Windows 7 Hangs On Restart?
Aug 28, 2010
Windows 7 Professional 64bit When I try to perform a restart, the computer goes into oblivion. Drive light flickers a bit but I've let it rest over an hour and it didn't restart. Have to press the reset button. Otherwise everything seems OK. I've run deep scans with Malwarebytes and Kaspersky and no warnings?

I'm at my whit's end with this. My PC shuts down fine but hangs on restart. It does this is both safe and normal mode. It appears to hang right before the HD would get turned off. The SHUTTING DOWN screen proceeds fine and the HD stops it's activity, the screen goes black (the HD light stays) and it just hangs there. Pressing the RESET button on the PC starts it up fine. If I am restarting from some utility (for example when installing Windows) it can hang with the RESTARTING WINDOWS screen.

I was shutting down my laptop last night and there was a program (Adobe Reader, I think) that caused it to wait before shutting down. I left it assuming it would eventually shut down. I pushed the power button this morning to turn the computer on, and it says "resuming Windows" and then goes to the screen that says "Logging off". It has been hung up on that screen for over 30 minutes now, so who knows how long it did that last night when it was supposed to shut down. I can press and hold the power button to get it to power down, but when I press the power button again, it starts the same "resuming Windows" stuff all over again. I tried tapping the F8 button when it was restarting, but no luck. I can't use my computer at all, This is a pretty new laptop (Dell), so this is especially frustrating. Not to mention I have LOTS of work to do and I everything is on that laptop.

I am trying to upgrade Vista to Windows7 Home Premium and I got this message after the installer copied ~2GB of files on my PC:
"setup can't continue. restart the computer and restart setup. when prompted try getting the latest updates."
I restarted the PC and restarted the setup and I got the same message. I updated the Mother Board Bios and restarted the setup I got the same message. I have tried both options (get update and no update during the setup). And it didn't work.
I do not want to do custom install (fresh install) on my computer.

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 will hang after the "Starting Windows" logo, showing only a black screen, forcing me to hold down the power button.Windows will boot in safe mode and will boot if I disable my video card from Device Manager.I have run hard drive and memory diagnostics without any errors showing up.I did not change anything before the problem began occuring.I've already tried restoring to the initial system image from Lenovo OneKey Recovery (I'm using an IdeaPad Y560) and using the Windows System Restore, as well as updating drivers and BIOS.Attached are my event logs in administrative view from today (The problem has been occuring for a week or two, however, I don't have access to logs from that time), in which I reinstall my drivers and attempt to install a download manager in safe mode among other things.

I just installed a new ssd (X-25m) on a clients computer along with Windows 7 64bit and 8GB of RAM. The computer hangs for anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 seconds+ and sometimes just freezes up all together until I restart. Sometimes, it freezes icons and I can still use the mouse, and can double click to start a program, but it won't start up until it unfreezes, then everything I've opened suddenly opens all at once. Other times, even the mouse is frozen, and I have to wait 30s to a minute before I get it back.
Things I've tried- all Windows Updates, and updated all chipset drivers for the mobo (MSI P6N SLI Platinum)

I am trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Win 7 Ultimate using a DVD bought at retail. The upgrade process hangs while Gathering programs and settings, always at the 86% mark. Yesterday it hung at 6:00 PM and I let it run overnight -- at 9:00 AM next day it was still hung. No error message, no shutdown, just sitting there waiting.Following suggestions from various sources I have tried working from an empty start folder in Vista, and from a clean boot in Vista. Neither made any difference. I have turned off antivirus and taken down the firewall. My system is approved for upgrade by MS. I have tried starting the upgrade program from Vista safe mode and by booting from the DVD, but was not allowed to continue. I have done everything suggested by MS as a prelude to upgrading. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 530.

It hangs on start up; it gets past the Bios but stays at the Windows Logo and says "Loading Windows" until I am forced to shut down. Here are my specs:
EVGA 780i mobo
3.0ghz intel duo-core processor
4 gigs of DDR2 RAM
1 TB seagate HDD
1 gig of video (Gforce 9800GT 512mb SLI)
So my computer was working perfectly fine until this happened. However, this has happened before! This same exact problem happened before, so I figured it was the hard drive so I got a new one(the one I have now).Fine, it worked for about 1 month. Then this happened... again. I do not know what the problem is. Like I said in the description if my computer does get past the windows logo and I log on, after about 10 minutes of running I freeze and have to force shut down. Then I am stuck back at the Windows Logo... I have also tried to insert the Windows CD itself and try to repair windows, but even then it still won't get past the windows logo.

