I tried to shut down my laptop, the "Installing update, do not shut down or power off your computer" screen appears but my battery died during the update. And now when I startup the "Launch start up repair" appears and when i click it, I get stuck on a blue flower wallpaper screen thing and nothing appears. All i can see is the wallpaper and the mouse cursor.

Ever since then my system will hang either on logging off or shutting down.I have tried making a new user (No Help)it hangs in safe mode also.I also do not have a list of prior updates in control panel since this problem. The system works fine other than that.

My laptop crashed the other day after a Windows update. To make a long story short it would not boot up. I tried several things to no avail. System restore disc did not work. At this point I thought the hard drive was fried. Finally I stuck the the Windows 7 companion disk and got the system to boot I can tell all my files are there somewhere due to amount of memory taking up on the hard drive. Anyways my main problem it is now asking for the product key although I have 29 days which unfortunately I cannot find. Laptop in question is a Lenovo G550. Where do I go from here? Do I have to purchase a new key? I've been using the laptop since and it seems to be working properly as far as i can tell.

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit
So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!
I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.
I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.
I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

First off, let me say that I realize that turn off my computer during the update configuration was a terrible idea.Anyway, there isn't much I can say besides that my computer just won't start up. I've tried safe mode, I've tried system restores, but they both failed. I'd supply you with crash logs, but I'm not entirely sure how.All attempts at a system restore failed and came up as an error, and when I tried to do a disk check, it said my disc was write protected.Let me know if there is any more information I can supply.

1) Download Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 (KB2647516)
2) PC crashes while making a restore point.3) Reboot - normal startup. But when I shut down later, the update tries to install and the installation hangs. After disc activity ceases, I shut down manually.4) Reboot - normal startup. At this point, I decided to use System Restore to clean out any residue from the failed install before downloading the patch again. Yup, you guessed it, I used the damaged restore point. D'oh!5) PC reboots as part of restore process - I get a startup error.6) Scan for problems - attempt repair - recieve the following error. "StartRep.exe Application Error. The instruction at 0x75bc9a45 referenced memory at 0x538e0e85. The memory could not be read"7) I try to restore to an earlier point, but the restore fails."System Restore failed while mounting the registry from the restore point. Unspecified error (0x80070020)"8) I close System Restore window and PC reboots automatically - normal startup.9) I recieve a notification from "Solve PC Issues" in the taskbar saying Microsoft Security Essentials is out of date and would I like to update?
So here I am. My PC appears to be running smoothly, but I don't know if there's any hidden damage in the system. I still want to clear out any residue from the failed install before I download the patch again, but now I'm wary of using System Restore. Also, the MSE update notification has me puzzled - the last restore point I tried to restore to preceeded an MSE definitions update, but that restore failed (didn't it?) and anyway, I don't normally recieve definitions update notifications from "Solve PC Issues". This las left me unsure where my system is at restore point-wise right now.

I have a Dell XPS1530 laptop and lately, I have been experiencing issues with shutting the system down. I have Windows 7 loaded onto it (32-bit) which I installed shortly. What happens is this: I will turn the laptop on to do some work - that can range from transferring music from iTunes to my phone, working in Microsoft Word, or using Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator. I will work on something anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours and when I finish up, I close all of the programs before I go to shutdown the machine.
I click the Windows button in the lower-left of my screen and select "Shutdown" but nothing happens. I will wait up to 15 minutes and still Nothing. If I try and open a program like Firefox it won't open after I've selected "Shutdown." It's like the machine is stuck on something. Also, I tried running my virus software to see if there was a problem, but it got stuck around 89% done and just sat there for 12 hours before I told it to stop.

I was using my Dell laptop today. All of a sudden the OS just shut everything down quickly and shut down. There was no error or anything like that. It just shut down.
Upon booting, I was given a screen to enter the bitlocker recovery key. I tracked it down and entered it into the laptop. The laptop then tried to boot, but blue screened. In typical MS fashion, the blue screen showed for about 1/352352th of a second so I couldn't get any real information about the error.
I tried the boot system recover option that the os presented. I tried the option to recover from the last recovery point or to recover the other way. Each time the system booted back to the same problem.

My laptop does not shut down fully when I click on shutdown. The only way everything is shut down is using the power button. I also have some performance issues I have 2 drivers that are causing the laptop to run slowly - intel graphics kernal mode driver and Windows driver foundation mode.

Now the laptop wont boot into Windows. How do I fix this? I went to "repair my computer" then went to "reinstall windows while keeping my old files". Little did I know that this laptop had a broken power jack and was running off of battery. The computer shut down on stage 4/5. I have no CDs and used the option within the partition to reinstall. How do I reinstall windows now and keep my files after this... ? Did I lose all my files?
When I press f8 now to go to "Repair my Computer" it goes to Windows Boot Manager and says that windows has failed to start... Insert windows installation disk... Boot failed - required disk is inaccessible.

