Computer Won't Power On After Power Loss

Mar 17, 2012

My computer wouldn't shut down, even with holding in the power button, and so I just let it run out the battery. Then it wont turn on. I tried holding down the power button to clear out any charge that might be remaining. I have managed to get it back on, but I have to make a connection at the clip where you plug the power button ribbon into the mobo. Also, this is the second time I have had to do this. The computer works fine afterwards...or seems to anyway.

Computer Randomly Dies But No Power Loss

May 10, 2012

I had issues with my computer displaying symptoms of a faulty PSU. I was shutting down instantly whenever I ran intensive games for too long.Soon after those issues went away, I started getting random freezes, crashes, and BSODs. I finally tracked this down to a bad version of firmware on my SSD, and upgraded it by upgrading the firmware version, doing a 'secure erase', or something along those lines, as OCZ calls it, then installing a brand new copy of Windows 7.Everything went fine for a little bit. It's been 1-2 weeks or so since I upgraded the firmware.Over the past few days, I have noticed random ... near-shutdowns. Basically, my monitor was off, and my computer was unresponsive - but the lights and fans and what-not were on.I thought something tried to shut down my computer or something, and didn't think much of it. Maybe a weird Windows Update, iunno.Note: The hard reboot function on my computer (a tiny button near my power button) that usually works without issue does not work when this happens. My computer still has power, but it seems like it just... died. No monitor connection. No response whatsoever.A simple holding down of the power button and then pressing it again when it turns off seems to work, although the power up from that point takes a bit longer than normal.

Today, I have seen this first-hand 2 times. Just today. I was doing something, the sound started skipping - at which point my monitor disconnected, although for a few seconds after, I could still hear the guy I was talking to on Skype, and he could hear me. A few seconds and the sound dies down, and my comp is completely gone. Power still running as I already mentioned.Do note that this has happened both when I was running an intensive game and when I wasn't running much of anything - certainly nothing intensive.

I've already replaced my PSU, upgraded my SSD firmware, and reformatted my main HD (not data drive) and reinstalled Windows. I ran memtest a little while ago and it ran w/o issues, 2 passes, 0 fails.FYI, I've checked temperatures. My computer is not at all overheating.S This has been going on for months. I use this computer for gaming, programming, and work.

Edit: My computer just "died" again - for the third or fourth time today. I'd like to note that for 2-3 seconds right after this happens (i.e. right when my monitor goes dark and my computer stops being responsive), my fans get very loud - much louder then they normally would. After this, my fans go back to the normal volume level that they are usually at.The only thing notable in my Windows Event Viewer is that there was a generic, unexpected loss of power. It leads me to information about a "Kernel Power Event 41", with the following link:[URL]

Power Loss To Notebook Shows Loss Of Windows Activation?

Jan 15, 2013

I had a power loss while running on battery (it still showed power left, but suddenly shut down anyway) and when I restart, it reports that the Windows is not activated and Window is not genuine and system might be a victim of "counterfeiting."

Is this a virus (I have MSE on continuously and about once a week scan with Malwarebytes)? I have run 'sfc /scannow' with filtered output ('findstr /c: "[SR]" c:.....logsCBSCBS.log" and it appears as usual.

How can I lose my Windows activation?

Power Loss, And Windows Tools For Analyzing Possible Damage?

Jul 15, 2010

Today some maintenance personnel were working on my bathroom in my apartment. I stepped out to take care of some errands while they worked. I put my computer into sleep mode (NOT hibernation - Actually sleep mode). When I got home, I realized that all of the clocks were flashing "12:00" and my computer was powered off. When I talked to the maintenance crew, they said that they had encountered a problem in the bathroom and caused a short. This, in turn, tripped the breaker that my computer room was on, which they then reset. This means that my computer, at minimum, experienced a hard power loss while running. It may or may not have experienced a surge (!), though it is on a surge protector. And the surge protector did not have its safety lights lit to indicate a surge.

Unfortunately, since using the computer I'm noticing a lot of oddities. I played some TF2 to unwind, and for the first time ever it crashed. My Video Card got stuck in "uplocked/3D" mode. Web browsing was slower than I'm used to, and overall it seemed like the computer picked up a lot of 'chugging' where it hadn't before. Is there some method to diagnose the general health and well being of my computer in windows? Are there tools beyond CHKDSK that I can run to locate problems that may have occurred as a result of a power surge? I'm concerned that the power loss damaged my components significantly, and I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem or determine if it's all in my head.

Here are my specs, if that's important:

Windows 7 Pro x64
i7 core 920 CPU
eVGA x58 mobo
eVGA GTX 275 Video Card (197.13 drivers)
Corsair 850 W PSU
6 GB RAM

Windows 7 Blue Screen After Power Loss During Updates?

Jan 2, 2012

My computer was turned off during the update process and I am getting the blue screen. After launching the start-up repair I am told the problem cannot be solved although there is a patch preventing the system from starting. My registry files precede the date the problem occurred, I have tried to restore but there is no restore point, I cannot start in safe mode. I have launched bootrec.exe and ran FixMbrFixBoot and also RebuildBcd and none have worked. I know I will probably have to go the long way around and pull the data from my disc and do a clean install but just wondered if any of you Techsperts had a quicker fix so I can spend the rest of my life in awe at your magnificence?

