Laptop Hangs After Closing Lid Requires Reboot?
Nov 24, 2011
After upgrading to Windows 7 everything worked fine for about 3 months. I had it set to sleep when I close the lid nnd it worked well. But suddenly it began getting pernickity. When I opened the lid, about 15 - 20 seconds later the computer totally froze and I had to reboot. Of course, when reloading I get the message that Windows shut down unexpectedly and a 'solution will be searched' but nothing every happened as far as that goes.I made a new profile but it did the same thing when working in that.At approximately the same time as this began, I lost my 'start menu' list, and although I can 'attach items to the list, upon reboot, they disappear.

Very often the sound on my system seems to get "locked up" after listening to music (MediaMonkey) or watching a movie (VLC or WMP) and there after when I attempt to play a video or listen to music, the progress bar won't move and videos won't play.
It's as though the resources lock on one program and aren't released. I suspect it might be due to my using an M-audio Audiophile 2496.
The only way to release it is to reboot. When I do so whatever has it locked releases in time to play the closing chime. After reboot the sound works normally - for a while.
Oh yeah, closing the program (MediaMonkey or whatever) doesn't have any effect.

I have been recently experiencing a strange crash that happens on my computer frequently. So far, in the ~10 times it has occured over the last 3 days, it has crashed mostly during my gaming time - until now. I was writing this when it happened again. Basically, all sound starts a loop and nothing works at all. I initially thought it was overheating in my computer so I ran some temp. checks while playing games and nothing in my computer was breaking 75 deg. C, so I ruled that out. I ran anti-spyware and anti-virus - nothing.
The only changes my computer has made since I noticed the crashes are the following: installed a few programs, added 3 400gb hard drives to my computer, and swapped out my PSU from a Kingwin 730w (cheapo) to an Antec HCG-750w, a much nicer version. I doubt it's any of the programs, most are games, and I'm not leaning towards the HDDs since there is no information on them at the moment. Could it have to deal with my power supply? Nothing is overheating, as I stated before, but maybe something isn't fully plugged in? I have no idea.
On a side note - when I added those hard drives, I remember booting up and not getting any boot. I opened my computer back up and I noticed I had bumped the power cord on the boot drive, plugged it back in, and rebooted. Everything went fine from there..

Ok, so I am going to try to explain this as thorougly as possible while trying not to sound like an idiot in the process. I am by no means computer savvy so anyone that has any advice will more than likely need to talk to me like a 5th grader. I am ok with that. Since installing a Windows Update about a month ago, my screen will randomly lock up. At times it will clear itself after a couple of seconds and state something to the effect that "display driver amd has stopped working and recovered." Other times it will stay frozen for about 10 minutes and then will start functioning properly again. More often than not though, it will stay frozen indefinitely and require a hard reboot. This happens during mundane activities. No extreme gaming going on. Generally it is while just browsing the net. It tends to happen more often to my wife who uses it during the day to work through a VPN. I don't believe there is any correlation though. I have read multiple forums on the web and have tried several things, from cleaning the registry to uninstalling the driver software and reinstalling it in safe mode. The latter seemed to work last night but today my wife started having the same issue again.

When I go to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsPerformance Information and Tools and click "Rate this computer," it crashes before it's done.Desktop Window Manager Sessions Manager is disabled, not running, and the option to start it is greyed out. sfc scannow didn't finish, so I ran it at boot (url) That gave me the error "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete." I rebooted into windows and then back to the disc several times and got the error each time. My computer does not have a pending.xml file. Since sfc scannow wasn't working, I tried to do a repair install (as described here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutoria [...] ml?ltr=R). I ran the compatibility check (by clicking "upgrade" after starting setup) on the windows 7 disk and it gave me this message: "Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing." Restarting, however, does not accomplish this. What can I do? It seems my main problem right now is finishing up whatever Windows thinks it needs to update on a reboot (I've rebooted many times since discovering the message.

