I want to use third party DNS servers rather than those of my ISP. However, it takes less than a day for Windows 8 to lose the settings I painstakingly entered (awkward user interface, and long navigation to enter manually).
Can I set the DNS servers using a script, and if so how do I go about this?
Last night my wife's laptop couldn't connect to the internet. Error message was DNS servers not responding. I unplug power cables and Ethernet cables from cable modem and router (WRT54GL DD-WRT). That didn't seem to work. Today, she was able to get on certain text heavy websites. The WiFi icon said that she had internet access, but still very limited access and slow. I try DNS Release from router's setup page and DNS Renew. I also tried to release and renew through command prompt, but nothing has worked. I can get full access if I bypass the router and connect to my Desktop. Is my router dieing?

Recently my computer ran into a problem, couple of days ago, I could play or view websites just fine, just that day when I came back from outside I launched my game (The secret world) and the launcher got stuck at Downloading patch information.. (which was actually trying to connect to the server for patching) It was just stuck at there, so, I tried opening the game's website for support, but surprise, I can't either..
this is the error Google Chrome shows me ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT. So I can't play nor see the website BUT, when I use a proxy in chrome, I can see the website just fine, and no, im not banned from the game..
This is what I've tried so far..
Flushing DNS
Cleaning dns cache
Resetting router / modem settings to factory
Rebooting several times
And I even restored my whole PC to fabric state (Yup, I formatted and all)
Ive been having this problem for many months now. It started with a game called Arma3. At the time i thought it was the game that was the issue but i soon found out it was my PC.
for the rest of this thread when i say a program "freezes" what i mean is:
-The program first freezes then in the task manager the program slowly drops down to 0% CPU usage
-Sometimes the memory usage also goes down by a little bit.
-While in the frozen phase it either stays at 0% CPU usage or goes up and down between 0% and 1%.
-The length of this frozen phase varies a bit from program to program but its roughly between 5-10 minutes
The problem is games that have multiplayer crash as soon as i try to access the multiplayer. for example when i click multiplayer on the menu(in Arma3) it freezes for about 5 minutes. it then unfreezes and returns to normal loaded and the server list comes up and i can connect to a server, at which point the problem occurs again but for a shorter amount of time.
Some other Games/Programs that this happens to are:
-Battlefield 3
-Battlefield Hardline
-XPlane Flight Simulator
-War Thunder(Launcher, i cant even get into the game)
-Men Of War: Assault Squad
-Some Downloaders/Installers(when using ftp, i think)
-SkyDrive
Networking Games/Programs that it doesnt happen to are:
-Internet Browsers(Chrome,IE)
-Minecraft
-Teamspeak 3
-Visual Studio
-Most Downloaders/Installers
This problem only occurs on my PC and i have two other people in my house that have the same installation of windows 8 and are on the same network, who have never had this problem. I know the easy solution would be to reinstall windows but i dont want to have to do that and i have a problem with the windows key i bought and i wouldn't be able to activate it again(legally).
Do you use the built-in Windows Optimize Drivers (Disk Defrag) or do you use a third party product?
If third party product, which product and why?
Any method to remove the start button in Windows 8.1 without using a third party app? Are there some registry tweaks to do so?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've reinstalled Win 8 and now even upgrading to 8.1 didn't change anything.
I have Windows 8 and am trying to see streams broadcast on Justin.tv using any browser besides Chrome. I can view streams on JTV using Chrome when I have it's built-in flash player going but if I try to use the one I downloaded it doesn't work and gives me the same issues as Firefox 25 and IE 10 which are a black screen for the stream and a constant loading circle for chat. After a good bit of googling I found out that to see streams on Justin.tv you have to have 3rd party cookies option enabled in flash. When I try to do this with the online settings manager it won't allow me to check to accept 3rd party cookies. Nothing else I've tried has worked such as downgrading browsers in FF's case and trying the current flash version and the beta one. Older versions of flash outside of IE just tell me I need to upgrade.
I've cleaned the cache so many times. The box is not clickable at all. It lights up when I put my arrow over it but it won't allow it to be checked. Also, when I try to change storage settings those settings don't take either.
I've used the uninstaller that's downloadable off of Adobe's site, restarted my computer and tried downloading the most recent Flash version again. I still can't click on these boxes and the changes for storage don't get saved when trying to do so when using Firefox or IE.
I don't know what to do with IE 10 since I have Win 8 and flash is integrated as it is with Chrome. Funny thing is as I mentioned before the only way I can watch Justin.tv feeds is with Chrome and using it's integrated Flash.

