I had a power loss while installing a windows update about two months ago. Ever since then my system will hang either on logging off or shutting down.I have tried making a new user (No Help)it hangs in safe mode also.I also do not have a list of prior updates in control panel since this problem.The system works fine other than that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday, my computer crashed. I tried to restart, but after the BIOS screen, it just goes black, and has a flashing '_' in the top left corner. So I put in the reinstallation CD to try to repair the computer. I do everything necessary to bring up the System Recovery tool, but in the box that lists the Operating System to repair, it doesn't list any. So I clicked on Load Drivers, as it instructs, to find the hard drive drivers, and I CAN SEE MY C DRIVE in the dialog box. I am able to browse it and everything (Windows, Program Files, My Documents, everything). So my computer recognizes the hard drive and everything, it just says that there is no OS installed. I can't run System Restore or anything. how to "find" the operating system? Could something have happened in the registry that I could go edit?
I have tried so many things through the command prompt, but nothing works.
During a recent windows update my pc froze, (mid-update) and I restarted my machine. Now windows gets stuck at the black" Loading operating system..."screen. After a long wait it will eventually display boot from cd/. When I boot from my windows dvd my os is not shown in system recovery. I Have also tried running start up repair from recovery with no luck.

Not entirely sure why, whether it's a driver issue or what. If anyone can look into this and help my problem then.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have 2 physical systems.I am trying to migrate over to the new system which has new hardware etc...Currently my existing system is running absolutely fine. WS2008R2 EE 64bit with all updates. The drives are SATA (there are physical disks on the system and none of them are RAID)my new system is using an Asus p6x58D-E mobo and has 1 SSD SATA as a bootable drive. I also have 3 other phyiscal disks on this system and one of them is a RAID0 (2x2TB non bootable).after 3 days and nights of clean installation (as I thought I was doing something unsupported... I install Windows on the SSD I create the RAID0 system on the 2x2TB HDD I install the drivers (chipset, graphics, mobo and SATA/RAID). I then do Windows update.it finds 92 updates + 1 update for the onboard LAN.I install them but in the end it fails to install saying that there were installations in progress and should reboot to complete the updates.So I reboot and it gets into Windows doing some configuring, and then it restarts again. Then it just says:"Stage 3 of 3. Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer And the progress is just going round and round. The system is not locked or anything. the new system has an i7 core Extreme 990x 3.46GHz gulftown CPU. right now, its just there... "configuring".

So here I am. My PC appears to be running smoothly, but I don't know if there's any hidden damage in the system. I still want to clear out any residue from the failed install before I download the patch again, but now I'm wary of using System Restore. Also, the MSE update notification has me puzzled - the last restore point I tried to restore to preceeded an MSE definitions update, but that restore failed (didn't it?) and anyway, I don't normally recieve definitions update notifications from "Solve PC Issues". This las left me unsure where my system is at restore point-wise right now.
My windows 7 computer hung when i started it the other day. The startup repair did not work after several attempts. I tried to choose an old restore point and it gave me a message "you must enable protection on this drive" Problem was, it did not allow me to check the drive box or give any option to enable protection....So, i started a system restore of the software, keeping data intact. It did its thing and presented a message "setup could not install windows on this systems hardware" It then reboots and comes back with " windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation." It just keeps rebooting and returning this message....i cannot restart the installation.... the only other info i got was after the initial startup repair it said this :

this all happend after a critical windows update by the way....

