Accidental File Sharing Security Concerns?

May 19, 2012

I'm trying to figure out a few pieces of information about the status of my computer after a 2 week period of accidental read / write file sharing. Here's the list:

1. I want to figure out if there's a log function to show when Password Protected Sharing was enabled or disabled.

2. I need to know who on my network has accessed, modified, or viewed files on my pc (I wasn't running any log programs nor did I have auditing enabled on any folders).

3. I want to know if any files were created on my computer by other network users.

Backstory: A few months ago my old PC died and I bought a brand new one. I salvaged one of the hard drives from the old PC and put it into the new one, for the purpose of backing up the info and having a second hard drive. Some of the original folders were from a My Documents folder on a Win XP install, so transferring onto a Windows 7 Professional install was kind of a pain. After some messing around with the sharing settings and "admin access" type of settings in the permissions tab, I was able to back up my files. I guess during the above described process, I somehow ended up setting a few REALLY sensitive folders as "network shared", despite never using a network to transfer any of this. I guess I clicked something wrong under the permissions tab, or sharing tab or something. Anyway, this isn't a complete list, but I know these folders were shared:

C:\Windows (and all subfolders)
C:\Users (my documents, desktop, etc)

So. Back to my list of stuff I'm trying to figure out. Firstly, the Password Protection. It's possible that I disabled this in a misguided attempt at forcing the computer to stop prompting me for a login every time I moved a folder...but I don't remember turning it off. Is there a way to see if and when I had it off? Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but literally all of my paranoia and this entire problem would be a moot point if Password Protection HAD been enabled; Anyone would need a password to edit, create, or open files regardless of whether or not I had my files set to full read/write access, correct?

Drive Sharing And Security

Feb 23, 2010

I really need to know how to enable drive security and sharing option in win7 64bit.

I don't seem to find it, i have switched from xp recently and in xp I used to right clicked any drive (C or D) and selected sharing and security.. then I could set permissions for different users whether to access the particular drive (Read/Write access) like which user could access which hard disk drive and it kept privacy intact for me.

Now I need this in win7 is there anyone that could point me to the right direction how to get this done in win7?

P. S. I tried doing a system restore and my disks hang on 80% completion twice now.

Data Recovery After Accidental Delete?

Aug 13, 2012

My Packard-Bell iMedia D2525uk running 64 bit Win7 comes as standard with 2 partitions, the C and the Data D. However, by default all stuff created is saved in a series of Libraries which is on the C partition.Over the year or so I've owned the machine I've saved nearly all my stuff on the Data D partition, for obvious safety reasons! but noted that it seemed to be duplicated in the Libraries series of folders. In an attempt to prune the mass of duplicate folders I started backing them up and then deleting. However, I made a mistake and, being presented with a dialogue box giving me a choice whether to permanently delete a folder too big to go in the recycle bin, I did so. The folder was on the Data D partition so I thought it wouldn't affect the duplicate one in the Libraries series, but it did and now I've lost all my documents.

Can't Get File Sharing To Work

Sep 6, 2012

I've had Win7 64-bit Home Premium on this laptop for almost 3 years. I've had a second computer with Win7 32-bit Home Premium in the house networked for two years. Now I add a third, and I can't get file sharing to work. I can SEE files on that third computer from mine, but it won't let me move files to that computer from mine, and it won't let me save them! It says I don't have permission. My userID on this computer is "Katie" and that computer also has a user account called "Katie." The folders in question DO have sharing set (by right clicking on them) so that "Katie" has read/write permission. Why don't have have write permission, then?

File And Printer Sharing?

Dec 19, 2012

In my office there are 2 desktop (Windows 7 & XP) computers and 2 laptops (Windows 7 & XP). These computers are connected to BSNL wifi router (ADSL) which has intermittent internet connection. I have also installed 2 printers on the desktop computers, one being deskjet (Windows 7) and the other laser (XP comp). On the XP system (desktop) i've enabled printer sharing.

PS: desktop computers are connected by RJ-45 and laptops by WiFi Issue :

successfully configured other PC for printer sharing. Now the issue is as i said earlier due to intermittent internet connection remaining 3 computers are unable to print laser printer when the net is down however it works fine.

What can be done..?? Also on the XP sys (desktop) i would also like to enable a particular folder to be shared.

But when I go to copy a file from the XP computer to the Windows 7 computer I get the "Cannot Copy: Access is Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use" message. I can copy files from the Windows 7 computer to the XP computer.

