I am running XP.The program menu bars and then those columns where you access your programs some of the programs are off my screen. I know there's a way to either consolidate or create another column, but I can't remember what to call this in order to look it up.
My desktop has decieded to add the 'menu' bar down trhe left had side of the screen. It is the same as the type which appears on the left hand side of open folders in XP. I created a new user account and it was OK until the screen went into screen saver and I needed to log back in and the problem was there again. This appears to have only started to happen when I added my XP laptop to the wired network.
How do I add a program to the Open With menu? One of my co-workers does not have the option to choose Excel when she right clicks on text (.txt) files and selects Open With. I've already tried selecting Choose Program and navigating to excel.exe. That does not add it. Other users have the option. These text files are already formatted in a way that will open in Excel with everything in columns without going through the wizard. I don't have any problems editing the registry if that is required as long as I have detailed instructions.
This is a simple one but I cannot seem to find out how to delete the history for the Run program. I want to remove the past items I ran from the dropdown menu. I am running XP home.
In Windows XP, the Windows Explorer application is found under "start/programs/accessories". I clicked on the application listing there and dragged it on to my desktop. There is now an icon on the desktop for it, but it has disappeared from the apps listings in "start/programs/accessories". How can I restore the program listing there?
I've got left over start menu items that no longer link to a program. How can I get rid of these? Are there any simple apps that find these and remove them?
I would like to organize my program shortcuts into folders in the Start, All Programs menu, but I can't find the main folder where these shortcuts are listed?
I recently deleted a Trojan virus from my computer, and thought I was all smart for being able to do so, but to my dismay, I opened my Start Menu to find that The "All Programs" button had somehow been removed from the start menu.Any ideas on how to get it back would be greatly appreciated. My English teacher doesn't seem like the type I could use the "My computer broke " excuse on.
The shortcut icons for frequently used programs that appear in the start menu below the Internet, Email, etc. shortcuts seem to have disappeared. I noticed it when I rebooted after having defragmented system files using PerfectDisk 8. I assumed the list just got cleared, but it seems no matter how many programs I open, no new shortcuts are ever created. The space just remains blank.I'm not sure if this has any bearing, but I'm also running WindowBlinds 6. I've had WindowBlinds for a long long time and have never run across this issue. Also disabling WB doesn't seem to fix anything.I'm sure the solution is something quite simple
When I click on my Programs Menu and it shows my programs the columns are huge. I don't know how they got so big but I would like to make them smaller because there is no room for new installed programs to show in the columns.
I am running Win XP on a HP laptop. When I boot up a program always tries to load but it is one that I don't have or have tried to load. It always asks for the disk which I do not have. It is not located in the start folder, so I do not know where to go to delete it.
I have run sfc scan now (because the startup of win xp was slower than before ( i count the 3 blue bars when xp is loading, and it was increased from 6 to 11) and asks the win xp cd. after the check, I rerun the sfc scannow, to be sure that everything is ok, but asks again for winxp cd (there is still corrupted files?). I run sfc /purgecache, then again scannow to refill the cache, and after i rerun the scannow it still asks for the xin xp cd!!! what is going on here?(note that i have win xp pro gr without sp2, after the installation i installed sp2. I re instaled the sp2, rerun the sfc /purgecache , then scannow, and again the scannow and still asks for the win xp cd.)
the scroll bars on my computer work fine, and they move fast, however, when I use my internet scroll bars, the page moves EXTREMELY slow. How can I fix this?
I want to increase the size of the font on the different bars [don't know all the names of them], the one where file, edit, view, etc are. also the one at the bottom of the screen too.
I've attached a shot of the toolbar at the foot of the screen. You'll see that one of the open programs is MS Excel. There are 5 Excel files open at the same time, but the icon only lists the active one.Until about an hour ago if I had 5 files open the Excel icon stated this and I could click on the icon to choose the file I wanted to work on and I LIKED IT THAT WAY
There is a saved history for when I type things in searches, like Google or eBay. So every time I type something new it brings up a drop down menu of past things I have typed that start with the same letters. I want to remove this or shut off this feature.
The windows explorer address bar is gone. I've already checked/unchecked View>Toolbars>Address Bar several times--no help. This is XP Home. It works fine on my other PC running XP Pro.
recently my computer takes ages to get passed the Windows XP load screen. Sometimes the scrolling bars stop and it freezes before i it loads the desktop. It works if i safe boot it, but often it doesn't pass the Windows XP startup screen, or it takes a long time (approx 100s) to get passed it. Before it only took at most 10 seconds. It don't know why it's doing it. I've tried running a registry mechanic, prefetch cleaner and all that jazz. But it's still taking awhile to get passed that XP screen.
My printer (Dell A940 All in One) is possessed. It is printing huge blue bars over all colour images and text. Here's a picture. Is there something broken with the printer or does the cartridge need to be replaced?
After installing Windows XP Pro from XP Home my computer does not display the startup taskbar. I don't know if I have a virus or not Also, when I type, the cursor randomly lets the last letter/number to go ahead of the cursor so that the next letter is behind the one I just typed.
I have no specific reason pertaining to the problem but... about 2 months ago I noticed that just after the splash screen disappears, my desktop comes up completely blank, for (and I've timed this again and again) 84 seconds. With no apparent reason. After which the start menu appears along with my shortcuts and my lappy is as fast as ever!! I can confirm the following (and regular) maintenance activities performed before the problem.
My hard drive and Regisrty were both completely defragged and happy, I performed regular SpyBot, Ad Aware, Mcafee scans for the obvious, I ran Tune Up Utilities to remove all of my invalid reg entries, CCleaner for general crap, My system was optimised with PC Booster, as far as I was aware my machine was running sweet as a nut... It wasn't as if any of the mentioned actions were run close to the issue arising. It just happened one day.........
1: Because of my eyesite I always have my screen resolution set at 640 by 480. On the computer with XP it is not avalible. Is there different drivers or a program that will let me make 640 by 480 avalable? If so how do I go about this?
2: I have 2 computers that are virtually the same. Both have XP Pro opperating system. I am the webmaster for a couple of sites. there is a menu at the left of the site. On one computer the menu will display on the other is will not. The menue is an applet code . Is there a setting on the second computer that I am missing to display this menue?
3: for years I used Norton. When I loaded XP I used it a day or so and then loaded Norton on that PC. It slowed it down very much. So much that I took it back off. Now I need a suggestion on what virus scan will be as good as Norton but not slow my PC down so much.
A family member ran Norton Anti-Virus and an XP error message came up saying that XP needed to be reinstalled. I don't have a backup disc or a Windows XP disc. I read in another post "The system should have at least come with the setup files located on a hidden partition on the hard drive." Does anyone know how to access this? I can still get into programs and whatnot through pressing ctrl+alt+delete, clicking Applications and New Task. Then I browse for whatever I want to open, i.e. AOL etc. But XP has otherwise completely disappeared off my desktop. All that is there is the background. No taskbar, Start menu, or anything. It won't right click either. I tried System Restore, no luck
I installed Windows XP on my computer, but when I got to restart / cut it on its just a blank sceeen. I can't see nothing like (start menu, my computer,etc..) What have I done and how do I correct it ?