I have had installer failure for Hp printer software and windows live mail even though signed in as administrator and running the programs as administrator; the failure is the same for both, that is " failure due to lack of privileges to write to C:program dataMicrosoft windowsstart menu".
I have gone to the files and changed permission from read only several times and had it change right back to read only as soon as I closed explorer.
I have gone into uac and disabled notification but it has no effects, and Windows 8 apps still seem to work anyway' so I reset uac to normal level again.
This all seemed to start after a win update, but doing a system restore has not worked either.
I am trying to share a specific folder on my Windows 8 computer with my Windows 7 computer. They are both on the same network connected to the same router. The Windows 8 computer is connected through ethernet, while the Windows 7 computer is connected wirelessly.

I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.

I've been trying to set up an old Savin 9033 printer through the company's router, but I couldn't find the network it's set up on from any other computer.
So I pull up Network & Sharing, see that Network Discovery is turned off.
I check it, go to click on "Save Changes" and nothing happens. I click it a few times and it kicks me back to the previous page, nothing saved. No password prompt or anything.
I double checked that all the appropriate services are running (DNS Client, SSDP Discovery, UPnP Device Host, Function Discoveryr Resource Publication, etc.) and made sure Network Discovery was allowed through Windows Firewall.
Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.

I am trying to get file sharing to work with my win 8 machine and my OS X Server. The computers are on the same network with the same workgroup but I can't seem to connect. I was able to connect with the wife's win 7 home machine until I upgraded it to win 7 Ultimate now it wont connect either.

I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.
If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.
On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".
The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.
Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.
I want to backup my photos from my computer's D: drive to OneDrive. But when I start to upload them, it says those photos are also available offline. That means, all photos uploaded from my D: drive are also copied to my C: drive. But it wastes my space on the C: drive. All my settings are set to upload photos with online access only. I tried to delete the copied photos from my C: drive but it also deleted them from OneDrive. Is it possible to upload only to OneDrive without copying the photos to C: drive?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOkay, so in Windows 7 I am able to connect my wireless to my phone, and run an ethernet cable over to my Xbox. If I use the ICS feature and configure it under services to allow ports 88 and 53 UDP, it works fine. This also allows my Xbox to seemingly add to this list of ports as it finds necessary.
The issue is however, with Windows 8, although I can connect to Xbox Live the same way, it does not seemingly allow the Xbox to add more ports that it deems necessary. This leads to that NAT error message that I am actually trying to do this as a way to bypass it.
In Windows 7 this only works if the connection is set to Home (not sure about Work), but not public. I'm curious if the reason this does not work in Windows 8 is that Windows 8 does not have a Home option, but rather only Private or Public settings. There is some small setting buried deep somewhere that I just need to change to treat it like Windows 7 allows Xbox to treat home networks and configure/add ports automatically.
I would like to make a folder share from a tablet with windows 8 with password protected to a laptop of windows 7 and another of vista. I have followed the tutorial of File Sharing - "Share with" & "Stop Sharing" in Windows 8. My PCs have been set in the same workgroup and same user account, network discovery and file and printer sharing turned on. At the first time, it is OK for windows 7. However after some changes of account (delete and create them on both windows 8 and windows 7), it doesn't work anymore with the error from windows 7 "Login failure: user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" whenever password protected turned on in windows 8 and only OK when password turned off.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy ISP provides service only via 802.11. I use laptop A most of the time. The captive portal for the service provider only allows one login per account at a time. The policy is intended to prevent multiple people sharing one account. It's just me, I'm the only user, but very occasionally I'd like to have a 2nd laptop access the internet simultaneously. No abuse, just the simple convenience of not having to logout from A if I need to use B for 30 seconds.
What I want to set up seems simple and it probably is:
WiFi Internet <---> Laptop A <---> ethernet cable <---> Laptop B
Such that Laptop B can share A's active WiFi connection without having to request its own unique address from the ISP.
At present, Laptop A has its network interfaces set up so:
- WiFi is connected, active, functional. Selected the "Yes turn on sharing and connect to devices" in sidebar.
- Under the wired network properties IP Version 4, I manually set addresses to be
IP 192.168.10.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0
Laptop B has only a wired network, set to
IP 192.168.10.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.10.1
A & B can connect directly to each other, share folders, etc.
What do I need to do in order to get laptop B to transparently use A's WiFi connection? My guess is that A needs to be set up to do some routing between the internet side and the 192.168.10 subnet, and B needs to be set up to look to A as its "ISP" ... but I don't know where to begin.
I've got a new Win 8.1 computer (Surface Pro 3), and on that computer, as an adiministrator, I turn off Password Protected Sharing for my network (Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Advanced sharing settings -> All networks). Once this is done, the other computers on the LAN have good access to the disks I have shared. However, when my new computer sleeps and wakes up, or even sometimes if I merely close the cover and open it, something has reset the password protected sharing option and turned it back on. The other computers no longer can access the shared data. I have to open up the control panel (as above) and turn password protected sharing off. Again. Many times a day.
How do I get this option to stick the way I set it?
I just bought a Lenovo Y500 a couple of days ago and it came with a pre-installed Windows 8 everything seems working fine but when it comes to Wifi it randomly disconnects a lot , sometimes shows limited access and most of the time the signal strength bars keep going up and down.