I just tried sfc/scannow and I got the following message: There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and try sfc again.I'm thinking this repair pending is from the chldsk/r I completed previously. This is great, except when I reboot, the repair does not startup and the system just goes back to the Windows Error Recovery screen I had earlier. How do I get the repair to complete?

my ASUS Eeepc 1015 netbook, running Windows 7 starter, hangs after i try to restart -- mainly after an update.
after acknowledging the restart, the screen would go dark and hang. i would have to hold down the power button to shut it off, then i would start it up manually.
as a side issue probably related to the netbook... often when the netbook goes into screensaver mode the mousepad doesn't respond when i want to get out of said screensaver mode. i have to hit a button in order for the netbook to "wake". once in a blue moon, even that doesn't work, and i have to reboot.

This is a nightmare, after solving the first problem I had, where the installation gets stuck in 'Copying windows files' (I had to disable the floppy disk from the BIOS, even not having floppy disk physically).
Now all the files are copied and extended properly, but when showing the screen saying that the system is going to reboot, the installation freeze. It never reboot.
Then I do a hardware reboot, Windows 7 loads ok, but in the screen that reads "Completing installation..." the process never ends.
I've seen (through shift+F10) that the log file 'setupapi.dev.log' reads something like it is looking for a driver for a pci.. but don't know what it means.

Windows 7 Professional x64 edition is installed on a computer. During the installation, every time it went to restart the system would hang immediately; I had to do a hard reboot to continue the installation.Now Windows 7 is installed, and still hangs on reboot. When I choose Restart, the system shows the shutdown screen, goes black, and hangs. After some time waiting it never reboots and I never see the BIOS screen. However, if I choose "shutdown", it works perfectly.Also, when I force it to reboot, the system does NOT give me the message that it wasn't shut down correctly. I've reinstalled the system twice. All drivers are installed correctly, and Windows is completely up to date. I even updated the BIOS to the current version.

I have Win XP installed on my PC and I have tried several times to do a dual boot with Windows 7 RC and after each attempt I have put my system back to normal by reformatting the Windows 7 partition with Acronis Disk doctor and reimaging XP Pro with Acronis true Image.
What happens is I go through the install and the green progress bar goes pretty well right across the screen and all the stages are checked of as they are done then I get the screen that the computer wants to reboot and I let it time out and when it starts up again I get "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" the first time I left it because I didn't want to reinstall again after some time with the PC still at that screen I pressed a key and nothing happened.
Another time I pressed the key and it wanted to do another installation so I let it do a repair and when it rebooted the same thing so I tried again and removed the disk when it rebooted and when the PC gets through POST I get a black screen with a blinking cursor that I cant type anything to.
I would imagine that if I can get past this point it would be where I type in the product key.
I have tried this disk on another computer in Ubuntu with virtual box and it installed ok. I have the boot order correct I have recently installed XP pro on it. I am using a PS2 keyboard that was OK for the XP install and I can get into Bios OK.

I left my laptop on and had to leave so I simply shut the lid down. About 2 hours later, I lifted the lid and got only a black screen. I moved the mouse around to get it to come on but it would not. After about 5 tries on holding down the button in which to start up my laptop or turn off in this case, it finally turned off then I was able to turn it on and all was fine. I held it down for about 15 seconds. So, question is why wouldn't my laptop become active again when I opened the lid, etc?
Here are some of my specs.

I recently got a new monitor (samsung sync master s27b350), and when I connect it to my laptop (alienware m11x r2) it works perfectly fine through either vga or hdmi. Until I close the laptop's lid. Then the image on the external monitor either flickers or goes completely black (I have settings to 'do nothing' on lid close). All my drivers appear as up to date and working, and with the lid open, there is no flickering. I have tried several different cables of each hdmi and vga all with the same results.This didn't happen for the first 3 days with the new monitor, but then the problems started shortly after.

Just having a weird problem with Windows 7. When I am using earphones or my laptop speakers and then I close the lid on my laptop, it causes a great reduction in the volume of the sound output automatically.While the laptop lid is still open, the volume on all programs remains normal.However, when I close my laptop lid, it seems Windows automatically reduces the volume.Let's say I put the volume on my laptop to 40/100 units in the sound mixer. All programs I am using are set to use the volume the sound output device is using, so everything else is also at 40/100 units, including Media Player Classic.I am usually using Media Player Classic to play some FLAC music. I usually have earphones connected, but this issue recurs without them as well.
When I close my laptop, in about 2 seconds the sound volume will automatically reduce to 5/100 units in the Volume Mixer in the taskbar. This sound reduction also only applies to the program I am currently using to play music (e.g. MPC or iTunes, the two which I've tried so far).After re-opening my laptop, I check the Volume Mixer and it shows only MPC or iTunes sound output is reduced. The system device speakers will still be at 40/100 units volume.his is really frustrating, because I like to turn on some music,