Still get the 7003 errors but system works OK.Has only recently started to happen but I have had to remove a Trojan Virus. All virus checking is OK but I suspect something got damaged.
The system started an update and in spite of the warning not to turn the computer off, the update got interrupted.The restart has been 'Preparing Your Desktop' for about 2 hours with no diagnostics or any indicators.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed a retail copy of win 7 on my laptop and have been experiencing some issues. At first everything worked fine but out of the blue my desktop/folders have not been auto-refreshing. Whenever I try to delete or create a new folder I have to manually refresh to the folder in order to view it. When shutting down my laptop it takes 5+ minutes and when my desktop is loading after booting up the laptop it takes several minutes for everything to load and for the win 7 chime.
Finally, it won't allow me to update. When I try to use the windows updater it hangs for a while on "creating restoring point" (which may be normal) but then permanently hangs on installing update 1/16 at 0%. If I try canceling the update nothing happens and even when I try to shut down the laptop it attempts to install the updates but hangs on update 1/16.
From researching these issues I've realized that the auto-refresh problem is not uncommon and has something to do with a network. This may be unrelated but these problems only started to occur when I was transferring pictures via a USB stick.
Dell inspiron 580 with core i5-760 @ 2.8ghz and 4gb DDR3 RAM, windows 7 home premium an nvidia geforce 310. My system gets hang at windows logo while starting, while system is shutting down. Have nayone come across about this problem earlier. Is the nvidia Graphic card causing the problem? I have even restored my PC by the problem still the same.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a copy of windows on my computer for about 3 months (non legit key) and with being happy with the O/S i decieded to go out and buy a copy and do a fresh install.Since installing, my 200gb HDD will no longer boot past BIOS post. I dropped it from the system and left my other 300gb HDD in and installed it to the HDD no worries, boots up fine and can use win 7. I then did a software update and now it gets stuck on the windows startup screen....

However, I have tried to boot from the DVD on 3 computers and cant get past the "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt. the weird thing is, all 3 computers display "Press any key to boot from CD o"
I press a key and nothing happens. Why is that little "o" appearing at the end?
Recently, with no system changes, suspicious downloads, or drops in recent history, my 6 Month old Clevo build began exhibiting two very bizarre symptoms:
1) Upon booting, Windows will start normally ,up until the mouse is rendered before the log in screen appears, then the system seems to power down. However, upon pressing the power button, the computer resumes booting right from where it left off as if it had entered a very rapid hibernation mode.
2) When the lid is closed during normal use, even when the system is not set to sleep or hibernate upon a lid closing, the system will hang permanently, with indicator lights like caps lock getting stuck either on or off and the hard drive light not turning on. This requires a hard reset to fix.
I have scanned memory, boot sectors, and the entire hard drive for malicious programs like worms, packers, and rootkits with Avast and Kapersky boot time scans to no avail.The system behaves normally otherwise, except during boot or lid closing. No overheating, screen flashing, or abnormal system processes are occurring. Though I have not yet checked the exact temps or checked the contents of rundll.I have a hunch it is the motherboard, but I don't have the screwdrivers to check or try to reset the SODIMMS.I have found a few questionable errors in the event log, but no strange processes in system resource manager.This is transcript of said questionable error log with all events from past 7 days (as of 11/27/2011) (with said issue arising on the 25th)The Download is 215 Kb compressed and 5 Mb uncompressed with over 7,000 events.On an unrelated note, the event log reports the processor getting underpowered, is this just a momentary thing during bootup or something that could hinder performance?
I have an annoying issue and it only happens about half the time my computer is turned on. When I run a program in "admin mode", the screen goes black and hangs for about 5 seconds, the prompt comes up asking me to approve, I click yes, screen goes black for another 5 seconds then the program comes up. This also happens sometimes when I wake the computer from the screensaver. I also happens when I try to open task manager. With the specs of my computer, there's no reason this should be happening. The computer is only 2 months old. I have run CHKDSK, did sfc /scannow, all are supposedly clean now. I checked my registry for errors, repaired those. Ran an AVG scan, also clean. My graphics drivers are up to date. All of my other drivers should be up to date as well. If I go into the device manager, there are no dreaded "!" icons next to any devices.

