few REALLY sensitive folders as "network shared", despite never using a network to transfer any of this. I guess I clicked something wrong under the permissions tab, or sharing tab or something. Anyway, this isn't a complete list, but I know these folders were shared:
C:\Windows (and all subfolders)
C:\Users (my documents, desktop, etc)
So. Back to my list of stuff I'm trying to figure out. Firstly, the Password Protection. It's possible that I disabled this in a misguided attempt at forcing the computer to stop prompting me for a login every time I moved a folder...but I don't remember turning it off. Is there a way to see if and when I had it off? Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but literally all of my paranoia and this entire problem would be a moot point if Password Protection HAD been enabled; Anyone would need a password to edit, create, or open files regardless of whether or not I had my files set to full read/write access, correct?
I would like to move MyDocuments folder from my C: Drive (an SSD) to my D: Drive. (C:UsersXXXXMy Documents)
I've seen the instructions: right click--Properties--Location--Move.
However, when I do this the security settings of the old folder do not copy over.
I would like the same settings to copy over. How do you do that?
I removed Security Shield 2012 from my laptop which has Windows 7. All went well until I got to Step 23 in Bleeping Computer website (.../virus-removal/remove-security-shield). I deleted the HOSTS file and downloaded Windows 7 HOSTS file. However, I can't save it in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS file. I unchecked the hide system protected files but still can't find it beyond "drivers."

When I look at the Download folder it shows an icon with correct title, but I can't see any files when I double click on it. This is not a "file folder" icon. I get an "Open file Security Warning" pop up. Shows run or cancel. Hit run it brings up "Win Zip Self Extractor" pop up. I have already supposedly unzipped this into the downloads. Please reinstall iTunes."I had heard that if I uninstalled Quicktime (which is bundled with iTunes when that is downloaded), then reinstalled it separately, it would work again, but after trying that it didn't. So I decided to just uninstall iTunes, then reinstall it. However, every time I try to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, it just sits there saying it'll be about eight more seconds to go to finish deleting, but it just sits, and sits, and sits...... Nothing. I also tried to just install the newest iTunes on top of the existing one, but every time I try it tells me that it's already installed and to click "Ok." So I can't uninstall it, nor can I install it, nor will iTunes open on its own. I had done a system restore recently, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

It's in C:GamesCiv IV, so I've tried changing the permissions of users to modify and write enabled. However I get the 'error applying security' message with no prompts as to how to solve the probem!
The interesting thing is it applies the changes anyway, even though it tells me I'm not allowed - security flaw!
