I have a windows 7 laptop, its a dell inspiron 1545, every now and then on boot up it displays "preparing desktop" and windows loads into a different looking desktop with only a few files and folders showing, only able to rectify this by restarting the system, but I was wondering if there is something I can do to prevent this from happening?

My PC suddenly restart and some time it shows blue error message after black screen, after I restore my pc. Now another problem is that. After restore, now when I start my pc, in startup window it says "window is preparing your desktop".

I name my user account and computer name, pick passwords and choose how I want Windows to update. When it goes to prepare my desktop, it is about to load and is saying Welcome, then welcome changes from Welcome to shutting down, and the computer restarts. After the restart the Gateway recovery manager comes up and makes me restore my vista installation.I am not using Upgrade media, however because the installation is doing the exact same thing on only the Gateway machines, and the HP installation went fine, it leads me to believe it is a issue with the manufacturer?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIn the last few days my Toshiba Satellite L745-S43210 hasn't been working right. Recently it won't boot up properly. It started to boot up and then it would freeze up seconds after showing my desktop. I managed to go into safe mode and use msconfig to change start up programs and turn it to only the essential items. After that it worked and I tried turning everything back on and it worked fine last night. I assumed it was just overheating from being used so much in the last few days. Now today when I tried starting it up I was able to enter my password but the screen went black with my mouse pointer working. I turned it off and tried again a few times before going into safe mode.
I went back into msconfig again and turned it back to only essential programs and I performed a virus scan with Super Anti-Spyware and Malware Bytes and the only thing that they found were cookies. I cleared them out and booted up windows again and it worked fine. Now I am trying to select only certain programs and choose only the Microsoft, Intel and Toshiba programs/services and now when I boot it up I don't even get the the text box to enter my password, it just shows the blue windows start up screen. Right now I am using Safe Mode With Networking to type this and try messing with start up programs again.
The system started an update and in spite of the warning not to turn the computer off, the update got interrupted.The restart has been 'Preparing Your Desktop' for about 2 hours with no diagnostics or any indicators.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy brother was doing something on iTunes, think unlocking a iPhone or something but when i came home and turned it on, it came up with Windows logo but then saying Preparing PC for first use and then a error comes up saying Windows needs to restart to continue installation. It restarts and does it all over again. I tried going into safe mode to do a system restore but comes up with same msg of preparing pc for first use and needs to restart. All i can think is something has corrupted the boot up and need to repair it but not sure where to go for it. There is a recovery option on the laptop from sony but that says it restores your laptop to factory settings

The screen then showed "preparing to configure windows. Do not turn off your computer". After two hours I assumed there was something wrong so I tried to turn off but it wouldn't, even if I unplugged it,so I removed the battery. While I work on worksheets, I often save the files to the desktop for easy attachment to emails when I have completed my work. On two occasions now I have been saving the files to the desktop as I usually do but when I go to the desktop the files are not there.If I look in the desktop folder, they are there. Running 64 bt Windows 7 Professional and scan for Malware yielded no issues.
p.s. When I reboot the files do appear on the desktop ....
A strange problem with specific .wav files. Several audio files brought into Adobe Audition 1.0. Edited and saved in two different folders. Several but not all exhibit the problem but not all. Start WE; select folder with wav files in question. The directory list field on top immediately starts with a green bar slowly expanding towards right. Next to the cursor arrow there is the "busy" rotating circle. Cannot get any properties on the wav file; however, the two docx files in same folder can be copied, properties shown and basically seem ok for use.
Noticed that the data definitions above the listing for the two error folders are:
Name...#....artist.....albums
Whereas for all other folders it is:
name......date modified.....type....size.
All other wav files in other folders appear as they should and can be processed like any other file. So it is only several of the 10 Audition 1.0 edited audio files that have created the problem. I cannot delete these files. While the green bar is expanding to the right and when it completes its extension still have the "wave" running along the bar. When I try to delete an offending file I get another window "Preparing to recycle" window with "Discovering items". "More Details" show: Name: is blank; From: is blank; Time remaining: calculating; Items remaining: calculating; Speed: calculating. I let this run for 11 minutes and it just kept "calculating".
Another "interesting" thing is after the first time I encounter this problem, close WE and then bring up WE again the left panel shows only Favorites and Library (no computer list). When the cursor is in this panel I get the rotating circle. In any other panel, only the cursor. I can "place the Library in another window" and now with two windows I get the normal favorites, library and computer in one of them. If I restart the PC I can again start WE ok and run ok if I do not select a "bad" folder. Same problem exists if I start the PC in "safe mode". How to delete the wav files causing the problem?
I did a search on this and could not find anything. Once in awhile my desktop will have a bunch of random files I deleted a long time ago. I always empty it too. There won't be anything in the recycle bin or on the desktop and then I'll go to look at it after awhile and some other group of files will be there. I have tried the whole "rd /s /q C:$Recycle.bin" on every drive on my computer. Windows is installed on C:. It isn't even the same group of files each time, it is just random files I've deleted over the past 2 months. I noticed a folder for a demo install of InDesign comes up a lot and says it is in use when I try to re-delete it, could Adobe's crap software be breaking it?
Windows 7 64 Ultimate, 12 gigs of ram, I7 processor. Hard drives are at most half full.
I am running WIN7 64 Bit, BT wireless hub. Have added a laptop (also running WIN7 64 bit) to home network and set up HP Photosmart Premium 309g printer as 'wireless'. It works a treat with the laptop but my desktop computer tells me the printer is off line.

I then have two laptops that are generally connected to the router wirelessly but sometimes via cable, if I am transferring a large amount of data. The main laptop is running Win 7 Pro (64 bit) and the other one is running Vista Business. Until a couple of weeks ago the NAS would show up under computers in Windows Explorer on the Win 7 laptop, and the shared folders could be accessed. At that point I connected the other laptop via cable to the router.
Since then NAS has not been showing under computers in WE on the Win 7 laptop and I haven't been able to access the shared folders. The NAS is still showing as a media device and I can log in via IE - but I cannot get at the files directly or back up to a NAS folder. I have tried entering the device name and IP address in WE but I get the error message "Windows cannot access XYZ...". I ran the troubleshooter but it didn't work. The NAS came with a NAS detector utility and sure enough this detects the NAS but when I click "Open Network Folder" nothing happens. I have tried changing the IP of the NAS but this does not make any difference.

I tried the upgrade through Windows route and this is when the issue began. The install went normally, but when i got to the screen for preparing for first use, it hung.
I have tried everything I know of, including using Active@ KillDisk to wipe the hard drive entirely. Whether I try a 32 bit or 64 bit copy of 7 Ultimate, it hangs at the same spot. I striped this machine down and have only a single DDR3 2GB memory stick in the mobo slot...
I can install Vista Ultimate x64 without issue..
I just have a question regarding installation of Windows 7 to dual boot with XP.
Am planning on doing a clean install on two new SATA hard drives. Will first attach one drive and partition and format it when I install XP.
Should I then go ahead and attach the second drive and partition and format it using XP before I start my installation of Windows 7?
Or, would it be better to attach the second drive and then partition and format it when I install Windows 7? Am thinking that the second approach would be better. By the way, this forum is a great resource.

But instead of setup screen where i can create username, it shows login screen. where only "Other User" with a blank icon is. I cant login to it.
