Install TO External Drive
I have a 20GB laptop HDD in an enclosure at the moment. I want to copy the Windows 7 setup files from the extracted ISO to that drive for installation. I did this with XP by using the following:
Code: C:xp3I386winnt32.exe /syspart:E: /tempdrive:E: /makelocalsource /noreboot
For the XP install I hooked up the drive via a usb-to-ide interface to another laptop and then ran that line from a command prompt and stepped through copying the needed setup files to the drive.
From there I placed the HDD into the desired laptop (no working cd/dvd rom) and booted up into Windows setup. I do not believe this will work for 7 as there seems to be a directory structure difference to say the least. I wonder if that would still work had I the correct syntax though...
Is it possible to do this with Windows 7?
*The laptop is a DELL Inspiron 1100. The BIOS does not support booting from a USB device.

Install On External Drive
I've decided to install Windows 7 on my PC, however I do not want to have to erase my current internal HD, thus I plan to install Windows 7 on my 320GB external drive and be able to choose at start up, which drive to use. Can I do this? If so, how?

Install 7 With External DVD Drive On Laptop
I only have a laptop with no CD/DVD media drive and only have an external DVD drive which connects with a USB. Is it possible to still install Microsoft 7 on my laptop? I would like to partition my drive and dual boot with my Vista, but was wondering whether it was possible to boot from my external drive through the USB.

Can I Install Win 7 Onto An External USB Hard Drive ?
i've seen other answers to the question and I did managed to use it successfully with Windows XP with an external USB HDD. I would not recommend it on a thumbdrive (flash memory) beccause the temp file usage will kill the drive in days or weeks. But the external HDD works great. I can't provide all the exact details on how to do it, so please don't ask, but here's an excellent reference as a starting point for you: http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=14181 The only thing you have to remember is that, in spite of dire warnings about how impossible it is, it actually can be done and works just great.

Unable To Install Win 7 On External Usb Hard Drive
Connected the external 160GB SATA hard drive using USB cable to Lenovo R61 laptop. Bootup the laptop with Windows 7 RC setup DVD disc. The Windows 7 installation recognised the external hard drive but when installing a the point to select the external hard drive as destination hard drive in custom setup, an error message prompted saying Windows 7 could not install on hard drive connected by usb. Inserted the external hard drive into the laptop and install Windows 7 without problem. Then took out the imaged hard drive and put it back into the external hard drive enclosure, connected back to the laptop and boot up from external hard drive. Got prompted to repair. After repair successful, Windows 7 kept reboot and prompted for repair. My questions are (1) any way to install Windows 7 to external hard drive connecting by usb? and (2) any way to rescue the image that already in the external hard drive so that it can bootup normally?

Copied Files From External Drive To Hard Drive Taking Up Twice Space
I just installed Windows 7 and I am in the process of copying backed up files (music, pics, docs) from my external back on to my hard drive. Before doing so, I deleted the Windows.old (although two file that seem to be written in hieroglyphics won't delete...any ideas?), cleaned the disk, and defragrmented. After copying about 83 gigs of data, I looked at my hard drive's free space and it seems to have taken up twice that. On another note, I noticed that the libraries by default put this data in two locations, my user profile and the public. Since I am the only one using this computer I find that annyoing and would like to delete public but it says I need administrative help (but I am the administrator...again, any ideas?). Anyway, I removed the public locations for music, pics, and docs but it still took up over 160 gigs. Any ideas?

External Hard Drive - Allocate A New Drive Letter
Windows 7 professional 64 bit system - upgraded from Vista Home a couple of months ago. I have two external drives - a relatively old 150Gb freecom and a 6 month old 1Tb Seagate - both of which worked fine with the old Vista Home setup, and initoially with Windows 7. A week or so before Christmas the Seagate kept 'disappearing'. It would be visible in Computer Management where it appeared to be 'running normally' but when I tried to copy to the drive it would get part way through copying then give message saying the item was 'no longer in that location'. rebooting sometimes 'brought it back' nut not always. Uninstalling and letting Windows find and install new drivers ditto. Cut a long story short - including reformatting the Seagate several times - fiddled around until it worked fine on my son in laws Windows 7 32 bit Home system - brought it back and it worked fine on mine for a few minutes - then began the same behaviour again - although I could open the files my son in law had copied onto the drive but initially occasionally not my own, until eventually it 'disappeared' again. So I kind of gave up and planned to return the Seagate under warranty and rely on the old Freecom box in the meantime. Unfortunately today the Freecom has started to do the same. I backed up a bunch of photos from my son's wedding with no problem, (as you can imagine the subject matter is quite important to me!) then when I tried to copy a slightly larger folder across (635 MB) I get the same message 'The item is no longer in this location'. Except it is. I can open the Freecom drive in Computer and open the files that did copy (about half the folder). I thought it might be a size issue so tried copying across in smaller sections - drag and drop worked once for four jpeg files at once but then the same problem. Reboot and all is well again - this time 'copy and paste' for four more files okay once then the same again! I did explore and for some reason the system was looking to read from or write to a different drive letter to the one it had allocated to the external drive. It appears as F: in Computer but when it failed it was looking for O: I'm stumped and frustrated - and now not convinced that there is any issue with the Seagate drive either. I've run scans with security software and no issues picked up on any drives. During the various reformats on the Seagate I opted for allocating a drive letter, not allocating a drive letter, let windows allocate ... etc and each time no difference to outcome, but I do wonder if the problem somehow relates to drive letter allocation. I have no problem (yet!) copying files to DVD so am currently laboriously backing up my back up onto DVDs! I'm no techie and would really appreciate some suggestions if anyone has any ideas or has heard of other instances where Windows seems to change drive letter allocation mid-session.

