When Shut Down Later, The Update Tries To Install And The Installation Hangs?

Mar 3, 2012

1) Download Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 (KB2647516)
2) PC crashes while making a restore point.3) Reboot - normal startup. But when I shut down later, the update tries to install and the installation hangs. After disc activity ceases, I shut down manually.4) Reboot - normal startup. At this point, I decided to use System Restore to clean out any residue from the failed install before downloading the patch again. Yup, you guessed it, I used the damaged restore point. D'oh!5) PC reboots as part of restore process - I get a startup error.6) Scan for problems - attempt repair - recieve the following error. "StartRep.exe Application Error. The instruction at 0x75bc9a45 referenced memory at 0x538e0e85. The memory could not be read"7) I try to restore to an earlier point, but the restore fails."System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. Unspecified error (0x80070020)"8) I close System Restore window and PC reboots automatically - normal startup.9) I recieve a notification from "Solve PC Issues" in the taskbar saying Microsoft Security Essentials is out of date and would I like to update?

So here I am. My PC appears to be running smoothly, but I don't know if there's any hidden damage in the system. I still want to clear out any residue from the failed install before I download the patch again, but now I'm wary of using System Restore. Also, the MSE update notification has me puzzled - the last restore point I tried to restore to preceeded an MSE definitions update, but that restore failed (didn't it?) and anyway, I don't normally recieve definitions update notifications from "Solve PC Issues". This las left me unsure where my system is at restore point-wise right now.

Power Loss To Notebook Shows Loss Of Windows Activation?

Jan 15, 2013

I had a power loss while running on battery (it still showed power left, but suddenly shut down anyway) and when I restart, it reports that the Windows is not activated and Window is not genuine and system might be a victim of "counterfeiting."

Is this a virus (I have MSE on continuously and about once a week scan with Malwarebytes)? I have run 'sfc /scannow' with filtered output ('findstr /c: "[SR]" c:.....logsCBSCBS.log" and it appears as usual.

How can I lose my Windows activation?

Computer Won't Power On After Power Loss

Mar 17, 2012

My computer wouldn't shut down, even with holding in the power button, and so I just let it run out the battery. Then it wont turn on. I tried holding down the power button to clear out any charge that might be remaining. I have managed to get it back on, but I have to make a connection at the clip where you plug the power button ribbon into the mobo. Also, this is the second time I have had to do this. The computer works fine afterwards...or seems to anyway.

Setting Can Change To Shut Off Power To USB Buses / When Power Off PC?

Jun 9, 2011

I use my PC for audio production and I have a few external controller devices that are USB powered, for example a midi keyboard. I recently had to build PC due to a theft....long story short after building the new PC I've noticed that my USB buses have continual power to these external devices after I've powered down the PC. My old windows 7 PC did not do this. Is there a setting I can change to shut off power to the USB buses when I power off the PC? Or is this a hardware issue?

Computer Randomly Dies But No Power Loss

May 10, 2012

I had issues with my computer displaying symptoms of a faulty PSU. I was shutting down instantly whenever I ran intensive games for too long.Soon after those issues went away, I started getting random freezes, crashes, and BSODs. I finally tracked this down to a bad version of firmware on my SSD, and upgraded it by upgrading the firmware version, doing a 'secure erase', or something along those lines, as OCZ calls it, then installing a brand new copy of Windows 7.Everything went fine for a little bit. It's been 1-2 weeks or so since I upgraded the firmware.Over the past few days, I have noticed random ... near-shutdowns. Basically, my monitor was off, and my computer was unresponsive - but the lights and fans and what-not were on.I thought something tried to shut down my computer or something, and didn't think much of it. Maybe a weird Windows Update, iunno.Note: The hard reboot function on my computer (a tiny button near my power button) that usually works without issue does not work when this happens. My computer still has power, but it seems like it just... died. No monitor connection. No response whatsoever.A simple holding down of the power button and then pressing it again when it turns off seems to work, although the power up from that point takes a bit longer than normal.

