I have a 2001 vintage Western Digital Passport external harddrive to which backup data from my recently defunct computer with XP operating system has been transfered.
Is there an uncomplicated way to transfer this data from the external harddrive to my new computer with Windows 7 operating system?
my laptop has gone out of order,however,I have got a new one and I want to transfer the data from the old one to te new one.Please note that the old one doesn't start up at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to this. I was working with Windows 7 32 bit and recently decided to take advantage of more RAM for recording music by upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit. However, after the upgrade installation my WD MyBook Studio II 2tb is no longer recognized in "My Computer" when I hook it through firewire OR USB (Yet all other devices work as they should) - So I've been to Disk Management and it shows up as a disk. However, there is still no letter assigned to it. When I right click on it, the only option is to delete volume. As you can see in this picture it shows up as disk 2 with three separate regions.
Now, when I hook it up to a MacBook running Leopard the WD MyBook Studio II works just fine and all of the files are accessible. I've also tried uninstalling the drivers, powering down and reconnecting, updating drivers. I've also switched my firewire controllers to (Legacy) in Device Manager. I still am not able to access my external drive within Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium - YET it worked great with 32 bit.
I can't remember if I disconnected the external drive from the computer when I upgraded Windows, but would that potentially have affected the install? How do I get access to my external drive if it won't show up in "My Computer" when it shows up perfectly fine on the MacBook running Leopard? Right now I'm using just less than half of the drive at around 800 GB and it's made up of two separate 1tb drives. I'm completely lost. Does anyone know a solution to my problem?Also: Windows lists my specific external drive as compatible with Windows 7 64 bit.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter having no success doing it manually, I have decided to purchase this program Paragon Migrate to help me move everything onto my shiny new SSD...Now my problem is that my Windows 7 Laptop will not recognise the SSD (I have it plugged into an external enclosure). Very strange as I can access it perfectly fine from my old Win XP machine upstairs..Question being - Is there a reason that windows 7 won't recognise this drive? and what can I do to solve the problem? I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS 8000 with a quad core, 8 gig ram, 7 pro, 6gb hdd and 6gb controller. I've tried SSD's that were 6gb and still having issues with slow performance. My main program is Arcview Mapping. I"ve tweaked the cache, I've put the Win swapfile on a second 6gb drive, tried 'no swapfile' so it all runs in ram, just about everything I can think of. We have gigabit nic, switch to switch, etc. It uses a lot of updates to the screen straight from internet, but local files should load faster. I have a copy on my local 6gb drive then sync to server at eod trying to r/o net latency. Majority of work is to/from local drive, but still can't wring out more speed. When I open Arcview, it takes 1.5 minutes to get to a workable screen. File size I'm loading doesn't make a diff.

problem either stopped on the usb data transfer from windows 7 PC to a usb HDD or flash drive; or crashed and give errors. However, i dont encount this sreious problem but rather annoying problem.
As soon as i use my Windows 7 PC to copy a file to usb stick, the process is all ok, but when i read the file, it seems to be corrupted, example, if i have put a avi file in the usb drive, it will play as skipped.
I have updated the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972 but still doesnt fix my problem. I have updated the chipset driver from nvidia web site, still no help.
I know for sure that problem occured after i fresh installed to windows 7 from xp pro. I have also tried to uninstall the usb root hub but still give me the same driver as it was.

View 5 Replies View Relatedinstalled a 60GB SSD a couple of years ago when they were quite expensive. I planned to use it solely for the operating system (Windows 7 Ultimate x 64). However over the years, it has become full to overflowing. I would like to clean it up and return it to the operating system only. Unfortunately I do not have the original disks or access to the installation programs for most of the information on the SSD. I have two other hard drives in the system - a 500GB Velociraptor that I originally wanted to hold all the programs and a 1000GB for the data. Can anyone tell me the best way to transfer the data off the SSD without screwing up my system?