External Hard Drive (USB) Not Being Recognized As A Drive
I am having trouble with my external hard drive (USB) not being recognized as a drive. I have a Dell Dim 9200 which was running Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 and now my external hard drive is not recognized. It is a Venus DB3 enclosure with a WD 500 GB HD. Under Devices and Printers "Cypress AT2LP (3.03.0000.2)" shows as unspecified. Everytime I turn the HD on/off the computer recognizes that it was turned on.

In Disk Properties i have enable (Quick removal) Removal Policies option. 3. I did not set this drive as a Readyboost drive( ofcourse the second option wont allow it) 4. I have disabled system restore for this disk. 5. I have enabled "Do not move files to Recycle BIN" in recycle bin properties. 6. I dont have any windows media player services / library running on this drive. Pls let me know if i am missing any thing here. I have used this Drive in My Laptop with Vista HP and i was able to eject it easily. I managed to check Which applications is using the disk through the Resouce Monitor in taskmanager, which show all files are from disk C: and when i click eject my device immediately i see E: being used by SYSTEM for NTFS Logging , which dint happen before clicking ejecting.

External Hard Drive
I have had a problem with my external hard drive starting in Vista, and continuing in Windows 7. It is a SimpleTech Simple Drive, 120GB external hard drive. When ever I navigate, or in any way access certain folders on my extHDD, the drive begins to continuously be active, reading or what ever its doing, the activity light stays lit, and it freezes Windows Explorer and stays that way for litterally hours, non stop. I've read that it could be system restore, but its not enabled for that drive. I've read that it could be indexing, but when I open up that dialog box, it says indexing is complete. This has become VERY ANNOYING. I cannot access the files in certain folders untill it is done doing whatever it is doing. The only way I can regain control of the computer while this is happening is (because I have a laptop) close the lid, wait a few seconds untill the computer goes to sleep and unplug the extHDD. Does anyone know first what is causing this, and second what to do about it? I do have media files on the drive, and usually this happens when trying to access them, but its not like it does it the first time I try to access them and then its fine, it does it every time, ongoing. By the way, I dont know, but I doubt its a driver issue, it happened in Vista and I had all the Dell/Vista drivers installed... Also, can I install the same Vista drivers I was using in Vista, on Windows 7? I dont see any new drivers for Win7 on the Dell website yet.

External Hard Drive Problem
I was using Win XP on my Toshiba Satellite A215 S5818 until yesterday, now im using windows 7, so i insert my Transcend Storejet external hard drive, it was working perfectly like it used to. So i left my lap top running through the whole night because i was downloading something. I get up this morning and my disk isnt working. I was looking for a solution but no use, i tried to initialize the disk with disk management and i get the "incorrect function" error. I noticed that i have two drivers that are not installed, both of them are "base system device", i tried to upgrade them automaticly online but windows cant find the drivers. The thing is i have valuable stuff on the drive, so i just need the files, i can get rid of the drive right away with the guarantee and get a new one.

WMC 7 And An External Hard Drive
In order to make upgrading via a clean install easier -- and because I've been considering one for awhile anyway -- I'm looking at picking up a decent external hard drives right now... and can't seem to find a clear answer to something: Will I see any drop off in quality of playback or computer performance if I use a drive like this (external, USB) to store all of my recorded videos. The tuner and Media center would save everything directly to this drive and play everything directly from it. Would that cause any problems at all? I notice that it requires no power adapter since it's USB powered, and it has a Interface Transfer Rate of 480 Mbps -- not sure how either of these apply to my potential use of it.

Cannot Access External Drive And Data
The drive does not show up in "My Computer". It does show up in "Hardware Devices" and it shows as "working properly". However, I can not access the drive and see the data. Maxtor (Seagate now) says I need to reformat the drive (and lose the data). That does not make sense.

The drive is shown in "My Computer" but when you go to access the drive W7 says the drive is not formatted (it is formatted). If I "safely remove the hardware" then shut down the drive, then repower the drive, the drive becomes accessible.  This does not occur with W98, W2K, or Xp.

There's the option to install drivers for the external device, but WD says they don't have the drivers.......they should be included in Windows. Anyone else have this problem?P.S. The external drive works fine besides this.
