Homegroup Hangs On Desktop But Works?

Jan 1, 2013

Modem = sb5100
Wireless Router = Dlink 601

I think the issue is the network name for some reason is NETWORK 3 on my desktop but on my laptop it's something else, my laptop can create a homegroup but my desktop cannot. It's weird, my desktop cannot create not join my laptop homegroup but my laptop can create it just can't join my desktop so it's a desktop issue and I think it's the multiple network names after you set up a network and it asked you if this is public or home I created like 3 of them since my wifi routers kept on going bad.

Homegroup Is Corrupted And Works Until Next Reboot?

Jan 13, 2012

I have two windows 7 home premium 64 bit installs in my home on the same networkI've set up a homegroup on one and put the password on the other pc. Turned off asking for credentials, turned on network discovery, have set up two shares on the 2nd pc with EVERYONE as having full access. (the shares are drives, not folders).By all means, I should be able to access the shares on the 2nd computer, but I always get prompted for user/pass. I should add, the user/pass on both computers is the same and they are both in the same workgroup, MSHOME. By reading up on a few other posts here, I decided to try to rename the second computer, reboot, name it back to the original, reboot, and see if that fixed the problem. It did, and I was able to access the shares without having to put in a user/pass.

However, MS patches came down and I had to patch and bounce both machines (typical weekly patch load). After doing so, I'm back to the same problem--requesting the user/pass again. And, when I do put in the user/pass, it doesn't connect either.I'm stumped. I did read another post where someone had to put in the user or group of NETWORK with full access and that solved his problem, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why I cannot get this homegroup to work properly. I've set up probably 4-5 homegroups in the past without any issues and have done all of the same things here

Windows 7 Explorer Hangs While Accessing Shared Homegroup Folders?

Jan 28, 2013

I have three computers all running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, one of which functions partly as a media center (hosting music etc), the second and third being my office workstation and laptop respectively. The media center has a hard line to my cable modem (via Trendnet wireless-N router) while the latter two connect via wireless; the workstation via a wireless ethernet hub and the laptop via it's integrated wireless.I currently have all of my media folders shared via homegroup on the media center.
My laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad W500) can access all of the shared folders. My office workstation, while I can "see" the shared libraries/folders on my media center, hangs (the explorer window appears to be perpetually loading) whenever I attempt to open any of the folders. Sometimes when this happens I can kill/restart explorer but ever so often explorer itself will be unable to restart and I will have to reboot the entire machine.I have Windows Security Essentials running on both machines - all three are almost identical with respects to the installed software.I have tried reconfiguring the homegroup multiple times, flushing the dns cache, resetting and cycling the router, and have even swapped out wireless adapters (on the problematic workstation) to no avail.

Windows 7 X32 Hangs/freezes Randomly, Only Safe Mode + Networking Works

Sep 3, 2012

I've got a new copy of windows 7 (32 bit version) I have got 4 GB ram only 3,25 in use (like I had on the XP version, running on the same PC) and after I boot up the PC I just look at the desktop, play with some random games, create and delete folders, do some little stress to the RAM or sometimes just doing nothing. The only boot that works is safe mode and its variants.

Things that I've done in the past 7 days:

-I checked RAM integrity - no errors

-Everything is up to date (drivers, everything) - it hanged/froze even with a fresh copy of Windows 7

-I use wireless if that is a problem, found some errors about it and will post them after this list

-enabled services and disabled them VIA msconfig (toying around I found out that it WONT CRASH with any internet service on normal mode)

-I checked Windows 7 compatibility and it's 100% compatible

-Tried to update BIOS but I don't think it will solve anything anyways

-Used dozens of registry cleaners (CCleaner and lots; lots more) - still nothing

-Put a second HDD on my machine with Windows 7 same version, it still crashed, but on the second machine the second HDD works great.

Event 7001: The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Need To Sign In From Desktop To Access Other HomeGroup Laptops?

Jan 23, 2013

I have setup a Homegroup for a desktop and 2 laptops. All computers have joined the Homegroup and the 2 laptops can see files on the other computers. However, when I try to access the other computers from the desktop, I'm asked to sign in. I enter the other computer user's name and since neither has a password I just click on OK. Then I get a message that says I don't have permission to access the files. Why am I asked to sign-in only on my desktop? Do I need to setup passwords on the laptops?

