Windows 7 Pro X64 Hangs On Reboot, But Not On Shutdown?

Dec 8, 2010

Windows 7 Professional x64 edition is installed on a computer. During the installation, every time it went to restart the system would hang immediately; I had to do a hard reboot to continue the installation.Now Windows 7 is installed, and still hangs on reboot. When I choose Restart, the system shows the shutdown screen, goes black, and hangs. After some time waiting it never reboots and I never see the BIOS screen. However, if I choose "shutdown", it works perfectly.Also, when I force it to reboot, the system does NOT give me the message that it wasn't shut down correctly. I've reinstalled the system twice. All drivers are installed correctly, and Windows is completely up to date. I even updated the BIOS to the current version.

Windows 7 Hangs On Shutdown?

Feb 29, 2012

I have been having this random problem where my computer fails to shutdown every time. I know it is a general question but I have no idea why this happens. The only thing I remember changing was my sound card, but it is disabled in the device manager so I don' think that is the issue.Is there any way I can log events to see why it is crashing?

[CRASH] Windows 7 Hangs On Shutdown?

Mar 26, 2011

I just bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad T400. This is my 5th Thinkpad. It is a 2767-P1U. It is running Windows 7. I have the Lenovo drivers installed and have upgraded them to the latest available. I have also got Norton Anti-Virus 2011 and Office 2007 Professional. Windows is fully updated as well.The processor is: Core 2Duo T9400 with 2GB Memory.I am having issues getting the machine to shut down from the "Start > Shutdown" command. It continues to the shut down splash screen and has the rotating circle "hourglass" and stays that way. There appears to be little to no hard drive activity and it just sits there. After about 5 minutes of waiting, I am forced to use the actual power button to hard shut down the system.In order to investigate possible causes to this problem I began by determining what programs are running at start up in MSCONFIG. Aside from a few IBM applications, Windows and Norton services nothing seems to be in there that should cause any issues.

I checked the Event Viewer and can see that there seems to be some issues with "miniport" drivers from AMD. I thought this may have something to do with the video drivers as they are ATI (now AMD) and removed the extra Catalyst stuff and left the drivers. No change.I removed the Anti-Virus software completely. No Change.I tried disabling the network adapters, including Wireless. No change.One thing is certain. If I start the computer and sign into windows and then immediately click Start>Shutdown, it goes down in 10 seconds. Is this a power management driver issue? A video driver issue still? Some other "miniport" issue? Something I can't see?

Windows 7 Shutdown Causes Reboot.

Aug 6, 2010

I've got a problem with shutting down Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit version, I have read through all the posts about windows restarting when shutdown is pressed or the off button is pressed on the desktop PC. I have gone into BIOS and altered the restart in event of system failure, and also done the same on My Computer in advanced settings but none have worked.I have done a check on Microsoft's website to check all the hardware and software too, and the results were all clear. Apart from Adobe Photoshop 3, when I installed this program for some reason I was unable to get an internet connection. And I had to swap my Panda Internet Security for Windows Security Essentials, which I have found out since is better than most of the top brands that you pay for; and it is free to all those people who have got the genuine system from Microsoft.I have all the latest updates for the software and drivers too, also done a full scan of the PC including the two external hard drives that I have connected to the PC.

Reboot After Shutdown / Only On Windows 7

Sep 30, 2012

I have a problem that has been driving me crazy for a while. After a power cut, my pc started booting itself back up again after completely shutting down (2-3 secs) from Windows 7. I'm also running Windows 8 and this shuts down no problem so after months of putting up with it I re-installed Window 7 and the problem disappeared - pc shut down fine and stayed shut down.This was about 2 weeks ago and everything had been fine until another power failure today which has seen the problem return, again only in Windows 7. I have tried everything I have found trawling the forums for others with a similar problem, including disabling wake-on LAN in bios, updating bios, unchecking 'automatic restart' under system failure in startup and recovery options and changing the value of PowerdownAfterShutdown from '0' to '1'/'1' to '0' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon

The effects of the power cuts definitely seem to be causing these symptoms as both times now this problem has started immediately afterwards. I'm also thinking it's something that should be fixable within Windows 7 since Windows 8 still shuts down without any problems. I really don't want to have to do another re-install, especially since the problem is likely to come back the next time the power goes off.