What more do I need to do to create "Easy File Sharing" between my home networked computers?

Windows 7 File And Printer Sharing?

Jul 21, 2011

Okay I have two computers. They're both running win7 64bit home premium. The laptop seems fine and can file and printer share. So basically I'm trying to share my printer on my desktop pc connected through the usb as so I can print from my laptop. They seem to connect to each other and both are in the same homegroup. But I keep getting the can't connect to printer error. But it works if I do it the opposite way which is connect printer to laptop and network the printer through desktop. So it seems to be the settings or something on my desktop PC.The only folder I can access over the network on my desktop PC is the public folder. All the other folders say "access is denied". So there seems to be going on with my permissions, access, etc from my desktop PC. I already selected the folders I want to share and selected share with homegroup(read/write).

File-sharing From Windows To Linux?

Jan 6, 2012

i have a small web server running Fedora 15 and Apache, and I have a "pictures" folder on a windows machine that I have mounted from my /etc/fstab file, with "rw" access, however when I try to use a freeware PHP script in this particular folder, it doesn't display properly (won't show subfolders).I created a new folder directly on the linux machine, and the script works fine there.

Here's the setup:D:SharedPics - windows ntfs folder, shared as \winserverpics, and this share is mounted as /var/www/html/pics with RW access (although the username/pw I supply in .smbcreds file has "full" access.) PHP script does not work here. All linux permissions show rwxr-xr-x for files and folders, and owner is "root:root"I copied all of the files/subfolders from the "pics" folder into another folder, directly located at /var/www/html/pics1. file/folder permissions are exactly the same as the pics folder. PHP script works fine here.File and share permissions on the windows machine are set for read/write/modify for "Everyone", but it seems that the samba "service" is receiving different permissions. I've checked the smb.conf file and not been able to find anything that would cause "read only" permissions.

File Sharing Network Administrator

Jul 24, 2011

I'm trying to set up a file and sharing network between my PC's, 2 Win 7's and 1 Vista, and I'm having a bit of trouble. I followed all the steps in the tutorials across the web including this link, How To Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 and Vista - How-To Geek, and the closest I could get is the Vista accessing one of the 7's. All the PC's see each other, it's just when I try to access files over the network with the 7's I get a "You don't have permission to access...contact your network administrator" error. I'm the admin on both computers and I really can't get by this. It's so frustrating, I have been doing this for like 3 days already.Just a bit of info, I do have BitDefender 2011 on both the 7's and not the Vista. Although it might not make sense, I thought this might be the issue of why the Vista can access one of the 7's, I disabled the service through msconfig -> services and startup. Also disabled the firewall on all. It still didn't fix the problem.I actually figured it out. Although I enabled sharing with "everyone" and set permissions to full control, "everyone" was not showing up under group and users in the security tab. I just added that and voila.

Use Ethernet For Plain File Sharing And Not ICS?

Sep 3, 2009

i been using my router for network sharing but its limited to 100mbit, so i want to take advantage of my giglan's on either setups. i went and bought a cat5e crossover cable today, but i am doing my head in trying to get the setup working.

network & sharing centre shows the internet connection on port 1 (modem router) with home group joined but port 2 (crossover cable) is showing up as unidentified network.

i only want the crossover cable to share the network not the internet, so no ICS. just plain old file transferring is what im after but with gigalan speeds. im running x64 7600 on both pc's, my main rig is in my specs and the other is my spare parts (e8400,xfx 790i ultra ect) that i whacked together as a HTPC.

so is there a way to use ethernet for plain file sharing and not ICS?

p.s. sorry if this has been posted b4 but my bandwidth is over and am down to 7kbps so its very painful loading a single webpage.

File Sharing Sometimes Asks For Password

Jul 28, 2012

I have two Win 7 64bit computers, one Home Premium the other Professional, and seemingly at random when trying to access one or the other over the network it will ask for a username/password. Sometimes it won't ask for one at all, and I'll be able to see shares without problem, but I can't replicate when this does/doesn't happen. I've read as many threads as I can find on this and other forums, but still no luck.I have no 3rd party firewall and I've disabled Windows Firewall on both computers.I've disabled anti virus software (MSE only) on both computers. In advanced sharing, I've turned password protected sharing off (as well as tried almost every other combination of settings on this page)I've verified that both computers are in the same workgroup, and I am NOT using homegroup sharing.I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers for each network adapter.I've tried disabling IPv6 I've tried looking through the event viewer for any errors.I've tried 3 different routers?