I would very much like to try out Windows 7, since all I read about it is very positive. I am trying to install the 64 bit version on my computer, but no matter what I do, it keeps freezing at "Completing installation" after the first reboot. For a minute or so the dots-animation is still working and I can move the mouse, but after that, it just completely freezes.
Some background information:
- I have a Asus P5K-E/WiFi mainboard with the latest BIOS installed (also tried an older BIOS);
- My processor (Intel Q6600) is overclocked to 3 GHz, but I have also tried the install at stock speed (2.4 GHz);
- The jMicron controller is disabled;
- SATA mode is AHCI. This is working fine with my Windows XP installation;
- My video card is a Radeon HD2600 card with 2 DVI outputs, both connected to a monitor. I also tried connecting just one monitor, without success;
- It doesn't matter whether I install from DVD or USB flash disk, the exact same thing happens;
- I have a USB soundcard (Digidesign MBox I), but disconnecting it during installation doesn't help;
- I use a Logitech USB mouse/keyboard set;
- I have two DSP cards installed in my PC, a UAD-2 and a SSL Duende, both working fine with XP.
I'm puzzled. Anyone have a clue?

I have a new HP laptop with Win7 x64 installed on. When I close the laptop it should go to sleep mode, so when I would open it and turn it on, it should start normally. Instead, it gives me a message screen, where it asks if I want to start Windows in safe mode or start windows normally. It seems like the OS doesn't go to normal sleep mode, instead it crashes. When I click on the sound icon in the tray it takes very very long to open the master volume slider. Why is it processing so long for a simple thing like this?

I just started using a new Toshiba laptop. Trouble is, opening and closing programs and browsing is slower then I feel it should be. Pages that loaded in 5 seconds on my old machine are taking 10 seconds on this new one, and opening programs causes a good 5 second delay. Also, once a webpage has finally loaded, scrolling jumps rather than move smoothly. Multiple tabs cause quite a bit of hanging as well.
The machine doesn't seem to be under stress, no fans kicking in or anything like that. But it's just not as quick as it should be. I've disabled a lot of things on startup that weren't required, and even turned off transparency in case it was hogging resources. I run AVG antivirus and Comodo Firewall.

I have an Asus u56e laptop I got back in December 2011, and recently I did I clean reinstall of my system because it kept freezing and locking up while simply just browsing the web and listening to iTunes. I don't use this laptop for games, but after the clean install, I updated all my drivers, software, windows updates, etc. and I still get hangs and freezes that last 5 seconds to sometimes a full minute and all I'm doing is listening to music and browsing websites with maybe two or three tabs open in Firefox. I really have absolutely no idea what could be wrong so I came here seeking any kind of much needed help and assistance. I don't have a lot of programs installed and I don't run a lot of programs at once, just maybe one or two apps usually. My problem is I will be browsing on Firefox listening to music, then iTunes will hang for a few seconds and the music freezes, then Firefox freezes too sometimes for a few seconds also, then it goes back to normal, and this happens very very frequently to the point of frustration and I simply don't understand why a new clean laptop would have an issue such as this. Bad hard drive? Bloatware from Asus?Asus Laptop Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1, Intel Core i5 2.40GHz, 6.0GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS, HP G61-304NR laptop is auto rebooting over and over again. I have tried system recover from my recover disks - it did not work. I ordered system recovery disks from HP and had the recover disk reformat the Windows partition (I have a valid backup of this computer).Tried to boot in the following modes:
-Safe Mode
-Safe Mode w/Command Prompt
-Low Res Video
-Disable Driver Signing Enforcement
None of these things work. It appears that the problem may be associated with atipcie.sys driver. I assume this because the safe mode driver boot stops at disk.sys and the next driver that needs to load is atipcie.sys. At that point, the computer goes into windows and then reboots. I cannot get to a command prompt. I have tried to get to a command prompt by booting from the recover disk, by booting through safe mode with command prompt. I cannot get there. The laptop successfully gets through BIOS, and goes to Windows, but then it goes through some command screens (looks like scripts, cscript.exe), but then automatically reboots.