Desktop Background No Longer Works

Dec 16, 2012

So I opened up my tower to do some dusting and I accidentally dropped the tower door and the wires that power the tower door fan was ripped off. There was a red and black wire that has these weird looking prongs on them. I first did not know where they went... So I just looked at the 4 pin whole plugs and started to stick these two in these plugs to test... First few times I did this; the pc restarted and there was a spark....(could this be y my background no longer works?) Then I found two holes out of the four pinned plugs that powered my fan.. Hurray I thought cause the fan was powered, the blue light was on and I was happy for that moment. Then I realized my background was just a blank color.. So I right clicked/personalize/desktop background/ set up the photos I saved/hit save changes. and nothing. no background.

Remote Desktop Connection Works Intermittently

Feb 11, 2013

I hired a networking person to enable remote desktop connection between 2 computers for me. The computer I am trying to connect to uses a switch to run internet between 2 computers but I only connect to one of those computers. No-ip is set up on the computer I am trying to connect to to standardize the ip addresses and I am connecting using port 3389. What happens when I try and connect is as follows. If I have not connected for many hours (maybe 5 or more) remote desktop connection will not connect. In order for it to work I have to go to my logmein account and log into the computer there first then after logging out of the logmein connection and waiting a couple minutes I can log in using the remote connection fine. Then, for the rest of the day I can use the remote connection with no problems.

In the morning when I try again, it won't connect, I have to go to logmein once again and then it works. I thought maybe it had to do with a power setting so I created my own power profile and set everything to never sleep, hibernate or do anything except run and run at maximum performance...But that didn't affect it, I still can't log in using remote desktop connection after a long wait. I have also looked in the logs for both my Virus software (AVG) and the computer to see if anything sticks out but AVG firewall log stopped logging in November and I can't seem to reset it and the local cpu event logs don't show any issues with remote desktop connection.

Account Hangs On Login - Cannot Access Desktop

Feb 1, 2012

Woke up today to find my computer (which I never turn off) sitting at the login screen saying "Please Wait..." I've seen it say that before, but only when you'd type your password incorrectly and it hangs for a second before it goes back to the login screen. Anyway, when I type my password in and click login the system just hangs at the "Welcome" screen. I left it for over and hour and came back, still hanging. I've seen older threads on here suggesting to enable "boot log" after pressing f8, that did nothing.

I am able to log into the computer on an old admin account that I created over a year ago, it's never been used, it works fine. Acts like a fresh install and only half my programs are there unfortunately. However, programs can be reinstalled. My biggest problem is that when I go into my files on the old account while logged into my fresh account I can access everything after gaining access, but when I try to open "Desktop" from the old account the system just Hangs, just like it does while trying to log into my normal account.

When I right click to examine the properties of "desktop" on the normal account, it says 0 bytes, in fact 0 everything, like it doesn't exist. This is really bad because a lot of my work is saved in folders on my desktop and I need the data from there. When I logged into the new account and gained access to my files and saw that I could read everything fine in my documents I had a sigh of relief figuring that all I would have to do would be a re-install or continue on a new account. Doesn't it just figure that the desktop folder isn't working?

Windows 7 Startup Hangs At Welcome Or Desktop Blank

Jun 14, 2012

my windows7 x64 will not boot completely. I get the welcome screen, with a continuous whirling circle or, sometimes, i get to the desktop, but no icons or task bar. I can't get any response from control/alt/delete to get to task manager. I have easy access to safe mode, and everything there seems normal. I have run AVAST, Malwarebytes, and a couple of other antivirus programs from safe mode, with no virus or malware identified. I have read every post in as many tech sites as I can find, and nothing seems to work. I have already tried going back to earlier restores, and am out of them.

I need to backup all my work files and reinstall Windows 7, I guess. I'm concerned that I will not have the drivers I need when I do that. I have a backup Macrium system image, but it's a year old, the external drive it's on clicks like crazy, indicating it's going bad, and I've got a LOT of work on my machine I don't want to lose. I've already beaten myself severly with a rubber hose for putting off backups and restore disks, so save that...

Toshiba Satellite Laptop Hangs After Loading Desktop Randomly?

