I currently have a few problems in that I can not use my CD drive or my DVD drive.I also am unable to place a memory stick into my usb port and not be asked
to format it. My printer and mouse work fine in the other usb ports and I have also swap them in all 4 ports.This also might be connect to the problem in that I also can not defrag my c-drive as another application has exclusive use of it.
I am running Windows XP in a Compaq Presario, with CD reader and CD/DVD burner. My question: How do I get a DVD(with photos and sound) onto a Flash Memory stick or an SD card??

View 3 Replies View RelatedImmediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable. Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.
After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is defeated. The PortableApps software does seem to install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive (F:SoftwarePortableStartPortableApps.exe), I get various error messages. Sometimes the message says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).
As a lay person, my guess is that something necessary for properly installing the programs was lost when I formated the drive. However, I do not see why this should happen, because the hard drive on my home computer has been formated more than once when it became infected, but there was never any problem with installing software afterwards.

Please, remove write protection.According to problem solver there is nothing wrong with the memory stick, or HUBs. Memory stick's on utility program won't allow me to format it. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using a P4 1.5 MHz system with 512 MB RAM, 64 MB Gforce MX card, new 80 GB hard disk with 4 partitions each 20 GB. My OS is, Windows XP with SP2 installed. I am getting error that my virtual memory is low(page file size). When I change the settings using the System icon in the control panel, still it reports the page file size as 0 MB only. I re-booted after changing, tried System Managed Size option. But still the page file size remains as 0 only.....
When I press the set button after the new settings it shows the changes for the drive and then asks to reboot. After re-booting it says "Either no page file or virtual memory too low" I tried re-booting in safe mode too. Still the change is not effected.

I added a 4GB partition, dedicated to the paging file. At this point, I have my Master Drive's (C) paging file set to 2MB-50MB; the Slave Drive (D) has no paging file and the partition on the Slave (G) is set to 1536MB-3800MB.
The biggest memory hog is Firefox, which gets to around 200,000k if I let it. Spyware Terminator runs at about 50,000k, as does Thunderbird.Then, I have several programs that run in the 30,000k range (FeedDemon, Replay AV, etc).The rest (around 20 programs are fairly low users).What I'm trying to accomplish is, getting that little bit of extra performance so that when I'm running a program like Winamp and enjoying music, I don't get stutters in the performance when I open a browser or execute a function.
I use WinXP SP3. This problem concerns my USB stick (a 1GB SanDisk).Whenever I stick it into the USB slot on my machine some noxiously helpful program launches itself (the U3 Launchpad), I always close it, but it still adders some folders to my stick (which I really don't need, and am tired of deleting after each use). View 8 Replies View RelatedIm currently in the process of bringing my PC back from the brink. St present I am unable to boot because a system32/hal.dll is not present. Before this I was unable to boot without seeing a blue screen showing a lack of memory. I have been having problems for a few weeks now. At first just a little slow down and the occassional crash, but it has recently escalated to large scale slow down and fatal errors causing the pc to reboot. From the performances menu in Task Manager I can see large large CPU usage peaks with the processor running at 100% consistantly with no programs running. Simil;arly, on startup the PF usage is settled around 200MB but gradually increases over a matter of minutes until it is 2 or 3 GB+. This is usually about when the system declares a fatal error and reboots itself.
The only process that appears to be taking processor power at these points is svchost, that will usually run between 0-1%. I have been aprehensive to end this though as I know it to be a core process. I also had similar problems with lsass.exe. I researched and figured it could be the Welchia Worm or MSBLAST.D virus but have found no trace with any anti virus software. I tried the suggested treatments regardless with no success. A couple of days ago the problems got to the point where no prgrams would open and the system rebooted every few minutes. I managed to rectify this by reinstalling windows, but it appears to have been short lived. Now, after a fatal error the PC has been unable to reboot.
Sometimes when I right click on a file the menu will stick on the screen and will not remove itself unless the computer is restarted.

When I reopened it, the changes hadn't stuck. I am trying to design and get a Website up and running. I am finding this confusing enough. Then Dreamweaver told me I ought to check to see if IIS (Internet Information Server) was installed, so I did (it wasn't - no C:/Inetpub). Then, again following directions, I went to Control Panel/ Add or Remove Programs/ Add or Remove Window Components to install IIS.
Not an option.So I went to www.microsoft.com/downloads and could find all sorts of ancillary helpers to IIS (Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Resource Kit Tools, Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager for Windows XP, Internet Information Services (IIS) Lockdown Tool 2.1) but noplace from which I could just download IIS 6.0.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI added a 512mb stick and 500gb hard drive to an AMD 1.7mhz system that was running fine but just out of disk space (figured as long as the chassis was open to throw in the ram too). Now I can barely use the darn thing. Runs extremely slow. Audio and video and useless, responses are crazy - even the mouse is herky-jerky. Went into taskmanager and there is one program that seems to be using a lot of processor time but I alway have that one running even in the 'old' configuration. I can kill it and it helps a little bit but why should more resources make things worse. I have AVG running for virus checking and regularly run adaware and spybot for malware checking. Checked system settings and everything looks fine there as well - cache, VM, performance, etc. all set to normal levels (768mb by the way).
