Can't Start Up After Forced Shut Down During Update
Apr 12, 2012
First off, let me say that I realize that turn off my computer during the update configuration was a terrible idea.Anyway, there isn't much I can say besides that my computer just won't start up. I've tried safe mode, I've tried system restores, but they both failed. I'd supply you with crash logs, but I'm not entirely sure how.All attempts at a system restore failed and came up as an error, and when I tried to do a disk check, it said my disc was write protected.Let me know if there is any more information I can supply.

Recently I've been working in word and then suddenly the computer started to shutdown and install some update. After that it rebooted and restored everything (much like after hibernation). Why did this happen? Shouldn't I get some sort of info that the update requires the system to reebot and let me decide WHEN I want that to happen? Is it some new microsoft policy to do that?
My updates are set to automatically download and install.

I was transferring about 150gb of files into my external hard drive, and left it alone as I went on with my day. I came home to an error, I should've paid more attention but it said something about an I/O error, and the files stopped transferring (or seemed to have stopped). Everything was really slow, I couldn't even open task manager (It actually opened up a long while after I hit ctrl+shift+esc) I couldn't close any of my programs (I have visual paradigm, which took about 400k of memory, skype [70k], chrome [200k], and some other stuff.
I noticed svchost was 150k, but i don't know what that means. I finally closed all processes except for the file transfer screen, which said it was transferring but no numbers were changing. I hit cancel, waited. Could not safely remove hardware, it would not load the options. After about a half hour I gave up and force shut down my computer by holding the power button. I tried turning it back on immediately, with the external harddrive still attached. It froze at the windows start up screen, where it said Windows is Starting...
But there was no swirly balls moving around if you know what I mean, it just had the text. Tried restarting again, same thing. Tried restarting and opening ubuntu, and it froze at the purple screen. Tried restarting again with the harddrive recovery, and it froze at a black screen, but I could still see my mouse and move it around. Restarted it again and now it brings up some text with PXE, media not plugged in insert a device and hit a key, something like that. I'm afraid of turning it on again, so I'm leaving it off for a while.

1) Download Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 (KB2647516)
2) PC crashes while making a restore point.3) Reboot - normal startup. But when I shut down later, the update tries to install and the installation hangs. After disc activity ceases, I shut down manually.4) Reboot - normal startup. At this point, I decided to use System Restore to clean out any residue from the failed install before downloading the patch again. Yup, you guessed it, I used the damaged restore point. D'oh!5) PC reboots as part of restore process - I get a startup error.6) Scan for problems - attempt repair - recieve the following error. "StartRep.exe Application Error. The instruction at 0x75bc9a45 referenced memory at 0x538e0e85. The memory could not be read"7) I try to restore to an earlier point, but the restore fails."System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. Unspecified error (0x80070020)"8) I close System Restore window and PC reboots automatically - normal startup.9) I recieve a notification from "Solve PC Issues" in the taskbar saying Microsoft Security Essentials is out of date and would I like to update?
So here I am. My PC appears to be running smoothly, but I don't know if there's any hidden damage in the system. I still want to clear out any residue from the failed install before I download the patch again, but now I'm wary of using System Restore. Also, the MSE update notification has me puzzled - the last restore point I tried to restore to preceeded an MSE definitions update, but that restore failed (didn't it?) and anyway, I don't normally recieve definitions update notifications from "Solve PC Issues". This las left me unsure where my system is at restore point-wise right now.

I tried to shut down my laptop, the "Installing update, do not shut down or power off your computer" screen appears but my battery died during the update. And now when I startup the "Launch start up repair" appears and when i click it, I get stuck on a blue flower wallpaper screen thing and nothing appears. All i can see is the wallpaper and the mouse cursor.

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit
So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!
I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.
I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.
I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

I have an Acer Aspire one netbook that's 3 months old running on Windows 7. Around 3 weeks ago it started getting stuck on the shut down screen, and then it wouldn't shut down or restart from the start menu. This meant I had to remove the battery or hibernate the netbook when I wasn't using it. I fixed this so it would shut down by doing a system restore from a previous restore point. However after a week it's gone back to not shutting down from the start menu. Acer told me to do a complete system restore, but I'd rather not because I need all of my files for my uni work.

I'm at my whit's end with this. My PC shuts down fine but hangs on restart. It does this is both safe and normal mode. It appears to hang right before the HD would get turned off. The SHUTTING DOWN screen proceeds fine and the HD stops it's activity, the screen goes black (the HD light stays) and it just hangs there. Pressing the RESET button on the PC starts it up fine. If I am restarting from some utility (for example when installing Windows) it can hang with the RESTARTING WINDOWS screen.

If I shut down my machine it can only start after a startup repair. However, if I hibernate it starts normally. What this means therefore is that I am no longer able to install new updates successfully especially those that require a shut down for a complete successful installation. What should I do?

I was using my Dell laptop today. All of a sudden the OS just shut everything down quickly and shut down. There was no error or anything like that. It just shut down.
Upon booting, I was given a screen to enter the bitlocker recovery key. I tracked it down and entered it into the laptop. The laptop then tried to boot, but blue screened. In typical MS fashion, the blue screen showed for about 1/352352th of a second so I couldn't get any real information about the error.
I tried the boot system recover option that the os presented. I tried the option to recover from the last recovery point or to recover the other way. Each time the system booted back to the same problem.

