May 2, 2006Sometimes when I right click on a file the menu will stick on the screen and will not remove itself unless the computer is restarted.

Dec 11, 2005I have a graphics editing program that won't save to My Pictures folder because it can't overwrite an older version of the same file name claiming that the folder is read only. I've change the attributes over and over and it defaults back to that immediately so I can't edit my pictures and get rid of the old version without deleting it first. When I reopened it, the changes hadn't stuck. Installation - Portable Applications On USB - Memory Stick
Oct 12, 2007Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable. Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.
After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is defeated. The PortableApps software does seem to install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive (F:SoftwarePortableStartPortableApps.exe), I get various error messages. Sometimes the message says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).
As a lay person, my guess is that something necessary for properly installing the programs was lost when I formated the drive. However, I do not see why this should happen, because the hard drive on my home computer has been formated more than once when it became infected, but there was never any problem with installing software afterwards.
Unable To Place A Memory Stick Into Usb Port?

to format it. My printer and mouse work fine in the other usb ports and I have also swap them in all 4 ports.This also might be connect to the problem in that I also can not defrag my c-drive as another application has exclusive use of it.

Mar 5, 2007I added a 512mb stick and 500gb hard drive to an AMD 1.7mhz system that was running fine but just out of disk space (figured as long as the chassis was open to throw in the ram too). Now I can barely use the darn thing. Runs extremely slow. Audio and video and useless, responses are crazy - even the mouse is herky-jerky. Went into taskmanager and there is one program that seems to be using a lot of processor time but I alway have that one running even in the 'old' configuration. I can kill it and it helps a little bit but why should more resources make things worse. I have AVG running for virus checking and regularly run adaware and spybot for malware checking. Checked system settings and everything looks fine there as well - cache, VM, performance, etc. all set to normal levels (768mb by the way).

Lag After Splash Screen And Start Menu
Apr 4, 2007I have no specific reason pertaining to the problem but... about 2 months ago I noticed that just after the splash screen disappears, my desktop comes up completely blank, for (and I've timed this again and again) 84 seconds. With no apparent reason. After which the start menu appears along with my shortcuts and my lappy is as fast as ever!! I can confirm the following (and regular) maintenance activities performed before the problem.
My hard drive and Regisrty were both completely defragged and happy, I performed regular SpyBot, Ad Aware, Mcafee scans for the obvious, I ran Tune Up Utilities to remove all of my invalid reg entries, CCleaner for general crap, My system was optimised with PC Booster, as far as I was aware my machine was running sweet as a nut... It wasn't as if any of the mentioned actions were run close to the issue arising. It just happened one day.........
Screen Resolution - Display Menu
Feb 23, 20061: Because of my eyesite I always have my screen resolution set at 640 by 480. On the computer with XP it is not avalible. Is there different drivers or a program that will let me make 640 by 480 avalable? If so how do I go about this?
2: I have 2 computers that are virtually the same. Both have XP Pro opperating system. I am the webmaster for a couple of sites. there is a menu at the left of the site. On one computer the menu will display on the other is will not. The menue is an applet code . Is there a setting on the second computer that I am missing to display this menue?
3: for years I used Norton. When I loaded XP I used it a day or so and then loaded Norton on that PC. It slowed it down very much. So much that I took it back off. Now I need a suggestion on what virus scan will be as good as Norton but not slow my PC down so much.

May 13, 2005A family member ran Norton Anti-Virus and an XP error message came up saying that XP needed to be reinstalled. I don't have a backup disc or a Windows XP disc. I read in another post "The system should have at least come with the setup files located on a hidden partition on the hard drive." Does anyone know how to access this? I can still get into programs and whatnot through pressing ctrl+alt+delete, clicking Applications and New Task. Then I browse for whatever I want to open, i.e. AOL etc. But XP has otherwise completely disappeared off my desktop. All that is there is the background. No taskbar, Start menu, or anything. Apr 29, 2008I run XP SP2 on Athlon 2600 and 512 MB RAM and last night I shut it down as usal. When I turn my computer on this morning, it started to boot, but after few seconds, the long message appears, something like: "We are sorry for inconvenience but Windows can not start... " and it tells me to either boot into Safe mode, use last configuration, or start Windows normally. The last option is highlighted. But after that, blue screen flashes for just a moment (long enough to see there is some text but not long enough to read it), and then it goes back to start... detecting hard drive and stuff. It keeps looping like that forever. I tried to go to safe mode, but the same things happen. It goes back to start and then a "Start Windows normally" is Highlighted again.
