Maintenance :: Computer Random Freezing?
Aug 6, 2014
My computer freezes randomly when I am using multiple programs. For example Photoshop and Chrome. Fortunately it doesn't happen all the time. But is it is still very annonying. I think the problem is driver related but I'm not sure. It has never happend when playing games.
Symptons: Freeze/Lockup. Cannot control the mouse. The only thing I can do when it happens is to hold the power button.
Information:
- Computer: Alienware 17 Laptop
- OS: Windows 8.1
- Attachment: Event Viewer administrative logs- Do you need more information?

This has been happening for a while, my computer will randomly freeze up, most the time I can move my mouse around but my internet seems to cut out (cant load any pages), all applications start to not respond, and it takes around 1-3 minutes to unfreeze. I have a ASUS G46V gaming laptop.

My specs are:
I5 4670k
MSI g45 z78 mobo
16 GB G.Skill 1866
samsung 840 evo SSD
toshiba 2 TB HDD
EVGA GTX 760
I have completely installed a clean win 8.1 install and still have this freezing issue. It happens after i login and after my bitdefender internet security loads fully i try to click on the desktop icons but they are frozen. My mouse moves and i can click on the taskbar and startbutton and CRTL+ALT+DELETE as well. It freezes the desktop icons for 30seconds max. I have booted into safemode and it occurs there as well.
I have ran multiple malware and antivirus scans, sfc/scannow, DISM /Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth, checked my event viewer for any errors, ran chk dsk, bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes, i cant figure it out. All drivers are up to date, I disabled my lan adapter since i am using wifi. Windows updates are updated, defragged the harddrives, and I been reading through forum after forum but i have not seen this exact problem before. Also this is on stock BIOS no overclock, I also monitored the cpu and memory usage during the time of freezing and it nothing out of the ordinary usage, cpu is kept within 5% and memory is at 20% or less.

I have Asus Z87 Deluxe, CPU Intel I7 4770k Quad Core, Hard Drive Western Digital 4TB SATA HDD, Monitor Asus 24 class LED, Video card Asus HD7790. Running windows 8.1 pro with media centre (x64) (build 9600) It boots into legacy mode. My BIOS is American Megatrends Inc. 1007. I know there is a later version, but I am a little paranoid to flash the Bios concerned I may Brick it.
I am experiencing random screen freezing and I am not sure why. I believe I have the latest drivers for all hardware.
I am at my wits end having had this problem for a month now. I am not to tech savvy to be honest. What I am thinking is my windows should have been installed in UEFI mode ( I am thinking this only because I am running out of things to try). Do I have to do a clean install to accomplish that and if doing so is that likely to solve my problem? Most of the freezes happen when I am working on the desktop with more than one program open (but not always) but quite often it involves playing a video.

I recently did a clean reinstall of windows because I was having random BSOD/freeze issues. Everything has been fine for the last two weeks or so but I just got another BSOD playing League, and then about half an hour later I had a spike of CPU usage that froze my comp for about 30 seconds.

My computer freezes but task manager doesn't show a spike in resource usage (CPU: 8%, Memory: 38%, Hard Disk 1%, etc). I don't think it's a virus either, but I'm yet to run a scan (I have Windows Defender, which I've heard is actually good in Windows 8). Also, this install is about 2 weeks old, OEM.

I have a problem with Windows 8 in that it shall Freeze up without warning. I can get a freeze 1 a day sometimes 1 every 2-3 days but i never know to when or why. I have a Acer 5750g aspire laptop 15 core 8gb ram which came with Windows 7 pre-installed. Have had no problems with Windows 7 but ever since i upgraded to Windows cp and now Windows Pro have had this freezing problem. It is so annoying that it always seems to happen when your in the middle of some work or downloading and you lose your work because i am forced to turn of my computer and reboot again!
Do any other Windows 8 users have this problem?
I have tried many things to try and stop this, My drivers are up to date but yet i can still get a freeze.I also have Tune Up Utilities 2013 Mcafee installed so i should not really get any problems.
One thing i have been told to do is goto the msconfig and disable my services under services (by also ticking hide all Microsoft Services) except for Mcafee, This is a lot better but i have had a freeze since but maybe this was because i installed a new program and it showed up under services and i had to untick this.