I was on vacation for 1 month and after that my PC suddenly did a check to 1 of my HDD's (Samsung 1000GB HDD - My storage drive that sometimes I just don't see in system anymore and system restore fixes the problem usually). After that check, my PC worked fine whole day, but the next day i Turn it on (After installing about 7-8 Important windows updates) I don't see my Samsung HDD, So I thought it's a usual problem that I have, I notice that the only restore points I have are from year 2011... That didn't suit me and I thought why do I have restore points so far behind ? But then I notice 1 more important update if I shut down my PC, So I thought it might fix the problem and maybe create another restore point for me. That's where I shut down my PC and start it again. Now it takes a lot longer in my BIOS and I notice that it doesn't detect any of my HDD's and asks for boot disk after that. Now I'm clueless what to do, since the problem I had was only with 1 HDD that had lesser rpm than my other one that i use for my system (Also it was the cheapest 1000GB HDD that I have seen long time ago and seems to have a lot of problems)
OS Windows 7 32-bit RAM 3GB (1GB + 2GB) Mobo (I don't know exact module but i write what was written in BIOS) Intel I945 for 945GZM-S2 F2 also i Know its from GIGABYTE HDD's: 1x 120GB 7200rpm with 3 partitions, 1x SAMSUNG 1TB (1000GB) HDD with 5400rpm CPU Intel Dual core 2.00GHZ
I haven't tried anything much other than pressing delete key and configuring BIOS... they were set to default nothing helped there + It doesn't detect multiple HDD's. the PSU is new and probably had same Voltage or even more I don't remember exactly which one of those.

My PC will not shutdown properly. When I try to shutdown a screen will appear saying 'Sidebar.exe' asking me to force the shutdown. All of the Gadgets disappear but it only leaves one Gadget, the currency gadget on the desktop and then the forced shutdown screen appears asking me to force shutdown. I think the Sidebar.exe stops responding at shutdown. This started to happen not long ago and happens everytime. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. Now not only the currency gadget, it seems other gadgets too. I had done some checks on my own like closing the gadgets and see if it happens, and it still happens.

I've just ran into a problem with my Sony Vaio laptop. It froze when I was using it, and I was forced to force it to shut down. Now i can't boot into Windows anymore. I've tried starting the recovery, but it just got stuck there too. Even The safe mode does not work. It hangs when it's loading the avgidseh.sys driver, but when searching for this it seemed that this is not avg related. The most important thing is to have my files back, but I don't want to buy a case for the HDD and reformat if there could be another solution. I've also ran a memory scan and it reported no errors, then booted into recovery mode which then hang again. Currently I'm leaving it trying to start up the whole night, but it's already taking 30 minutes at startup animation...

I have had more than my share of instances requiring a forced restart, because of one thing or another locking up the system, so that none of the usual methods of restarting are available. I think that I already know the answer, but nevertheless, I will ask...is there any hardware/software that can perform a NORMAL restart on a frozen system?

I got this dell computer from a friend so I have no windows cd. It's always worked perfect until now. This morning I saw it was updating itself when I turned it on, took long. It worked fine so I ignored it. In the middle of nothing it suddenly restarted and now it says windows can't start. When I try to repair it gets stuck loading files, and when I go to the advanced boot options, it won't start on safe mode or with Last Known Good Configuration. I always end up in the sane place, stuck loading files. i know next to nothing, so I'm afraid I'll kill it if I continue trying.

About a month ago I replaced my hard drive on my laptop. After reinstalling Windows 7 from some recovery disks I had I went through the process of updating the OS. After about a week of the computer being fine I went through another batch of windows updates and windows would not start. It kept going into the system repair which would never finish and bring me to the recovery manager. I can't do a system restore because my computer keeps telling me I have no recovery points. Even though I checked and I did have recovery points before this problem. The only thing I have been able to do is a factory reset. I have done it 3 times so far and each time after about a week this problem happens again. I'm not exactly sure which update it is but I do know that it an update after the SP1 update.

I have a Windows 7 laptop bought less than a year ago which is experiencing some weird symptoms. On startup, the login screen comes up rather quickly, but takes about 10-15mins to load Windows, eventually landing me in a temporary profile. The computer seems to freeze when using video after ~15 minutes of viewing also. The stress has lead to at least one BSOD, which I couldn't obtain fast enough. Every attempt to go into the event viewer freezes the computer if let run enough, with loading bars realted to "snap-in" not functioning correctly. The same occurs in safe mode, with windows taking even longer to run and flat out freezing the computer upon trying to open the event viewer.Occasionally, and in the same event of the BSOD, I can hear a clicking inside the machine, which I believe but cannot be sure is the hard-drive. I want to check this on the event viewer but cannot open it.I want to attempt to re-install windows but have lost the disc. I know of other ways to get around this but want to try all available options before doing this. This issue very much sounds to be hardware related anyway, but being unable to view the event viewer I cannot pin down this error. I have MSE on the computer with scans being done in safe and normal modes which nothing found.
