Network / Sharing :: How To Disable Password Access To File And Printer Sharing

Feb 6, 2013

I am in the midst of the final steps in setting my my new Win 8 system.

I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.

If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.

On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".

The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.

Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.

Network / Sharing :: Disable (add Printer) SNMP Scan

Oct 14, 2013

On all of our Windows 8.1 clients, every time a user tries to add a printer using the 'add a printer' wizard, it triggers alerts from our secure network devices indicating that someone's trying to log in to them with SNMP.

We need the failed logon notifications but it's incredibly annoying to get these all the time.

Any way to disable the SNMP scan when adding printers? Windows 7 didn't do this. Nor did windows 8 base as I recall.

Network / Sharing :: File Sharing With Password Protection From Windows 8

Jun 8, 2013

I would like to make a folder share from a tablet with windows 8 with password protected to a laptop of windows 7 and another of vista. I have followed the tutorial of File Sharing - "Share with" & "Stop Sharing" in Windows 8. My PCs have been set in the same workgroup and same user account, network discovery and file and printer sharing turned on. At the first time, it is OK for windows 7. However after some changes of account (delete and create them on both windows 8 and windows 7), it doesn't work anymore with the error from windows 7 "Login failure: user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" whenever password protected turned on in windows 8 and only OK when password turned off.

Network / Sharing :: Unable To Print On 1018 Printer - Getting Access Denied Error?

May 17, 2014

In continuation to my previous thread on this subject, I now have another network printer problem in the same system. I chose to open it in a separate thread because the previous one became too long.I have 3 PCs on my home network

1. Windows XP (SP3) desktop with HP6500 E709a USB printer.

2. Windows 7 (Ultimate SP1 64 bit) desktop with HP 1018 USB printer.

3. Windows 8 (64 bit) laptop.

All computers can see each other and share folders on the home network.

Computers 1 & 2 can freely print on their own printers, as well as on each other's printer. Computer 3 (Windows 8) can print on the HP6500 (which is connected to the XP computer), but cannot print on the 1018 printer connected to the Win7 computer.

I know that on the Windows 8 laptop I have to define a local port for the network printer, but when I try to do it I get "Access denied" error message. Win7 denies access from Windows 8. This is strange, because Win7 does allow access to XP. On the WIN7 computer, under printer properties/security, print permission is granted to "Everyone".

So what could be the reason for the "Access denied" error? I guess it has to do with security / users / permissions, but I cannot find a solution.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Cannot Access Wireless Properties Or Save Password

Dec 28, 2012

Every time I sign into my windows 8 account at home it never automatically connects to it. I tried following the tutorial at [URL]......

However when I get up to the part where you are support to right click on the wifi connection to access view connection properties I am unable to. Right clicking on the wireless connection does absolutely nothing. I even tried clicking on it and holding and still nothing.

When I go to the network and sharing center and click on the wireless connection it pops up a dialogue called wi-fi status. However there is no button for wireless properties. I remember in windows 7 there use to be a tab where you change the key encryption type and there was a check box where you can save the password. Essentially I can't access the dialog box in page 10 of the above link.

Network / Sharing :: Restarted XP Computer Now Cannot Access File On Windows 8

Sep 15, 2014

I had to restart a computer on our office network which uses Windows XP on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Now I cannot access a file on a computer which uses Windows 8 unless I tell the Windows 8 computer to let EVERYONE access the file - which I don't want to do. A computer using Windows Vista on the same network has had no problems. I've created a new username on the Windows 8 computer and given the problem computer that name but still no access. I've enabled read/write file sharing and given the problem computer full access permissions but still can't get in. I removed all Microsoft updates that had been installed four days before the problem occurred on the Windows 8 computer and recovered the Windows XP system to the day before the problem occurred - still can't get in.

Network / Sharing :: Something Keeps Turning Password Protected Sharing Back On

Sep 15, 2014

I've got a new Win 8.1 computer (Surface Pro 3), and on that computer, as an adiministrator, I turn off Password Protected Sharing for my network (Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Advanced sharing settings -> All networks). Once this is done, the other computers on the LAN have good access to the disks I have shared. However, when my new computer sleeps and wakes up, or even sometimes if I merely close the cover and open it, something has reset the password protected sharing option and turned it back on. The other computers no longer can access the shared data. I have to open up the control panel (as above) and turn password protected sharing off. Again. Many times a day.