I was happily using file history, it was backing up to my G partition, which is located on my second hard drive (both drives are internal)but now I get error message:
I think the problem is that this partition got added to my user, that's what the network path shows:
How do I get it out of my user, and back on a normal path?
I have a 20mbps upload with my ISP and I'm getting around 18.5 consistently. I've started using Zoolz for backing up and I have been assured it does not throttle the bandwidth. It reports it is uploading at around 15-16mbps which would be absolutely fine but Task Manager and NetSpeedMonitor show the upload speed as considerably lower.
I've attached a screenshot showing the difference but I was wondering if Task manager and NetSpeedMonitor could be wrong at all? It seemed quite coincidental that the speed reported by Zoolz was roughly what I would expect. Is there any sort of traffic that wouldn't show with Task Manager?
I re-installed Windows 8 yesterday evening (thought it would be quicker than to cleanup and fix my old install) and then directly upgraded it to Windows 8.1. The problem I am experiencing is quite weird: The Operating System doesn't detect the network cable.
With that being said, do not jump straight to the "Did you turn it on and off again" questions. Here is what I have done so far:

I am wondering what is wrong with my installation. It was working A1 a few days ago, except for the issues I re-installed the operating system for.
In my network 4 Desktop running windows XP all are connected LAN cable and my modem is tplink and 1 laptop running windows 8.1 pro accessing network through wireless in my laptop network place all the pcs are visible but I am not able to ping them and when I click I am getting message that Network path not found Error code 0x80070035
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a lenovo G505 laptop - it will no longer connect to my BT home hub despite it showing as being available. I suspect it might be to do with the fact that it is has a passkey - I entered it yesterday when prompted and it connected fine, but now I'm not being given the option of entering the key.
I've also tried connected using the BT wifi (as opposed to homehub) but once again it will not connect me. I've been through all the troubleshooting options, and searched under every term I can think of, but nothing is working.
My 8.1 laptop shows multiple network connections to my Samsung Smart TV --- One as "media connections" and 3 as "other connections". Both devices are on a simple wireless network using Linksys WRT54GS.
Under the "Network" page, most of the "Properties" of the TV connections are the same except for "Serial Number" and "Unique Identifier". Did I do something wrong when setting things up? Are these extra connections harmful? Should I delete some? How?

I purchased a new Windows 8, Inspiron 15 7000 series - 7537 last December. I had been using a router at a hotel for the time, and it worked correctly. When I arrived home, I had a Belkin router, and i experienced network issues in that i could not connect to the wifi. I could connect with Ethernet cable. The problem was fixed through customer support eventually, but I now have a new Comcast router, and i'm experiencing what appears to be the same or a similar issue. I can access the internet fine by wire. With wifi, it says i have access to the internet over the internet icon in the bottom right, but i cannot access webpages. I can use skype, and communicate through it.
