I'm new to this. I was working with Windows 7 32 bit and recently decided to take advantage of more RAM for recording music by upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit. However, after the upgrade installation my WD MyBook Studio II 2tb is no longer recognized in "My Computer" when I hook it through firewire OR USB (Yet all other devices work as they should) - So I've been to Disk Management and it shows up as a disk. However, there is still no letter assigned to it. When I right click on it, the only option is to delete volume. As you can see in this picture it shows up as disk 2 with three separate regions.
Now, when I hook it up to a MacBook running Leopard the WD MyBook Studio II works just fine and all of the files are accessible. I've also tried uninstalling the drivers, powering down and reconnecting, updating drivers. I've also switched my firewire controllers to (Legacy) in Device Manager. I still am not able to access my external drive within Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium - YET it worked great with 32 bit.
I can't remember if I disconnected the external drive from the computer when I upgraded Windows, but would that potentially have affected the install? How do I get access to my external drive if it won't show up in "My Computer" when it shows up perfectly fine on the MacBook running Leopard? Right now I'm using just less than half of the drive at around 800 GB and it's made up of two separate 1tb drives. I'm completely lost. Does anyone know a solution to my problem? Also: Windows lists my specific external drive as compatible with Windows 7 64 bit.
I have a 2001 vintage Western Digital Passport external harddrive to which backup data from my recently defunct computer with XP operating system has been transfered.
Is there an uncomplicated way to transfer this data from the external harddrive to my new computer with Windows 7 operating system?
After having no success doing it manually, I have decided to purchase this program Paragon Migrate to help me move everything onto my shiny new SSD...Now my problem is that my Windows 7 Laptop will not recognise the SSD (I have it plugged into an external enclosure). Very strange as I can access it perfectly fine from my old Win XP machine upstairs..Question being - Is there a reason that windows 7 won't recognise this drive? and what can I do to solve the problem? It's a pain in the ass because I thought that buying that software would be the end to my ongoing upgrade issues
I recently got a new laptop, a Dell Vostro 1520 with Windows 7. I'm in the process of transferring all my files from my old laptop to the new one and while setting up my Zune software I realized it wouldn't play any of my music that I keep in my external harddrive. I've tried to play my music on Windows Media Player as well and I'm having no luck there as well. Can anyone help me out?
I used a 2Tetrabyte HardDrive for 2 months as storage but sold it to my friend so he can use it as primary drive.I formatted it NTFS ( i think thats the spelling for it)I went over to his house to setup his Windows 7 on it and it wont install. Im booting from the windows 7 CD and tried all the options that it offers, spent hours.
I just purchased and intalled windows 7 home premium 64bit. I have a 250gig hard drive, which now shows only 32 gig of free space. I've done little more than reload some pictures and a few programs I used when I had the computer set up with XP. why my hard drive is nearly full or where I went wrong with the setup?
I am attempting to install Windows 7(32) onto my computer (currently running Windows Vista32). I have been unable to do so because the setup claims that I have no harddrives in which to install windows. It will not detect them during the installation process.
The compatibility check states that my computer is capable of running Windows 7(32) I am curious if there is anything I could do to get the installation to detect my harddrive.
My computer specs are:
Nvidia GTS 450 Intel Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz 4.00gb Ram Dell XPS720 PLDS DVD+RW DH-16A6S SCSI CdRom (driver up to date)
I attempted to format my C: as well, as per a friends suggestion, and was unable to do so recieving an error message stating "system partition is not allowed to be formatted" . I do not recall partitioning my system.
I have a W7 upgrade disk which I purchase when W7 was release and my l copy of Windows XP SP2. Is there any way I can just install W7 on a newly formatted harddrive.
Reason:
I have a trojan virus they cannot be deleted, it can only be quaranteen. Unfortunately while quaranteened, it still creates temp files...more than a 100. After trying numerous outlets: Symantec, my product is Syamantec Endpoint Protection., Mcafee on-line, Trend Micro House Call and Web Root Secure anywhere, I am afraid I will have to reformat the drive andi install from scratch.
I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit onto my blank harddrive via usb that was setup with the microsoft application for doing so.
It adds new windows files to about 80% then give me this error: Code: Windows cannot install required files. The file does not exist. Make sure all the files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002 Phenom x4 9850 6GB ram nvidia 9800gt seagate 7200rpm 750gig baracuda 460W PSU m2n78-la viola
I am going to build my own PC soon, but I'm going to keep my current hard drive and use it for my new PC. I have a 500GB external HD as backup, my question is could I install a copy of Windows 7, and use that to boot from with no hard drive in PCI want 2 PCs in my house one to use for stricly backup purposes. My plan is to put a wireless card in my old PC - share a folder - and constantly put files, videossongs, etc... into that folder so it gets backed up on the external HDMy next question is, if I am able to boot with the external HD, can I use the external HD on different PCs? Not to boot Windows - but just to recover files?
Trying to install wd 1600 external hd to windows 7. I have used it on xp for backup, formatted it and tried to install it. It appears in 'devices and printers', where it has been given a driver, but has no drive letter on the 'computer' page. The disk is spinning and the unit gave no trouble in the past.