Windows Does Not Reboot After Each Time Shutdown

Nov 7, 2012

It makes several months am using Windows 7 Professional on my Dell Studio XPS 1640 (it's a 64bit system). It was working fine and I was happy with it. It makes some weeks now that after each time I shut down, when I turn on again, it boots up to where the 4 coloured logo appears and then am left with a dark screen with only the cursor. I once waited for nearly 1 hour, nothing changed. The users screen never appeared.

I had to turn off manually, and when I turn it on again, it tell me that windows failed to restart.... and am left with these 2 options: >start Windows Normally(I went back to square 1 when I tried this) >Startup Repair.

The automatic system repair did not find any problem, I had to use the system recovery for which I had to choose a previous date in time to which I want the computer to reboot. Some times it works, sometimes I have to do it again and change the date.

When I hibernate the laptop, there is no problem when I turn it on again. But when I shut down or restart the laptop, it boots up to the "starting windows" screen with the windows logo and I have to turn it off manually.

It is causing me a lot of problem, I cannot install any program, each time I have to reinstall my printer.

PC Hangs On Black Screen During Shutdown - Fresh Install Windows 7 SP1

Oct 17, 2012

I recently got a PC that my office was getting rid of. The PC was in great shape and I was told it worked fine when they gave it to me. They ripped out the hard drive and gave me the machine. As soon as I got it, I put a brand new 2Tb Seagate HDD in. I also replaced the existing RAM (2x1Gb sticks) with 2x 2Gb sticks with the memory speed to match my motherboard. Finally I swapped out the ATI Radeon HD2900XT with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 460. There was a sound card (PCI) I removed as well as a redundant firewire port I unhooked from the Mobo. I then booted and peformed a fresh install of Windows 7 32bit Pro. Everything seemed to be going fine... until I tried to shut down. Windows would freeze on the Shutting Down screen. I mean freeze because the spinning circle would stop and the entire machine was unresponsive.

I read online that pre-Service Pack 1 Windows 7 didn't like multi-core processers and would have issues shutting down, so I updated to SP1 (along with a bunch of other updates). Now when I try to shut down, the Shutting Down screen disappears and the signal to the monitor ends, however the machine stays on. I can hear the fans running and see the lights to the PCI cards still on. Once again I have no option but to hold the power button until it shuts down. One extra note I double checked every driver and they are all up to day. Also when I boot in Safe Mode the PC shuts down fine and I have no problem restarting, just shutting down...

Explorer.exe Hangs On Shutdown?

Nov 10, 2010

One of the computers in the office where I work hangs when the user shuts down in the evening. The error dialog says there are two processes still running, and the title bar of the dialog says "explorer.exe error". The message in the dialog says something like "The instruction at "0xXXXXXXXX" referenced memory at "0xXXXXXXXX", The memory could not be "written. Click OK to close." There is an OK button and when you click it, the computers finishes it's shutdown with no further hang up. Windows explorer is the stuck process shown. I've done a little research on it and some of the suggestions are to clear the temporary internet files, which I did, but that didn't help and I wonder if they were thinking IE and not the Windows explorer which is different.

Netbook Hangs After Reboot?

Apr 18, 2012

my ASUS Eeepc 1015 netbook, running Windows 7 starter, hangs after i try to restart -- mainly after an update.

after acknowledging the restart, the screen would go dark and hang. i would have to hold down the power button to shut it off, then i would start it up manually.

as a side issue probably related to the netbook... often when the netbook goes into screensaver mode the mousepad doesn't respond when i want to get out of said screensaver mode. i have to hit a button in order for the netbook to "wake". once in a blue moon, even that doesn't work, and i have to reboot.

Installation Hangs BEFORE 1st Reboot

Oct 31, 2009

This is a nightmare, after solving the first problem I had, where the installation gets stuck in 'Copying windows files' (I had to disable the floppy disk from the BIOS, even not having floppy disk physically).

Now all the files are copied and extended properly, but when showing the screen saying that the system is going to reboot, the installation freeze. It never reboot.

Then I do a hardware reboot, Windows 7 loads ok, but in the screen that reads "Completing installation..." the process never ends.

I've seen (through shift+F10) that the log file 'setupapi.dev.log' reads something like it is looking for a driver for a pci.. but don't know what it means.

