How can I install Windows 7 on my external hard drive using Bootcamp on my Mac?Do not say it would be slow. I installed Mac OS X on it and it works just as fast as on my internal drive and there are no problems at all.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (2.5 years old). All my data is backed up so I have no concerns about recoverying data.First, the laptop crashed and ran several chkdsk on start up. I froze several times during this. It said it had fixed some errors then started up again. This time it wanted to do start up repair. Same thing kept happening, froze at least twenty times during this. Eventually it gave me the blue screen of death.
'Technical information
*** STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA8004C1D260, 0xFFFFFA8004C1D498, 0xFFFFF8000130DDA0)'
This repeated several times. I ran the diagnostics and it told me the hard drive could not be found (error code 0146, 2000-0146). Essentially, it's a Dell laptop (I know) and I am not bothered about recovering the hard drive.I would, however, like to install Windows 7, or alternatively Linux, onto my external hard drive. But I just can't seem to get it to work.I have extracted a Linux iso to the external hard drive I want to install on, onto a cd, onto a FAT32 8gb usb stick, but it has given me the bootmgr is missing error every time. I have tried it with the interal HDD in and removed.I am no longer concerned about the internal HDD, i can use it for a door stop for all I am concerned, I just want to load ANY os onto my external hard drive so I can get the laptop working.

I have a 20GB laptop HDD in an enclosure at the moment. I want to copy the Windows 7 setup files from the extracted ISO to that drive for installation. I did this with XP by using the following:
Code: C:xp3I386winnt32.exe /syspart:E: /tempdrive:E: /makelocalsource /noreboot
For the XP install I hooked up the drive via a usb-to-ide interface to another laptop and then ran that line from a command prompt and stepped through copying the needed setup files to the drive.
From there I placed the HDD into the desired laptop (no working cd/dvd rom) and booted up into Windows setup. I do not believe this will work for 7 as there seems to be a directory structure difference to say the least. I wonder if that would still work had I the correct syntax though...
Is it possible to do this with Windows 7?
*The laptop is a DELL Inspiron 1100. The BIOS does not support booting from a USB device.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Why do files moved to an external drive not behave the same as those same files in an internal drive? I noticed that if I do anything to a file that is in an external drive, that file can not be saved under the same name (read only). In order to do so one must save it internally and then copy or move it to the external drive. So I did just that--I copied a file from taken from an external drive, saved it in the internal one and then copied it back to the external one. Now if I r-click the propeerties of these 2 same files and then go to the 'Security' tab a difference is immediately apparent: The internal one has -1- System & -2 My-computername (user-PCuser and -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) with all 3 accounts allowing all (full control, read, write, etc..). While the external drive has in Properties; -1- System -2- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) and -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) with this final 3d one (and different one) with no Allow for "full control, or modify or write. So how does one have all its files in this external drive behave and be equal to all the same files in the internal drive?Since -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) in the external drive is that which is differnt from the internal drive I was wondering if it is OK to delete this Permission or 'attribute' or whatever it is called and create instead one equal to the one in the internal drive -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators)? ANd of course doing so in one go and not file after file after file individually?

I am running Windows 7 Pro. Have a external dual dock connected to a estata port. One of the drives assigned letter K often comes up as E and I have to change as application is looking for K. Another disk in this dock works fine. No problems. why this might be happening or anyway to prevent? Seems like when I go to disk management and assign K it should stay that way.

i got a new processor, the o.c software and teh bios filed to set on auto, so i had to do it manually..over and over and over and over again. around 8 am i started to tweak the setting on the o.c software and in my slep deprived state i did something very stupid..i set the o.c software to load the last setting on startup.afterward i hit a setting the crashed the computer, so now i can't boot it, cuase the o.c software is loading those com crashing setting on startup. so i when to use a back up harddrive which was empty, so i am now using teh computer with a fresh hdd. the other hardrive is as it was when i screwed up royal.all ihave to do is load internal harddrive on my external hdd dock, in a virtualized environment which i looked for help threw google, which lead me to virtual box..which was 3 hours of wasted time, then i ran another search which lead me here eventaully, which referred me VMware, so i went to VMware only to find a god awful amount of crap i don't need and getting support from them was a joke, put in a ticket and await..wait..wait..wait, two hours later , i come back here. i had no idea what api from VMware to go and get most of it seems like its meant for servers, and im not running a server.i have a hdd thats good, in a external dock, i can load its internal working threw my computer, but i need it virtaulized in order to uncheck that box in the o.c software so it doesn't load on startup, thats it >.<

I am going to build my own PC soon, but I'm going to keep my current hard drive and use it for my new PC. I have a 500GB external HD as backup, my question is could I install a copy of Windows 7, and use that to boot from with no hard drive in PCI want 2 PCs in my house one to use for stricly backup purposes. My plan is to put a wireless card in my old PC - share a folder - and constantly put files, videossongs, etc... into that folder so it gets backed up on the external HDMy next question is, if I am able to boot with the external HD, can I use the external HD on different PCs? Not to boot Windows - but just to recover files?

