Error 5: Access Is Denied When Try To Install Programs

Jan 30, 2010

My account is set up as an administrator, and I have always been able to do whatever I desired on my system. Now I can't install programs at all. Every one I try, I get an "access is denied" message. For example, when I try to (re)install winmail-reader-setup.exe, I get "Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied"What in the world have I done?! I have checked my account, folder privileges, etc, and nothing looks amiss except that I have two "unknown" user accounts that I haven't seen before...not sure how those got there. But I'm running with my own account, with full privileges, administrator access.

Can't Uninstall ANY Programs, Error 5: Access Is Denied

Apr 12, 2012

I have just noticed that I can't uninstall any programs. When I try, a window pops up almost immediately saying "Unable to create a temporary file. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied.I have tried running the add/remove applet as Administrator but I get the same result. The Microsoft 'Fix It' tool finds no problems or errors.where the Windows Installer is trying to create the file. One thread that I've found says it creates it on 'the volume with the most free space', but as I only have one partition, that doesn't help much.

Print To File Error - Access Denied

Mar 22, 2012

I am running Windows 7 64 bit home. I have a program that does not give me a choice as to where it's printout goes. It just sends printout to the default printer. I want the output to go to a file. I used the printer setting feature to set up a FILE printer. As a printer choice I picked generic text and set it up as the default printer. When I send the printout from the program I am asked for a file name. I enter test.prn as the file name. Then I get an error message: Could not open the file. Access is denied.

Importing Pictures To NAS - Access Denied Error

Aug 28, 2012

I built a server using FreeNAS 8.2 to store family pictures, videos, music, and Windows backups. In my home we have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and Windows 7 Professional 64bit. The server is setup with 3 Windows (CIFS) Shares. One share for each of the two computers and then a common share for multimedia. The user accounts on the NAS belong to the common group "family." The Multimedia share has ownership (user:group) of root:family. The permissions on the directories in the Multimedia share are read/write/execute for owner, read/write/execute for group, and read/execute for everyone else (or 0775 in the *nix world).

Anyway, on my computer (Professional) and my wife's computer (Home Premium), I see the shares in Windows Explorer | Network. I am able to access the shares, and the first time I accessed, I was prompted to enter user credentials, which I did along with checking the box to have the credentials remembered. So, now, when I access the shares in Windows Explorer, I have immediate access. I can read, write, delete, whatever through Windows Explorer. On my computer, I was able to easily transfer my iTunes library to the Multimedia share through the iTunes application, and iTunes now sees all of my iTunes media from the NAS, rather than local.

On my wife's computer, I am having a problem with pictures. I was able to easily move all of the 4.8 GB of pictures from my wife's My Pictures directory over to a Pictures directory on the Multimedia share. I then went into Windows Live Photo Gallery and added the Pictures directory on the Multimedia share as part of the library. The pictures on the NAS show up just fine in the application. I then went to set the Multimedia share Pictures directory as the Default Save Location, and I received an error that stated that the directory could not be set as the Default Save Location as it was Read Only.

However, I had just transferred files to that directory. So, I copied over some other files just to make sure, and I had no problems reading, writing, deleting from the directory via Windows Explorer. If I set the Pictures directory on the Multimedia share as the target for importing pictures from the camera, I get an Access Denied error when trying to import. However, I can import the pictures to the local My Pictures directory and right after the import, I can use Windows Explorer to move the pictures over to the NAS without so much as a hiccup.

I have done some searching on the Internet, but thus far, I have not found anything that resolves this issue. I have tried using the Windows 7 Library Tool application to add the Pictures directory on the Multimedia share to the Windows 7 Pictures Library and to set that as the Default Save Location. This does set those values, and I can see all of the pictures on the NAS in the Windows Explorer Pictures Library. Also, Windows Live Photo Gallery now has the NAS share as the Default Save Location. However, I still get the "Access Denied" Error when trying to import pictures to that location.

I have also tried setting the permissions on the NAS Pictures directory to 0777 or read/write/execute for everyone, but that didn't work. Does Windows 7 utilize some other account that may not have access to the stored NAS credentials for accomplishing some aspect of the picture import process? I have used Task Manager to view the running applications with Windows Live Photo Gallery and the Camera Import application running, and I see my wife's user account listed for those processes.

Access To Partition Denied After Install

Sep 6, 2009

I installed windows 7, on the first boot I could access my D drive which is the drive that contains all media, files, resumes, etc etc etc. Windows 7 itself is on the C drive. I rebooted, and I open up 'computer' and now the D drive just says 'D: (Spare) NTFS' if I try to open or browse it says 'Access Denied' in a pop up window.

If I try to change the drive letter in disc management; 'Virtual Disk Manager: The parameter is incorrect'.

If I right click the drive and access security it says I don't have permission to view security and that I should try to take ownership. If I try to take ownership; 'access denied' Windows 7 literally stole all of my stuff. I suspect it's still in there but I cannot access it. The windows vista I installed on that drive as a work around incase I needed to grab drives and 7 couldn't get online, loads from that inaccessible drive, but cannot browse it. So i know it's intact and has the files on it.

Is there a way to brute force my way into it. it's my stuff and I want it.

I've been looking for how to fix this for around 16 hours now and have only found half tutorials and convoluted nonsense. how do i get access to my drive without formatting? I'm on the verge of turning into one of those people who just goes around spamming fbombs everywhere. I'm at my limit of sanity and patience with this. there was no reason for windows to lock it away from me in the first place.

Robocopy - Access Denied Error 5 Real Directory?

Jul 18, 2012

I know similar questions have been asked but I "might" have a unique one. What I have been trying to do is to copy the "C:Users", "C:Program Files", & "C:Program Files (x86)" to another clean hard drive "D:".I'm doing this to make more room for the OS in the C: drive while date will be in the D: drive. Now I have successfully robocopy Program Files & Program Files (x86). I also have copied most of the Users directory but for this stubborn Realupdate directory. This is I think the real player program. I get this Access Denied and "Error 5" error. I am in elevated command prompt. I achieved this via the Repair your computer prompt on the Windows install DVD.I also have rmdir for Program Files & Program Files and have made a mklink for both of them so windows knows where they will be. But I have not did a full boot because I don't think windows will access my Users directory because they have been moved over to the new drive. What I can only do will have to be via the command prompt.

I can't make a mklink for Users because I get an error saying something about duplicate areas? What I was trying to do is go to this Realupdate directory but even trying to access that directory via cd commands will not work, giving me a access denied. Again I am in elevated command prompt Administrator:X:windowssystem32cmd.exe How can I get to that directory. I just want to delete it now since I have all the files I need. I just want to create a junction point for Users directory linked to the D: drive. I used the following command: mklink "D:Users" C:Users" /JGrant it the D and C are turned around but in Windows Recovery Console it mixes up the drive letters but I know what is the source drive and destination drive. I verified this via the Volume Drive Titles.

Access Vista Shares From XP But Not From Windows 7 (access Denied)

Sep 20, 2011

I have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.

On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).

On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.

The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.

Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).