A friend asked me to take a look at her laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite L775 with Windows 7 Home Premium. The computer starts fine until the green progress bar finishes loading. After that, a cursor appears and can be moved, but nothing else loads. F2 loads BIOS during startup, F12 loads a boot menu, and every other F key (other than F8) loads an OS selection screen. F8 does nothing. I've also tried booting from a restoration disc. The pixelized progress bar loads (slowly, as is usual when booting from a disc) but then the normal boot process continues with the same problem as before. I can't even get into Safe Mode to try and troubleshoot anything.

This is something annoying and surprising- I thought Microsoft fixed these issues. What happens is when ever I start a media player (Power DVD, My TV Tuner, WMC or MC) the computer freezes for a moment (about 20 seconds) and then becomes normal. Same happens when I exit the media program.

Systems hangs after seemingly OK boot. Logged in as user but no desktop icons. Rebooted in Safe Mode - seemed OK.Looked @ Event Log. Errors
[code]...
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Dnscache serviceRestarted in Normal Mode. Booted fine and logged in OK. Still get the 7003 errors but system works OK.Has only recently started to happen but I have had to remove a Trojan Virus. All virus checking is OK but I suspect something got damaged.

I successfully transferred my WIN 7 and Programs (they are on an OCZ SATA SSD) to a new motherboard and CPU. Until here no problem, the OS started perfectly, went online and activated my copy of Windows 7. Then I shut down and connected my second HD, a small 320 GB Scorpio where I save all my personal files. Reboot and Windows 7 after loading, freezes. Had to reset and boot in save mode but no information about the problem. devices are OK, the disk is seen from the system with its correct letter but when I boot normally it still freezes the OS. As soon as I disconnect the SATA HD's cable, Windows 7 boot perfectly. On UEFI Bios all the 6 SATA channels are enabled, I also tried to change connectors but the problem is still there. If additional details are needed

I have spent all day failing to install Windows 7 on my system. The only thing I have done since the last successful install is to create a RAID 5 using 3 259GB HDDS. The system worked when the 3 HDDs were not RAIDed, but now installation hangs after the second restart. All I get is the black screen with the mouse arrow; nothing else. I tried the cmpmgmtloader solution and disabled the network adaptor and usb controller which were showing as having problems. I even tried un-RAIDing the HDDs and going back to the original state and still it hangs.

I've got problems with this system I'm building where it hangs (crashes?) on shutdown.
System:
Motherboard Commell (QM67) LV-67HTXD
CPU Intel Core i7-2620M
RAM 2x 4GB, DDR3, 1333MHz, Kingston
PSU MiniBox M2-ATX-HV
1. The problem only appears in Windows 7 64 bit
2. Clean start and shutdown in Win XP - implies software issue not hardware
3. I haven't tried Windows 7 32bit yet.
Here's some details of my investigation so far:- All of these tests failed to solve the problem.
Unplugged all devices. Fresh install Added manufacturer base drivers. Windows updates applied Safe mode Windows clean start only one memory slot filled (both slots)
In desperation I've created a trace file (using this article Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums)

i've recently done a fresh install inc SP1 of win 7Pro x64 and now the pc almost constantly hangs on shutdown.everythings up to date driver wise etc.I was aware of this problem on my older quadcore machine but had it very infrequently, this happens almost constantly on my new one.Found a hotfix which i tried to install but had a warning say that "not applicable to my computer", i then realised that the problem was addressed in SP1.

I'm having random Windows 7 complete system hangs. They produce no errors or warnings in the log other than a notice of an incomplete shutdown. I'm using the intel chipset driver for Vista with the system, and the Realtek HD audio driver for vista with it (this was happening before that driver being installed) and everything else is the default windows 7 driver, it's guaranteed to happen on Skype starting up with a lot of unread events, and copying a file to the desktop with Filezilla, but sometimes it's just random. Complete freeze, no mouse, no keyboard, no ctrl+alt+del Here's my computer specs:
Windows 7 RC (7100) x64
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 GHz (was overclocked to 3.51 during install, is now reduced to stock, problem remains)
ATI Radeon 4650 HD 1 GB version
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L motherboard (Intel ICH10 chipset)
6 GB of DDR2 800 PC6400 RAM
a 640 GB WD Caviar Green HDD (SATA slave, not boot drive)
a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda GT 7200.11 (SATA master boot drive)
Sony DVD-RAM drive
Linksys PCI 802.11G wireless adapter (using 64 bit ralink drivers since the chipset matches, no prior issues when used on Windows 7 7000) Being through, I ran stress testers on maximum load on each hardware component, no crash on full CPU load, no crash on HDD load test, both drives and no crash on high RAM usage.I also remember similair symptoms on Vista, but this also did not happen iirc on Windows 7 7000.The system was overclocked during install, I reset the BIOS to "optimised defaults" after a few crashes, no difference.