Today, I have seen this first-hand 2 times. Just today. I was doing something, the sound started skipping - at which point my monitor disconnected, although for a few seconds after, I could still hear the guy I was talking to on Skype, and he could hear me. A few seconds and the sound dies down, and my comp is completely gone. Power still running as I already mentioned.Do note that this has happened both when I was running an intensive game and when I wasn't running much of anything - certainly nothing intensive.

I've already replaced my PSU, upgraded my SSD firmware, and reformatted my main HD (not data drive) and reinstalled Windows. I ran memtest a little while ago and it ran w/o issues, 2 passes, 0 fails.FYI, I've checked temperatures. My computer is not at all overheating.S This has been going on for months. I use this computer for gaming, programming, and work.

Edit: My computer just "died" again - for the third or fourth time today. I'd like to note that for 2-3 seconds right after this happens (i.e. right when my monitor goes dark and my computer stops being responsive), my fans get very loud - much louder then they normally would. After this, my fans go back to the normal volume level that they are usually at.The only thing notable in my Windows Event Viewer is that there was a generic, unexpected loss of power. It leads me to information about a "Kernel Power Event 41", with the following link:[URL]

Power Loss, And Windows Tools For Analyzing Possible Damage?

Jul 15, 2010

Today some maintenance personnel were working on my bathroom in my apartment. I stepped out to take care of some errands while they worked. I put my computer into sleep mode (NOT hibernation - Actually sleep mode). When I got home, I realized that all of the clocks were flashing "12:00" and my computer was powered off. When I talked to the maintenance crew, they said that they had encountered a problem in the bathroom and caused a short. This, in turn, tripped the breaker that my computer room was on, which they then reset. This means that my computer, at minimum, experienced a hard power loss while running. It may or may not have experienced a surge (!), though it is on a surge protector. And the surge protector did not have its safety lights lit to indicate a surge.

Unfortunately, since using the computer I'm noticing a lot of oddities. I played some TF2 to unwind, and for the first time ever it crashed. My Video Card got stuck in "uplocked/3D" mode. Web browsing was slower than I'm used to, and overall it seemed like the computer picked up a lot of 'chugging' where it hadn't before. Is there some method to diagnose the general health and well being of my computer in windows? Are there tools beyond CHKDSK that I can run to locate problems that may have occurred as a result of a power surge? I'm concerned that the power loss damaged my components significantly, and I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem or determine if it's all in my head.

Here are my specs, if that's important:

Windows 7 Pro x64
i7 core 920 CPU
eVGA x58 mobo
eVGA GTX 275 Video Card (197.13 drivers)
Corsair 850 W PSU
6 GB RAM

Windows 7 Blue Screen After Power Loss During Updates?

Jan 2, 2012

My computer was turned off during the update process and I am getting the blue screen. After launching the start-up repair I am told the problem cannot be solved although there is a patch preventing the system from starting. My registry files precede the date the problem occurred, I have tried to restore but there is no restore point, I cannot start in safe mode. I have launched bootrec.exe and ran FixMbrFixBoot and also RebuildBcd and none have worked. I know I will probably have to go the long way around and pull the data from my disc and do a clean install but just wondered if any of you Techsperts had a quicker fix so I can spend the rest of my life in awe at your magnificence?

Loss Of Functions Following Recommended Critical Update

Feb 12, 2012

Yesterday (11/02/12) Windows notified that there were a couple of critical updates available for installation. Always keen to keep my spec up-to-date I proceeded to install them. I'm afraid I don't know the details of the updates. As I did a System Restore (see below) they have been removed from the list of Installed Updates. After automatic installing and re-starting the first thing I noticed was that the screen resolution had been changed. Fixed that through control panel. More importantly I discovered that the following had occurred: I could not get any sound. Could not get streaming video. Flash crashed every time Certain links within Control Panel would not function Investigating (1) above, Device Manager reported that the hardware was functioning correctly. In attempting to resolve this via Control Panel/Appearance & Personalization/Personalization I noticed that the Sounds link indicated No sounds and I could not click through from the link (see below) to change anything (this happens with a few other Control Panel options).

