Hardware Drivers :: Went Back To HDD - Optimize Drives Still Showing Solid State Drive
May 7, 2013My SSD (Intel 60GB) was becoming too small to hold my Windows 8 system partition so I found another use for that SSD and went back to HDD. I transferred whole SSD to HDD with Paragon Backup & Recovery 2013 free, and now the system gladly boots from HDD.
But Windows 8 is somehow still thinking that they are running on SSD. For example "Optimize Drives" (Ex Windows Defragmenter) shows "Solid State Drive" as media type and probably because it can't access TRIM functions, it is unable to defragment the drive, so it is yelling that "Optimization is not available":
How do I convince Windows 8 that they are running from HDD again?
I have tried to remove this disk from "Disk Drives" in Device Manager, also I removed/reinstalled everything under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and "Storage controllers" without any success.

May 27, 2014I was playing an online game when suddenly I've got a runtime error which froze the screen. I had to push the power button and my laptop restarted, slowly than usually but otherwise O.K. However, when I tried to do the maintenance using the Optimize tool this is what I see now:
The "volumes" (for the lack of a better word) Push Button Reset and ?Volume{9789f0... that have never been showing before are showing now and when I try to force a manual optimization the window just blinks but doesn't do anything. I've had the optimization set to "weekly" but after that I and it changed to "daily" for at least 3 days now but this didn't solve the problem. Highlighting and right-clicking doesn't work.

Now today i wanted to look to my 2 external spindle drives if defrag had run and it did run......BUT also on my Samsung SSD's which i never do myself.
Windows 8 erroneously defrags SSDs, indeed. Doesn't look like it's been fixed in Windows 8.1.
Why Windows 8 defragments your SSD and how you can avoid this.

Sep 10, 2013I Defraged my comp to Optimize. After defrag, my mouse and keyboard no longer worked. I tried restarting, unpluging and switching to a wired mouse and keyboard. I can't get the comp to recognize them. I also switched between back and front ports.

Maintenance :: Samsung Magician Has Stopped Defrag?
Mar 23, 2013I am running Win 8 Pro.
My set up has 2 x 650 GB WD Black hard drives and a Samsung 840 (non pro) for the boot drive.
I have run the latest Samsung Magician, however the BIG problem is that it has stopped the windows 8 Defrag program.
I reinstalled Win 8 and all was OK, (now for the bit about me being thick -- ) I thought I would try the old version of Samsung Magician, and Bu**er me if has not only done the same thing again, turned off defrag and optimize, I am just unable to open defrag in order to defrag my WD drives.
I do not really want to reinstall Windows 8 again unless I have to, so how to switch defrag bag on again.
Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Defrag Parameter Is Incorrect 0x80070057
Oct 28, 2013I tried to upgrade to windows 8 through the store and if failed horribly, the pc refused to boot a an error code I that don't remember so I decided to wipe everything and install Windows 8.1 from a usb drive. Everything was fine for the past week and a half until 2 days ago when the disk defragmentation tool decided to stop working, I ran the tool many times after installing 8.1 and it has always worked but now I get a 0x80070057 error which should mean that the size of my partition is wrong. I did a chkdsk /r /f that took 2 hours to complete and it didn't find any errors and I also ran a sfc /scannow with no luck.

After spending some time googling for the issue I found out that there are many Windows 8.1 users with the same issue and on the microsoft forums no one seems to be able to fix this. From what I understand this seems to be related to the size values of the partition which according to the defragger are wrong but the tool was working before and I didn't edit the partition in any way.

My Disk Defragmenter that came with the system will not open. When I try to open it, a CMD windows appears for 1 second and disappears. I have tried opening it in all ways.

Safe Mode
Sfc /Scannow
Chkdsk
Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.

Jun 4, 2014It seems that Windows 8.1 Pro's scheduled defrag is consolidating free space, which is taking forever on one of my 2 TB data drives, which has about 300 GB free space. I stopped it at about 9%, and dfrgui immediately showed it as "OK (0% fragmented)". Clicking its Optimize button resulted in the defrag phase completing almost immediately, but then it was back to consolidating free space, starting at 5% this time. According to Task Manager, it's read/writing about 40 MB/sec, and the Active Time is over 90%. I really don't want this to go on for hours and hours and potentially repeat itself during future scheduled scans. Is it possible to alter this behavior, or should I just disable the weekly defrag task?

Feb 1, 2013I just bought a Seagate ST750LX003 Momentus XT 750 GB as the new primary drive for my gaming laptop, and I'm wondering how to defrag them, and whether it is safe. I wanted the best of both worlds (space and speed) so I went for the middle ground. What is the difference between a regular HDD, SSHD, and a SSD? Do I just let Windows perform its' normal defrag routine as I normally would, or do I need to download some kind of proprietary software from Seagate that will do it? I like to use 3rd party software (UltimateDefrag) for my defrag operations, is all. And how much can I fill it up before it starts to slow down? I ask because I've heard that you cant fill an SSD up past around 50 to 60% or so before it slowly starts to degrade, since it needs room to perform its' TRIM (defrag) operations. Is this also true of SSHDs?

