Install From XP - Hard Drive Still Full

Completed an install from XP to 7 by copying the install disk to my lap top hard drive, then running "setup".

Thought that this would delete the all of the old files. And, indeed, when I search for known file names, the search comes up empty.

However, the properties of the disk show the same amount of disk space used as before the install.

How can I remove these "ghost" files?

Win 7 Report Hard Drive As Being 100% Full When It Is Only 25% Full
I have a primary 80GB HDD which is about has about 25GB of files on it. This includes hidden files (or at least all the hidden files it chooses to show).Windows is reporting the disk is 100 percent full, and when I select the properties for the HDD it shows as being 100 percent full. Why is this?

Could it be due to error reporting or maybe a virtual memory error? 50gb is a lot of disk space to lose.I have been running windows 7 since Sunday. Note that the only application I have been running has been Windows Media Center for Live TV. Also of note is that my TV recordings are set to record to secondary 500GB Drive.

Full Hard Drive Encryption
Can you recommend a Windows 7 compatible encryption program that will encrypt the whole hard drive? I checked the true-crypt website, but Windows 7 is not listed as supported yet. I'm currently using RC1 and when I get my RTM copies they will be Home Premium (so not Bitlocker).

Cannot Install To Unsupported Hard Drive
This is not Microsoft's problem. I have an unusual configuration and I thought I'd share the issue here.

My hard drives are connected to a controller card. When I went to install Windows 7 RC, it could not find the hard drives. Naturally, it asked for a driver. My research showed that Promise, the card's manufacturer, did not have a driver for Windows 7. Maybe they never will.

So, at least for now, I'll have to wait. Either Promise will come up with a driver, the final version of Windows 7 will have the driver, or I will replace my hardware (which is working fine for a "spare" computer).

Hard Drive Install Issue
Wanted to install Windows 7 Professional on a new 320GB hard drive. (Windows Vista was installed on an 80GB that was filled)

#1. Installed new drive in system – had to format in Windows Vista (Assigned drive letter B: because c: was already in use by old drive)

#2. Installed Windows 7 Pro on new 320GB B: drive

#3. Booted to windows 7 on new drive (had to select between Windows 7 or Windows Vista because both drives were installed)

#4. Copied user profiles from Windows Vista hard drive to Windows 7 hard drive.

Problems

#5. Windows search will not find anything in the users' documents folder, although everything is there. Document library will show when "arranged by folder" but if you change to "arrange by date modified" or anything else they all disappear. Also Windows file index will not index any files.

#6. Unhooked old hard drive, new hard drive will not boot by itself, says invalid system disk

Second Hard Drive Disappears After Install
I built a dual core / pentium with 2 gb of ram. Installed vista, and couldn't figure out why it wasn't finding my secondary hard dive. After a few months, I finally found that the key to solving the problem was by going into the ADNINISTRATIVE TOOLS and doing something. Now, whenever I install windows 7; I have the same problem. When I install windows 7; it asks me if I want to install it on disk 0 or disk 1.

So, windows 7 does find the second hard drive. But, after the install is complete, it only shows 1 hard drive. I'd like to do a fresh install of widows 7 rc 1, if anyone can help me out. I've found windows 7 to be faster and more stable than windows vista. I always backup my data files to my secondary hard drive, then do a clean installation of windows seven (even though it's only an RC 1 release). I don't dual boot or anything. any answers?

Install On An Unformatted Hard Drive
I have just finished building a new PC; i7-920, 6GB RAM, Asus P6Tse motherboard, Samsung DVD burner, WD Caviar Black 1TB hard drive and 4870 1GB video card.I am trying to install Windows 7 RC 64 bit version but am having constant 0xc00000e9 errors (kindly advising me that there is a problem with the USB, hard drive or CD drive without narrowing it down further).

I have disabled the USB ports, swapped out the hard drive with an unused IDE drive I had lying around and swapped the DVD burner with a DVD reader I also had available with absolutely no luck.Initially, while I had the USB enabled, I had a USB keyboard and mouse connected but they hung hard when the error popped up (even the three finger salute did nothing) and so I tried a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, which at least give me the next screen after the error.

