Installation Hangs BEFORE 1st Reboot

Oct 31, 2009

This is a nightmare, after solving the first problem I had, where the installation gets stuck in 'Copying windows files' (I had to disable the floppy disk from the BIOS, even not having floppy disk physically).

Now all the files are copied and extended properly, but when showing the screen saying that the system is going to reboot, the installation freeze. It never reboot.

Then I do a hardware reboot, Windows 7 loads ok, but in the screen that reads "Completing installation..." the process never ends.

I've seen (through shift+F10) that the log file 'setupapi.dev.log' reads something like it is looking for a driver for a pci.. but don't know what it means.

"Completing Installation" After 1st Reboot Hangs

Nov 19, 2009

I would very much like to try out Windows 7, since all I read about it is very positive. I am trying to install the 64 bit version on my computer, but no matter what I do, it keeps freezing at "Completing installation" after the first reboot. For a minute or so the dots-animation is still working and I can move the mouse, but after that, it just completely freezes.

Some background information:

- I have a Asus P5K-E/WiFi mainboard with the latest BIOS installed (also tried an older BIOS);

- My processor (Intel Q6600) is overclocked to 3 GHz, but I have also tried the install at stock speed (2.4 GHz);

- The jMicron controller is disabled;

- SATA mode is AHCI. This is working fine with my Windows XP installation;

- My video card is a Radeon HD2600 card with 2 DVI outputs, both connected to a monitor. I also tried connecting just one monitor, without success;

- It doesn't matter whether I install from DVD or USB flash disk, the exact same thing happens;

- I have a USB soundcard (Digidesign MBox I), but disconnecting it during installation doesn't help;

- I use a Logitech USB mouse/keyboard set;

- I have two DSP cards installed in my PC, a UAD-2 and a SSL Duende, both working fine with XP.

I'm puzzled. Anyone have a clue?

Netbook Hangs After Reboot?

Apr 18, 2012

my ASUS Eeepc 1015 netbook, running Windows 7 starter, hangs after i try to restart -- mainly after an update.

after acknowledging the restart, the screen would go dark and hang. i would have to hold down the power button to shut it off, then i would start it up manually.

as a side issue probably related to the netbook... often when the netbook goes into screensaver mode the mousepad doesn't respond when i want to get out of said screensaver mode. i have to hit a button in order for the netbook to "wake". once in a blue moon, even that doesn't work, and i have to reboot.

Windows 7 Pro X64 Hangs On Reboot, But Not On Shutdown?

Dec 8, 2010

Windows 7 Professional x64 edition is installed on a computer. During the installation, every time it went to restart the system would hang immediately; I had to do a hard reboot to continue the installation.Now Windows 7 is installed, and still hangs on reboot. When I choose Restart, the system shows the shutdown screen, goes black, and hangs. After some time waiting it never reboots and I never see the BIOS screen. However, if I choose "shutdown", it works perfectly.Also, when I force it to reboot, the system does NOT give me the message that it wasn't shut down correctly. I've reinstalled the system twice. All drivers are installed correctly, and Windows is completely up to date. I even updated the BIOS to the current version.

Computer Hangs On Reboot After Instalation

Nov 19, 2009

I have Win XP installed on my PC and I have tried several times to do a dual boot with Windows 7 RC and after each attempt I have put my system back to normal by reformatting the Windows 7 partition with Acronis Disk doctor and reimaging XP Pro with Acronis true Image.

What happens is I go through the install and the green progress bar goes pretty well right across the screen and all the stages are checked of as they are done then I get the screen that the computer wants to reboot and I let it time out and when it starts up again I get "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" the first time I left it because I didn't want to reinstall again after some time with the PC still at that screen I pressed a key and nothing happened.

Another time I pressed the key and it wanted to do another installation so I let it do a repair and when it rebooted the same thing so I tried again and removed the disk when it rebooted and when the PC gets through POST I get a black screen with a blinking cursor that I cant type anything to.

I would imagine that if I can get past this point it would be where I type in the product key.

I have tried this disk on another computer in Ubuntu with virtual box and it installed ok. I have the boot order correct I have recently installed XP pro on it. I am using a PS2 keyboard that was OK for the XP install and I can get into Bios OK.

Laptop Hangs After Closing Lid Requires Reboot?

Nov 24, 2011

After upgrading to Windows 7 everything worked fine for about 3 months. I had it set to sleep when I close the lid nnd it worked well. But suddenly it began getting pernickity. When I opened the lid, about 15 - 20 seconds later the computer totally froze and I had to reboot. Of course, when reloading I get the message that Windows shut down unexpectedly and a 'solution will be searched' but nothing every happened as far as that goes.I made a new profile but it did the same thing when working in that.At approximately the same time as this began, I lost my 'start menu' list, and although I can 'attach items to the list, upon reboot, they disappear.