I'm writing about my friend's computer so I don't have all the info at my fingertips. It's about two years old. I know she has Windows 7 on it. She has been having trouble for a long time with the darned thing not wanting to shut down. I'm going to quote her description to me in an email and hope that someone has some ideas. I'm trying to help her out because she is not comfortable with going into forums and doing this. "It turns off some times right away. But then a few times it sits and waits to shut off. If I close the lid it only shuts down the screen but the computer is still running. Then later it turns back on as I hear the start up tone. Then I can click off again and it shuts down. If I don't turn it off then it shuts down after it use all the power."

We have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 7. Over the past two months or so, we have noticed that it will not shut down - the screen goes black (like it should) but the power switch shows that the computer stays on. This also happens when we tried shutting down in safe mode. Any ideas how to fix this? Could it be related to some f the drivers not loading?

So my system randomly froze up and shut down. System repair starts up but can not find a problem. I could care less about anything saved on my comp so I would just like to restore to factory settings.I put in the disk provided by iBuyPower to restore and when I try to, I get an error saying "not enough hdd space". I also can not get to a restore point as for some reason, there are none showing available now.I can not get to the desktop at all. Can not start in safe mode.

I have had my laptop (Dell Inspiron N7110) for less than a year, and everything has always run smoothly. I performed a format of my hard drive yesterday and installed a clean copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. Everything went fine with the format process, so I didn't think anything was amiss until I tried to shut down the laptop before going to bed. And that's when I discovered that it won't shut down, unless I physically hold down the power button (which I don't like doing, for obvious reasons.) If I choose the "Shut Down" option from the Start menu, the laptop goes through the "Shutting down..." process perfectly fine, but the laptop boots up again immediately upon turning off. So it's like instead of shutting down, the system just does a restart. Which is fine for some things, but I do eventually want to shut down my laptop (I don't like leaving it on overnight in case there's an electrical storm, for example.)

I had an HEUR:Virus.win32generic virus detected by my Kaspersky. I coud not get rid of it, so I deleted the file that it was in. All I remember is that the file ended in avgcorex.dll.Everything else works fine on the computer now except that when I go to start and shut down. The laptop shuts down but it turns itself back on right away.

My computer used to get stuck on shut down on half my shut downs. I had to shut it down by pressing the power button (can doing this regularly damage your computer?)I searched online and i stopped AMD External Events through "msconfig" and the problem disappeared for 6 daysYesterday, my computer hanged so i had to manually shut it downI turn it on and use the internet, windows media player for music, transfer files to drop box for around 2 minutes then i get the BSODgenerated an exception which the error handler did not catch. This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: Unknown

I was on vacation for 1 month and after that my PC suddenly did a check to 1 of my HDD's (Samsung 1000GB HDD - My storage drive that sometimes I just don't see in system anymore and system restore fixes the problem usually). After that check, my PC worked fine whole day, but the next day i Turn it on (After installing about 7-8 Important windows updates) I don't see my Samsung HDD, So I thought it's a usual problem that I have, I notice that the only restore points I have are from year 2011... That didn't suit me and I thought why do I have restore points so far behind ? But then I notice 1 more important update if I shut down my PC, So I thought it might fix the problem and maybe create another restore point for me. That's where I shut down my PC and start it again. Now it takes a lot longer in my BIOS and I notice that it doesn't detect any of my HDD's and asks for boot disk after that. Now I'm clueless what to do, since the problem I had was only with 1 HDD that had lesser rpm than my other one that i use for my system (Also it was the cheapest 1000GB HDD that I have seen long time ago and seems to have a lot of problems)
OS Windows 7 32-bit RAM 3GB (1GB + 2GB) Mobo (I don't know exact module but i write what was written in BIOS) Intel I945 for 945GZM-S2 F2 also i Know its from GIGABYTE HDD's: 1x 120GB 7200rpm with 3 partitions, 1x SAMSUNG 1TB (1000GB) HDD with 5400rpm CPU Intel Dual core 2.00GHZ
I haven't tried anything much other than pressing delete key and configuring BIOS... they were set to default nothing helped there + It doesn't detect multiple HDD's. the PSU is new and probably had same Voltage or even more I don't remember exactly which one of those.

Ive searched all the battery settings and have searched the internet and sadly cannot find anything about how to get rid of it.

Laptop will not turn off when I tell it to shut down. The operating system seems to shut down, but the computer itself stays on (case lights and fan are still active) and can only be turned off by holding the power button for 4 seconds. I have tried everything short of re-installing the OS - which I cannot do because of the non-transferable programs I have on this laptop. It is a Dell Vostro 3450 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Ok so when I had XP I would always use hibernate and only about once a week I would actually reboot the computer completely. Now that I have Windows 7 I would like to do the same. But now when I click hibernate the screen goes black and everything shuts off but the computer acts like its in standby. The lights are still on and computer is running.
Once this happens I cannot get back into windows or reboot without holding down the power button to force a reset. Each time that I have done with Windows 7 boots an error saying the computer was not shutdown correctly. Anyone know why it won't completely power off when I click hibernate. I have tried it about 5 separate times and it has not worked once.