Purchased a new Dell XPS 8000 three days ago and everything appeared to be working fine. I was using the wired keyboard and mouse supplied with the computer.
Connected my old usb Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard/Mouse 1.0A to the system and suddenly the system would never go to screen saver. I checked for windows updates and it recommended an update for the wireless keyboard and mouse. Installed the update and now my system goes to screen saver.
The problem now is that it doesn't return from screen saver consistently. I am still characterizing the problem... When I move the mouse I get the login screen, type the password, hit return, and the screen goes blank (as if it is back in the blank screen saver).
I have had the desktop reactivate very quickly (normally) if the screen saver was on only for a few minutes. I have had it take 2 minutes plus to get to the desktop. I have also had the system freeze and ended up power cycling.
I thought this was a power management issue. I tried setting up power settings so nothing would ever go into power save mode but this hasn't made a difference.
I just reconnected my wired keyboard and mouse to see if the issue goes away. I am expecting this to solve it, but I really would like to use the wireless.
Update...
1. Went back to wired mouse/keyboard and the issue persisted.
2. Rolled back updates from last Windows 7 update: Dell Monitor 6/21/2009 1.0.0.0, Microsoft (HID Class) 5/8/2009 7.00.258.0, and Microsoft (USB) 11/03/2009 7.10.344.0. Problem still persisited.
3. Did a "reset to defaults" on the Dell power settings profile and removed the password from the blank screen saver. Seemed to resolve the issue, but only tried it once with the screen saver on for an hour.
4. Added the password back to the screen saver. Worked once and then hung the computer the 2nd time. I move the mouse, get the login screen, type my password, hit return, and the monitors go blank (as if it is in the blank screen saver). At this point it is hung, no mouse, no keyboard, ... must power cycle to get the system back up and running.
Yet another update...
Found a "solution" (let's call it a work around) for this issue in another thread: Seven locks up after an hour or so idle. I had my task bar set to auto hide, changed it to be visible all of the time and no more system hangs.
While I am thrilled to not have to power cycle everytime I go to screen saver, I would still like to auto hide the task bar. I wonder if there isn't a better fix that would allow me to still configure the task bar.

I'm doing a clean install of 7 ultimate x64, I've got another hd with the rc installed that has been running for a while so I know the hardware works under 7.
If I boot the new install with my 5 port usb pcix card, it detects a "pci-to-pci bridge" starts to install drivers, and then the whole system hangs. I've tried taking everything else out, no joy.
Any suggestions on how to get this device installed?

The initial build of the system went as planned until I activated the CPU overclocker on the ASUS motherboard. When this is on the system seems to boot ok and starts to load windows but then hangs and all I get is a blank black screen.I have had to reboot and reset the motherboard to the default values to get it to work ok.
one day it just shut down and would not startup any more, it goes straight to startup repair and fails and loops this. i have fixed this issue before, with bootrec tools on the 7 CD, but this time it wont do anything, no matter what i try it tells me "total identified windows installations: 0"does anyone know what to do, other than a fresh install, since i have hundreds of gbs of music and movies not recently backed up, and lots of work on the drive i cannot lose.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a security solution when it comes to stolen laptops. I would like a solution that involves both full system encryption for the main O/S, and a dummy O/S that is loaded with location tracking and spying software.The problem with doing this on one O/S is that full system encryption requires a password at boot, meaning the thief will be forced to wipe the HDD and the location tracking software will never get a chance to work. Likewise, I can disable the encryption and use a guest account on a single O/S, but that leaves my files vulnerable. I could also use a Truecrypt container for my secure files, but they are of fixed size, cumbersome to use, and can't protect all sensitive data without mucking up the main user account.
The best solution would be (ideally) as follows:One Windows 7 installation fully encrypted using Truecrypt. One Windows 7 installation setup as a dummy O/S. Grub Bootloader that can load either O/S (Grub supports unlocking Truecrypt). The two main problems that I have with this setup, is that this requires 5 partitions (2 for each Windows 7 install, 1 for grub), and I haven't figured out how to reduce this number. I can only have 4 primary partitions on a drive using MBR. Another problem I'm having, is that Windows 7 likes to mess around with the drive letter assignments, refuses to boot from anything but C: drive, and doesn't check UUIDs or anything else when selecting which partition to boot.I can try to do this with Windows XP as the dummy O/S, reducing the partition number to 4, and Windows XP will boot off any drive letter. Still, Windows has a problem with attacking other Windows installations, and causing general mayhem. Windows does not like to share the HDD with other Windows, go figure.
