Possible To Install Old Hard Drive And Access All Programs And Files

Jul 7, 2011

So, I order a new custom computer and want to install my two old hardrives from my current computer. Both hardrives have lots of programs and info on them. The main on has windows 7 32 bit installed plus several programs. The new computer will have windows 7 64bit. Is it possible to install the old hard drive and access all the programs and files on it even though it has an operating system on it? Can I just transfer all those programs and files from the old one and reformat it to free space or is there a way to just remove the operation system and still access the the files and programs?

No Files Or Programs Showed On Hard Drive

May 26, 2011

When I turn it on windows starts fine but no programs show on the desktop or start menu. I originaly thought everything was gone but all of the virus protection loaded and seems to run fine, and I can run the programs that appear in the notifactation toolbar. When looking at C: it is empty, no folders, nothing! In the add/remove programs it shows everything is still installed. So i am making the assumption that all of the files and programs are still on the hard drive and intact. So at this point i am trying to figure out if this is a hard drive issue or most likely a windows problem.

Not Able To Access Files On Hard Drive

Aug 11, 2012

I can see a generic storage device listed under the universal serial bus controllers in the device manager and am able to see the 'safely remove hardware' icon in my tray. Unfortunately, the only thing that I see in disk management is an 'unknown' disk. The hard drive is listed by manufacturer in the device manager; however, I am not able to open it from this site. And, when I look at the items 'attached' to my computer, the drive is not visible.

Old Hard Drive In New Windows 7 Computer But Can't Access Files & Folders

I have an old hard drive with a ton of pictures and other irreplaceable files on it from a computer I had few years back. In case it makes any difference, the computer that hard drive originally was in ran Windows XP Pro.I recently got a new computer, with Windows 7 and had the hard drive put into this new computer, along with the hard drive that came in the computer.I can get to the drive itself, but when I try to access folders or files, either access is denied or folders which should contain more folders, are empty. I have tried changing the permission and ownership options on the drive, but no luck.

Boot Install Files From Hard Drive

Apr 28, 2011

I wish to have a method to install windows 7 (Or any OS for that matter) from a hard drive that contains just the installation files. I am aware of creating system images, ghosting and that whole scene but it's such a long winded process compared to just burning the CD again (Original is in storage and no I don't want to go get it ).

Pretty certain this can be done with some kind of DOS program that is loaded from the drive: When it is selected as primary boot. However, I have no experience with programming DOS applications, or if this is even possible (Pretty sure it is given DOS boot rom's exist).

Limit A Programs Access To Computer Files And Services

Jun 16, 2011

how to limit access for a program to my computer. I play World of Warcraft and I am concerned about hackers attempting to access my Outlook or other sensitive files on my computer. I also want to limit the programs access to only files within the folder it is located in. In other words, I don't want the game to be able to access my computer's services, files, etc other than the files contained within the World of Warcraft folder on my hard drive.

I am concerned that I could be hacked and an attempt was already made to change my WoW password. I noticed my outlook window flashes when WoW is running at the same time. I use an authenticator on my Wow account so my account was not compromised other than the inconvenience of having to reset my password from within the us.battle.net account management website.

I use Norton Security Suite and Malwarebytes anti malware protection programs but I would feel much more secure if I could limit Wow to only access the WoW folder on my PC.

Error 5: Access Is Denied When Try To Install Programs

Jan 30, 2010

My account is set up as an administrator, and I have always been able to do whatever I desired on my system. Now I can't install programs at all. Every one I try, I get an "access is denied" message. For example, when I try to (re)install winmail-reader-setup.exe, I get "Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied"What in the world have I done?! I have checked my account, folder privileges, etc, and nothing looks amiss except that I have two "unknown" user accounts that I haven't seen before...not sure how those got there. But I'm running with my own account, with full privileges, administrator access.

Allow Access To Save/edit Files In C Drive (System Drive)

Dec 18, 2009

I'm really hoping I find an answer to this question besides the one I've found on the internet a hundred times over (That's not a good idea, you shouldn't do it).