I have had this computer for about a year now and it recently started acting up. What happens is the audio begins to distort and than the computer freezes if I close something out. This only used to happen when a lot of stuff was running at once or a big game was player, Spore for example.
Recently it has been doing it more. Before if I skyped with youtube on while i played a game, you know big stuff, it would do this, but now if I have a paused youtube video or an ended youtube video on while I play minecraft it does the same thing. There is no error code or anything, I have to manually turn it off and on.

I keep getting this error on start up (see attachment for screenshot)?
This only started to happen after I did a scan using malware anti malware bytes program. My computer keeps freezing as well since I scanned with the program as well, how do I fix that?

The problem is that every now and again (30-60 minutes of use) my computer appears to freeze, EX: the screen is fixed and I cant move the cursor and nothing on the screen changes, the PC does not seem to react to keyboard input: CTRL+SHFT+ESC for example. I have noticed at least once (while playing a game) that the sound that was playing when it occurs tends to loop.
When this happens all I can do is switch the PC off from the Power Source - wait 10 seconds and replug and boot. If I try to boot without unplugging from the Power Source - the PC fails to boot asking me to put in the Windows Disk.
This issue occurs in different types of use, sometimes when I am playing 3D games, sometimes watching youtube or even reading the BBC news. No events are logged which give indication to what is happening.
SECONDLY: On some occasions when I leave my PC idle - I come back an hour later and it has rebooted itself (No BOSD Logged) to the Boot Failure Menu.
I have had one blue screen in the past 2 weeks (DPC Watchdog Violation) which seems to point to my SSD, but I cant figure out how to fix it - or if that is a secondary issue. Unfortunately as my SSD is only 64 GIG when i did get the BOSD, it didnt store it due to the space remaining on the disk (16 GB).
I have tried to attach my system event viewer (Cleared prior to this latest incident) but the uploader says its an invalid file .
Additional Notes
OS: Windows 8.1 (Installed on Release Day, Never had problems with 8.0)
GFX: Nvidia 550 TI
Disks: SSD (Crucial M4 64 GB) (OS Install), 1TB (Hard Drive storing games and files on software partitions)
8GB Memory (tried reseating)
PSU: 700 WATT
I know the issue isn't heat related as I have monitored this. I think the problem may have started a week back when I installed the latest NVIDIA Drivers - I have since uninstalled and reinstalled them, all my PC Drivers are up to date. to reduce load on GFX I have unplugged my main monitor.
I have run Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender (My AV), RogueKiller, TDSKiller - several times, no viruses/rootkits, the occasional ad tracking on SuperAntiSpyware probably due to internet browsing.
I have no windows updates pending.

Yeah I just got my new computer not long ago and there has been nothing but trouble using Skype. During video calls Skype freezes and locks up my computer making me have to hold down the power button to shut it off. This happens often. I first thought it was a video card issue and Dell sent me a replacement card. Still happens. I have to chalk it up to Skype not being very compatible with Windows 8. This issue only happens when on Skype. I saw there was a patch Windows update for Skype but I have it already installed. I have no clue how to stop this issue. This is a brand new Dell XPS 8700 with 12gb Ram.

Not sure what is going on right now. My computer was fine this morning before I left for work. My wife said it was working fine this morning, and then she left it for a while and when it came back, she was getting blank screens.
When I took a look, it was blank. I did a hard shutdown and after the welcome screen, got a black screen of death. After several reboots, it finally got to the tile screen, but froze there.
So, right now, I'm operating out of safe mode where things seem more normal. Anyway, here are the logs.

My system specs are the same as under my profile.
Running a single R9-290 on Win 8.1 Pro 64bit.
The PC completely hangs up when installing the new 14.9/14.7 beta drivers.
It extracts fine, checks system requirements, starts installation, reaches "Installing AMD Display Drivers" and flickers twice, and freezes up a second later.
Tried almost everything. Uninstalled previous 14.4 via control panel (they work fine btw), used Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode, restarted and tried installing, but to no avail.
Have also tried uninstalling the MSI afterburner and other similar programs but get the same result every time.

After doing a malwarebytes anti malware test, my computer freezes/crashes every now and then. I'm not sure if its just coincidence but I'm a bit worried.
When the freeze starts nothing is clickable except windows explorer, then when i click on it that freezes as well. If I have a youtube video playing the sound will continue but not the video and sometimes the sound will stop.
Also when it freezes and I press ctrl+alt+delete nothing happens. And sometime after clicking things and it not responding the stuff I clicked will open when the freeze stops.
It it someting to do with my CPU, RAM or hard drive?
I have two hard drives btw. A ssd which has my OS and some games and programs on. And an old 1Tb normal hard drive for more programs, games etc.

