The system started an update and in spite of the warning not to turn the computer off, the update got interrupted.The restart has been 'Preparing Your Desktop' for about 2 hours with no diagnostics or any indicators.
View 1 RepliesI had this pc working decently with Vista Ultimate x64, but wanted to bump it up to Windows 7 since the audio was poor and Media Center did not work well. I tried the upgrade through Windows route and this is when the issue began. The install went normally, but when i got to the screen for preparing for first use, it hung.
I have tried everything I know of, including using Active@ KillDisk to wipe the hard drive entirely. Whether I try a 32 bit or 64 bit copy of 7 Ultimate, it hangs at the same spot. I striped this machine down and have only a single DDR3 2GB memory stick in the mobo slot...
I can install Vista Ultimate x64 without issue..
When doing a clean install on the Gateway machines, Windows 7 goes through the whole setup and installation process. I name my user account and computer name, pick passwords and choose how I want Windows to update. When it goes to prepare my desktop, it is about to load and is saying Welcome, then welcome changes from Welcome to shutting down, and the computer restarts. After the restart the Gateway recovery manager comes up and makes me restore my vista installation.I am not using Upgrade media, however because the installation is doing the exact same thing on only the Gateway machines, and the HP installation went fine, it leads me to believe it is a issue with the manufacturer?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was shutting down my laptop last night and there was a program (Adobe Reader, I think) that caused it to wait before shutting down. I left it assuming it would eventually shut down. I pushed the power button this morning to turn the computer on, and it says "resuming Windows" and then goes to the screen that says "Logging off". It has been hung up on that screen for over 30 minutes now, so who knows how long it did that last night when it was supposed to shut down. I can press and hold the power button to get it to power down, but when I press the power button again, it starts the same "resuming Windows" stuff all over again. I tried tapping the F8 button when it was restarting, but no luck. I can't use my computer at all, This is a pretty new laptop (Dell), so this is especially frustrating. Not to mention I have LOTS of work to do and I everything is on that laptop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have good installation disk because I have use it a lot before and recently.I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 on my sistem partition, (recently wiped and formatted) but everytime setup finishes with the first part of the installation it automatically restarts but it gets stuck when the "press any key to boot from dvd" message e tridappears, (If I don't press any key).If I press any key it wil start the installation over again.I tried ejecting the cd and boot from the harddrive but the screen will remain black with blinking cursor.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm at my whit's end with this. My PC shuts down fine but hangs on restart. It does this is both safe and normal mode. It appears to hang right before the HD would get turned off. The SHUTTING DOWN screen proceeds fine and the HD stops it's activity, the screen goes black (the HD light stays) and it just hangs there. Pressing the RESET button on the PC starts it up fine. If I am restarting from some utility (for example when installing Windows) it can hang with the RESTARTING WINDOWS screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have 2 physical systems.I am trying to migrate over to the new system which has new hardware etc...Currently my existing system is running absolutely fine. WS2008R2 EE 64bit with all updates. The drives are SATA (there are physical disks on the system and none of them are RAID)my new system is using an Asus p6x58D-E mobo and has 1 SSD SATA as a bootable drive. I also have 3 other phyiscal disks on this system and one of them is a RAID0 (2x2TB non bootable).after 3 days and nights of clean installation (as I thought I was doing something unsupported... I install Windows on the SSD I create the RAID0 system on the 2x2TB HDD I install the drivers (chipset, graphics, mobo and SATA/RAID). I then do Windows update.it finds 92 updates + 1 update for the onboard LAN.I install them but in the end it fails to install saying that there were installations in progress and should reboot to complete the updates.So I reboot and it gets into Windows doing some configuring, and then it restarts again. Then it just says:"Stage 3 of 3. Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer And the progress is just going round and round. The system is not locked or anything. the new system has an i7 core Extreme 990x 3.46GHz gulftown CPU. right now, its just there... "configuring".

So here I am. My PC appears to be running smoothly, but I don't know if there's any hidden damage in the system. I still want to clear out any residue from the failed install before I download the patch again, but now I'm wary of using System Restore. Also, the MSE update notification has me puzzled - the last restore point I tried to restore to preceeded an MSE definitions update, but that restore failed (didn't it?) and anyway, I don't normally recieve definitions update notifications from "Solve PC Issues". This las left me unsure where my system is at restore point-wise right now.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy windows 7 computer hung when i started it the other day. The startup repair did not work after several attempts. I tried to choose an old restore point and it gave me a message "you must enable protection on this drive" Problem was, it did not allow me to check the drive box or give any option to enable protection....So, i started a system restore of the software, keeping data intact. It did its thing and presented a message "setup could not install windows on this systems hardware" It then reboots and comes back with " windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation." It just keeps rebooting and returning this message....i cannot restart the installation.... the only other info i got was after the initial startup repair it said this :