My question is: Is there a way to allow a user to create/edit files in the C drive (system drive), and in the Program Files contained there? Let's assume that this user is not only a local admin, but a domain admin as well.

The reason for this is I work for a company that does a lot of editing within these areas of Windows. We need to be able to create and edit files where they are stored. I know one way around we've found is to copy the item out of the folder, edit it, and put it back, but this is a pain in the butt.

I also know that most program need to "run as admin", so that's not the problem either. I've given this user every right and permission in the Security tab of the C drive, and had it propagate down through all files, folders, and sub-folders, and still I'm hit with an error that says "Access is Denied" or another one saying that I don't have the right privileges.

Please, if anyone knows how to change this in 7 it would be much appreciated. I know that this worked in XP, and I'm not looking for someone to tell me "this is a bad idea so don't do it", or "maybe it didn't work right in XP". I have seen enough of these.

UPDATE: I have been playing around with saving office and wordpad documents into the C drive, and into the Program files. It seems that I'm able to do both now (for some odd reason), but I still receive intermittent errors when trying to edit or copy/paste or cut/paste from one location to another.

Possible To Access Different Hard Drive

Jun 25, 2011

I was wondering if it was possible to access a different hard drive on a computer via the network option on windows? All the computers on my home network are windows 7 and i'm always accessing stuff from a desktop file on my main computer to my laptop or onto my flat mates laptop/computer. I'm upgrading to a solid state pretty soon and hoping to put windows on my SSD and have all my files i'm usually sharing on my 2nd hard drive due to not having much space on my SSD. Is there any way to access a hard drive on your network that doesnt have windows 7 on? So I can access my files on my second HDD on my PC from my laptop. Normally all I can see is "Jon-PC" and that accesses the C: windows drive

Can't Access 2nd Hard Drive

Sep 14, 2009

So I had windows XP installed and decided to upgrade to 7.

I moved all of my files onto HD2 which is just a 1TB storage device, formatted HD1 and installed 7.

Problem is, I can't access HD2 to get all of my files.

I can see it in the BIOS, as well as on the Device Manager but it doesn't show up in Disk Management to assign it a drive letter.

It is enabled in Device Manager, I tried updating the driver and uninstalling/reinstalling and nothing has worked so far.

I need to get the data off this so formatting isn't an option.

Hard-drives Apparently Corrupted After Attempted To Install A Second Hard Drive?

Oct 8, 2011

make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

Slow Hard Drive Access?

I just did a new build and i put my 2 storage drives from my old PC in it and installed windows on a new crucial M4 ssd. When i try to open the storage drives under my computer i sometimes get a green progress bar that takes a bit to load. I tried turning indexing off, setting folder type to general n so on and the problem still occurs. I also noticed with winamp that when i click on it and scroll down and it has to load the duration of the songs winamp becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. I use PS3 Media Server to watch my video files on my TV and it also is laggy compared to before. It takes a good 10 seconds to load the list of files and takes a while to load a file when before it was instant.

Faulty Ext. Hard Drive, No Access?

Dec 1, 2011

So, I recently picked up this external hard drive from a friend, who was having some issues with it. From his first description I thought I would be able to solve it myself, but i1-The Hard drive, is a standard external one connected to the PC via a standard USB cable ( One regular USB connector on the PC side and a small one, I believe they are refered to as 'mini-USB Type B' on the drive's side).2-When connected to the PC it shows up like an internal hard drive, strangely, not with the external devices.3-It cannot be browsed or accessed in any other way, the windows explorer will either, load -extremely- slowly, without success, OR freeze OR simply say it cannot be accessed.4-The furthest I got in terms of interacting with it, was to uninstall and reinstall it via disk manager.

5-All other attempts fail, formatting is impossible as a right click leads to the problems described in point 3. (I tried to format after uninstalling/installing the drive, since a message came up telling me to do so, eventhough I was planning to do it anyway)6-The drive brand is completely unknown to me, it was purchased in Hong Kong and bears the label 'Buffalo'.