Jun 6, 2012

i recently purchased a new toshiba laptop with windows 7 64bit installed, which worked pretty well until i ran into a random crash a few days ago. i'm not sure why it happened, but at the time, i was running a Internet video and then i got a post on google talk. at that point, the computer froze on the sound and i wasn't able to use the mouse anymore. it acted like a stop error, even though no blue screen popped up or anything. it seems like it freezes like this when i leave the computer on for a long period of time or something. it's happened around three times, once with the google talk sound, and twice with the skype sound, and all three times Internet was opened.

anyway, ever since that initial crash, i've had a hard time starting up the computer. the first time, i attempted to run the task manager and click the "show processes from all users" button, however after clicking the button, the computer seems to hang at loading consent.exe, and the cpu was around 4% or so. i was also trying to load google chrome, but it wouldn't load either. after waiting about 5 minutes, i pressed ctrl-alt-delete, which then i got an error that the window couldn't load.the second time i tried running the task manager, i noticed that the networking and sharing center wouldn't work at all. i could run programs (that weren't internet browsers), as well as the control panel... but i couldn't open the networking and sharing window from either the control panel or the icon on the taskbar. consent.exe was hanging in this instance as well.

after those two times, i was able to get the computer working again and didn't have too many problems as long as the computer was on. ran into the problem again after successfully shutting down windows one night, then trying to turn it back on the next day. however, this was even more odd because explorer.exe crashed on its own, but i hadn't done anything since i turned the computer on. i also couldn't get the task manager open for some reason.today, after leaving the computer off since last night, i tried turning on the computer again, and once again the computer hanged on trying to load google chrome and the task manager. this time, the task manager wouldn't load, but the icon would appear in the taskbar (frozen. can't right click it or anything.) and skype was working. i made a comment on google talk, but that froze after i got a response.i was able to hit the shut down button in that instance, but after waiting 8 minutes, the windows logoff screen wouldn't show up, so i just shut it down and turned it on again.

HomeGroup Printers

Jul 15, 2009

i have a pc (Windows 7 build 7100) that is connected to two printers (of which one prints (HP laserjet CP1215) and one only scans (no ink)) and it shares those printer.

My Windows 7 build 7600 (on my main pc) added the scan-printer without asking me and didn't add the other one (the only one I can print). I then disconnected this one from the other pc and looked again, no install here.

While I used build 7100 with my main pc too, it asked me: "Do you want to install HomeGroup printer?" and it worked like a charm.

Now I tried to manually add this printer and it asked me for a driver.

I installed the HP drivers but still, not working. Then, when it asked me again to point to the .inf file, i selected the one HP-driver-installation installed (to my C:Program files folder) but it said this driver is from a "non-certified" publisher (or something like this, sadly I can't reproduce this so I don't remember the exact words).

I clicked "install nonetheless" because I knew it was the right driver (printer prints perfectly from all other Windows 7 workstations).

Now when I try to connect to the printer (still not showing up in "Devices and printers" it tries to connect, looks for a driver, kinda finds one and then tells me, it can't connect.

I cannot even select a new driver or anything, I can only close the window.

On all my other pcs (I only use Windows 7 since the RC) it works and worked without problems. I miss the "Install Homegroup printer" prompt and well ...

any ideas?

ah well i installed 32bit versions of the driver and now i downloaded 64bit versions, but even after installing it doesn't work and as I've said before, I cannot manually select a driver inf file anymore, so ... I can't install the printer.

Cannot Connect To Homegroup

Jul 29, 2011

I have a laptop, HTPC, and a desktop, all connected to my internet wirelessly. All of the systems were connected to the homegroup perfectly last night, but then I started having problem this morning. The HTPC was connected to the homegroup, but unable to detect any of the computers. Same with the rest of them. So I left the homegroup from the HTPC thinking I could just reconnect. Big mistake. After that the only option that was available to me was to "create a new group". After many restarts and settings, I decided to create a new homegroup. I then left the original homegroup from my laptop, so that I could join the new homegroup, but alas, the same thing happens, I could not see the old homegroup from the desktop, or the new homegroup from the HTPC! The only option available to to create another new homegroup! I did the same thing again with my desktop, and now all three machines each on its own homegroup.