So I bought a Acer Laptop (Acer Aspire E1-570G) that comes with 4GB of ram (2 months ago).
First problem I'd like to tell is that when I right-click to desktop, it loads for ~15sec untill it opens "Right-Click" menu up, and after that it loads about ~5sec, when I right click any icon, then it loads for ~5sec and when finally this right-click menu opens and I click "Open File location" then it loads for another ~10sec to open it's location. I saw that when you go to Device Manager and disable your graphics card and enable them, it would fix problems, also I tried ShellView, none of them worked.
Second problem is that after I updated my graphics drivers (NOT BETA) then after that at one time, all my 4GB will be used causing pc to freeze and I have to force restart it. Now I went and opened Task Manger and processes that "ate" my RAM were System and Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted) (8), first it's okay but after some time I was ablet to see how ram usage from normal, 1,8GB went up to 3.9GB in ~1min.
My friend has same problems and he has 8GB of ram, so me having 4GB can't be the issue.
Also I would mention that restarts are VERY slow, it loads the boot screen, then this white circle goes round and round, then I get black screen for few minutes and then it's useable. I already minimized my startup programs!

It boots OK. Dell 755 dual core 1.8 3.5Gb ram,
For some time now, the machine will suddenly freeze, after 10 sec or so back to working, using any program. When I open outlook I'm now getting a message saying outlook didn't close properly, or personal folder didn't close properly. I always shut down al rpgrogram before switching off.
After it's frozen you can hear the HDD crackling a little, it's like backing up. Don't a HDD scan and check everything seem to be OK. I did look through the log, I noticed a lot of multiple triggers. Don't know what that means.
I run a Huawei modem since I used a Tigo chip, when It boots up, I notice the FDD light comes on. When I leave the modem in the USB and boot up, I loose my CD ROM icon, to get it back If I need it, I have to remove any usb drive like Modem, flash drive it reappears. This has happened for long long time. It did the same in Win7.

I installed Windows 8 and another monitor on my GeForce GT 240 video card. I have one monitor on a DVI and another monitor on VGA. Every couple of minutes the computer shuts down. It can be anywhere from one minute to one hour or maybe not at all. My power setting or set to NEVER on both monitor and Sleep. I'm wondering if it can be my Video card that is shutting down my computer. I know Video cards, and RAM that can stop a computer cold. Or could it be something in Windows 8.

Ever since I have bought this computer, it has constantly crashed. When I attempt to fix something, for example: re-seat the memory, made sure there was plenty of cable slack, etc. The system will then seem stable for 7-10 days. Then out of the blue, the system will crash several times in a short time (sometimes this period can be a few hours or a few days). Even though it has constantly crashed (in the hundreds of times) I would say I have actually witnessed it less than 10 times. There was one time though the system had crashed, rebooted, and then even crashed again before I even had a chance to log in.
The file included is from the last 2 months and it has 30 files. This appears to be a rather large number, this is nothing compared to what it used to be like when I first purchased this system a year ago.

PhotoShop CS5

About 2 months back i had a new pc build. Since then, either 2 things would happen. My computer screen will complete freeze, with a buzzing sound and i would have to manually restart or i would get a BDOS with a buzzing sound and the computer auto restarts. These crashes are completely random, sometimes it would happen couple times a day, sometimes i can go a week without one. i also notice about almost all of these happens when im gaming. and everytime i look at the event log, its always the same Kernel-Power 41.

Running Windows 8 Pro since its release and it has been a nice journey so far but recently or more precisely since last 3-4 days, windows has been hanging up and being unresponsive and the only way is manual hard shutdown.
One time it hang up in middle of skype call and last time it hang up in middle of browsing in Google Chrome.Windows is updated to the last update i.e 02/03/2013.
Also when laptop hangs up the fan starts rotating at high speed.
Any tests i need to run to pinpoint the source of hang ups??
I think its more of a software issue rather than hardware ...

The problem is laptop hangs up randomly for example when chrome is opened or i am reading a PDF file etc etc.
This happens when laptop is plugged in as well as when it is running on battery.
Is this a driver issue? or some other thing is causing the cause??
One more thing when the laptop hangs up nothing works even Cltr+alt+del and fan is on full blow.I have to do the hard shut down by long clicking on power button.