I am helping out a friend by re-installing Windows 7 on his laptop. Unfortunately the laptop had been infected beyond repair by a virus/malware and would not boot past bios. When installing Windows 7 x32, I make it to the "Setup is starting..." screen and it does not continue. It is not the disk as I have used the same one to install it on my laptop. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 4gb of ram and 500gb HDD space

I've had my new computer since February and haven't had any major problems with it whatsoever. However, theres one little annoying thing; randomly, the computer will hang/freeze.I first noticed this when iTunes stopped playing music - it had frozen and I noticed the LED light on the desktop was completely lit and wasn't flashing at all, as if it was doing something really big. When it happens, normally I try and open Task Manager to see which program is using up the most Memory but Task Manager only opens when the computer has unfrozen and music has started playing again.I can continue browsing on whatever Internet page I am on also, so the whole computer hasn't frozen but sometimes when I try and see if I can open other programs via the Taskbar, the timer appears next to the mouse. These hangs happen completely randomly; its only ever done it once during a day but sometimes it can go quite a few days before it does it again and the hangs only last for a few seconds, once or twice though it has lasted for a few minutes.
The common thing is normally it happens when i'm playing music via iTunes and I only notice its frozen because music has stopped playing and iTunes becomes unresponsive, so i'm thinking it could be iTunes causing the lag as it can freeze quite a bit normally anyway (I have made sure though i got the 64-bit version).I think once it happened when I wasn't playing any music, but iTunes was still open. Its not a virus/malware/etc... and I've checked the Event Viewer directly after a freeze to see if any error was reported
when the issue occured but nothing.

The only major change i have done but not recently was my video card from Nvidia to raddeon saphire.

I was handed a computer to try and clean up yesterday. It is an 2 GHZ AMD 64 bit CPU running windows 7 64-bit with a whole 1 GB of ram. Yes I said 1 GB of ram, I cringed too. I've got the owner convinced to upgrade that to 4GB and he's gonna go with a dual core processor while he's at it which should make a ton of difference. In any case, on to the problem. The windows install was pretty bogged down, somewhere around 80 running processes and no free physical memory. The machine actually booted to the desktop fairly quickly but wouldn't respond to anything due to all the running processes. I went through the task manager and killed enough tasks that I could navigate. I ran ccleaner on it to clear some junk. I went through the startup processes and cleared all the non-essentials. I went into the add-remove programs and removed the junk. I ran ccleaner again and cleared up the remnants and even ran the registry cleaner. I ran malwarebytes and an AVG virus scan and was actually surprised to find the system very clean. It's whole problem seemed to be an absurd amount of "legit" startup items. After I got it all cleaned up to around 40 running processes I defragmented the drive using defraggler and manually bumped the size of the swap file up to 1.5x ram.
The system is now running great, well as great as it can with only 1 GB of ram. All except for one problem.... when the machine boots up it comes to the screen where you can select a user, I select the user and then it hangs on the welcome screen for as much as 20 minutes before it goes on. It didn't take more than 20 minutes to boot before I started! How can it possibly be booting slower now with an optimized drive, larger swap file, and 0 extra components running at startup?

I recently have a problem with my system. when I try to write a dvd it randomly freezes. sometimes it writes completely without error, and then the next time at the start of the sequence it locks up. the hdd activity led lihgts up, and the mouse is still responsive, but nothing seems to react anything. after some minutes the BSOD appears stating that a system crucial process had been unexpectedly quit or has been closed, and so on.. the same happens now if I try to update the dvd's firmware. it's an LG GH22NS40 writer with a grren power 550w psu and windows 7. previously i have nero 10 installed, but it's been deleted for now.

yesterday I was using my computer and it was working fine. I turned it off (like I do every night before bed). And when I turned it on again today it got stuck at the Welcome screen. I thought that maybe it was just a one time problem (most of my computer problems are) so I shut if off manually using the power button and the booted it back up again but it got stuck at the welcome screen again. So it is off now. This computer is homebuilt and it is almost 1 year old.
Specs:
i5 2400
AMD Radeon HD 6850
8GB RAM
Asus P8Z68-V Motherboard
