Map Network Drive Fails To Retain Password After Reboot

Dec 21, 2009

I have Win 7 ver 6.1 (build 7600) on Desktop and I have a Linux server. I don't use a password to logon to windows.

I successfully mapped Linux drives using my Linux user (which happens to be the same as the windows user) but on Linux I have a password. All the mappings were OK (4 directories) asking me on each one username + password + ticking the box called "retain credentials".

All went OK until I rebooted, then a message pop-up that "could not reconnect all network drives"...appeared: => the old stupid message from win XP.

Ok I opened My computer and surprise: My user and my password from the sharing pop-up window were gone! I've inserted them again and all went OK.

I thought they solved the old windows XP problem which clears the user + password from the Network drive mapping IF you do not have the SAME password as the mapped drives.

What can I do to retain that User+Password combination for good in Win 7 Mapping?

Swap Hard Drive On Identical PCs And Retain All Programs, And Settings

Jun 26, 2012

I currently have an HP Pavillion G70 that has some broken hardware (hinges for screen) but other wise works fine. It's running Windows 7, Ultimate - 32 bit.

I'd like to buy a used version of the same PC model and simply swap the hard drive from mine into the purchased PC.

Will this retain all the programs, settings and files? Or are there some things that are tied to the motherboard or other hardware devices.

Entered Wrong Password, Now Can't Map Network Drive

Dec 31, 2009

I have set up a Windows 7 machine that shares out a hard drive as a network share along with printers to our network. On another computer I was mapping the network drive and accidentally entered the wrong credentials (wrong user name) and choose the remember credentials setting, and it would not let me map the drive.

I tried to go back in and remap the drive again but Windows is remembering the user name/password and I can't map it. I can map the drive from any other computer just fine. Does anyone know how to make Windows forget the credentials so I can map the drive?

For whatever reason, This Windows 7 does not go back on earlier RESTORE points that I know I had set months ago....Is this a general problem with windows 7, or is there something that is not configured correctly, for Windows 7 to retain prior months restore points. What can I do to ensure restore points are created and kept for an extended period of time, given that I have plenty of Hard Disk space?

How To Get Window To Retain Set Position And Size

Oct 26, 2009

Something I like and can't seem to get Win 7 to do for me. I open a window for my computer, size it and set it at the upper left of my screen. I open folders in new windows; i.e. open the D: Drive and position it next to the window I opened for my computer. Close both. When I open my computer again it is now in the position where I opened the D: Drive. How do I get specific windows to retain the size and position I set each time I open them rather then simply pick up the size and position of the last window I opened?

Network Printer Test Page Fails

Sep 10, 2009

I tend to bring my personal laptop to work as I usually use it when working remotely.

I can find the printer and install it but I cannot print, even the test page fails.

I figured out that this is because my personal laptop is not on my company domain. However, like for any other shared resource such as a network drive or accessing our exchange server, I would expect to be asked for my credentials so that I can connect to the printer.

Cna this be done? Is there a way to print from my personal laptop to a network printer on a domain?

Enter Network Password But Password Was Never Set

Nov 19, 2009

I've always thought of networking as one of the black arts.

4 PCs - One Vista, 2 Windows 7 Home Premium, 1 Windows 7 Ultimate. All see each other. All have appropriate folders shared.

Try accessing A from B and I get "Enter Network Password (to connect to B)". I never set one up to start with, so why is it asking me for it. How do I access/change something I never set?

Try accessing B from A - I see the PC, and the folders I want but trying to access them results in "You do not have permissionto access folder names Contact your network administrator - who he? Obviously me but I don't know what the answer is!

Trying similar things with the other two PCs in the mix results in various permutations of the same problem.

I have tried all the various links suggested through Networking and Help, but most of the actions seem to be boxes to click to make the PCs try to sort themselves out. When it fails I can't find a manual way of trying to sort it out.

Any suitable tutorials that may help? Couldn't see any.

PC Unable To Identify Router / Network (wired) - DNS Server Address Ping Fails

Jul 9, 2012

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.

PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router

The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.

The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.

I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1

But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

No Internet.Network Access After Reboot?

I can be connected fine to my wireless network but if I perform a reboot the laptop 'connects' to the network however has no internet access (nor can I access the router via its ip address). The only way i can get it working again is delete the wireless adapter via the device manager, let windows re discover and install it, and all is fine again - nothing else is required. It continues to work fine until I shut down and reboot where it drops again (sleep modes or hibernation do not cause any problem).

Network Connectivity But No Internet After Reboot

Nov 25, 2009

I'm running 7 Home Premium 64bit on an HP box we got about a month ago.

Lately, when I restart the system, I can't get any internet connection. I can access shares on my home network, so the nic is working and I'm getting an ip address from my router. If I disable and reenable the nic, the internet connection works again. I've tried disabling firewalls and things like that, but the only thing that fixes it is the disable/enable.

The network "troubleshooter" can't see anything wrong, and everything looks like it's configured properly, and nothing has been changes since the initial setup. It worked fine for a couple weeks and now doesn't.

Anyone seen this before? Hints? The disable/enable isn't a big deal but I know at some point I won't be home and my wife will have a problem and I'd rather not deal with that!

Mirror Is Useless If First Drive Fails

Sep 10, 2009

So, I installed windows 7 ultimate with 2 drives. I'm running on a MB with an AHCI (ICH10R SATA controller - No extra drivers needed. Windows 7 sees the drives fine during install). It did the normal thing on 1 drive of making a system reserved partition with all the bootmgr and BCD stuff. I'm not able to mirror it. But, I was able to mirror the main installation partition.

Forward a few days - Drive 1 (the one with the "System" (BCD and bootmgr) and the main installlation) dies. Now I have another drive with just the main installation. Of course, I can't boot anymore.