Aug 6, 2013My five year old HP Pavilion crashed with virtually no signs of life, although the 2 320GB drives are only 8 months old, and are spinning when startup is attempted. No messages of any kind on the display; I checked the display and it is good. Bought a new HP, but it has Windows 8.
All my backup data is via Norton Ghost 15/Windows 7 and is intact on a 1 TB external Passport drive. I need to figure out how to retrieve this data.
A suggestion was made to just install the old Win 7 hard drive in place of the Win 8 hard drive in the new computer. New computer can't accommodate both old Win 7 hard drives, so I stuck the C: in, it per normal containing the startup and OS files. The computer would not boot from this drive, and delivered an error message to the effect "No bootable disk or drive has failed."
So the question is would there be anything in the BIOS of the new PC which would make it expect to see Win 8?? why it wouldn't boot from this drive? I realize the drive could be bad, but given the age of the drive, it seems unlikely...

Aug 12, 2014I have a RAID 0 array consisting of 4x WD Black. Windows lists the array as an SSD in the optimize/defragmenter UI. Both 'Analyze' and 'Optimize' are greyed out and therefore I cannot defragment the array.
For the record I have the latest BIOS for my motherboard (which is an Asus Rampage IV Extreme), latest Intel RST and Windows 8.1 fully updated.

Oct 18, 2013I've reinstalled Win 8 and now even upgrading to 8.1 didn't change anything.
I have Windows 8 and am trying to see streams broadcast on Justin.tv using any browser besides Chrome. I can view streams on JTV using Chrome when I have it's built-in flash player going but if I try to use the one I downloaded it doesn't work and gives me the same issues as Firefox 25 and IE 10 which are a black screen for the stream and a constant loading circle for chat. After a good bit of googling I found out that to see streams on Justin.tv you have to have 3rd party cookies option enabled in flash. When I try to do this with the online settings manager it won't allow me to check to accept 3rd party cookies. Nothing else I've tried has worked such as downgrading browsers in FF's case and trying the current flash version and the beta one. Older versions of flash outside of IE just tell me I need to upgrade.
I've cleaned the cache so many times. The box is not clickable at all. It lights up when I put my arrow over it but it won't allow it to be checked. Also, when I try to change storage settings those settings don't take either.
I've used the uninstaller that's downloadable off of Adobe's site, restarted my computer and tried downloading the most recent Flash version again. I still can't click on these boxes and the changes for storage don't get saved when trying to do so when using Firefox or IE.
I don't know what to do with IE 10 since I have Win 8 and flash is integrated as it is with Chrome. Funny thing is as I mentioned before the only way I can watch Justin.tv feeds is with Chrome and using it's integrated Flash.

May 4, 2013I have had installer failure for Hp printer software and windows live mail even though signed in as administrator and running the programs as administrator; the failure is the same for both, that is " failure due to lack of privileges to write to C:program dataMicrosoft windowsstart menu".
I have gone to the files and changed permission from read only several times and had it change right back to read only as soon as I closed explorer.
I have gone into uac and disabled notification but it has no effects, and Windows 8 apps still seem to work anyway' so I reset uac to normal level again.
This all seemed to start after a win update, but doing a system restore has not worked either.

Jul 17, 2013I had a Seagate MyBackup 1TB external drive. When it was half full I decided to buy another one, the same Seagate, same model, same 1TB.
So I copied the files to the new one and I do backups every week or so for the changes.
Today I noticed that the old one uses 70GB more than the other.
I mean, 70GB is a lot. I checked the files carefully, it's all my movies. Both are the same capacity, 931 GB. Even same color. The only difference I found is that the newest has 16MB buffer and the old one only 8MB.
Just in case it is relevant, I first used a program called Cobian Backup to make incremental backups and so on, but it was a mess and I uninstalled, formatted the new one and copied the files directly.Maybe Cobian took 70GB of drive #1 and they are now lost in nowhere? I don't detect hidden files, hidden partitions, etc.

Win7 And Win 8 HDs - SWAP OS Across Drives
May 17, 2014I have Windows 7 on a 120 Gig SSD.
I have Windows 8 on a 150 Gig HDD.
I want to swap the OS's, putting 8 on the SSD, and 7 on the HDD.
So far, I've made Ghost images of both drives, and the system reserved partitions.
I have a boot-able thumbdrive, and multiple ways to make the ghost images available [External HD, Server, large Thumbdrives] so restoring them will not be an issue.
The largest OS uese 89 Gigs, so that is not an issue, and I will redo several installs of software, but that's not important right now.
Are there ANY concerns with doing such a swap?
I'd rather not, but I can change the connections of the SATA cables if I HAD to! The BIOS is pretty advanced, so I don't expect that to be an issue.

Two Windows 8 Hard Drives On Same PC
Sep 4, 2013I have a pc with 4 drives. And I got a new job, working from home and i wanted to make one of the drives just for work. It was one that i had windows 7 one and no longer used after i bought an ssd an put windows 8 on it. I am really liking 8 and so I put 8 on the second drive that had windows 7 on it.
It all worked fine, but when i tried to have two windows 8 drives on the same pc it made the drives unbootable. I had to re install windows on both drives again. I did some reading and i think its the fast boot feature of windows 8 that's causing the issue. I disabled fast boot on both hard drives. And before I plug them both in at the same time. I want to make sure that im not going to loos all my data again.