Having a problem with the Regular Maintenance waking the computer (Windows 8 on a Lenovo Q-190) to do its scheduled task as it's supposed to do. Here are the symptoms:
1. If I change the time for Scheduled Maintenance in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL be reflected properly in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Scheduler.
2. However, if I check the box for "Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time" in the Action Center (Change Maintenance Settings), it WILL NOT reflect in the Properties of the Regular Maintenance Task in Task Schedular. Specially, I check the box to wake up my computer in the Action Center Maintenance Settings, but the corresponding checkmark is NOT reflected ("Wake the computer to run this task"), in the properties of the actual task in Task Scheduler.
3. I then put the checkmark directly in the Regular Maintenance Task itself ("Wake the computer to run this task"). However, at some point in the future, (not right away; I close and then reopen the task to make sure that it 'sticks'), the checkmark "disappears. Then, the task does not run at night while the computer is asleep, but runs in the morning when I wake the computer for regular use. At that point, the checkmark in the task is gone.

I have an HP laptop (G6-2005AX) with the following configuration
CPU: AMD A8-4500M APU 4-cores with Radeon HD Graphics
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7640G + 7600M Dual Graphics
Memory : 8 GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM (2x4GB in dual channel)
Mainboard: Hewlett-Packard 184A
Hard Drive: Seagate ST500LM0 12 HN-M500MBB 500GB 5400RPM
I'm using AVG free 2014 as AV and did a full system scan - no viruses.
The problem is that Windows 8.1 (64bit, pro) boots up really slow - taking upto 6-7 minutes. After it boots up and, well I don't know exactly how to put this - let's say "settles down", everything works as normal. After getting past the password screen, clicking on the desktop tile takes around 1-2 minutes to boot into desktop, after that opening any program (Chrome, MS-Word etc) will take 3-4 minutes - but after it has "settled", everything works as it should.
Also, another curious problem I am facing is that once in a while, when typing my password and logging in, Windows boots into a temporary profile (no apps, blank desktop) and a message appears on the notification area that "windows has logged you on with a temporary profile" or something similar - I need to sign out, then after I sign in again, my real profile gets loaded.
I thought the problem of logging into a temp profile, I thought was that the PC was not verified - I verified it by going to Change PC settings --> Accounts. But after 4-5 days, I see the option of verifying the PC again.

I recently built my fourth computer with the following components:
Case: Thermaltake Soprano Mid-Tower VO900M1N2N
MOBO: ASUS Z-87 Deluxe/Quad
CPU: Intel i7-4770K (Haswell)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W
HD: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB
GPU: ASUS Radeon HD7790
Logitech MX3000 Wireless Keyboard & Mouse Combo
The operating system is Windows 8.1 Pro (clean install on the SSD). The system is so fast and awesome that it refuses to shut down. It makes no difference how I shutdown, it restarts in about 3 seconds. I have to physically cut power to the PSU to shut it down. I have updated all the device drivers and have the latest BIOS (version 1707) according to the ASUS website. I
As a troubleshooting measure, I also did a clean install of Windows 8.1 (not Pro version) on a 250 GB WD HD without the MOBO and GPU drivers and booted with only this HD (all other storage devices unplugged). The same problem persists so I believe it is a BIOS setting or a motherboard problem. I am using the default BIOS settings without overclocking the CPU.

I have had some issues with my laptop running very hot even when it's not used. I figured out that it was because of my cpu running at around 80% all the time. This of course, is causing a cpu idle temp of around 65c and a quickly depleted battery.
The computer (a Sony VAIO SVS1513C5E) have two modes (Stamina and speed) that switches between silence mode (low effect and integrated graphics) and high performance mode (hybrid graphics, high performance). CPU temp is at 65c when running in 'silence' mode (can't say that it is very silent, given the fanspeed to cool down the computer). High performance increases this to 75c (still idling!), and increases the fan volume by quite a lot.
I did scan it with windows defender, without anything coming up. I am also running process explorer at the moment, it says that system is using ~20% cpu, services.exe a tad above 20% and around 20% idle. The rest of the processes are using a total of around 2-3%, leaving 37% (?). The 20% from services.exe seems to be mostly svchost and some intel bluethoot driver (that I will be uninstalling, as I dont use bluethoot anyways).