How do I get this option to stick the way I set it?

Network / Sharing :: No Password And Username Request When Sharing Between 2 PC

Feb 7, 2013

While trying to share folders and files not within a homegroup, but with workgroup, I create 2 same accounts on my desktop pc and my notebook that have windows 8 installed on them. Then I share folders and when accessing dtPC or notebook windows does not ask for a password, just opens the files under the network group. However when i start windows and try to access shared folders right away, it gives me the message that the path was not found. Only a while after that it gives me the access.

If I try to do the same thing but with the notebook what has windows 7 installed it asks me for a password and username as expected and everything goes well.

Why can't I make windows 8 ask for credentials while trying to reach another pc with windows 8.

Network / Sharing :: Random Network Disconnect To Wireless Network Printer?

Feb 27, 2013

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.

Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.

Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.

The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

Network / Sharing :: Advanced Printer Setup Freezing?

Aug 30, 2013

I'm trying to discover my Wi-Fi enabled printer (Brother MFC-J425W) by trying to plug in the ip address of the printer manually. I am currently using this online reference - How to install a Standard TCP/IP Printer on Windows 8? - Welcome to TP-LINK - to go through the particular process. When I open up the advanced printer setup window in the hardware & sound category of the control panel, it starts searching for printers and then freezes on that task. I cannot press the next, cancel, or quit ('x') button at the top right of the screen. This is a brand new laptop that I just got in today with some top of the line hardware for its class, and I am currently connected wirelessly to the same network that the printer is on, so there should be no issue as far as I'm aware of on the discovery of the printer.

Network / Sharing :: Unable To Connect With WiFi Printer?

Apr 11, 2013

I'm having trouble connecting my wifi printer (Canon pixma mg3100) and my Lacie Network Space on Windows 8, while I haven't experienced any problems connecting these same devices to my Win7 computers.

The driver for the printer is, according to Canon, compatible with windows 8.When I install the software on both my windows 7 laptops, it immediately recognize the network and after 5 minutes I can print wireless without any problems.

However when I try to install the same software on my Windows 8 computer it keeps asking to first plugin a usb cable and do a lot of manual steps, like pressing several buttons on the printer, it's ridiculous! After a while the software succeeds in finding my Wifi but it keeps on saying 'unable to connect'

My Windows 8 laptop is a brand new Dell Inspiron and I didn't change any network settings.

Network / Sharing :: Wireless Printer Can Scan But Not Print In Windows 8.1

Apr 25, 2014

I've once again encountered this problem with my Canon PIXMA MP620 printer/scanner: when using it wirelessly, it can't print. According to 'Devices And Printers', it's offline and therefore most programs I use in Windows 8.1 claim it can't print.

However, using Canon's program 'MP Navigator', it can scan from the printer without any problems. I can scan from the computer to the printer and the other way around. Therefore I'm suspecting that the problems lies with Windows 8.1 and not the printer. The connection is obviously there but Windows doesn't seem to think so.

I can't find a solution in the printer's manual, Windows doesn't give me anything when I try to troubleshoot the printer in question, and Canon's own 'Network IJ Tool' can find the printer but says it's doesn't work without clarifying why.

Network / Sharing :: Connecting To Network Printer?

Feb 4, 2014

My friend got a new computer and is trying, unsuccessfully, to connect to a network printer that he says he has used in the past, in his one man office. He gets his internet access through a wireless router. But the printer is connected via Ethernet cable to a second router that does not have internet access, but does have two printers connected to it.

So his new computer is connected to two different networks, the wireless network, and the wired network. I'm not familiar with having your computer connected to two networks simultaneously.

So my question is, is there any problem doing it like this, and should the network printers show up when the computer does a search in Add Printer? Because it does not find anything right now, not sure if we need to be looking at the printers, the router, or the computer.

He is not able to connect the printers to the wireless router, they are in different rooms. And there are no other computers connected to either network right now.

