Cloning To Western Digital External Hard Drive
Jan 15, 2013i've been asked to set up 6 brand new Dell laptops bought for my software engineers in the industy - i have been given a 7th Dell laptop same as the other 6 which has had all the required software needed by our engineers for the machinery programing process installed on it - i've also been given a 1TB western Digital {USB connected} external hard drive for cloning the software and transfering it on to the other laptops, so this afternoon i cloned the 7th laptop with all the software on it using system back up - creating a system image file on the external hard drive, but when it came to transfering this image on to the other laptops, i thought i'd beable to restore {set up the C: drive} the new laptop from the file path E: {the external hard drive path} but it doesn't have the option {E: drive or USB input or external drive} only system restore/back up disk or network path, i can't use the network path as the company has access/permission,firewall blockers that basically stop our engineers laptops from working on customers sites when online, which kind of stops any work from happening, and is why the company.

Nov 23, 2012Just the other day my wife and I are watching several movies on my external hard drive, which has a plethora of movies we've gathered. It's not even that old, less than a year old.I have three computers in our house
-Windows 7 64bit Desktop (custom built)
-Windows 7 32bit laptop (Dell Vostro 1700)
-Windows 7 32bit Toshiba)
Not a single one of these computers even so much as detect the hard drive at all now. I tried a different usb cable as well, and i got nothing. I tried different wall outlets, it still blinks when I plug it in the computer, but the computer doesn't remotely see it.I first noticed a problem when I tried to download a new movie using utorrent. It started the file, and then failed saying something was wrong with like cyncro or something. Whatever, I looked up the error code. Appears others have had this issue as well, so I did what they said, "chkdsk /r" on my hard drive (J:/). It got to step five, but froze there...got nothing, for over 6 hours it sat there and not a thing at all.So I cancelled it, closed it out, and restarted the computer with the device plugged in.it reboots, and now...absolutely nothing. It doesn't even see that a drive exists.like I said, I've changed out the cables, moved power outlets, tried different computers and different ports, and done these steps on each of them:
1. Checked device manager...doesn't even show it on any of the computers.
2. Checked printers and devices..not even a hint.
3. Checked hidden devices on device manager...not even there.
I just recently had another issue. I was trying to get my ALFA AWSU036NHR wifi modem to work, but it wouldn't work. The difference was, I could see the device, the driver just didn't work. I fixed it by finding the driver (which was ridiculously hard to do until I start looking outside of the Alfa network of drivers and looked towards realtech. I downloaded a torrent of driver packs for windows 7 32 and 64.

May 30, 2009I plug in a Western Digital external USB 2.0 drive (Usually sold at Costco) Don't have the model but as soon as I plug it in, I got a blue screen of death! I thought that was the end of the blue screen. I believe this is normal since the pool of plug and play drivers it's probably not up to date with all the various divices out there. I have plug in my Kanguru drive and Kingston flash drive without any problems.

Feb 5, 2012So I bought a used 2 TB Hard drive and it supposedly was only used a couple of times and I got a good deal.I plugged it in and the software was installed successfully but it doesn't show up in the explorer with a drive letter. Now when I go to the device manager it does show up but I am not able to format it or give it a letter etc. Also like I said in the title it doesn't have a fat32 or NTFS File System.The hard drive I right clicked is the one I am talking about.

Dec 11, 2012I have a 3 Tera HDD. (WD My Book Essential (USB 3.0)). Last night I uninstalled a software which I do not remember its name by mistake. Apparently it was related to my WD hard drive for my computer does not recognize it anymore. I checked my device manager; "Base System Device" is not recognized. I ran windows troubleshooting. It says "Base System Device" Driver is not found. I searched a lot, but I couldn't find the driver. I also ran drive checker software.
It says:

I could not find this too. I also have another portable WD which is still recognized by my computer.
Can't Delete Folder On Western Digital External HDD?
Aug 6, 2012I use the program there came with the disk, WDSmartWare. It's OK, but i can't delete the backup. It sounds strange to delete a backup, but it's because it's an old backup from another computer.I've tried to delete the folder in Ubuntu which i've installed on a third-partition. It seems to work, but when i change to Windows there is a folder named .Trash-1000. I HAVE emptied the trash can in Ubuntu. If I rename the folder in Windows to f.x. "Delete me!", I can see it again in Ubuntu. Maybe I have to say that i've a bit problems when i have to remove the HDD from Ubuntu. It's says that there still is a process running, but the process doesn't stop. I've waited for an hour now. If I right click on the process and select "End task", Ubuntu works a few seconds and when it says "You can remove the movable disk now".