this all happend after a critical windows update by the way....
I now have W 7 Home premium. I have windows update set to auto update. As I was checking email and just cruizin the net etc. My pc just shut down and restarted. I discovered that it was the auto update. I want to continue to use auto update, but I don't want my pc to shut down and restart even though it warns me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed a retail copy of win 7 on my laptop and have been experiencing some issues. At first everything worked fine but out of the blue my desktop/folders have not been auto-refreshing. Whenever I try to delete or create a new folder I have to manually refresh to the folder in order to view it. When shutting down my laptop it takes 5+ minutes and when my desktop is loading after booting up the laptop it takes several minutes for everything to load and for the win 7 chime.
Finally, it won't allow me to update. When I try to use the windows updater it hangs for a while on "creating restoring point" (which may be normal) but then permanently hangs on installing update 1/16 at 0%. If I try canceling the update nothing happens and even when I try to shut down the laptop it attempts to install the updates but hangs on update 1/16.
From researching these issues I've realized that the auto-refresh problem is not uncommon and has something to do with a network. This may be unrelated but these problems only started to occur when I was transferring pictures via a USB stick.
I had a power loss while installing a windows update about two months ago. Ever since then my system will hang either on logging off or shutting down.I have tried making a new user (No Help)it hangs in safe mode also.I also do not have a list of prior updates in control panel since this problem.The system works fine other than that.

This AM, following a Win 7 update & restart, I powered off the system before the update was complete (the Alienware splash screen covers up Win info on startup). Now, the machine will start, but goes no further. I cannot boot into Bios or any of the system files. The machine also does not recognize the original OS disk, so I can't even do a reinstall. No keyboard commands are functional at this point.

Every thing I clicked on had the "sutters". Asked MS security to do quick virus scan and it came back clean asked for full scan and could not get it to do one.Restarted computer in hopes that it would work it's problem out but now I can not sign in under any account including admin? View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday I did a load of windows updates.. Service pack was apart of it. After all was done I rebooted and found my pc was freezing solid. I then did a system restore and still had freezing. I removed my AVG for now. So far no freeze but I have not been running long enough to really know... but what is happening is when it's in sleep mode the hard drive revs up about every 4 minutes. the computer remains sleeping but does this 3 second rev? My next thought was to do the windows updates again?

After logging off and shutting down, the PC starts the process of restarting but gets stuck on the welcome screen of the motherboard. I can see the light showing had disk drive activity but no further progress takes place. I have to then forcibly stop the PC by pressing the start button long. After the PC stops, I can start it notmally by pressing the start button again and then it starts normally.Whether the restart option is used mouse Start/Restart or clicking on the <Restart Now> option after updates, the problem is the same.

This is not the first time this has happened. I do a system restore to a date earlier than the last windows update and it seems to clear the problem.
over the weekend I updated my video card drivers to the most recent version and since then my system would crash after I play a game of Dota or whatever. If I left the computer running without running any games it would perform fine and not crash. Sometimes it would give me a BSOD but more often than not my computer would simply turn off and then restart. There were no dump file created nor where there any events logged other than:"Session "Microsoft Security Client OOBE" stopped due to the following error:0xC000000D" and "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first..."I ran a Memtest86+ and I have no errors and I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7 so I'm pretty sure that it is due to my video card drivers.But the problem now is that the system crashes even after I did a system restore and after I completely reinstalled my drivers to a much much earlier version (like a year and a half old driver).

I think the issue is the network name for some reason is NETWORK 3 on my desktop but on my laptop it's something else, my laptop can create a homegroup but my desktop cannot.It's weird, my desktop cannot create not join my laptop homegroup but my laptop can create it just can't join my desktop so it's a desktop issue and I think it's the multiple network names after you set up a network and it asked you if this is public or home I created like 3 of them since my wifi routers kept on going bad.
Does anyone know a good way of disabling the Windows update restart prompt completely? I have disabled the 15 minute auto restart timer but I still get the prompt to restart popping up when I am trying to play a full screen game. The best thing I have found so far is an AutoHotKey script that automatically clicks postpone which is fine for normal computer use but the problem is that my games still minimize for the short time the popup is displayed.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWoke up today to find my computer (which I never turn off) sitting at the login screen saying "Please Wait..." I've seen it say that before, but only when you'd type your password incorrectly and it hangs for a second before it goes back to the login screen. Anyway, when I type my password in and click login the system just hangs at the "Welcome" screen. I left it for over and hour and came back, still hanging. I've seen older threads on here suggesting to enable "boot log" after pressing f8, that did nothing.
I am able to log into the computer on an old admin account that I created over a year ago, it's never been used, it works fine. Acts like a fresh install and only half my programs are there unfortunately. However, programs can be reinstalled. My biggest problem is that when I go into my files on the old account while logged into my fresh account I can access everything after gaining access, but when I try to open "Desktop" from the old account the system just Hangs, just like it does while trying to log into my normal account.
When I right click to examine the properties of "desktop" on the normal account, it says 0 bytes, in fact 0 everything, like it doesn't exist. This is really bad because a lot of my work is saved in folders on my desktop and I need the data from there. When I logged into the new account and gained access to my files and saw that I could read everything fine in my documents I had a sigh of relief figuring that all I would have to do would be a re-install or continue on a new account. Doesn't it just figure that the desktop folder isn't working?
