I have 2 external hard drives that work perfectly fine on my mac as well as other PCs. Jan 5, 2013First I want to say that the drive works without problems at the correct speed. The problems come upon disconnect. I also want to to stress that USB 2.0 discs are working flawlessly. If I use safe eject and the look in the device manager I get an error 47 saying that it has been shut down but not disconnected, it also says I can rectify it by disconnecting and reconnecting but this does not work. If I do so the drive will not be recognized. The enclosure has a power switch. After a safe eject I have tried both pulling the USB cable while power is still on and also going the other way by first shutting the power down. In both cases the error 47 shows in device manager. When this happens the CPU load goes up to about 20% and stays that way when it before was around 0 at idle. If I reboot the drive reconnects and I have no problem with it unless I try to safely eject it again.

Dec 15, 2011I've spent most of the night searching and cannot seem to find an answer to my problem.I have a NAS set up with two 2TB Samsung Spinpoint hard drives. The hard drives in the NAS were partitioned to have 300GB in a RAID 1 and the remainder in a RAID 0. One seemed to be failing so I removed it hoping I could connect it externally to my laptop and recover the data. When I hooked it up to the laptop, it seemed to connect fine but did not show in My Computer. When I went to Computer Management - Disk Management, it shows the partitions as healthy (see image - Disk 1). However, when I right click on the partitions to assign a drive letter, the only options available are Delete Volume and Help. Oct 6, 2011I was normally using my computer, when I suddenly noticed one of my hard drives disappeared from My Computer. Checked the Device Manager, I get the following. Trying to initialize it throws up this error: Seems to spin just fine. Trying different USB ports failed, switching cables as well. Already tried a few programs. GetDataBack for NTFS throws up error 1117. R-Studio also fails, as does DMDE and MTY. My friend even borrowed me Microsoft DaRT (part of MDOP), but when I boot into it, it doesn't recognize the HDD at all, no matter how hard I try. Only my Windows 7 installation does.Anything I can do in this situation? I had a lot of important data on it, and it's not completely dead yet. Sep 8, 2012I have a LaCie external hard drive which works fine on other pc's running Windows 7 Ultimate, but on this one it is an "unknown device". I have tried it in different ports but with the same result. I've checked with Windows Compatability and the exact model is listed there as being compatible. I've been to the manufacturer's website but there are no drivers available.I have the same problem with any USB device I plug into any port. I have tried a complete Windows re-install from a different CD but it made no difference.The only USB devices that work are the keyboard and mouse.I have given the LaCie HD as an example because I am hoping that if I can get a specific device to work, I may be able to solve the problem with others.

Dec 11, 2012I have a 3 Tera HDD. (WD My Book Essential (USB 3.0)). Last night I uninstalled a software which I do not remember its name by mistake. Apparently it was related to my WD hard drive for my computer does not recognize it anymore. I checked my device manager; "Base System Device" is not recognized. I ran windows troubleshooting. It says "Base System Device" Driver is not found. I searched a lot, but I couldn't find the driver. I also ran drive checker software.

I could not find this too. I also have another portable WD which is still recognized by my computer.
Computer Won't Recognize External Hard Drive?
Jul 22, 2011I'm having some trouble getting an external hard drive to be recognized by my computer. I have quite a few already, but I got another one because one of them won't read on my comp, although it will read on my netbook. The new drive I got has the same issue, no go on the comp, but works fine on the netbook.
I tried unplugging all of the other drives and even using the other cables to connect the new drive, but Windows 7 simply won't recognize it being plugged in. No "badump" sound and no icon in My Computer. Tried restarting, nothing. I tried it in all six of my computer's USB ports, but got no better result.

Mar 28, 2012my desktop computer won't boot. When I turn it on it displays the welcome splash screen and then goes black. A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. May 31, 2012Have recently purchased a small usb inspection snake camera with led light and when testing it plugged it into two desktops computers (one xp pro not sure of the other as it was a network work computer) It automatically loaded the drivers and brought up a screen automatically with the realtime image.(no driver disc came with it). However plugging into my windows 7 64bit sony laptop it signals a connection beep, loaded drivers automatically but wouldn't open or show up on my computer disc manager as an external usb source to click on. It does however show up on device manager as a usb camera and when I unplug and replug in it disappears and reappears so I know I have the right camera (not the lap top webcam inbuilt one that shows USB 2 Camera). Have tried updating drivers automatically and uninstalling it etc. Need it to work on the lap top so it can act as the movable screen for it?

Dec 28, 2012I have a hp pavillon dv-9000 running win 7 pro.......this laptop when give to me was in bad shape.... At one point i had the cd/dvd rom drive working yet in the middle of loading windows files it stoped working.... Knwoing the bios has only the driver for win vista i thought the driver for cd/dvd might not work.. So i droped win 7 on a usb flash drive..... The os is up n running.... So far no real troubles.. Ive had to jump around to find drivers for this..Any ways i still dont have a cd/dvd driver nor any place in the device manager to even update the driver..Gren ligh on cd/dvdrom door..... Oh and i have a replacement cd/dvdrom drive. That when i install i no longer have a green light on door it is red..... Funny thing is it dont show in my computer or device manager yet in the bois it is enable.. Yet dont read in boot list? Humm wait now my head forgot if it reads in boot list or not... Ill check it again to make sure im right... So thinking this over...

Jul 13, 2012For he past 3 days my Slimtype DVD player was not noticed by my laptop at all. Even worse, my device manager does not recognize the DVD drive even though the drive is in working order (i.e. it can still open and close). This drive has worked well enough for the past five years and has been working properly until I installed some updates from the Windows update center. But I don't which update(s) caused my DVD drive to disappear. So after numerous attempts to fix the problem through Microsoft's Fix It Service (Boo!) I decided to restore my computer to its factory settings (OS: Windows Vista 32-bit) hoping that would restore the functionality of my DVD Drive. Alas, that did not even work! The only remnant of my DVD's functionality with Windows a registry key :

External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed - Unable To Change Back?
Aug 21, 2012I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Nov 8, 2010I just got an external hard drive yesterday, and have been asking a few questions on this forum. So far, people have managed to be very helpful with the previous questions, hopefully someone can do so here too.Reinstalling all my games to external hard drive, need to know if they will / how to make them appear / function properly in my GEF, whether added automatically or manually.I am basically going to have EVERYTHING put onto my 1TB external, and by everything I mean "Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents, Games, and maybe Programs". So, I made a folder for each of those things on it,and only now that I am reinstalling my games into the Programs one have I realized something.I am a bit obsessive about having a fully functioning Game Explorer Folder (GEF) with all my games visible in it. It's my assumption that when I install into an external hard drive, none of those games will be automatically added into the GEF. However, if I add them in manually (using the regedit method in the tutorial), should everything function properly, so long as I have my external hard drive on whenever I use the computer?I just need this to be confirmed before I start reinstalling more. Also, if not, please let me know if there IS a way to get them to show up in my GEF properly, or possibly move the GEF to the external hard drive or get it to recognize things from a different directory.