Setting Can Change To Shut Off Power To USB Buses / When Power Off PC?

Jun 9, 2011

I use my PC for audio production and I have a few external controller devices that are USB powered, for example a midi keyboard. I recently had to build PC due to a theft....long story short after building the new PC I've noticed that my USB buses have continual power to these external devices after I've powered down the PC. My old windows 7 PC did not do this. Is there a setting I can change to shut off power to the USB buses when I power off the PC? Or is this a hardware issue?

Random Power Off / Power On / Reboot Events

May 2, 2012

Over the past 2 years my PC has been afflicted with random power off/power on/reboot events. It will go for months without these and then have multiples of the events in a day. (I had 8 of them 3 days ago.)I assume I have a hardware problem, but nothing has been found and I'm grasping at straws. The time between power off and power on is several seconds.I had assumed this rules out a software cause, but maybe I'm wrong. I know Windows can schedule a power off, but can it tell BIOS (or something) to power back on in a few seconds?I know blaming the power supply is a much more simple explanation, but then I'm left with explaining the intermittent nature of the failure.

Computer Shuts Down Right After Power Up?

Mar 6, 2012

I have 2 computers here. One is a E-Machines, and the other is a custom built. Both units as soon as you power them on, they go thru the boot up process, but anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds later, the unit turns off. I've tried swapping the ram and the power supply. I have disconnected the keyboard, monitor, mouse and speakers with no change. Both of them developed this problem over night. They do not stay booted up long enough to get into the setup or to even try booting from a DVD.

Computer Won't Power On After RAM Upgrade?

Nov 27, 2012

Today I got 2 new 4GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance Blue RAM to go with the 8GB I already have in my system (same RAM as well). After all 4 sticks were installed, my computer failed to power on properly. It would power on for about 5-6 seconds then shut off, and continuously try to start up again, only to shut back down. I did have a few minor overclocks in place so I went into BIOS and reset everything back to default, but the computer still refuses to power on with all 4 sticks in place. I've tried different combinations of the 4 sticks and they all work fine as long as all 4 aren't hooked up at the same time. My PSU is 650W if that helps. I really doubt 2 additional sticks of RAM is making much difference in power usage.

Note: As to why I need/want 16GB of RAM, I play around with Photoshop + do some video editing in After Effects and Premiere, and I found myself maxing out the 8GB I had rather easily.

Computer Power Cycles Every 3-5 Seconds?

Feb 23, 2012

My computer decided to shut down on me in the middle of playing a game a couple of weeks ago. Hardware shut down - no warning, nothing. This is always worrisome, but it was even worse because when I went to turn it back on, it failed to post, stayed on for a couple seconds, then shut itself down. It repeated this cycle many times until I simply turned the power off on the PSU. I turned the power back on and it continued this cycle. Finally I just turned the power on the PSU off and left for the day. When I returned, I was able to boot the machine normally.About a week after that, I was once again playing EVE and the thing shut down on me and did the whole power cycle thing again. Remembering the fix from before, I turned the PSU off and left for the day. However, when I got back home, the problem persisted.

Currently, I am unable to get the computer to post on a regular basis with anything more than a single stick of ram (though it doesn't matter which stick and even then it's about a 25% chance). This includes removal of GPU, PCI cards, and HDD. Sometimes it WILL POST, but the Hard Drives are not detected, then then machine shuts down after about 30 seconds or so and returns to the power cycle mode.I cannot boot from my hard drive in my buddy's computer, but it is a much older AMD based system that originally had a 230w psu. I can however access it as a slave disk.I just replaced the PSU less than a year ago, and the graphics card about 18 months ago (an upgrade from an x1950pro, which blew the 550w PSU I had at the time).is the CPU temp sensor freaking out and shutting the machine down? Did the power supply go kaplooey (or about to)? Is my southbridge bad and causing all of the above (this is my #1 guess, as HDD's and PCI cards all cause major fail)?

Computer Won't Start After Power Bump

Dec 20, 2012

I have a Dell PC that won't start after a sudden power outage that lasted more than an hour. When the power came back on, I went to power on the PC. The monitor/mouse & keyboard are all plugged into the same power strip (which also shows a light indicating the power strip has power). They all have lights that come on, indicating they all have power except for the tower. The tower does not come on (not even the fans kick on), Although There is a small green light on the back of the tower that comes on, but no light on the front button when I push it in for power.

I have unplugged the monitor & plugged it into the same "slot" on the power strip that the tower was plugged into, to see if it was that particular plug slot was bad. The monitor did show a light, So i switched it back...Still no power to the tower. We just had the mother board replaced by professionals (Best Buy Geek Squad) 6 months ago...Are there any ideas out there? When it comes to computers, I know nothing in the technical Dept.... After reading extensively all the solutions that were givin to others on here with similar problems,.. I have checked to see if any of those could work for me...None i have read & tried Have worked...These are the things i have tried: I have unplugged the tower for hours, to see if it was "Hot", but that did nothing, so I guess that's not it. I checked to see if there were any "bulging/burst or leaking" capacitors on the mother board (there were none)...I checked to make sure the "RAMS" were secure & tight (they were secure)...