I had Win 7 Home 64bit installed, but I've been having loads of issues with it, crashes, dvd drive not working properly, and a reallllllly long blank screen after "Starting Windows" Screen (around 2-3 minutes)After trying many, many different methods of fixing these issues, none of which did a darn thing.I decided that I just needed to reload windows.SO I reloaded windows from within the OS itself, (Not a Clean install) but that didn't fix my long boot problem. So I tried a clean install - I formatted the partition I wanted windows on (The same one it was on) and started the install only to get a screen that said I didn't have the proper driver for my DVD drive installed, WELL, it's an LG GH22LP20, and LG doesn't just give out drivers, NO they bundle them with Firmware so when I insert the DVD that came with the DVD Drive, it can't locate a driver for it! I looked online, I can't find anything except older Firmware/driver Software. So now, my only choice is to use my External USB Hard Drive, so I created an ISO of my Win 7 Install Disk using IMGBURN onto my exHDD, BUT Now I get an error saying NTLDR is missing.

My 1.5TB USB( using the EZ-dock adapter) drive is about full, and I'm looking at a 3GB drive to replace it. My system is a Netbook with USB 2.0 as the only external drive interface so that limits my options considerably if I want to keep it to something I can throw into my suitcase easily when travelling.

On Windows 7 Home Premium, I have three external HDD drives as well as the standard internal HDD, where the OS itself is installed. One of the externals is a WD MyBook, which reserves a partition as a system recovery disk for the MyBook. I never access that system recovery partition, which is assigned drive letter F:, and it's been fine for months. Now, suddenly Windows has decided it's a CD drive. When I boot the PC, an autoplay dialog comes up for this F: drive, asking to scan for and launch media files. In software like Power DVD, this F: drive is showing up as a removeable media source for files for Power DVD to play, and there seems to be some general conflict going on that I haven't quite pinned down yet -- for instance, if I'm playing a Blu-ray from my actual optical disk drive, and doing things with files on the G: drive, which is the actual data partition of this WD external HDD, sometimes the Blu-ray disc is suddenly and spontaneously ejected from the Blu-ray drive and the faux-CD drive tries to take over Power DVD and find files for it to play.I'm certain I don't have a virus or other malware. I've been through the system with my virus buster (Avira), with Malwarebytes, and with heavy-duty malware and rootkit detectors like Hitman Pro and TDSSKiller, and found nothing.I tried removing the two partitions of the WD drive completely from my Device Manager, rebooting the PC and letting them reinstall, but Windows just put the F: drive back as a CD drive.

I noticed that Windows 7 takes a bit longer to read my photo & video files specially those in my external hard drive. I have to wait for that green bar on top to completely fill-up before accessing my files. Usually takes about 2-3 minutes for each folder. My other laptop which runs on XP displays the files quickly.

I've got a XP Pro laptop I'm about to decommission but I've got programs I don't want to lose. I know there are programs that claim to be able to bring programs over from one machine to another but the results don't live up to the claims. I was wondering if I could take the hard drive out, place it in an enclosure and boot from it on my new Win7 Home Premium laptop when I want to use my existing XP programs. Alternately, I have my old laptop C drive backed up using Acronis. Could I "restore" it to a new partition on my Win 7 machine. I know that certain things like hardware drivers etc. won't work as it, but if the programs worked, that'd be fine with me. The rest could be worked on as needed.

Here are steps on "How to Install your Windows7 onto your com without using any external device like OS DVD, Repair Disc, USB devices (External HDD, USB drive like flash drive/pen drive)Introduction:If tomorrow something goes wrong or an application screw up your system then what do you do??? Try to restore it but if you can't log into your OS through normal way or "last good configuration" doesn't work then what you might try Hitting/Pressing F8 & select Safe Mode to see if you can restore but still if issue not resolve then last resort re-install OS but if you don't have any of the above mentioned device then how to get OS installed again or let say you do have Recovery CD/DVD,external HDD but what if your ODD (DVD drive/Optical Disk Drive) not working & you don't have a USB on your old com then how to get this right without losing your Valuable data????Note: This will work if you have the Winodws7 setup folder copied onto your HDD. As i do, so, for me an external device is never required to do the re-installation of Windows 7 again. Also this has been tested & tried only on Windows 7 & not on any other version of Windows OS.
Here's How:Step 1:Restart your com & keep hitting/pressing F8 to go to Advanced Boot Options screen. Now select click Safe Mode. Attachment 102982Step 2: log in now in your windows7 as an Admin but in Safe Mode ie minimum & essentials drivers will be installed. Attachment 102989Step 3:Go to ComputerC:Windows7setup & click Set Up file & Run As Administrator.Install windows 7 the way you always do; select the default drive for your Windows7 & follow the instruction to complete the installation.(here are screenshots of the step by step installation process involved)1. Go to ComputerC:Windows7setup & do a right click on Set Up file & Run As Administrator: Attachment 1032372. You get the Windows 7 installation window with edition name & its version: Attachment 1029953. Then next window is for "Install Windows" you can select the type of installation you want to do: Attachment 1029964. I selected "custom (advanced)" option & then you get "setup window" to enter your valid & authenticated "product key" to register your Windows version OS: Attachment 102998