I can find no way of reaching the sound properties. All links are non-functioning.For (2) I uninstalled Flash Player using the Flash uninstaller, cleared out the registry of any remaining entries for it (yes there were still a couple) and re-installed it (v11.1.102.55) and re-started PC. On first re-install I had no success but tried same process again and did get it to stream video (no sound). However when I started PC today we are back to the same problem.I have also cleaned registry with no improvement.Having drawn a blank with these two problems I then did a system restore to the point where the Windows updates occurred. This has not changed anything so I am really stuck as to know what if anything I can do. The system and applications generally are working fine. Networking and Internet connection is fine. As the machine came pre-loaded with Win 7 I do not have a Windows Disk.

I'm at my whit's end with this. My PC shuts down fine but hangs on restart. It does this is both safe and normal mode. It appears to hang right before the HD would get turned off. The SHUTTING DOWN screen proceeds fine and the HD stops it's activity, the screen goes black (the HD light stays) and it just hangs there. Pressing the RESET button on the PC starts it up fine. Sound Loss / System Slowdown

Sep 30, 2011

My system has recently developed an annoying problem which is causing me some concern as it could indicate something serious.Quite often when it boots up, there is instead of the properly functioning sound, a continuous high pitched whine. This goes away when I reboot. Sometimes though, this issue arises during games or other general use.If this happens when the system is running, not just the whining sound is there, but also any 3D or video graphics slow down a lot.I have attempted to remedy this by removing and replacing the soundcard and an uninstall/reinstall of the drivers. Unfortunately with no affect as regards removing the problem or it's cause.Outside of these times everything runs as it should and the sound functions perfectly both through the speakers and headphones connected via the front panel box supplied with this XF-fi series card.I am thinking about a full re-intallation of the O.S if nothing else works.

Loss Of Internet After Running System Restore?

Apr 27, 2011

This morning (Wednesday) my desktop computer brought in automaticly Tuesdays (26/04/11) set of patches, 6 in total for my machine. I turned the computer of for as I headed of to work and they installed on the shutdown. On returning from work the updates continued the install procedure on loading, but stuck at 0% for over 20mins. I decided to check the install time for this stage on my laptop 7pro x86 and it wizzed through in a few moments (laptop is a good 6yrs old). I figured the desktop was stuck and hit reset, every time it would get stuck at 0% on configuring the updates. Booted into safemode and ran system restore to the morning. Computer now loads up ok but will not connect to the internet. It would appear that its not getting an IP from the router.

What i've tried so far:After running system restore I've removed the Anti virus (Eset Smart Security). Tried setting manual ip address and ping router and laptop, also tried ping from laptop to desktop, both ways destination unreachable. reinstalled network drivers, same fault occurs. Reset winsock (netsh winsock reset catalog), rebooted after. reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset c:esetlog.txt), reported ok, rebooted same fault. ran sfc /scannow, reports system file integrity ok.Unchecked IPv6, same issue occurs. Checked network cables on laptop, ok.

Installation Hangs BEFORE 1st Reboot

This is a nightmare, after solving the first problem I had, where the installation gets stuck in 'Copying windows files' (I had to disable the floppy disk from the BIOS, even not having floppy disk physically).

Now all the files are copied and extended properly, but when showing the screen saying that the system is going to reboot, the installation freeze. It never reboot.

Then I do a hardware reboot, Windows 7 loads ok, but in the screen that reads "Completing installation..." the process never ends.

I've seen (through shift+F10) that the log file 'setupapi.dev.log' reads something like it is looking for a driver for a pci.. but don't know what it means.

Computer Hangs During Installation

Sep 2, 2012

I have a Toshiba L505-L5007 laptop and a while back the audio went out on it. After days of trying to find the problem to no avail, I was advised to try a complete factory restore because the person thought it was an OS issue. Well, now I try to restore it to factory settings but the OS hangs at the configuration screen on the 5th reboot. Is there something that I might have overlooked? I've tried scouring the internet for people with the same problems, but I can't seem to find anyone with the same problem. I've also tried upgrading the BIOS in case there was a problem there keeping Windows 7 from installing. Right now the laptop will come on, and only runs well in any of the safe modes, if I try to boot it normally it'll try to finish the installation and freeze.