Computer Hangs On Reboot After Instalation

Nov 19, 2009

I have Win XP installed on my PC and I have tried several times to do a dual boot with Windows 7 RC and after each attempt I have put my system back to normal by reformatting the Windows 7 partition with Acronis Disk doctor and reimaging XP Pro with Acronis true Image.

What happens is I go through the install and the green progress bar goes pretty well right across the screen and all the stages are checked of as they are done then I get the screen that the computer wants to reboot and I let it time out and when it starts up again I get "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" the first time I left it because I didn't want to reinstall again after some time with the PC still at that screen I pressed a key and nothing happened.

Another time I pressed the key and it wanted to do another installation so I let it do a repair and when it rebooted the same thing so I tried again and removed the disk when it rebooted and when the PC gets through POST I get a black screen with a blinking cursor that I cant type anything to.

I would imagine that if I can get past this point it would be where I type in the product key.

I have tried this disk on another computer in Ubuntu with virtual box and it installed ok. I have the boot order correct I have recently installed XP pro on it. I am using a PS2 keyboard that was OK for the XP install and I can get into Bios OK.

Of course, when reloading I get the message that Windows shut down unexpectedly and a 'solution will be searched' but nothing every happened as far as that goes.I made a new profile but it did the same thing when working in that.At approximately the same time as this began, I lost my 'start menu' list, and although I can 'attach items to the list, upon reboot, they disappear.

Slow Startup / Shutdown - No Auto Refresh And Update Hangs

Oct 3, 2010

I just installed a retail copy of win 7 on my laptop and have been experiencing some issues. At first everything worked fine but out of the blue my desktop/folders have not been auto-refreshing. Whenever I try to delete or create a new folder I have to manually refresh to the folder in order to view it. When shutting down my laptop it takes 5+ minutes and when my desktop is loading after booting up the laptop it takes several minutes for everything to load and for the win 7 chime.

Finally, it won't allow me to update. When I try to use the windows updater it hangs for a while on "creating restoring point" (which may be normal) but then permanently hangs on installing update 1/16 at 0%. If I try canceling the update nothing happens and even when I try to shut down the laptop it attempts to install the updates but hangs on update 1/16.

From researching these issues I've realized that the auto-refresh problem is not uncommon and has something to do with a network. This may be unrelated but these problems only started to occur when I was transferring pictures via a USB stick.

"Completing Installation" After 1st Reboot Hangs

Nov 19, 2009

I would very much like to try out Windows 7, since all I read about it is very positive. I am trying to install the 64 bit version on my computer, but no matter what I do, it keeps freezing at "Completing installation" after the first reboot. For a minute or so the dots-animation is still working and I can move the mouse, but after that, it just completely freezes.

Some background information:

- I have a Asus P5K-E/WiFi mainboard with the latest BIOS installed (also tried an older BIOS);

- My processor (Intel Q6600) is overclocked to 3 GHz, but I have also tried the install at stock speed (2.4 GHz);

- The jMicron controller is disabled;

- SATA mode is AHCI. This is working fine with my Windows XP installation;

- My video card is a Radeon HD2600 card with 2 DVI outputs, both connected to a monitor. I also tried connecting just one monitor, without success;

- It doesn't matter whether I install from DVD or USB flash disk, the exact same thing happens;

- I have a USB soundcard (Digidesign MBox I), but disconnecting it during installation doesn't help;

- I use a Logitech USB mouse/keyboard set;

- I have two DSP cards installed in my PC, a UAD-2 and a SSL Duende, both working fine with XP.

I'm puzzled. Anyone have a clue?

I have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.

Windows 7 Won't Reboot And Cannot Reboot From DVD?

Apr 20, 2012

My computer hard drive crashed a week ago and most of my back-ups went with the system. So, I got a new 500 GB drive and have been re-installing everything from scratch. I started with a clean install of Windows XP (service pack 2), which took forever to get all the up-dates done. Then I upgraded to Windows 7 and did the up-dates for that. I didn't make a recovery disk at this point because I wanted to get everything installed first.Unfortunately, the last time I went to reboot it failed. When I power-up the computer it stalls out on the Dell BIOS screen. I can't get into Safe Mode, Setup, or the Boot Menu because my keyboard and mouses are not working. They are both USB and none of my USB ports are working. (Also, I have not PS/2 ports on my machine.).