That screen seems to allow me to retry the installation (with identical results) or to do a memory test, which it passed fine.I suspect from other comments that I need to reburn the DVD at a slower speed, so I'll try that.

However, I do not have an installable version of any other OS and so have not been able to partition, format or test the new hard drive. I assume that the installation will do that, but thought I should check in case some imbecile decided that this was not necessary.

New Hard Drive With New Win 7 Install
I want to replace my C drive with a new WD 640. Can I disconnect my existing C drive - 3 years of XP and 1000s of files; install new WD drive; format and do new install of W7. Question: when I reconnect old C drive, will W7 have access to all those old files? Seems like a simple way to clean install W7 - start with a NEW drive.

Hard Drive Failure After Fresh Install
I have just bought a brand new hard drive due to my last ones controller failed.

Western Digital Caviar Black 500gb

So the problem,

Did a fresh install of win 7 (Build 7229) two nights ago, all installed perfectly, next day (yesterday) went to boot up pc and had the dos error message - Disk boot failure, please insert system disk and press enter.

My first impression was it may have been an install failure, so i formatted the hard drive and reinstalled. shutdown the PC and rebooted up and i had the same error message, now after this, i got my failed hard drive out and after a lot of faffing around, BIOS found it and it gave me the same error message.

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be. I have tried Windows startup repair, did not fix.

BIOS settings are

First boot device is Hard drive

second boot device is CD-ROM

(I have even swapped these around to boot from windows 7 and it just starts the setup procedure of installing windows drivers) I have even set boot order of HDDs so my main windows HDD is up top. Anyone got any clues.

Install Issue - Hard Drive Not Detected
already posted about this issue in the Gigabyte section of the forums. Thought I'd post here for some more feedback, since the issue overlaps (admins please feel free to remove this thread if you think it's redundant).

Building my first computer, and I managed to get it running. I got the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit ISO off Digital River and made a bootable USB flash drive. Computer powered up, I set it to boot off the USB drive, and install process started. However, when it prompted me to choose which drive to install Windows to, my hard drive did not show up.

I rebooted, set the hard drive to AHCI in the BIOS (native IDE by default), and tried to install the drivers from the Gigabyte website off a flash drive, and still nothing. I also updated the BIOS and tried again in both IDE and AHCI, but still didn't work. I ordered a new hard drive and will try again later, but I'm doubting it's the hard drive (no signs of mechanical failure).

Ghost A Win7 Install To Separate Hard Drive
I'm in IT (surprise surprise) and I have extra hard drives coming out my ears. I want to move my Win RC x64 install to a larger hard drive.

Whats the easiest way to do this? I know its possible, I used to ghost XP machines at the local highschool (dont fret, they were all licensed).

I'm toying with the concept of making a fresh install, and doing something to the effect of a system restore to it, or something like that.

On a slightly less related note, my system is more powerful a machine than i ever expected to own two years ago. Its a core i7 machine with 12gb of ram and Windows 7 installed on a raptor. Why doesn't a fresh install of Windows 7 simply fly? Sure, multitasking can be done almost infinitely (lol), but there's literally no speed increase in app startup times, opening "my computer" or the device manager. None of it works as quickly or smoothly as i would have thought.

Also, again, where can i find a simple list of changes between RC and RTM?

RTM Install Fails - Can Not Format New Hard Drive
Windows 7 will not format a new hard drive if there is a second internal hard drive attached. The 2nd drive is a logical drive and both drives are displayed properly during the start of the Windows 7 install. XP has no problem with a new unformatted drive but 7 fails to create the small 100MB system partition.

In my case after some hair pulling I removed the second drive and then 7 could create both the 100MB system partition and the primary partition needed to install the OS. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Can I Install Win 7 Onto An External USB Hard Drive ?
i've seen other answers to the question and I did managed to use it successfully with Windows XP with an external USB HDD. I would not recommend it on a thumbdrive (flash memory) beccause the temp file usage will kill the drive in days or weeks. But the external HDD works great. I can't provide all the exact details on how to do it, so please don't ask, but here's an excellent reference as a starting point for you: http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=14181

The only thing you have to remember is that, in spite of dire warnings about how impossible it is, it actually can be done and works just great.