Computer Hangs During Installation

Sep 2, 2012

I have a Toshiba L505-L5007 laptop and a while back the audio went out on it. After days of trying to find the problem to no avail, I was advised to try a complete factory restore because the person thought it was an OS issue. Well, now I try to restore it to factory settings but the OS hangs at the configuration screen on the 5th reboot. Is there something that I might have overlooked? I've tried scouring the internet for people with the same problems, but I can't seem to find anyone with the same problem. I've also tried upgrading the BIOS in case there was a problem there keeping Windows 7 from installing. Right now the laptop will come on, and only runs well in any of the safe modes, if I try to boot it normally it'll try to finish the installation and freeze.

Installation Hangs On Black Screen

Nov 10, 2009

I thought I'd move with the times and picked up a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I had Vista installed before.

Booted from CD, delete/recreate partition and did a clean install.

The installer hangs on a black screen after the first reboot. Even left it overnight without progress. Forcing a reboot and going into Safe Mode the setup tries to continue, then comes up with a prompt saying 'Setup cannot run in Safe mode, rebooting your computer', whereupon it hangs again.

This is the sequence I tried:

1. Boot from CD, delete boot partition, new partition, clean install (HUNG)

2. Disconnect router, then as 1. (HANG)

3. Reset BIOS to factory defaults, then as 1. (HANG)

4. Disconnect external hard drive and printer, then as 1. (HANG)

5. Disabled on-board chips like sound, legacy USB etc, then as 1. (HANG)

I've tried booting to the CD and doing a 'repair windows' but that comes back without problems.

The only other thing I could think of is that the graphics card is incompatible... but I don't have onboard VGA and I don't have another card just lying around.

I've never had a problem doing a clean Windows install. I'm really disappointed they're making it so difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions? I might have to just go back to Vista...

Installation Won't Reboot

Apr 18, 2009

I've been trying to install Windows 7 on a brand new computer. It's running RAID 0, and I'm using the latest drivers from my motherboard manufacturer.

Starting up the installation seems to work fine. It goes through the first phase of installation where I choose which partition I want to use, and it starts to copy files from the dvd, yada yada yada. After the "installing updates" section, a window pops up with the following message:

"Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation."

It then kicks me back to the start of installation. If I start the install again, it does the same thing. If I reboot and restart installation, also the same.

If I try a startup repair, I get a message saying that Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

I've tried this on two builds--7000 and 7077. Both have the same result.

When Shut Down Later, The Update Tries To Install And The Installation Hangs?

Mar 3, 2012

1) Download Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 (KB2647516)
2) PC crashes while making a restore point.3) Reboot - normal startup. But when I shut down later, the update tries to install and the installation hangs. After disc activity ceases, I shut down manually.4) Reboot - normal startup.At this point, I decided to use System Restore to clean out any residue from the failed install before downloading the patch again. Yup, you guessed it, I used the damaged restore point. D'oh!5) PC reboots as part of restore process - I get a startup error.6) Scan for problems - attempt repair - recieve the following error. "StartRep.exe Application Error. The instruction at 0x75bc9a45 referenced memory at 0x538e0e85. The memory could not be read"7) I try to restore to an earlier point, but the restore fails."System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. Unspecified error (0x80070020)"8) I close System Restore window and PC reboots automatically - normal startup.9) I recieve a notification from "Solve PC Issues" in the taskbar saying Microsoft Security Essentials is out of date and would I like to update?

So here I am. My PC appears to be running smoothly, but I don't know if there's any hidden damage in the system. I still want to clear out any residue from the failed install before I download the patch again, but now I'm wary of using System Restore. Also, the MSE update notification has me puzzled - the last restore point I tried to restore to preceeded an MSE definitions update, but that restore failed (didn't it?) and anyway, I don't normally recieve definitions update notifications from "Solve PC Issues". This las left me unsure where my system is at restore point-wise right now.

Windows 7 Installation Hangs Before Final Set-up TSage

Feb 3, 2010

My Dad is having problems upgrading to Windows 7 from the original Vista installation on his Medion MD8833 PC, using a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Edition disk. He first tried the upgrade route from Vista and this seemed to go OK, until after the second or third reboot it would get to a point and then freeze at a blank screen, with the mouse cursor still visible. If left for a long period of time, the PC appears to go into sleep mode. Attempts to reboot at this point make it look like Windows 7 has been installed, at least partially, as it'll go through the usual Windows 7 load-up splash screens but he's unable to get to the part of the process where you have to enter your Windows 7 serial key or start setting up user accounts etc. He's tried F8 and booting into Safe Mode and various other modes but had no success here either. This often results in being told the installation process has not completed and attempts to revert to Vista are started. He's even resorted to wiping the hard drive completely (inc. recovery partition) and doing a fresh install, but has exactly the same problems.

Reboot Before Installation Is Complete?