I had Win 7 Home 64bit installed, but I've been having loads of issues with it, crashes, dvd drive not working properly, and a reallllllly long blank screen after "Starting Windows" Screen (around 2-3 minutes)After trying many, many different methods of fixing these issues, none of which did a darn thing.I decided that I just needed to reload windows.SO I reloaded windows from within the OS itself, (Not a Clean install) but that didn't fix my long boot problem. So I tried a clean install - I formatted the partition I wanted windows on (The same one it was on) and started the install only to get a screen that said I didn't have the proper driver for my DVD drive installed, WELL, it's an LG GH22LP20, and LG doesn't just give out drivers, NO they bundle them with Firmware so when I insert the DVD that came with the DVD Drive, it can't locate a driver for it! I looked online, I can't find anything except older Firmware/driver Software. So now, my only choice is to use my External USB Hard Drive, so I created an ISO of my Win 7 Install Disk using IMGBURN onto my exHDD, BUT Now I get an error saying NTLDR is missing.
I was wondering if it is possible to install windows 7 from an external hdd if i have the iso? i just recently built a new computer and i'm completely new to all this i have an asrock z68 ex3 and i havnt even turned it on so im wondering all that i would need to do to get this to work if it is at all possible
Would just like to know if its possible to install the Windows 7 OS on an external HDD and if so how do i do it? I have a Seagate 2TB Expansion desktop External HDD,which i have created 4 partitions, 3 of the 4 partitions are used up so i thought it be kinda cool to have an OS on the External. When i try installing straight onto the external disk, i get an error saying that windows cannot be installed on a USB drive or IEE 1394. Any ideas on how i can get the OS installed?
I only have an external firewire dvd drive and wondered if there's a way i can install Windows 7 from it. I don't want to overwrite my current XP installation and lose my programs and settings, so would like to install it onto a sepatate hard drive.
Here are steps on "How to Install your Windows7 onto your com without using any external device like OS DVD, Repair Disc, USB devices (External HDD, USB drive like flash drive/pen drive)Introduction:If tomorrow something goes wrong or an application screw up your system then what do you do??? Try to restore it but if you can't log into your OS through normal way or "last good configuration" doesn't work then what you might try Hitting/Pressing F8 & select Safe Mode to see if you can restore but still if issue not resolve then last resort re-install OS but if you don't have any of the above mentioned device then how to get OS installed again or let say you do have Recovery CD/DVD,external HDD but what if your ODD (DVD drive/Optical Disk Drive) not working & you don't have a USB on your old com then how to get this right without losing your Valuable data????Note: This will work if you have the Winodws7 setup folder copied onto your HDD. As i do, so, for me an external device is never required to do the re-installation of Windows 7 again. Also this has been tested & tried only on Windows 7 & not on any other version of Windows OS.

So far we've seen tutorials for installing Windows 7 in quite a few different ways. All of them require boot media like a DVD, USB key or a Network.

I am having difficulty getting my computer to install Windows 7 from an external hd. take a look through the steps I followed below, I believe I may have missed something very basic (I'm not a power user).
1.I put an iso image of windows 7, 32bit onto my computer
2.downloaded/installed 'easeUSpartition master'; used it to shink the partition w/with data on external hd, created a new partition of the free space remaining on the hd; set new partition as 'active'.
3.used magic iso to extract files from the iso image of windows 7 32 bit installer onto the active partition that was created from the free space on the external hd.
4.reset computer, on startup went into bios, set USB flash drive to #1 position of boot order, set setting to 'enable boot from external drive', saved and exited.
5.on subsequent restarts, the computer restarts as it normally does, I do not see any messages during startup (e.g. 'push any key to boot from external drive').
how can i install win7 or win xp on external hard drive for cary it with me and use it when i need it as another operating system in usb port in any computer?
Just got a new Asus Zenbook UX31E and am having a certain problem where if I plug my external drive (Samsung S2 1TB, USB 3.0, 2.5") into the 3.0 port windows tries to install a driver for the new device but fails. Now the drive powers on when connected but wont load up as an accessible drive and is not found is disc management.I've tried the HDD successfully in another laptop with USB 3.0 and it works fine on my Zenbook's USB 2.0 port so I'm guessing there's no problem with the HDD itself. Also I have tried a small flash drive in the Zenbook's 3.0 port which worked fine.I have tried updating the USB 3.0 driver to the latest version via Asus' driver database but have got the same result.I would of thought with such a prestigious laptop someone else would of run across this problem but all my googling has turned up ziltch.
How can I install Windows 7 on my external hard drive using Bootcamp on my Mac?Do not say it would be slow. I installed Mac OS X on it and it works just as fast as on my internal drive and there are no problems at all.
I have bought a SSD drive on which i want my OS & programs etc and my main drive now as just data. Now do i have to start again reinstall W7 and the whole sha-bang onto the new SSD-HD? Or is there a easy way around this?