I started the Windows 7 Ultimate system. The computer screen remained on "Starting Windows" forever.If my memory serves me right, I remember I did manage to access it with another computer before. That computer has been out of service. At present I can access it while the drive is in the case connected with a USB cable. The Windows explorer shows all the partitions in the drive.

External Hard Drive Not Being Recognized?
Feb 26, 2011I've been using a 1TB iOmega external hard drive with my laptop for about a month and a few days ago it stopped working and isn't being recognised, the power light comes on when i connect the usb cable to the laptop but there is no noise from the hard drive at all and it doesn't show in disk management.
I took it into work with me and connected to my work PC (which runs XP) and it works fine, also tried it on another laptop which is running Vista and it doesn't work.
Laptop is an HP Pavilion DV6

The information on this is absolutely critical to me- I am a DJ and Producer and this particular drive contains all of my song stems, acapellas, instrumentals, sample kits, and also backups of every program I use (as well as my OS backup).
I just recently moved into a new apartment and my drive worked fine before the move 2 days ago. I do not think I bumped it or damaged it (seeing as how I always put them in safe places on the go) and it is now no longer working.
WD External Hard Drive Not Recognized
Nov 15, 2011I have a My Book Essential 1TB External. I'm on Windows 7 x64. After I updated I've been getting a lot of bugs and extreme lag. I would click on the drive in My Computer, enter my HD password and the drive would open up with all my folders, etc. But then when I wanted to drag folders from my External onto my PC hard drive it would freeze up and automatically quit? Windows would no longer show the External as attached to my computer. No matter how many times I click on the icon in the task bar for WD SmartWare, it will never come back up. I have to restart my PC everytime so I can renter the External. I then installed all WD software from the Control Panel, didn't change anything or help at all.I have no clue what to do or what has happened, but my External HD is pretty much useless right now. I have very important files on there, I need to get access to this immediately.
EDIT: Now my PC has trouble recognizing the External. I tried it on my Laptop also, it doesn't show anything. It shows up under disk management sometimes. For example it'll show up then simply disappear.
Finally after restarting my PC a bunch of times and switching USB ports back and forth, this CD DRIVE E: icon appeared for the WD UNLOCKER. Whenever I try and double click on it to open it up, the green bar appears to load as seen below, then the icon just disappears, it will not open anything. When the "CD Drive (E:) WD Unlocker appears like above, my external HD will briefly appear under DISK MANAGEMENT. It shows up then just goes away along with the E: drive icon. I don't know if the USB cable that connects the External to my PC is bad or not? My external was working an hour before all this happened, so I don't understand what is happening? Also, when I click on "Devices and Printers", an icon appears with "My Book 1130". This is what is shows.
My External does light up when plugged into my PC and turns off when removed. I can hear a ticking sound which sounds like the HD working? All these problems seemed to start after I updated to WD SmartWare 1.5.1.6. I even unistalled all the WD software. For some reason whenever I try to install "WDSmartWare_Software_Upgrader_for_Windows_1.5.1.6 " it just sits there and hangs, doesn't do anything.

Apr 14, 2010I have a toshiba external 200G hard drive. It was used on a Dell computer which ran Windows XP. I now have a new computer which runs windows 7. However when i connect the external hard drive to the new computer i start to experience problems with the files on there.
So there are a number of directories, my pics for example. When I click on it you can see the pics on some of the sub folders when you view via icons. Some you cannot see the pic, just shows a generic shot. When you try and open the pics / jpegs you get an error saying image not found, check 'full pathname / file' exists. The same is true for all files, docs etc
I have been able to load the same pics and docs via a cd, so it is a problem with my new pc recognising the hard drive as opposed to a problem with the files
External Hard Drive Not Seen Or Recognized?
Feb 21, 2012iomega ego 500 gb was working fine until today and now it won't recognize the drive at all. it recognizes the partitioned cd virtual drive in it, but not the larger storage drive. I plugged it into two different computers and it is recognized and i can drag and drop files. I also plugged in a usb flash drive into the same usb port and it works...so the usb drive works. I was told to assign the drive a letter in disk management, but it doesn't even show up there.