Jun 9, 2010

I have attempted to install Windows 7 a couple of times now (with different copies each time) and I keep getting the same problem:Everything goes very smoothly for the most part. It finishes the installation, and then goes to reboot. When it attempts to load up Windows 7 the first time, I get the black screen that asks what mode to start windows in (Safe Mode, Start Normally, etc) and I choose start normally. It then brings up the Win 7 startup screen, but pops up with an error that explains that the computer was rebooted unexpectedly and the install did not complete.From this point, all I can do is click the "ok" button (the only option given in the dialog box) which just restarts the computer. If I just let it go and don't touch anything, it brings me back to the exact same message. This happens infinitely. My only other option is to boot from CD again, which lets me start the install all over again. But this still just results in the same error. I ended up just re-installing XP so that I could try and find a fix for the issue.

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my laptop through a USB key, but so far I've been unsucessful. What's been happening is that everything goes fine until the installer needs to reboot itself, then the computer reboots, but installation process begins again from the beginning. No error messages or anything like that. I've begun the installation process 3 times now, each time the installer thinks it is installing a new copy.

For reference, I have an IBM Thinkpad T43, and I'm installing Windows 7 Professional.

Continuous Reboot After Installation

Nov 7, 2009

I up graded my lifebook to Windows 7 and have been blown away, so much so that I decided I would kill two birds with one stone with my old Toshiba.

It is an M40 Satellite with a 56GB HD, 1,66mhz processor and 1GB Ram,

I managed to clear enough space to install windows 7 (I have been unable too as it was configure to run on a server I no longer have)

The installation went well, or at least it looked as though it did, since the install and the last reboot in the installation proccess it has been in a continuous boot cycle, it comes back with a 'windows error' recovery.

I have tried starting it in every mode available and I still have nothing. I have tried a reinstall with both XP and Windows 7 and setting the Bios to boot from the DVD Rom.

I have eve gone as far as to get DBAN Nukem to clear the HD and still it will not recognise anything from the DVD Rom.

Have anyaone had a similar experience and can anyone shed any light? I am getting close to tossing it in the trash!.

Cq61 Clean Install Hangs At Competing Installation

Dec 19, 2012

My daughters CQ61 required a clean install after repair. Windows 7 jus goes through the normal install process and hangs at completeing installation. I'm not a Noob but not a Geek either. I can only assume the drive is fine as it is running fine in the T400 IMB i am using now. Now here is the strange bit..... When i was just starting out i to had a CQ61 and it too needed a clean install and it did the same for months with friends in th know looking and trying to. In the end i send off for the factory software discs and tey went on straight away with win7 working fine. It was literally restored to new. I passed on said disks when i sold said CQ61 adising the guy never to go down the road i had. Now the software discs are no longer available from HP and There is none on torrents anywhere. I cannot accept that this is the only way to install clean install. If it was that critical to have the discs they would send them out with the new machine. So thats muti attempts by multiple people on 2 identical machines presenting the same hang. One was solved with the Sowfwaredisks provided by HP and are no longer available. Should have copied them i know but never thought i would be looking down the same barrel of the same gun.

Windows 7 Pro 64 Hangs During Installation On Intel S5520HCT Server Board

But when I install Windows 7 Pro 64 to 50GB partition on the SATA drive, or to a single partition SSD ... the system hangs after the final reboot right after "Updating Registry" and "Starting Services" during the "Completing Installation" phase. The next input should be username and computer name ... but it never gets to that.

I have minimum hardware attached ... disabled networking in BIOS ... and tried with a number of different memory configurations ... etc .. etc ... but still the same result .. and I am now totally clueless. I even tested all my hardware on a Tyan S7025 board ... and there it installs without any issues.

I recently encountered windows 7x64 installation error, where i could not select disk partition to install. ( i formatted and deleted all of the partitions for a clean install). But somehow after running the memory diagnosis i was able to go through the installation. But during the installation on the second time it restarts, my computer gets a black screen when starting.

i cannot access the post screen menu or the recovery option( it is however possible to access the same thing via booting through the USB and selecting the recovery option instead of installing). Also the memory diagnosis tool does not work any more giving an error. The bios options are as follows:

MAIN : Serial ATA [Hard Disk]
Serial ATA [ATAPI CDROM]
Advanced: PCI Latency timer [64]
Legacy USB support [enabled]
AHCI Mode [endabled]

Windows 7 Ultimate / RAID 0 Installation - Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device

Jun 29, 2010

I can't install my Windows Ultimate 64 bit edition on my RAID 0 Western Digital 500GB hdd's because on the boot screen my computer keeps telling me to "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device", I've done both those instructions, rebooted, reinserted, all of it, no solution. I made sure my boot priority is the drive first, and raid drives after. Still nothing. But this is the interesting part, last time I fixed this problem by using my previous computers dvd drive to install instead of the blu ray, it installed and everything was right with the world.

But I have since then thrown out the old DVD drive, and now have nothing to install with. So what I did in the past hour was used a freinds DVD drive to install and it did not work. When my System Config, is set to RAID, it calls both my blu ray and his dvd drive, ATAPI CD, when in IDE, it calls my blue ray a blue ray and his dvd drive a dvd drive. I simply want to do a clean(custom) install of my windows 64 bit on my two RAID 0 HDDs, I've checked the boot priority, I've put both hdds in RAID0 and I've also used someone elses dvd dive to try and install.