OK, I think - I'll add the missing boot files to the still working drive. I boot the install CD, go into a CMD prompt. Break the mirror, and make the working partition standalone. I copy bootmgr onto the drive's root, create a "Boot" folder. A run diskpart and mark the partition as active. I run bootrec/rebuildbcd (which works and finds my installation), bootrec/fixmbr (also works) and bootrec/fixboot (also works). Great, so now I can boot?

Wrong. I just get a blinking cursor on trying to boot. I've run through the GUI repair, and still no go. I cannot figure out what's missing.

So, the bottom line is - If you're using a mirror thinking you're safe - Think again. Your data will be safe, but forget ever booting that installation again.

Installation Fails / Sata 2 Drive

Dec 7, 2009

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a WD 500gb freshly formatted to NTFS. Windows 7 first copies the files and then says its starting up and then hangs up. My bios see's the hard drive and knows it's there. I never get a chance to use F6 to load the Sata drivers that I have on a floppy drive.

It never asks me. I first tried to load with the Sata Drive unpartitioned but that failed. So I am now trying to do it on a formatted drive. I'm not sure if the problem is that Windows 7 doesn't recognize that I have a Sata Drive attached. Can anyone give me some ideas for things to try?

I took the motherboard, processor, and ram back to Frys and got store credit. I changed from a Gigabyte motherboard to an Asus motherboard, same processor, and associated ram. Windows 7 loaded with no problems.

Fry's stated that the motherboard must have been bad due to the issues that I was having. The processor and ram were suspected to be good. When I loaded Windows 7 I didn't have to load any Sata drivers the bios and windows 7 picked up the Sata Drive with no problems.

Network Places Remembering Old IP Settings After Reboot?

Nov 7, 2011

So, I have a class "A" IP Subnet in my home and a class "C" subnet. one is outside the "corporate" firewall and one is inside. My Laptop wireless always loves to obtain the 10.0.0.1 which is the ISA router/firewall. Obviously there is an IP conflict here because the TMG/ISA server/GATEWAY already has that..

This only happens after a reboot and the IP settings that it "desires" are the following:
IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

It should be....
IP: 10.0.0.101
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.1
DNS: 10.0.0.4 = MY DNS
DNS: 10.0.0.5 = MY DNS

Should I delete the network controller, or do I have to delve into the registry to get this crap sorted out? The Laptop ALWAYS connects to the N router but has a problem assigning the IP where it will just assign a bad IP or "first ip" in the sequence. There are times that I need to get beyond the firewall, and I need to assign it a class "c" but I don't understand why this should be having a bearing upon future connections. I have repeatedly reset the "arp" and DNS; to no avail.

I have typed this command at my last chance:
"netsh int ip reset c:
esetlog.txt"

Dvd Drive Fails To Read Or Write Under Windows 7

Dec 1, 2011

I have 2 drives (connected one at a time to try and sort this issue) SONY AD-7260S and a LITE-ON

Now from upgarding to XP to 7 I had no issues until now... When inserting Disc (Blank or Data Files) the DVD Drive will hang and not ask what to do with the Disk and when I try to Burn the disc it will say cannot write to drive or just sit there doing nothing

Both these drives worked flawlessly with XP and only way to get the drive to recognise half the time with Windows 7 is to restart PC to either get it to show in Device Manager or press eject when booting to get the disk inside out.

Both drives are Sata and are only a few months old (not burned much and work exceeelnet on another xp machine)

Update Fails After Hard Drive Replacement

Feb 12, 2012

My Dell 1525 Windows 7 laptop had begun to experience more and more frequent hard drive errors. So, in an effort to fend off total disaster, I purchased a new hard drive. The new drive was slightly larger than the old one (250GB vs 160GB). With a week old backup in hand, I used Acronis to do a disk CLONE to the new drive in an external enclosure. I was able to do it without any apparent drive errors. I then swapped drive for drive and rebooted. My most frequent apps worked fine, network access was fine, etc. Then I went to do a Windows Update - not fine. The little shield in the upper left corner of the box was red and, when I clicked on the "Check for Updates" box, it replied Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I went to Services, started the service, marked it Automatic, and tried again - no joy. So, as it suggested, I rebooted. No joy again. After trying a couple of different backup versions with the same result. I went back to square one and used the original Windows 7 install disk. The install went fine and I was able to use Windows Update successfully. I hoped that having verified that a vanilla Windows 7 worked, I might be lucky enough to just be able to restore my latest backup. Wrong. The system appears to work fine with the only KNOWN problem being Update - there may be other problems, as yet unknown. Differences I am aware of: new hardware partitions proportionally larger than the previous disk.

these drives did NOT come with any driver cd, nor is there a driver available on the HP support site. They must be plug&play.

Old PC New OS: Windows 7 Fails To Boot Using OEM DVD On Clean Hard Drive

Apr 6, 2012

I have a PC on which the hard drive died. I had previously done the Advisor and it said everything is OK for new install of Win 7 Home Premium.

I removed old hard drive and 2 gigs of memory (now 2 gigs installed) installed new hard drive, set appropriate ( i think) BIOS parms. When I start the DVD I get the 'loading files' message and the colorful logo then a blank screen with a large arrrow cursor -- and nothing. Wait 5, 10 15 minutes and the only hint of activity is the hard drive light is flickering about once every 2 seconds. I've now waited for over an hour and still nothing else.

I've tried to do all the things that have been suggested for others who have had problems but it hasn't helped. Machine is a Dell 4700C with 3.4 GHz processor , 2 gigs of memory, only keyboard, mouse, and monitor attached in addition to the hard drive.