Network / Sharing :: File And Folder Sharing?

Mar 11, 2013

On my home network there are Windows 8-A, Windows 8-B and W7 machines. There is no problem networking among these machines except from Windows 8-A to W7. The shared folders on the W7 are displayed on Windows 8-A but if I attempt to click-open any one of them no ID/PW is asked for and the following message is displayed:

"You do not have permission to access . . . . . Contact your network administrator . . . "

Windows 8-A <--> Windows 8-B OK
Windows 8-B <--> W7 OK
Windows 8-A <-- W7 OK
Windows 8-A --> W7 NG

Windows 8-B and W7 are logged in by the same ID and password, but Windows 8-A is logged in by a different ID and PW. I can open any folder of the W7 from Windows 8-A *if* Windows 8-A is logged in by the same ID and PW as for W7/Windows 8-B.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Pro - Password For Shared Folders Over Network

May 18, 2014

Now I want the to connect to my shared folders through the app which works perfectly fine. But what my requirement is that if anybody else want to connect to those shared folders (with the same or another app), I have to give out my Microsoft Account password for that.

Is there a way that I can avoid this password giving? What I'm looking is for creating another set of credentials to access the shared folders without giving away my Microsoft account details. I assume I can create a local account and do the same. Is there any other way I can do this?

Network / Sharing :: Win 8.1 Pro - Share For Everyone Still Asks For Network Password?

Sep 15, 2014

I just bought a new Intel NUC which i installed a clean and fully updated Windows 8.1 Pro on. I want to create a networkshare on this machine, which everyone can just access (read permissions) to view the content of a folder or drive.

I am trying to access the drive on another (my own) installed Windows 8.1 Pro (also fully updated). Every time i try to access the machine through the Network explorer in Windows i will be prompted to enter credentials.

I have checked the network settings following this article (amongst others): Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8 on both machines.

I also checked all the sharing settings on both machines (private/home network, allow external connections, allow all types of connections, allow sharing without password etc. etc.).

I am a bit dazzled as to why the machine keeps asking me to enter credentials. This is standard protocol nowadays? (I wonder how that would work on a machine that has a local user without a password).

Network / Sharing :: How To Enable / Disable Eth0 Interface In 8.1

Apr 25, 2014

I think I'm fighting a network permissions problem, but I'm stuck.

I have reliable connections to my DSL modem and to the internet. I would like to enable/disable my network interface, in this case the ethernet connection to my DSL modem, (not the DSL modem connection to the phone line).

After cruising through the Control Panel/Network and Sharing/Change Adapter Settings/ menus, I made a desktop shortcut to my Ethernet device. Right clicking on the shortcut shows a context menu with "Disable". This option works fine and cancels the connection to the modem. After that, the shortcut context menu remains the same: no option for "Enable" is shown.

However, if I follow "Open file location" to the control panel's Network screen, the context menu for the target icon DOES contain "enable". More strange: after clicking on main Network context menu, now the desktop shortcut displays "Enable". Sometimes nothing "enables" until I run the "Diagnose" option several times with administrative priv. (I am the administrator).

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Breaks Network With Two WiFi Access Points

May 10, 2014

I have two wifi APs in the home and only one has an Internet connection. the other is to access the wired LAN.

Last week I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and thought everything was going well until I started getting wired LAN dropouts.

I have traced it back to 8.1 handling connection to wifi APs. In Windows 8, I was able to have "Connect automatically" for BOTH wifi adapters on this laptop. Now when I try to connect to the non-Internet AP, Windows 8.1 announces (correctly) "Limited access" and that's what Windows 8 did too. BUT, Windows 8.1 waits a few seconds then drops the connection with a useless message, "how me solve connection problems," where there is NO problem. A limited connection for the AP to the wired LAN is OK as it was in 8.

So now I am stuck with no home LAN access unless I drop the Internet AP and connect to the LAN AP.

Also, in the great wisdom of 8.1, because it is only a "limited" connection, it does not remember the Passphrase so I have to type it in every time. So much for progress.

What to do to get past this behavior and have a "limited" connection as OK as it is with Windows 8?
